[KERNEL][RAY - 4.0.2.A.0-Overclock] [Rel: v0.1][Dt: 26/Oct/2011] - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

Been playing around with Kernel development and created an overclocked kernel for the 4.0.2.A.0 stock Rom.
There's nothing too speciall in it at the moment, but lets you overclock the Ray to 1.9Ghz using the source released by SE and the modified CPU steps that IF2 posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1165355
There's no custom bootloader/Clockwork mod and no additional governers (at the moment) although I may add these in future as I learn more.
It seems to work well enough, and everything seems to be working as standard. I experience random lock-ups at 1.9 and occasionally 1.8Ghz, especially when it goes into/out of sleep when the screen turns off. Lower frequencies seem stable though.
This is released as-is, I'm using it myself but I can't be held responsible for any instabilities or failures you might experience. Just thought it might be of use to some people.
The new .img file can be downloaded from here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17615284/4.0.2.A.0-Overclock.img
To install just use fastboot in the usual way. To return to stock, extract kernel.sin from the official update image using WinZip/WinRar etc and flash using fastboot again.

Thanks a lot hartej !
Just flashed it, seems to work as described. I OC to 1.4 Ghz
Will report back if there is any issue.
Looking forward for additional CPU governors, insecure kernel, autoroot and clockwork recovery
Thanks again for your hard work

That's the plan eventually, but still just learing the ropes so don't expect all that by tomorrow Glad I could help.

Thanks for the efforts. I set up to 1.3 Ghz and so far so good.

Finally? Cheeky buggar!
Not really had any time unfortunately due to work, but if you've updated the defconfig for the Ray I might have a bash at your sources in the morning (still don't understand them!)
Thanks again though - if it wasn't for your help and the fact you stopped developing for the Ray I'd never had started playing about with kernels myself!

It could be a good idea to move this thread in the newly created subforum dedicated to the Ray: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1351

Can you also make a kernel for cm7 with some other governors like Doomkernel's one but for fxp043. Thanks in advance

I've created a new thread in the Ray forum as I don't think I can move this one without being a mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18829345

This is all pretty new to me, so don't expect too much too fast!
In future I may look at CM7 images but currently I'm on the stock firmware (at least until the flash in CM7 is fixed) and as I have to use the phone daily I'm not prepared to switch between firmwares to be developing for different sources at this time.
I've been using CM7 on my other devices (HTC Desire and ZTE Blade) so will most likely switch to it when some of the bugs have been worked out. When this happens I'll look at the CM7 Kernel.

[KERNEL] LinuxDX | v004 | 04-10-2011

Intro
Ok, this will be another fun.
Again, my first attempt (like FroyoBread and GingerDX!) to build a custom Linux kernel for a phone. I've just found some free time this weekend This time, this is a kernel. Again, you can guess it's a Linux kernel having my customized features. We will gradually see what can be done
The main goal is to have a fast, smooth, lightweight kernel with special features.
This Linux kernel is based on our great FreeXperia Project (Jerpelea) kernel. Thank you for your unbelievable contribution for our Xperias. I still use racht's great compiling machine for this project. Thank you racht.
Features
Linux 2.6.29
Default GingerDX logo
X8Gesture / AX8MT for (fake) dual touch
ext 2/3/4 support
FXP's merged minmax / smartass / smartass V2 governor
netfilter / iptables
swap. NOT recommended.
MDDI fix
Brain **** Scheduler
Known bugs
None (?)
Requirements
Unlocked bootloader
Flashtool 2.9.1
Desire to void your warranty!
Downloads
v004
v003
v002
v001
Install instruction
1. Download
2. Turn off the phone
3. Run flashtool
4. Press Flash, choose downloaded file
5. Turn on phone while pressing back button
6. Wait till progress finishes
7. Unplug the phone, turn it on back
8. Enjoy.
Notice
1. This kernel is tested by me only on GingerDX. I don't test with other ROMs, so it is only supported if you are using GingerDX. (Perhaps this will change in future, but not now)
2. This kernel is written for E15i. I don't have E15a, so if you have problems with E15a, I cannot help.
3. This kernel is in development. It may contain bugs. If you have bugs (reboot, something not working, etc...), post it here. Don't send me PM for technical problems. I will not answer most of technical PMs
4. Incompatible with FXP ROM. Wifi will not work on his ROM.
5. Source: it has been on github for a long time but how come I forgot to put the link here @[email protected]
Thanks
Thanks go to the_laser, jerpelea, racht, nobodyAtall, zdzihu, Bin4ry and lots of other contributors...
Release history
October 04 v004.
SD Card compatibility fix.
Notice: after this release I'll be very busy. I will not work on both GDX and LDX for some time.
September 27 v003. Fully working.
Wifi fix! Thanks to FXP.
Remove chargemon compatibility to solve 100% load of init process.
September 24 v002. Improvements.
Integrated ClockworkMod 4.0.1.5. Use touchscreen to activate it during boot.

wow.. thanks and keep it up bro..
ps. noob here about this kernel thing, do I need to unlock first the bootloader or just flash it? Sorry co'z i don't see it in the installation procedure..thanks
Thanks, doixanh, you're the man! Although i'll keep my paws away from my bootloader for a little longer until all this custom kernel thing settles down
Keep up the awesome work!

Yes I remember Angga has the same question regarding wifi, it will be fix soon
GJ, DX
anyways... shouldn't u have a warning of some sort to remove the modules already included in your kernel? it will mess up the memory addressing and cause bootloops, no?
also, requirements should have "Unlocked bootloader" too for those ignorant twits
Wow, nice worck!!!

Cool, but please sort out the front page articles, grammar is quite bad
E.g on the article HTC: ICS Update Announced
Every Android user bothered about his version of android should know what ICS is, if not, it is Google’s newest version of the Android OS (4.0) and has many improvements over Gingerbread, not mentioning a total UI redesign!
That should be "Not to mention"

It should still boot (I have the default CPU speed set at 1024MHz (1GHz) on the kernel) just don't overclock further than 1.6GHz.
I don't know how DooMLord made his 1.6GHz one because he has no source code for it.

Still, try it just to see if it boots
Hi Keiran,
I did some searching on the forum and i think its because my Play cant handle 2ghz so it just hangs on boot screen. I tried your kernel and it did the same as the other 2ghz kernels. It must do some checks on the boot to see if the device can support it the different clocks.
Any chance you could make a kernel which can only clock up to 1.6ghz please.
Thanks
Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I was on DoomKernel. I flashed your Dark Forest Kernel to give it a whirl and everything works fine however now m Wifi does not work. It just says "error" next to it under settings. I flashed the stock kernel, then rebooted, then went back and reflashed the DarkForest Kernel and same thing. I do have a flashable zip for wifi modules I tried that and still the same, no wifi. Any ideas?

[KERNEL] muppet kernel for CM7.2 (Xperia Ray)

v2 Released. Scroll down for info!
Hello,
After lots of help from sirkay and FXP, I've built my own kernel that I thought I'd share with you.
This kernel wouldn't exist without the hard work of FXP. This is built from his source code. All real credit for this belongs with him (and DoomLord too, also an FXP Team member)
That said, this is my take and keeps the rather awesome release that is CM7.2 alive!
To be clear: This is a kernel for Cyanogen Mod 7.2 - Gingerbread! If you want a good ICS Kernel look at Sirkay's Thread.
So, what's different?
Uses a very recent GCC to compile, GCC version 4.6.3 which I optimised the build for Cortex-a8 and NEON.
Is compiled for performance not size (Optimize for size unticked)
Heap Randomisation is disabled.
Enabled SWAP - So you can use swap if you want to...
Default Scheduler changed to deadline, same as the Sony official kernel (still has bfq if you want to use it)
Default governor changed to ondemand.
CONFIG_OABI_COMPAT turned off. (This might break apps, haven't found any yet though)
Disabled CPUFreq Debugging.
Disabled FRAME_POINTERS, enabled STACK_UNWIND. Reason here: http://lists.openmoko.org/nabble.html#nabble-td6126708
There is no boot logo when this kernel boots. Each time I added one, the kernel refused to boot. I'll look at that. Just have patience, your phone is booting still...
(Here's where I make lots of stupid claims about how smooth, how buttery, how much battery life this kernel saves. Except I'm not a screaming idiot, so I'm not going to do that!)
I'm interested in any feedback you have, but I did this mostly for me.
And please remember the real person to thank, FXP. It's his source code I've used to build this. Also again thanks to Sirkay for his help and pointers.
Download it from here.

@muppetmania attach here you png file. i can try to convert it to .rle for you
Could GB MIUI have the privilege?
Could we have a CM7 based MIUI 2.3.7 kernel?
I think GB MIUI works just fine and don't want to upgrade to ICS or JB.
But a better kernel for GB MIUI is always appreciated.
Thanks in advance, pls let us know if you'd be willing to.

Thanks sirkay, but the problem isn't that I can't make a rle file, it's that the rle file when added to the ramdisk stops the kernel booting. It seems to a bug in the SEMC loader, I found a post about it somewhere. Does the boot.img need to be padded out to a certain size to work?
Sometimes my logo.rle would work, but then I'd make changes, recompile, and the kernel would hang on boot. Annoying, so I've removed it for the moment.

Hi rivtre,
I'd love to help, but my Ray is the only phone I have and is running CM7.2. While I could make a kernel for MIUI I'd have no (easy) way to test it. It wouldn't be fair to anyone if I started releasing untested things. So I'm sorry, it's not that I don't want to help, but no. Anyway, read the next bit to see why that's probably not a bad thing!
To All:
My kernel seems to be terrible when it comes to HD video recording. Can anyone else test this? I get heaps of dropped frames using my kernel when recording HD video vs a FXP Stock kernel. I need to look more at this, but for the moment I'd recommend not using this kernel!
v2 Released!
Version 2 of muppet kernel released.
What's new?
Compiled with GCC 4.7.1
Reverted to BFQ Scheduler by default
Reverted to Interactive CPU Scaling by default
Added logo.rle so you know it's booting!
Removed Debugging Symbols (CONFIG_KALLSYMS)
Reverted the scheduler and CPU scaling as they seemed to be the cause of the video recording lag.
Enjoy!

Just flashed your kernel, going to give a test run! thanks!!
Edit:
Well it doesn't seem to me that the camera recording works at all ... pictures = fine - but when trying to record video - the image freezes - and the camera app crashes.
I have to reboot to get back into the camera app...
Also, can't play any video I previously recorded...
Anything I'm missing?
I've flashed your kernel and did a cache + dalvik wipe...
Cheers!

Not yet. But i can make overclocked kernel later. But i think 1ghz dual-core is enough for ics.
I think that greater number governors and schedulers are more important than overclocking, you're 100% right with speed for ICS and even JB.

my work on cm10 boot was stuck on ramdisk issue. i posted a last_kmsg which showed that kernel booted but ramdisk had issues.
i dont understand kernel issues very well, but hope to get it working now that you are here. i'll ask for ur help from time to time.
plus, i want to take permission to use ur kernel tree for building cm9/10 from source. dont wanna use prebuilt now.
last thing, what is the difference between an ics n jb kernel, exactly what needs to be modified to make it work?....
thanks

Ramdisk(sorry couldnt resist) among other things but for initial booting ramdisk.
PS might not be the best person to answer though...

not a kernel feature requires correct media codecs.

Thank you.

Qualcomm S4 Play is made for speed 1-1.2GHz, and that's the safe range of frequencies. Remember that this is ARM-cortex A5 not Krait, and more than 1.2 can really harm it.

I know ramdisk, but let me rephrase my question, what exactly (in ramdisk) needs to be modified and how, to make it work on jb. Anyways, i'm still figuring things out by trial n error so progress is very very slow. The logcat was the only thing i ever got to which showed the cm10 logo as well but then, everything MESSED up. Havent been able to replicate that result since.

The difference isn't just in ics and jb. the difference is in cm and sense ramdisk too. I don't know what need modify yet, but i will start the work with cm later when i have enough free time.
Feel free to use my sources.

my bad edited.seems mixed it up.
So happy to hear such good news for the DesireX! Finally the developing for this device is becoming richer first of all, thank you for this custom kernel and thanks nexus prime for his effort to port the CM series I'm not an expert but yeah, sense and AOSP/AOKP Roms need different kernels. To learn more I think that Dennis Rassmann (the creator of the famous Bricked kernel series) or faux can answer your question about ramdisk, if you contact them (they are really kind and gentle). After that I would like to ask if it's possible to add the useful sweep2wake function to this kernel, in future. For now, good work guys, never give up!!!

[Kernel][Overclock][V2] Overclock kernel with boot menu for 4.4 Kitkat [Fandroid]

Thanks to XperiaSTE team for the overclock kernel source first. I just did the config and compile but nothing else.
This kernel will overclock your device to 1.15GHz. The overclocking will provide a better performance and a smoother user experience.
I'm using a kexec multiboot kernel on my device, so I didn't test the kernel packed as elf format. It should be good because I have done flashing the self-built kernels several times.
The overclock source doesn't seems to be the latest but everything works~ Maybe that's because the modules in initramfs? (I did nothing to initramfs)
It's nearly impossible for me to upload the kernel on something like devhost/mediafire, so sorry for that. Could someone upload it on these sites please?
V2 Changelog:
1) Use GCC 4.9 Linaro to compile.
2) Change the SLQB allocator to SLUB. I don't really think SLQB is stable.
3) use 2G/2G user/kernel split. It seems to have a better performance.
4) PID namespace
5) NOTE:NO recovery in V2! Instead of recovery, the kexec multiboot menu by @percy_g2 is added. Big thanks to percy_g2. For how to use it, see Link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-u/p-development/kexec-multi-boot-menu-t2647623
* To enter boot menu you should press the power key when vibrate

V1(Stable) Link: http://pan.baidu.com/s/1kTyul07
Finally, sorry for my poor English
Hope you like the kernel~

Thanks for your support!
by doing diff -u to the two xperiap_defconfig, the configs seem to be same.
So XperiaSTE did nothing more to the overclocked kernel.
therefore the config isn't changed and the only change is in the code.
Doing diff to the whole source tree will take much time so i didn't do it
By the github commit the changes seem to be all related to overclocking.

you can read cm-11.0 and overclock branches's commits

CM11Overclock_Fandroid-MIUI https://yadi.sk/d/kn4Gv5wXaP7Qj
Is this kernel stable? And can I use this in Europe?
Thanks for the kernel!
Just a suggestion for anyone thinking about flashing it right away:
Wait a couple of days/weeks for someone to do some testing, you could fry your motherboard (happened to me on my previous 2 phones).
I'm not saying this kernel will do that, but it's just a precaution.

It's a small time period, understand me please
I was running OC kernels on my previous phones and the motherboard frying happend months after use,
I'm not saying that this is the situation with this specific kernel, these are just my previous experiences,
and it was just to warn people
I had ever used panthom kernel on stock jb, it used 1.15ghz too but still safe used for a long time..
thanks for the great work.but how to install multi rom on our phones?
If anyone has a problem downloading the kernel from baidu, I have made a mirror on dropbox:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gxuw8o8jtllzmfi/CM11Overclock_Fandroid.elf?dl=0
Ofcourse with the permission from the developer
Can someone please explain steps for installing multiroms? Can I use cm11 along with cm10?
Would the existing cm10 need to be reinstalled?
I've given link in the thread
No reinstalling is needed
