The other day I accidently used my Touchpad charger to recharge my Nexus S. Afterward, everything seemed fine until I attempted to connect it to my laptop to offload some files. While it worked the day before, my laptop (Windows 7 64-bit) no longer discovers the device. Suspecting a problem, I connected to another PC running Win7 32-bit and a Mac running Snow Leopard. All with Android SDK and drivers properly installed with the same result. The same goes if I first put the Nexus in bootloader mode.
What makes me think there may be hardware damage is this. If I power off the Nexus S, then plug in a charger or USB cable, the phone boots. I do not believe it did so before. In addition, in the past if I plugged a charger or USB cable the LCD would briefly light up. After the incident, it doesn't. It still charges though.
Not necessarily looking for answer here, just thought this might be a word of caution for those like me who own both devices.
It should'nt have
5.3 V instead of 5V = not a big enough difference to cause a problem
2A instead of 1A means nothing regarding your current (no pun intended) problem
Plus your nexus S has charge protection to protect it from incompatible chargers
I use my TP charger to fast charge (because of the 2A thing) my GS II and my wifes HTC desire
However Fast charging is not good for the long term life span of the battery

I've been charging my Nexus S 4G as well as a couple of other android phones (Samsung Vibrant and Samsung Epic) regularly without issue for a month or so. I doubt the Touchpad charger was the issue.
I've been using the touchpad wire to charge my evo 4g for over amonth and it's still fine.
Thanks for the feedback guys. Now I'm stumped as to why it happened. It is definitely something lower-level than OS, given the boots-when-plugged-in behavior.
End result is I can only transfer files wirelessly, and since I recently reverted to stock, I can't root it again. Hopefully, the official ICS update is an OTA, and not via USB (like froyo on Samsung Vibrant). If not, I'll seek warranty replacement.

even though the charger is higher rated im pretty sure the phone only draws the maximum that is safe.
Just a thought: have you been using the same data cable to test this the entire time? It is possible for a cable to charge but not be able to transfer data. You may want to try a different cable just in case... just an idea.

Voltage is "given" by the charger and current is "drawn by the device.
High overvoltage would be dangerous but not 0.3v!
The charger could be faulty and have affected the TP while still being usable for other devices.
And the TPs dont like under current charging either.

Forgot to mention I tried different cables as well. The same cables transfer data to/from other devices like my Touchpad, but not the Nexus S. Good idea though.

I've been charging my htc windows phone with the touchpad charger. It's almost twice as fast and i haven't had any problems.
I have been temped to use it but. the NS charger gives 700ma while the TP gives 2000ma, If you want your battery to live more years use the stock.
I even use the NS charger to charge the touchpad... it will charge to 100% during the night.
I use my 2A Galaxy Tab charger to charge everything, never had a problem. If my SGS2 is happy with it, the Nexus S shouldn't have a problem either.
Amperage is how much current the charger is capable of supplying, the device plugged into it won't necessarily draw anywhere near that much, I'd be surprised if any regular phone would draw as much as 1A while charging.
Put a multimeter across any 5V charger and you'll probably find it's putting out anywhere from 4.5V to 5.5V unless it's a particularly good quality one. If it's high current charger then it's more likely it'll have a more stable voltage under load (i.e. - while charging).
A +/- ~10% difference in charging voltage should be within tolerance for pretty much any electronic device.
I also use the TP charger for my Sensation, no problems.

Sorry to correct you, but, current is drawn by the device and it will only draw what it needs so there should be no problem
Have you tried blowing out the usb port on your phone or cleaning the connection?

It's not the extra voltage. Either user error, reread guides... or hardware, cant't help you.

I am having the exact same problem. My phone does not boot on its own when I connect the USB cable, which is a slight difference from what you described, but everything else is identical.
I hadn't previously thought of the Touchpad charger being the root of the problem, but after Googling "Nexus S charging but not USB connection," I came across this thread...and wouldn't you know, I've been using my Touchpad charger for the past two nights.
I haven't made any changes to my phone in the last two days. The only thing different from my normal routine was Touchpad charger.
May I ask, why touchpad can not charge with USB port on computer, only charge with hp touchpad charger ?

Hey guys.
Any time I connect the phone to my computer via USB, the phone's touchscreen goes bonkers. It wont register my touch in the correct location, it jumps around and registers button-presses that I never pressed, or won't register a firm screen-press at all!
If the USB is unplugged, everything zips along accurately.
Any idea what might be causing this, and how I might fix it?
Just a quick background:
I rooted and installed the lag-fix. I encountered a problem with the lag-fix, restored factory settings, and root/lag-fixed again. The problem cropped up after the factory restore.

That's wacky. Since you've already done it once, I'd just restore again and see if that fixes it.
Also... not sure if this is a side-effect of the factory restore, but guess what suddenly appeared in my Widgets list??

I've since reset the factory settings again; no luck. Still all wonky when USB is plugged in.
I'm considering taking it back to best buy and simply exchanging it for a different one, since I've only had it for a day. I would think that resetting everything to factory defaults would have fixed any software problem. Maybe this is a hardware problem that I just now noticed.
I have heard roomer, that if your usb is to low or to high of a voltage it will bork up the touch screen while plugged in.
it seems a common occurrence on many Android phones that use our style of USB port that if you use a 3rd party usb cable (i.e. one other than what shipped with the phone) as well as many 3rd party usb wall chargers that the touchscreen will either go bonkers or freeze up alltogether.
I've seen the exact same thing happen with my friends HTC MT3G and Motorola CliqXT using certain cables and chargers. Any cables/chargers that do this to my Vibrant do it to their phones too.

the laptop I had it plugged into is so fubar'd, that it would not surprise me to find that it has incorrect voltage...
This happens all the time on my Droid 2, Nexus and Fascinate. I just swipe very quickly and press lightly. However, no matter how many "tricks" I try it's still hard to flip through screens or open the correct app. Hardest task would be to navigate a website. Considering it happens on multiple Android devices and computers I never really put too much thought into it. Just figured it to be a Android bug.
Wow, never seen this. Now I do use the cable that came with my fascinate to plug into my computer, however car charger, wall chargers, and a USB charger (in my truck), I just use the cables from my Droid1. All my chargers are generics... Hmmm..

Ok. So for anyone wanting to know what's going on in the background to cause problems with your phone with crappy chargers....
I first discovered this with another touch screen player *cough*ipodTouch*cough*cough when I was trying to make a universal 4-port USB charging bay that would work with my sansa and my ...other player.
The specification that most device-manufacturing companies use nowadays for charging states that for a device to recognize a charger (and to start accepting a charge from the charger), the data pins must be shorted (connected together). This is what Sandisk, Apple, and several others are using. That is how I built my 4 port USB charger and it works flawlessly (with my sansa, ipod, galaxy, and Cowon S9).
NOW, somewhere floating around on the net are specs that state that some data must be sent/received through the USB's data cable (i believe it claims to need any 2.5V) which basically puts some resistors in to make a voltage divider.with the power and ground and data pins. THESE ARE BAD SPECS. They might have been legit in the past for some other device, but they are NOT what our phones need.
So some of the cheap, off-brand chargers are actually sending random messages to our Phones through the data pins (non-sense 2.5 volts). I haven't heard any reports of this damaging the phone or mp3 players yet, but whenever I plug mine into a charger and I lose the ability to control the screen, I get nervous b/c I know there is voltage on the data pins, and I don't know if it's the correct amount. So I get nervous

I had the Droid and the first time I saw that, it freaked me out. It seems to be an issue with touch screen android phones when they don't receive the correct voltage, whether because of a 3rd party cable, or a different computer voltage or something. I was using my blackberry mini usb charger and it would act like it had rabies. Nothing is wrong with your phone.
The charger included is plugged in next to my bed, and I'm using my Droid's USB cable in the computer without issues. That's very strange. I've never heard of this problem.

Sorry dude. It's not just android handsets, and it doesn't (seem) to have anything to do with the proper voltage. I've taken multimeters to the chargers. They are providing the proper ~4.5-5V range. It has to be the data pins.
Although, that's just the chargers I've had. Take a voltmeter to your usb chargers (don't touch the casing at the same time!) and see what their voltage is. But a low voltage just wouldn't charge your phone, and a high voltage would damage it.
For some reason my touchpad no longer will go into USB Mode when I plug in the cable so I can not put the new alpha version onto my TP. Strange thing is the cable (which I just bought) charges it via USB, so I know it's not a connection problem. This symptom is the same for CM and WebOS, except in WeOS it gives the "may not charge" message.
Any way to manual mount the touchpad to transfer files onto it?
On a side note I did a little research and read on WebOS Nation Forums of a few people having this problem in landscape mode, but worked find in portrait mode, but mine sees no difference.
Like many people, you are having a USB power issue. Some cables just will NOT work for your Touchpad. I have only found one cable, other than the original that came with it, that has worked.
Also, if your USB port isn't putting out enough juice, or you have it plugged into a hub instead of an actual singular port, you'll run into problems.
PLus, sometimes a reboot of the computer can clear some of that up.

Thanks for the quick response. Appreciate the tutorials as well. I've heard of the power issues you've talked of but in the brief reading I did all those issues would not charge, or at least not show on the touchpad that it was charging. My Touchpad shows that it is charging, at least in CM it does....

I have one cable that will charge the Touchpad, but will not allow it to connect. It really sucks how much juice these things pull when they are talking to your computer via USB. Hell, I have to unplug my webcam before connecting my Touchpad to my laptop. Do you know how frustrating it is to be making a video, and then realizing that you have to stop recording to plug in your device? I scream about it every time. I also had to eliminate my USB hub. I always use the provided USB cable for anything Touchpad related. I have a car charger that barely trickles 2% over a period of an hour. I did notice that different computers give different results as well. My work computer (which is waaaayyyy better than my home one) handles the Touchpad like a champ. My Home Theater PC does pretty good with it after a reboot, but my laptop struggles EVERY time.

very strange. go figure...my original cable from the get go never made a solid connection i'd have to place the cable in a certain way to get it to stick, now that cable doesn't work at all. I found one around the house, worked totally fine on all aspects, lost it, bout a new one and it only charges. ugh...

The Tablet uses a microUSB 2.0 connection, all the specifications are listed here:

It can easily be tested with any cable from an Android device that has a microUSB 2.0 connection.
Hy all
I received my asus transformer prime some hours ago. I have the problem that my device does not charge when I put in the cable into my computer. But the device connets to the computer and is known as Transformer prime.
The only way to charge it in a slow mode is to turn off the screen, plug in into the computer and wait. Then it charges about 5 percent in an hour. I guess this way it charges only with 5V instead of 15V. I don't use any extension cables.
Where to you think is the problem and how can I solve it? There are other posts in other forum with the same problem.
Did anyone else had this problem? Thank you in advance. (sorry for my english)

I can't use the US charger because I live in Europe. But I ordered now the charger from Transformer Prime - seams to be the same - for Europe. Maybe this helps.

The instructions in the online PDF for the TF101 state that you can ONLY charge on straight USB with the unit OFF. I doubt that would change for the TF102

My wife has the original transformer and it will charge from my computer ONLY when the screen is off (weird right?) and even so, it charges sooo slow that way. She left it over night and it went from 18% up to 47%!
I'm still waiting for my Prime. Can someone confirm or deny this same tactic will work with it? You're better off getting the wall charger, but it might do in a pinch.
The problem is that the device goes ON if I plug it into the computer . Okay, I have to shut down the device after I plugged in.
There s thread in the original transformer forum that dig into the charging needs of the transformer.
The short version is, you need a 12v output, most standard USB AC only output 5v.
And you need to use the Asus USB wire, standard USB wire doesn't support 12volt current.
I did find a generic 12v AC with a USB port, priced around 10 euros in EU, it's not uber commun but I found it in a general store, so you shouldn't have to much problem getting one somewhere.

This does still work - I can confirm. But don't have so much time all the time
you guys should not be surprised at the charging speed on USB2.0. Most USB ports (unless you're using a newer motherboard) max out at 500ma. You can do the math.
Most tablets don't charge at all via USB to PC. This is because they have bigger batteries and the PC USB standard power output is 5v. Having it charge at all via USB is a blessing, but will not be practical in most situations. However, I am glad to have the option.
It would be nice to have the USB standard on PC increased to handle this, but maybe USB 4.0.
There is an extension to USB 3.0 that is being proposed that will allow up to 100 watts of charging. Should be seeing it in 2012.

Solution to Transformer Prime not charging problem
I'm not an apologist for ASUS, their UK tech support was useless and offered the only solution as a return for repair.
So you can be sure you have the same problem. My Prime worked perfectly (brilliant piece of kit!) but two days again stopped taking charge. Keypad drained completely, tab was down to 25% before I realised I had to do something. ICS has been downloaded.
ASUS told me it was the transformer plug not working - wrong I tested the output. Charge was not beinbg taken when cable was plugged into a PC or a an alternative USB transformer either.
ASUS told me it was the cable not working - Wrong - it woke the device up when plugged in.
ASUS told me it was because the new firmware was the problem and it shoudl go back to them for resetting to Android 3. Wrong.
ANSWER - Simples, reset with a paper clip using the small hole by the SD card in the Tab. Ten seconds. Restart.
Tablet and Dock start to recharge instantly. No problems since. No setting seem to be lost, all Skype contacts, Wireless passwords intact.
Don't panic and don't send it back. Hope this helps.

you made my day,it was not charging at all..the asus prime came from singapore and im currently in india it wasnt charging at all now it works perfectly.all i had to do was reset the pad .then it started charging ..
Just to double check, what effect does this reset have on the software. Any apps/data/settings lost? Does it revert the software to an older version?

I was wondering if anyone had any insights in to this problem I have been having.
Briefly, I have the 4g lte verion on EE's new network. I purchased the official MHL/HDMI adapter which works fine and the video is outputed to my sammy 50inch tv fine. The issue I have is the battery drains while doing so. I belive this may to due to the phone outputting more than it is drawing from the power source. Any thoughts ?
I spoke with Samsung tech and they said a number of people have started to report this issue and they are currently testing/investigating. If this is indeed the case seems a pointless acessory as a long video would possibly drain the whole battery, Im yet to test the full drain time.
Secondly, with a 3rd party docking cradle with spare battery slot which purchased from amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/eLifeStore®-Samsung-Desktop-Charger-Docking/dp/B008PPRGFY) also does not charge phone properly. Even with the orignial charger in the ac port (or usb port) . The phone reports as charging but stays the same or decreases. Charged directly from the socket it is fine. Strange!
Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

No idea man? A design fault maybe? All I know is that my phone took for f#*%ing ever to charge with the USB type wall charger. I pulled it out of the socket and plugged my other other one in that was sitting right next to it and it started charging? Checked a few minutes later and it had climbed considerably so I pulled the USB cable out of the new plug and kicked it under the bed where it now lays resting not to be used again LOL.
USB plug/cord works perfectly fine? So I use it on the computer. My laptop even charges the phone via the USB cable faster than the socket plug (which is usually the opposite - as I am sure we are all aware). So yeah I would say poor design or defective wall plug or both or something? Wasn't going to send my phone back because of it. 2second decision problem solved Samsung phone is great!
Im having exactly the same problem.
I have an s3 on orange and have the same mhl adapter conected to my tv.
I have tried the charger from my s3 which does says its charging when I connect my phone but only for about a minute so I also tried using the charger from my s2 and that just does exactly the same.
An easier way is to buy the official allshare dongle for your hdtv then you can stream anything from your phones screen direct to your tv and can have the phone on charge via pc or wall socket at the same time,

i suggest you throw away your original charger (slow charge) and its usb cable (loose - actually caused the extsd to become damaged to the point i had to repartition) and buy yourself a cheap usb cable for data (£2) and a 3rd party charger (pref not a usb adapter one - £5) and all should be fine!
I still experienced a small battery drain while using the mhl adapter, however, i froze a few apps with titianuim (ones i know run all the time like utter and tasker, paragon ntfs, easy ums, directory bind etc), and put it on min brightness - works like a charm. I know its a effort freezing apps but does the trick with my phone... Since finding that out i actually keep paragon & easy ums frozen till i need them...

There, now I have your attention - brace yourself, this one’s a tough one.
About 2 months ago, I flashed DeltaROM 4.2.2 V2.2. I’m a serial flasher so I’m quite aware of what I’m doing. I had some issues with it that I tried to get support from them but they unfortunately didn't get back to/couldn't help me.
The original post is here in case you’re interested, the biggest issue being my S3 no longer charges correctly. If I plug a charger in from the mains, it will not register as charging. Once every 10 seconds or so, it will actually register the charger, but only for about half a second before it drops. It DOES however charge if I connect it to PC, Xbox or car (only wrks in the car if charging from a USB socket, using the in-car charger straight from the cigarette lighter doesn’t work). Basically, I can charge my phone off anything that isn’t directly the Mains electricity.
I’ve googled the hell out of this problem, only to find that posters will quickly dismiss it as faulty hardware; bad USB cable, broken USB port, bad charger, low voltage from mains – anything at all. But the bottom line is I do not have faulty hardware. Everything was absolutely fine until the very instant I finished flashing DeltaROM – I’m convinced something didn’t go right during my first installation since it was a bit rocky (read the original post for details).
After getting no answer from the Delta lot I jumped ship to LiquidSmooth (which is very nice by the way) but the problem remained. In one last attempt I started again from scratch. I used TriangleAway, formatted EVERYTHING (the kind that also deletes all your media) and flashed back to stock. Using Samsung Kies I 'upgraded' the firmware and I'm now on the latest official 4.1.2 release – and it makes me a little sad!
Just to back up the fact it’s not hardware related, I deliberately persevered with it to gather up as much information as I could, and here’s what I learned:
Why I'm sure it’s not the battery.
• I've tried two other batteries (3 total) and the problem exists with all 3
• The health of my battery is excellent
• My battery charges fine in other phones
Why I’m certain it’s not the Charger
• One of my chargers is only a couple of months old
• The charger I have been using is the official Samsung one that came with the phone, though I have 3 more – one BlackBerry one, a charger that came with my s1 (many moons ago) and two the same that came with mine and my gf’s phone. These are the plugs with a USB input on them,
• I have 5 chargers in all – BlackBerry, Nokia, Samsung (x3) ALL of which don’t work with my phone but ALL of which work with EVERY other phone in the house.
Why I’m sure it’s not the wall Socket.
• I’ve tried every plug socket in the house and even taken it to my parents and to work – same story.
• Everything else I plug into the sockets work just fine
Why it’s not a bad USB cable.
• I have 3 that I use. All of them will charge off of the computer, the car or the Xbox – they cease to work when I use them in the mains USB plug.
• They all work fine on every other phone in the house, regardless of if it’s in a mains adapter or a computer
• I am able to connect with all 3 cables to my laptop to view files.
Why I don’t think it’s a damaged USB port on the phone.
• It ‘does’ actually do everything it needs to do when plugged into my pc, Xbox or car. If it’s communicating well with other devices and harbours electricity correctly when doings so, then it can’t be the USB port since the way it gathers energy is the same.
So what gives? How can it be bat hardware if it works from the PC? How can it be bad firmware when I am back to Stock?

* Telling me to send it off for repair doesn't count. If it's something that I can do at home and it fixes my issue, the first person who gave that advice will be the winner. This does of course mean that if my phone is just downright screwed, there's a chance no-onw will win.
Have you tried to use a kernal like siyah kernal and change the chrging parameters for ac charging? (the Mah value for charging off wall socket...

Sorry probably should have mentioned this. I tried siyah and set everything to charge as much as it could - AC and USB. I also tried a lot of other 'fast charge' apps to no avail.
While the USB does charge, it's still quite slow at 460mA. Once in a while, the mains charge stays connected, and you can watch the mA level drop. It will start at around 999, but within 10 seconcd it will decrease down to 100mA, which is slower than the phone actually uses up energy.
