[Q] Vibrant locking up and shutting down - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, my wife and I both have Vibrants and she has been having battery draining issues for the past week or so. She obviously says she didn't do anything or put anything new on the device. I have installed the same ROM on both phones and other than apps/games, they are the same. We have Axura 2.3.1.2 and a battery meter mod installed.
I have tried swapping batteries between our phones, didn't fix the issue. Swapped back to original batteries.
Ran through the wipe battery stats, fully charge, wipe stats in recovery, fully drain till shuts down, charge completely without interruption. Still has the draining/shutting down issue
She mentioned having issue with updating her Facebook app, so I uninstalled that this morning and she continues to have her device drain very fast, shut down periodically, unable to restart without a battery pull.
Would reinstalling the rom help? what are some other options I can do before wiping clean and starting over in hopes that solves the problem?
If you need any other info, I will be glad to get it for you.
Thanks.

What kind of battery life are you getting? For instance, what's your idea of poor battery life? Also, what does your wife use the phone for?
You may want to simply try a different ROM. Axura hasn't been updated since March. The most recent Froyo ROMs are Toxic8 and Zendroid.

I am using Toxic8 with the Bali 1.2 kernel and Juice Defender Plus, ... and getting 30+hrs with music (mp3 and streaming) all day long, some surfing, a lot of XDA. Sleeps over night and JD+ kills radios from 12-6am so nothing is sending data btwn those times eating up battery.
I just rebooted today to make a back up JIC but my uptime was approaching 300hrs. Heard good things about Zendroid too but I'm on Toxic8 and like it quite a bit.
Is she watching vids (video player or Tubes) or listening to online music/shows all day? Is her Facebook/ G+/ Gmail set to auto-sync? She must be running something that you are not to get the off balanced battery power like you say.

had a similar problem on project v, turns out that sync was getting stuck on my picasa and wouldn't go any further, unchecked for it to sync and problem solved...

Battery Life? Nothing running, no calls, or messages. 10% down in an hour?

Is this what everyone else is getting? I am running DCD's latest Rom and Radio.
I used to get two days, now i may get one. This is with no GPS running or any programs. Or making any calls.
Any advice?
Rephrase then.
How much battery life is everyone getting on the new Rom?
Are you sure your wi-fi switch is OFF?

"These are some factors that could cause your battery to drain fast"
The brightness of the screen is a factor. Try lowering it if possible.
Disable active sync, bluetooth, wifi, and beam when not needed.
Using the GPS drains the battery quick. ( results vary )
Push email also assists with battery drain.
Put your phone on standby when not in use.
Also the extensive use of PIE and Windows Media Player also assists with the drain of battery.
Last if you have poor signal strength this can also be a factor for battery drainage.
There are others out there but these are some that I encountered and learned live with.
There is a battery hack out there that can help you with your battery life. I don't know from the top of my head but search for a registry battery hack.

all those are try but when you first got your phone did you charge it all the way before using it cuz messes up the battery i know it did for me
Follow up.
On my original Rom I could get 48 hours on a charge.
Today I got 8 hours. I did not use GPS, I am not using vibrate for calls. I only got two calls. And two emails.
Basically I am using the same settings as I had on the original Rom and getting about 24 hours less battery life.
I guess I'll switch back and report then.
Perhaps this might be it?

DAMN.. that would explain alot.. I have a feeling its the same bug with the titans..
I dunno... I've been through the progression from 2.0.0 to 2.1.0 to 2.2.0 to 2.3.2 and I haven't seen anything like this.
I use the phone for about 10 minutes a day, so not much call time, but I have it checking 4 IMAP accounts every 15 minutes, do about an hour of web browsing, and use the GPS two to three times a day (basically any time I drive anywhere cuz it's fun!) and the most my battery has drained is down to 70% after about 16 hours.
Just to give an alternate view... battery life has been very good for me.

No. When I first got my phone I installed on the apps I researched before buying the phone, configured my WiFi, and imported my playlists from Windows Media and then I charged my phone with the AC adapter.
I use alot of WiFi through out the day along with Stereo Bluetooth Headphones to listen to music one Windows Media Player and I have a very good battery life.
Follow up.
My email server locked up this morning and my activesync wouldn't sync.
BUT my battery life was back to it's old self, used 6% in 4 hours. Very Happy!
Email server is now working and Active synce is syncing.
When I check the activesync program it always says connected now. Is that normal? It doesn't seem like it used to say connected all of the time.
It does look like activesynce may be the problem. The setting are the same as they were before the flash.
Any info would be appreciated.
Update: In case anybody is following this.
I went back to stock ROM and Radio.
Battery behavior is back to Normal. I am going to reflash to GPS Rom and see if that was the problem.

I an confirm this too. A few days ago I noticed excessive battery drain and reset my phone, and put it out of my mind. The only later ROM that I'd retained for days at a time has been 2.3.1 and today my battery level feel down by 50% in ~6 hours of standby. With the power on, with 46% remaining, the OS estimation for usage was 26 minutes. In 1% increments I could see it counting down....
I checked all running processes and nothing was out of the ordinary and nothing except that running task manager was bothering the CPU.
On a reset it appears fine.. Disconcerting. My phone didn't demonstrate this behaviour with the DCD 2.1 and previous ROMs. I don't know if to go back to 2.1 or 1.6.10. I'll see if this issue shows up again over the next few days.
That was the same problem I had.
Hopefully I'll dp some more testing this weekend.
After a reset the draining was repeating for me.. I decided to revert back to a working DCD 2.1 set-up and all appears fine again.
2.3.1 ROM was a kitchen build including the transcriber and no2chem's nueLED v1.5. That's all that I can think of being out of the ordinary.
I thought I am the only way with this problem. I thought it just a bad battery. Using DCD 2.31. Before 2.31, battery is about 90% on casual used when I left work. With 2.31, it becomes 95% after it pull from the power plug. Browser the web for like 10 minutes, it goes down to like 92%. By the time I finished work, and get back home around 7, it left with like 30%. That's on casual use.
Anyone tried reflashing to see if that helps the battery consumption?
It seems like this is not common, but effects a few of us.

I am also noticing the same effects, i was thinking bout reflashing my rom, i am currently running dcd's 2.3.2
Flashed back to stock and then back to 2.3.2
It looks like I am seeing the same battery drain again!! ARGH!!!
My battery is dropping like crazy too since the latest kitchen. When I first went to DCD's first WM 6.1 ROM I was blown away by the battery life. Same settings , same apps, different ROM and the battery life blows.
I decided to wait it out for a week and see if the new ROM comes out, if not I'm going back to the WM6.1 ROM that I first tried.

Need Help With GSB v2.4

Hello everyone! I would have posted this in the actual GSB thread but I don't seem to have the correct privileges yet so I am posting here instead.
First off, I just want to thank workshed for his awesome work. I really do love the ROM and everything about it. However, I have a few small issues with it that I can't seem to figure out.
First off, my battery life is terrible. Take yesterday for example. I used my phone probably twice to send some texts in the morning and to check the time. Charged it throughout the night and pulled it off the charger when I woke up and began my day. Within two hours, my phones battery was down to 75%. Five hours later, it was completely dead and I hadn't even used it.
My second issue is with settings. For some reason, when I reboot, some of my setting don't get saved. The one thing that really bothers me is the keyboard. I have Swype installed and every time the phone shuts off, I have to go into settings and re-enable Swype as my keyboard. It is just a hassle and is kind of frustrating, especially when I forget to do and then go to send a message.
Other than those two issues, I absolutely love the ROM and wouldn't change it for anything else. Anyone have any suggestions for what I can do about my few issues?

Recharge it until you get a green light. Restart the phone in Recovery, go to the Wipe menu, and wipe the battery stats (I'd keep the phone on power for this.) Restart the phone, pull the power and use as you normally would. Ignore anybody who tells you that you must run the battery down until the phone shuts itself off - this is really not great for the battery (though once a month or so isn't bad), and really isn't necessary for the battery calculations to reset themselves with new usage stats. The longer you can go the better, but it's not necessary to change your phone usage habits so that you have a completely discharged phone.

Thank you for that information, I shall try it out and see if it helps!
I also forget to mention one more error. Whenever I boot up the phone, my Facebook account sets itself to not sync and I lose all my contact pictures. I then have to open the Facebook application and set it to sync again.
EDIT:
Sorry, didn't realize it was a double post!
My battery life is similar to the OP's. I can make it through the day, but since I am ususally down to about 60% by one or two pm (from 6 or 7 am) I prefer a mid-day charge just to make sure I can last through the evening.
I just flashed [ROM][3/22/2011] GSB v2.2 | GingerBread 2.3.3 [CM7.0.0 RC2 NIGHTLY] a few days ago and it has been running great, but I noticed that my green light (battery fully charged) now comes on @ 90%.
Before it would not turn from amber to green till 100%. Should I wipe battery stats?
Under battery use (sry no screenies) there is nothing unusual:
Display @57%, everything else under 10%.
But when I checked Spare Parts I noticed that my little Eris won't sleep!
It looks like Android system is the culprit, keeping a partial wake lock.
Battery History in Spare Parts:
Other Usage - Since last unplugged
Running 100%
Screen on 13.2%
Wifi on 100%
Wifi running 91.6%
Partial wake usage - Since last unplugged
Android System almost a full blue bar, all other apps minimal bars
The phone has more or less been sitting at my desk at work in wifi with light usage.
Anyone have any idea why Android System is trying to eat my battery?
i had battery problems on gsb its a great rom. i switch to ginger tazz. with tazz's rom i get more then 20hrs b4 it says to connect charger thats with the display on about 4 hours and wifi on and running facebook tapatalk calls texts and whatever i think of doing.
I'm running GSB 2.5 CM RC 4 and I now have been able to get 25 hours with 70% of battery left. I used to be able to get maybe 24 hours before it died. Now your mileage may vary but this is what I do. I removed Task Killer which was eating a bunch or the battery and after a visit to Amazon's app market their little app was running all the time along with Weather Bug so both of them are now gone. and finally I turned off auto sync ( I can check my email when ever I want and it takes a lot less battery). By turning off auto sync that was what really made the difference for me. Of course there are many things you can do but running WiFi will kill your battery faster than 3g (or at least it does on mine) and I have the screen brightness set at 18. Just a note I leave BT and GPS on all the time when they are not being used an are in standby their usage is quit small.
What works for you would depend on if you want your email pushed to you all the time and if you have to have your WiFi on instead of 3g.
Again it's just my observations for my phone.
Really you should just do the first suggestion and recalibrate your battery.
Also if you read closely in workshed's log, he specifically said to a full wipe not only formatting external memory but also doing a dalvik/cache wipe. You may as well also wipe the battery stats while you're at it.
Personally I'm running GSB 2.5 and it's simply amazing. 60% of the battery gets me from wake-up alarm to nighttime charge.
Hope you figure it out!
After I installed GSB 2.5, my battery also seems to be rapidly discharging. Takes less than an hour of no use, wifi-on to drop from 100% to ~80%. I did a full discharge calibration on my battery as soon as I flashed to this GSB 2.5
I will attempt the simple batt stat wipe at 100% and see if that helps at all. I'll let you guys know.

[Q] Battery reset in CWM destroying apps?

I got my Gtab last week and installed Vegan 5.1.1 with Pershoot's latest Kernel. Everything was running fine and I customized my apps and home screen etc. One thing was weird though... I read about the great battery life, but I could only get a couple of hours of use with one full charge. But then I noticed that the battery icon only showed 96% after a full charge. I searched here and tried the reset battery stats option in CWM once the battery was completely empty. I had to turn on the Gtab a couple of times until it was completely dead.
Now I recharged the battery overnight and when I turned it on this morning I got quite a few error messages and force close messages. Launcher Pro doesn't work anymore and I can only get to the home screen with the regular launcher app. Other apps act as if I had never used them before, e.g. the market asked me to accept terms and conditions again, Dolphin browser too.
Anyone have any idea what happened and how I can fix this without reinstalling the ROM?
There is a stickied post in General entitled "Why are so many applications force closing?"
That might have some suggestions.
I did the re-partitioning and as I wrote everything was working just great before I did the battery stats reset.
Just wondering which of the two things might have caused the issues: a) not having anymore juice while the tablet was booting and then shutdown or b) clicking the reset battery stats in CWM?
Thanks guys!!
I doubt resetting battery stats had anything to do with it but having it die from a low battery while booting most certainly did. These tabs don't seem to like dieing do to low battery

[Q] Battery Drain Problem

Hello all,
I purchased a Galaxy S2 at the end of July, I live in the US, so it was from Amazon. The phone has been phenomenal, an amazing piece of technology.
I rooted the phone and flashed Lite'ning Rom 6.1 XXKH3. Still worked great, with no problems at all.
However, starting about a week ago, I am getting an extremely fast battery drain. Since then, I have spent hours looking at threads trying to figure out what was going on. I updated the rom to UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5, still no change.
I used Titanium Backup to freeze many widgets and app processes, still no change. I am currently using better battery stats to monitor wake locks, however after managing the wake locks, still no change.
I then bought a replacement battery thinking that the battery may have been bad, sadly, there was no change.
I have been trying to find a solution to this and had tried many other suggestions in other threads to no avail. As of now I have come to the conclusion that the device might have some type of malfunction that is causing this.
Am I going crazy or am I missing something obvious? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I have also re-calibrated the battery, still no positive changes.
Seeing the battery graph, you have your screen on a lot of time. Screen sucks battery a lot, so there might be one of the causes of battery draing.
Also you seem to have all day enabled 3G/WiFi, that also sucks some battery with it.
You can try JuiceDefender and see if it can help you extend a little your battery.
change kernel
Try flashing hardcore's "SpeedMod Kernel" and you will never complain about your battery life.....
After flashing this kernel my worse battery life was 1day and 12h with 3.5h screen on and wifi 85% ON.

Lol.... It's obvious he has some kind of battery problem, he is not using the phone much, and galaxy S 2 should have at least 5-6 hours screen on time and the phone lasted 3 hours.

Since I had all data on the phone backed up, I did a factory reset. I also flashed the UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5 as well as the suggested SpeedMod Kernel. When the battery was at 100%, I calibrated the battery. I tried to leave the phone idle as much as possible, I did use the internet for about 10 minutes to check e-mail, news, etc. So now the phone is essentially "empty" in terms of apps downloaded, I got rid of all widgets on all home screens.
There was still no positive change, I do really like the SpeedMod Kernel though, I do notice faster responsiveness from the phone.
I am beginning to think that the problem may be the hardware and not the software or battery.
I've got similar problems here. I am suspecting a hardware problem (I damn well hope it isn't coz i got mine from hong kong) because my phone never goes into deep sleep mode for more than 50% while the screen is off. I've tried at least half a dozen different kernels and roms and nothing helps, this is even in airplane mode i.e. with pretty much everything turned off. I've tested wakelocks and dont get anything more than a couple of seconds. I had my battery charged to full at 6:30am this morning, went to work and got home and it was dead after just under 12 hours with being idle 75% of the time. This is worrying as most people's battery lasts at least a whole day.
So I know it can't be the kernel, I know it cant be wakelocks, I know it cant be wifi or 3g data or anything of that nature so the only thing it comes down to now is hardware...
Funnily enough I've had exactly the same issue since about a week ago. Even when I take it off charge it's almost immediately down to around 80%. It's lasting around 4-5 hours, even when I'm not using the phone much, plus it gets really hot.
A couple of times Social Hub has appeared high up on the list of battery draining apps, although I don't use it. It doesn't always show up though. I switched to the CF-Root kernel and started using GO Launcher EX recently and wondered if that (or one of it's addon widgets) could be the cause.
It's really bugging me now!
SOLVED!
After days and days of trying to fix the issue of the phone not sleeping (and therefore draining excess battery whilst idling) I have finally fixed it!!!!!
First i noticed that along with the sleep problems, I was getting the problems with car mode popping up randomly, the phone going into mtp connection mode, and thinking its charging when it was unplugged. After looking into these issues (and i thought it was a longshot) I decided to do what people were saying and CLEAN THE MICRO USB PORT.
Now you're probably thinking I am a crazy man, but now im just crazy happy that I don't have to send my phone back to Hong Kong!
Instructions:
1. Get a clean, dry, soft-bristled toothbrush.
2. Take any case you have off the phone.
3. Gently insert the bristles into the port and "flick" it out softly.
4. Repeat this about 10-15 times
No matter what ROM, what kernel, what modem i tried flashing, my phone was always sitting on no more than 50% deep sleep mode when idle and had no wakelocks or "rogue apps".
I am now getting 90% - 98% DEEP SLEEP MODE!
I obviously can't guarantee that it will work for everyone, heck how it solved the issue is a mystery to me, one which probably an electronically-minded/computer systems person could answer. What I can say though is I searched high and low online for about a week. I tried different kernels, I tried different ROMs, I tried "re-calibrating" the battery, I used BBS to check for partial wakelocks. If you too have tried all this and have had no success please PLEASE try this and see if you have success!!
Thanks for reading!
....
Or if you didnt...
TL;DR: If you're having battery drain problems clean the micro USB port with a soft toothbrush.
The phone never sleeps when charging, the CPU idles at 200 MHz, whatever was in your USB port was probably making contact with the pins that tells the phone it is connected to a charger when it actually is not, so it was idling at 200 MHz and was not receiving power, that's the only explanation I could fathom
Do two things:
Install CPU spy and show us what the deep sleep percentages are,
and try disabling wifi. Also, what is the router?
I have a battery drain issue; but its kind of screwey as i will reboot my phone and lose about 20% of the phones charge. If i turn it off and leave it off for an hour the charge comes back. Its random as well; only happens once a week. I have had this problem on different roms. You might have a similar problem to me. Possible the hardware that detects battery state is knackered.

[Q] Huge battery drain on use has started last week. [Kinda Solved]

Hello everyone, I'm using Motorola Atrix with Epinter CM10 4.1 ROM for last 2 months, I was very happy with battery life. Phone wasn't getting hot and with normal usage, even with 3G on (in my country only options are 2G and 3G), I could get %40 of battery end of the day. But for no reason, phone has started to get hot (only 2G on) and drains battery really quickly for last 1 week. I can't even get %5 battery left from morning to evening now. I didn't change anything, only installed Adobe Flash 11.1, then I deleted it but nothing has changed. Phone gets into deep sleep no problem with that, no background apps. I did a virus scan both on phone and from computer, both came out clean. I reinstalled rom. Nothing. I'm gonna crash my phone against wall it's really annoying. I think I'm gonna do factory wipe and reinstall rom again.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Do you leave wifi switched on at all times?
I use MIUI on my Atrix (partially based on epinter's work, I believe? Correct me if I'm wrong), but I have found that the phone suddenly starts staying awake for no apparent reason a while (often a couple of days) after I've left wifi switched on. This obviously causes bad battery drain. I can usually get the phone to sleep again by rebooting with wifi switched off (I think) and a battery pull is invariably required.
I now just switch on wifi when I have large files to download then turn it off straight afterwards.
Not sure if it is the same issue or not, but Better Battery Stats (which can be downloaded on xda) indicated the Rilj process was stopping the phone from sleeping when this problem occurred. It is worth trying this app to see if it gives any indication what is causing your battery drain.

No I switch between mobile data and wifi. Thank you for your suggestions and opinions but I really don't think my problem is about sleep. It started to get hot and drain when I actually use the phone. For example, I was checking Twitter for 10 min. with 3G and battery was dropping %1. Now it drops %5 with 2G on and gets really hot like 35-37 Celsius degree. I'm using Watchdog to oversee processes and nothing is working without my knowledge on background.
Hi,
I have the same problem on the nottachtrix roms since the last 2 weeks, I tried switching to epinter cm10 with no luck. Ordered a new battery to check if the battery is dead or if the atrix is faulty
if you find a fix, please post it here

install gsam battery monitor to see your phone's awake time. this drain happens to me also when i listen to music or take a photo. something with mediaserver keeps the phone awake and then only thing to do is kill mediaserver or a reboot.
Regardless of which other apps you are using to monitor app and process usage, I'd recommend trying Better Battery Stats as this is much more detailed and low-level than other apps I've encountered.
It's a free download for xda members:

Little update.
I turned back to factory settings, then did a full wipe, cache wipe, dalvik wipe. I was so annoyed I even did system wipe manually from advanced options in recovery. I reinstalled Epinter CM10 rom, got my apps back thanks to Titanium Backup. Installed GSAM (thanks to saldirai), downloaded SetCpu and chose Nvidia Tegra 2 T20/AP20H, underclocked to 912 mhz. Couldn't done any undervolting sadly, says something about governor.
Now I'm checking battery stats and temperature by GSAM, so far no complaints and better from yesterday BUT I haven't use my phone heavily yet. Temperature changes between 26-31 Celsius degrees, battery drops %1-2 percent on use -also it needs calibration- with only wifi use which is always on. I'll update this post if anything changes.
Update: I think I've found the problem. When I choose The Weather Channel widget to "use my location" phone immediately starts to get warm. Weird point is, this wasn't an issue before. Apart from that I'm playing New Star Soccer and Carmageddon for 3-4 hours with wi-fi full time on and battery drops to %30. I'm really happy about that. Normal battery temperature is about 25-32 during the day and different from before it quickly gets cold after I stop playing games. Just like before.
