Fist Impressions with Radar/WP7 - HTC Radar

I just got my Radar in the mail today and I have to say, my first impressions are very good. I'm coming from Android so when I saw the kind of dated specs for this phone, I was a little hesitant. But just like the all the reviews say, this phone is buttery smooth with plenty of power. You can't judge this phone against Android cause it's two different OS's. Windows doesn't need the horsepower that Android needs and the software integration with the hardware is tight and beautiful.
Love the hardware as well. Coming from a Galaxy S, I was happy with the performance but the phone was just too cheap and plasticy for me to ever REALLY love it's looks. The weight and unibody construction on this phone is awesome and I love it.
The unremovable battery might have been a deal breaker for me with a high end Android phone as I had an extra battery for my Galaxy S. But all the reviews said this phone gets well over a day of with moderate use so I'm not sweating that anymore.
NO LIKE::: There's not much I don't like and it's gonna take me a little longer than a few hours to get used to this phone. However, there is one thing about this OS that is bothering me. Font size!! Lets start with the browser....No setting in the browser to make the webpage larger like in android. And when you try to zoom in, the text doesn't re-flow. Also, font size in the people section like in your twitter feed is small as well. I don't have the best eyes but they're already starting to hurt. This complaint is pretty minor but in a way, it's major as well. If you get tired of using certain features on your phone cause it makes your eyes hurt, then that's kinda of a problem.
Overall though, love this phone and I'm happy with the purchase.
Oh and one more thing to add. The call quality isn't very good at all.

The text reflows if you double tap. It's by design.

Yes but only a little bit. The text still isn't large enough for me to comfortably read, at least for a long time. I'm talking about pinching and zooming as close as you want and the words re-wrap to fit the screen like in Android, so you don't have to scroll back and forth. Other than that, I'm happy with the browser. I think it's a smoother experience on WP7.
And honestly, my complaint above about small font throughout the OS is starting to get to me even more. The things I do most on a phone are taking in info, like browsing my favorite sites, Twitter, Facebook, and RSS. And all these processes hurt my eyes after a while. Example, look at the Facebook app. The font is small cause the top of the screen is taken up by FACEBOOK and then the tittle of the page like MOST RECENT. I actually love the facebook app, it's just the small font I hate. I wish I had a bigger phone cause I think it would be Ok if it was a 4.3 inch screen or so.
In the end, I hate to say it cause I love this OS but I think i'm gonna sell this phone. I'll just have to wait until a bigger phone comes out or Microsoft makes it an option to make the font bigger everywhere. It sucks cause this OS is so much more beautiful and cohesive than anything else. I'm a big fan, but my eyes aren't letting me enjoy the experience. I hope to be back to WP7 soon.

and that screen was tiny haha. here is what everyone is saying.
"The HTC Titan is quite large thanks to its 4.7-inch display. We were slightly disappointed to find that the resolution for this LCD is standard WVGA–480 x 800 pixels. This means the dots per inch (dpi) specification will be quite low, and users may be able to make out individual pixels in some situations, which can be unpleasant when reading text. However, it should make viewing videos a joy, especially when sharing the screen with friends."
I would love to check out the phone myself. but dont have $600 to put into one lol.
even if you can see things fine.. why would they put qHD on the sensation and then 720p display on the rezound, etc. but not the titan when it has a even BIGGER screen? that just confuses me xD maybe it has something to do with WP7.

i just got one radar for my wife.... i like the size and the aluminium body.. the camera is good, and takes panorama shots as well..
smoother then my HD7...

I'm coming from the hd7 also. And I find the size of the radar and its screen to be to annoying. Font size is an issue for me as well. The plus? WiFi tethering.

So, is the tethering free? It was so easy to activate and use, but I don't want any surprise charges.

Every negative comment I have heard about the Titan's screen is from people who don't actually own it or have used it and are just speculating. I'll search for more reviews (since I plan to buy the Titan Friday) and see if I can find anything else out.

here are my first impressions of this nice device (in german)
But I've got a question by the way? Is it normal that the alphabetical jumplist in apps menu is missing?

No. That should be there...odd.

According to :
http://www.reddit.com/r/wp7/comments/l9cet/quick_question_about_icon_in_app_jump_list/
You get the letters in the app list when you have more than 45 applications.

Screen quality

i have the photon , but i really dont like the screen quality (sharpness and color wise)compared to my old epic. not trying to troll here, just to ask if anyone think it can be fixed with a software update or is it a hardware issue?
The general consensus is that's just how the phone is. However some lucky people don't seem to notice screens quality (or lack thereof).
Welcome to the PenTile display.
Just the way it is. For best results, try to hold the phone far away.
I think it's actually a pretty cool technology.

Coming from the Epic, who's Super AMOLED screen also uses a pentile subpixel arrangement also mind you, you shouldn't really be noticing a sharpness difference between them. But yes, any and literally all LCDs do look duller and more muted than the Super AMOLED. It's just a nature of the technology.

Well, I can say that, due to it's white subpixels, it is a brighter display that is much more viewable in sunlight. It is also much better on toast.
Wilty
I watch videos all the time on my phone and I don't like it. It is too grainy, the color is off, too much sharpness, black is too dark and any hint of light in the scene and its too bright. HD quality videos look pretty good but lower resolution videos just look bad.
I see the problem in dark scenes where there is very little light you can't differentiate any objects in the dark area. Its all a blur. In the same scene the face has little light on it but it will be over satuated. Its like someone is shining a flashlight in his face. If any of you watch Showtime's Dexter you will see what I mean as the show has a lot of scenes in dark warehouses.
Yes I think they can make it better with software. They can turn down the sharpness. They can allow a little light to be on during dark scene rather then let it be all black (total absence of light). They can try different color temperature because right now all the human skin looks too red to me. They can dial down the intensity of white on lighted scenes.
Just got home with my Photon, which I bought primarily because it's a world phone and specs looked pretty good. Gotta agree with OP, the display is piss poor. Just might return it for something else. Kinda mad I turned in my EVO. Overall I played $99. We'll see...sigh.

One thing that is kind of cool, is that the CEO actually replied to (and blogged about) an AndroidForums thread discussing the P4G screen. Spend some time reading that thread for even greater detail about the merits of the Pentile screen.
Granted, it's the CEO of Pentile, so obviously they have a bit of a bias... but she also offers fascinating technical insight behind the technology as well.
I'm very happy with the screen myself, very easy to read in sunlight especially but very bright in general (which i like). The colors were "different" compared to the evo and evo 3d I had prior but after a few hours, I started noticing more color and details in apps that I hadn't ever seen before. I feel it looks much better overall vs the evo and evo 3d. Yes, I do see the checkerboard when the display is off if I look at the right angle but I dont notice it when the screen is on.
This phone has so many pluses, and the screen is one of them to me.

You are seriously making me think that something is wrong with my phone, man. Cuz if what I'm seeing on mine is consistent throughout, there's no way a person can think it looks good. Some of the pictures look like they are in 8-bit. I'm really disappointed.

Yeah, i'd maybe compare it to the store display if possible because I think mine looks excellent, and the display in my local stores looks really good too. I usually keep my display cranked up pretty high, and it has much better blacks and white levels then i ever had on my evo or evo 3d.

I played some Netflix movies and they looked really bad to a point where I'm like Motorola couldn't have released a multi-media phone with such piss poor video and picture quality. I'm taking back the phone tomorrow to switch it out.
Here's another question. I put in my sdcard from my EVO and none of the pictures fill the screen. I noticed the same thing on the carousel view in the FB integration. The pictures don't fill the screen. Any ideas?

How does it look if you use a different Gallery app like QuickPic?
I, for one like the screen. There is no "burn in" like the galaxy s phones and the Nexus S. I can see the pixel separation, but it doesn't bother me a bit. Maybe you guys need to quit making out with your screens.
I'm not looking for fantastic. I'm coming from the EVO which, even though washed out compared to a Super Amoled, looked fine to me. The problem appears that in areas of high contrast or in shadows, the blacks are too black so picture actually looks blotchy. Believe me when I tell you I'm not the overly picky type. But image quality is definitely a step down compared to my Evo.

Nice explanation of PenTile. I also have no issues with the display and think it is quite good in comparison to my E4G. I wonder if the different perceptions are due to astigmatism. Last year I got lens implants that corrected most of my astigmatism (some remaining, but not much). Maybe people with a lot of uncorrected astigmatism are more sensitive to the display? Maybe it's the opposite and astigmatism makes the effect harder to see and I have just enough astigmatism left to make it not noticeable?
I thought the display was fine, and while I could see the screen door effect, only really noticed it while looking for it.
Then I installed a game where blue was a predominant color used in the background, Wisp Lite, currently featured on the Android Market. Anyone would immediately notice the screen door effect on the background, it was so obvious.
Mulling if this matters enough for me to consider returning it.

First Impressions on your new Nokia 800

Lets start a thread purely about your first thoughts on the Nokia 800 and woudl you recommend us to upgrade to one of these phones..
My first impression was wow that screen looks amazing with windows pone. The black really is true black and the ever so slight curve at the edges means it so nice to swipe. My only gripe is the 16gb though i use my zune for music so not that bad and that the screen could of streched a tad more to the edges of the phone. Saying that though i dont mind 3.7 i think its actually a nice size. The other think i notice is that yes it may be a "plastic" phone it feels so solid in the hand. My desire or hd7 have not felt so well put together.
Oh i forgot another design flaw is that all the buttons are down one side making it really hard to find a car dock that does not press the power.
loving my lumia 800, very pleased with it. just upgrded from an n900 which was amazing. its very different to the n900 and there are a few improvements needed but still loving the lumia.
agreed with the lacking in memory or card slot.
not being able to use the phone as a mass storage device is a huge massive fail and going to cause me problems at work.
Very Impressed
I've had this for 3 days now, and it's just a dream to use.
I previously had an HTC Desire (rooted and running the latest CM Mod on 2.3.7), which I found was pretty decent, but the lack of internal storage was driving me crazy, (system, internal storage only, apps were updating and getting bigger forcing me to uninstall apps that I actually wanted!).
Even though the screens of these 2 phones seem the same on paper (3.7" AMOLED, 800x480 resolution), the Nokia's just looks leaps and bounds better, there's no pinkish tinge on low brightness settings and the colours just pop. Also, whatever Nokia have done to make it work better in outdoor lighting has worked too. On my Desire, I could not see anything on the screen outside on a bright day, even with screen brightness at full. The Nokia is still clear outside, even at medium brightness.)
The only gripes I have are OS related, and are not that significant. I was surprised to see that I was unable to change the browser home page for example, but the most annoying thing is not being able to scrub through audio tracks. Having to hold down the next track button, especially on long tracks is pretty poor. It seems to work on some locally stored videos, but not on the YouTube site for example, also, I'm surprised that there is no dedicated YouTube app, (glorified bookmark != app)!
I'm very happy with it in general, and the guys at the office are suitably impressed too.

Is this your first foray into WP7? This limitation is by no means a fail on the part of Nokia. WP7 does not allow for hot swapping of memory cards and also does not allow for USB Mass Storage function due to the way that it treats external memory as internal memory.

I still dont get what is wrong with a memory stick on your keys. Its easier and more practical and as an IT tech i would deffo say i would rather give the emplies them then use mobile phones. I agree it would be better to have more files supported by zune but to get into the file system is no benefit then to break it.
I am new user in WP7
I think Lumia 800 is great. I love its shape and the screen.
But seems the battery life is not really long (even compare to my existing Android Nexus one)
I love it too and will be my next phone as soon as I can buy one unlocked and unbranded. So far no one seems to be selling them this way.

I have some questions i hope you guys can answer me.
Do the Lumia have a blue tint when you tilt the phone on the screen like the N9 have. That was really not nice looking on The N9 and annoyed my eye (very visual and need things to be clear and sharp and continious colour wise)?
Also do the txt and white/light backgrounds/icons have that magenta edge on the left side like the N9?
If yes is it as bad as on the N9?

In my experience no and no. The screen looks pretty much perfect from all angles and I've noticed no issues with magenta tinting. I thought I did at first but it was confirmed as being nothing by a few other people
Agreed, the phone screen is bang on, had a Omnia 7 before my lumia 800 and the screen is just as good, also the screen doesn't appear to attract anywhere near the amount of fingerprints as the Omnia 7 outdoor work is easy too, screen works very well.

Guys, more impressions please! Very interested in this device
And please, check the phone vibration level. Is it ok to use it on vibro mode in pocket?
Love this phone. Moving on from android and the windows 7 UI just looks so much fresher. I love the WP7 people hub integration with social networks.
But on to the phone. The Nokia design is really nice and even with the phone case that was provided free with it, it has very good styling. The screen is so black that you can't tell where it ends and the case begins because the glass stretches all the way across the front.
Camera seems to be good. However, I did take some pics yesterday and found that if you tap the screen to focus and take a shot it sets the shot to macro which was annoying. That's probably a WP7 "feature"
I don't really like the power button on the side to be honest but can see why it has been put there. When it's in my car dock, I can't activate the phone because of the way it is held in the cradle. Will have to rethink that.
Call quality is what you would expect from Nokia. I don't know if the signal quality is any better than anything else. I have tried the speaker phone and it is good as well. Nice and clear.
Not sure I can comment on any more Nokia specific features as I've only had the phone for 5 days. Do give the battery a chance to condition as it is getting better each day for me. Remember to do a full charge.
Stu

how do you tolerate the screen?

I was playing around with this phone at a Verizon store today and noticed weird fuzziness on text & around icons. I thought there was something wrong with my eyes at first, but then realized none of the other phones in the store were doing it. I then went to another RAZR that was on display and it was the same way also. I could see it holding the phone roughly 2ft away... granted, if I extended my arm out I couldn't tell anymore.
wow though.. when. saw all the reviews of people comlaining about the screen I didn't realize how bad it actually is. granted, I don't wear glasses & have 20/20 vision so I'm not sure if everyone is affected. you'd think they would at least have some sort of blur filter to mask it.
What are you talking about.... I compare my razr with high brightness setting with my gf iPhone 4s, beat the retina display
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA App
No problems with my display, looks great all day all night. Came from atrix though, so maybe thats the deal.
I cant see any Pentile effects until its less than 1 foot 3in away. Past that I dont see it anymore. My viewing distances is between 1ft 3in and 1ft 9 in. If you can see it at 2 feet away....you have very good, exceptional eye sight.
And when I say I can see it...thats the closest distance I can start seeing it if I focus on the icon edges and texts. And it seems to be certain color texts on certain color backgrounds. Cuz on my home screens I can see the effect real good. I tried a website and I cant see it at all.
Actually....I must have short arms too cuz at 2 feet away thats like almost at the extreme length of my arms. EDIT...Ok...sitting down I use the phone about at that distance...lol. But stretched out in front of me its uncomfortable.
As far as it being bad, real bad, extremely bad...lol. Everybody's entitled to their opinion.
Hey....at extreme closeness for me, yea its bad around icons and texts. But thats at extreme closeness....for me. To me...some ppl make it out like the entire screen looks like a screen door. Thats not the case. I also think everyone doesnt have the same viewing distances to see the effects. And I have pretty decent eye sight. So you will see some ppl that dont see it at all, period. And some that see it like you do.
So how do ppl tolerate it? The ppl that dont, cant see it....there is nothing to tolerate. Ppl that can see it under specific conditions...like me...those specific conditions are not normal use for me. Like viewing angles of most LCD screens on phones. They wash out, fade bad. I always look at my phone screen straight on. So Amoled viewing angles dont really matter unless you are trying to show ppl things on your phone. Noprmally I would want them to see the phone screen straight on anyway. Its all about specific conditions...

yeah... if your eyes don't notice it its not a problem. similiar thing happened when I traded in a couple of Sony PSP 2001 models so I could grab the new 3001 model. I could see big time intrrlacing/scanline effects all over the screen(mainly when there was a lot of motion). I took it back complaining and the guy at the counter said he couldn't see it.... yet I found a bunch of forums/reviews of people specifying that they had the same experiences as me.
oh, and at 2ft away I could just barely notice it... but at about 1ft away it really bothered me and kept feeling like there was something wrong with my eyes. damn though, the phone does look & feel really cool.
btw, my eyes may be good, but my hearing is crap from years of partying & dj'ing. everytime someone talks to me I'm all "pardon?"...

Most reviews actually like the display in relation to the actual bad reviews of the display. I agree there are better displays like the Rezound, but the Razr display is not as bad as implied. Does look funky next to the Rezound though.
yea, went to verizon to compare rezound and razr sceens last week. first went to razr and it looked really good. then to rezound with the wavy dots live wallpaper and was amazed. walked back to razr and instantly saw all the pentile dots everywhere. it all changes with perspective.
maybe its the crack you were smoking... this screen is fantastic! is it perfect? nope, but which one is?

May be he just saw lock screen. Yes you can saw pixels clearly on blur lock screen. But after unlock it is fine.

Razr's screen is great once your eyes adapt to it which usually takes a day. Rezounds screen might be better but i am not sure if it can produce colors like razrs. Plus dont forget that rezound is 2x thicker than razr.

iPhone 4... Sorry but its true. Getting my razr today and I'm praying I can tolerate the display. I've been trying to get rid of my iPhone for a while now, because it's driving me insane. (great hardware, no awesome hardware, but iOS? Lol what a crappy OS).
But every android I had so far just sucked. S2? Ugly as hell. sensation? Are you serious with that display?
And now the razr. I really hope third ones the charm. Was thinking about galax nexus but no sd card is a no go. Why is it so hard to make a good phone? Somewhere around a 4" screen, notification led, sd card slot and a display that doesn't give you a headache when you're reading an article for 20 minutes.
Would get the rezound, but for some reason I do not understand it's not coming to Europe...

I went to one Verizon Store and the Screen looked Great!!! I went to another Verizon Store and it did not look as good as the other. What I am saying to you is that in every store the screens on the RazR can change.
If you compare the RAZR display to the SGS2 one, the only problem is that RAZR is PenTile Matrix while SGS2 is RGB.
RGB looks really better (only for resolution), while the RAZR's PenTile (not an OLD PenTile, it's a new one, the pixels are really small compared to the oldies...like ATRIX as well) is better: better vibrance, better colors, better resolution.
It's bad at the beginning, but if you use it for a couple of days, you'll see it isn't bad!
Ask yourself why most of these complainers who try to throw some **** to RAZR's fantastic display, dont even mention that their phones' poor signal reception, call quality and low speaker volume, cheap build quality, erratic battery issues in their own forums ?
Just my 2cents.

And I really think that the lock screen is done by design. If you look closely at the area with no letters or numbers it looks like mesh. Look at the area while you are unlocking thats not part of the lock screen, around the lock icon, and it looks clear. Like look at the notification shade when its pulled down. You can see thru it and it looks like mesh. I think its by design.
Like on the Bionic's lock screen and car dock screen.

How many of you have you experienced ghosting on Titan's screen?

How many of you have you experienced ghosting on Titan's screen?
And how do you define "ghosting"?
This is the only thing that bothers me before getting a Titan.
Thank you.
I just ordered my titan, so I can't say for sure, but I pretty sure ghosting stopped being a problem in early 2010, and I have never seen any portable display with ghosting issues. It will happen if the device is too cold, as the pixels start freezing... But what makes you think this would be a problem?
Sent from my HD2 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Ghosting is what happens when you have slow pixel response time and colors are most notably slow to change. The effect is that animations will leave a ghostly trail behind them as they go, usually lasting a second or two.

These are some of the comments in wpcentral review of the Titan:
But the HTC Titan... Big but felt nice and balanced. Camera was nice including the quality of the FF camera. What I noticed was huge amounts of ghosting. George Ponder says there isnt any ghosting like the other HTC devices but that is the first thing I noticed on the Titan was the ghosting. I didnt even know that was an issue and this review was not out when I looked at the Titan about four days ago.
- When scrolling on the homescreen the letters are a blur.
- Web browsing was not very appealing because whether scrolling on full screen or zoomed in scrolling, the blurring effect was such a turn off I stopped demoing the phone, but not before going to the same websites on my phone, the Titan and the Focus S. The Titan was the only one with the ghosting effect.

Hey George, Thanks for replying to my comment I made. I went to another ATT store that had the S and Titan on display. (The phones did not have the demo software on them and the salesman didnt even know they had the phones, typical, but I digress). I dont know if it is really called ghosting but if you have the Titan available go to a site on two different WPhones. I tested gamespot.com. Slightly zoom in and scroll up or down. The words turn into a blur while moving. This blurring effect does not occur on my focus or really on the S either. Perhaps Im just fixated on it but Im sure Im not the only one, lol.

You can check the review here (the review itself says there is no ghosting):
http://www.wpcentral.com/att-htc-titan-review
I am a bit confused. Is there ghosting on the Titan or not?
I don't see it on mine, scrolling through the apps list.
I'm still waiting for my Titan in the mail but I did notice some ghosting on the one I played with at the store. I'm hoping it's not too noticeable on the device I receive. The ghosting on the Focus S is much worse though and the main reason I returned it.
My question is: Who cares about ghosting on a cellphone? It's not that big deal when the screen is 4.7" Maybe on a tv with 40" or more it would be a problem..

If you've ever seen it, it's annoying as f***.
Very rarely do I notice some minor ghosting on the Titan's sreen. I have to say that its much much better than it was on the HD7/HD7S.
Now I never found ghosting very annoying, but I see how it can be.
No ghosting whatsoever. UK SIM FREE.

I'm not going to term it "ghosting" but there is definitely some image degradation when scrolling; it is especially noticeable with words, like on the app list, web browser, twitter apps, etc.

Is that when you scroll extremely fast?
I think I've seen that on various devices including the recent ones from Nokia as well as Samsung Nexus!
If you push the scroll extremely fast that where the S-LCD/LCD coughs up! But on normal day to day scrolling you won't notice it as such.
However weirdly enough, I only see this for milli-seconds and on abnormally quick scrolling. Normal day to day use don't show it on my Titan. Unless someone wants to make a video and show me what am I missing!
I can agree to the term that the Titan is ghosting when scrolling in the menu.. U see it especially on the text under the tiles in the full app list.. Black and white background doesn't make a difference either for me.. I think the ghosting is the same on both.. BUT for ME it doesn't make a point, because ghosting isn't that bad to watch when it's on a small screen.. My eyes don't get tired from it either, because you don't scroll the screen up and down for several hours.. Can't see why this should be such a big deal either..
I've been playing with my titan and I really cannot see any ghosting at all.
Go to a text app like twitter, or even the app list. Scroll at normal speed and look at the text.

ATRIX user opinions

Hey guys ! I own a HTC EVO 3D right now, but I'm going to switch it for an ATRIX 4G tomorrow.
I want to ask you... How do you feel about the ATRIX's screen? I know it's a TFT LCD with the RGBW matrix, which is what makes my brain twist and say "OH SH*T NO". What's your say on that?
Also... voice quality... Is it loud & clear enough? I mean, compared to other phones you might have owned...
And the camera?
-----
And... most of all... the chipset?! How is it going for you?! I hear it is actually less performant & more power-hungry than Qualcomm's dual core, but I don't really know...
awh its a great phone......but stock gb rom sucks. u wud love it if you are a social networking fan!! for me im pretty happy with my cm flavored atrix. the chip is good, camera is okay.....and about sound i dont give huge scores! display hmmm u shud love it!!

This whole weekend I've been going back and forth, deciding to trade it for an ATRIX, then changing my mind and returning to HTC... Now I was sure I was gonna make the switch, but here I go again, returning to HTC.
The ATRIX's screen is TFT, as opposed to HTC's S-LCD, and that wouldn't be THAT MUCH of a problem if it didn't had the RGBW matrix... I read a lot on the phone, and that would just ruin my experience, probably making me feel the urge to blend the phone or something.
I think I'll stick to HTC... If only Motorola were to use standard RGB...
good luck

as you are concerned about the screen, maybe i can help a little. first off, i have really great eyesight, pentile matrix displays make me want to hurt people, but its not all bad. the qHD resolution makes the subpixles much harder to see, i personally can only see them when its about a foot or closer to my face, some colors i can see it farther away, such as green, i can see some distortion about a foot and a half away form my face. but its very hard to see, its a HUGE difference form say, a captivates pentile screen.
next thing to keep in mind is the colors. yellow is a big complaint, i dont notice it to much but the colors are far from perfect, i feel the screen is a hair cold by default, and there are ways to reduce the blue if you are rooted, i did a guide on it a while ago.
last thing is gradients, they look bad, that is the only thing i really am disappointed with, you can see artifacting as the colors shift, although i dont know if im crazy but it seems better then before.
keep in mind that all of these things you will get use to with a little time, i got use to them quickly and i am a stickler for screen quality. one of the goods of the screen though is the battery life, the type of display saves a ton of juice thus making one of the longest lasting phones of its time. now that, I love.
im not trying to bash my own phone here, i love it, and always will, its an amazing device and was everything i wanted when i got it. the screen is something i can live with, and the the battery life plus the higher resolution makes up for it in my book.
let me know if there is anything else you want to know, hope i was a little helpful.

I do a lot of reading on my phone, and having that screen would kill me... Plus the gradients thing... I noticed it in a 480p YouTube video, ffs, lol.
The battery is all nice, the chipset seems good enough, but even though the screen is all bright in the sun, its downs are making me wanna throw rocks at it, lol.

It's hard for me to answer this.
I loved the EVO 3D. The back design made it attractive, and the overall body... it was nice, alright. Also, the big screen was neat.
There were a few things that made me change the phone. The screen was somewhat yellowish (had to use Filter Your Screen to add a blue alpha so it would not be so yellowish on white menus and so brownish on gray menus - but that still didn't fix it 100%). The earpiece was creaky, and so was the loudspeaker on maximum volume...
I wanted the ATRIX for it has a bigger battery, a decent chipset, and a more robust design. I mean... the body is more compact - feels better in the hand, more secure, I'd say. Besides, on this phone I no longer feel the urge to smash it on the wall for yellow whites or creaky voices in-calls.
Also, the screen is just AMAZING. Even though it's a TFT, and it's got PenTile, I find it really nice. The whites are PURE WHITE. The blacks are BLACK!!! Also, if you know that ICS wallpaper... it really looks better on the ATRIX. The colors were somewhat washed on the EVO 3D - proof that S-LCD still needed work. To be honest, I think this TFT screen can be compared to the Samsung Galaxy S's SUPER AMOLED.
Even if I turn down the screen's brightness to the minimum, the whites still blind me during night time, especially if I hold the phone somewhat close to my face. On full brightness, in the sunlight, it ROCKS !!!
The only thing I wished for is some aluminium on the body. It's all plasticky... good thing I have an iCase Pro (MOMAX) case, otherwise... I wouldn't really like it .

Don't get me wrong... MY phone was a bad unit - about the yellowish screen. Another friend had the 3VO and it was white, but compared to my ATRIX now, the ATRIX is white and his 3VO yellow.
The creaking earpiece was also a problem that occured later - I believe some water got in, idk.
The EVO 3D is a great phone.

Nice Review. The atrix is a BEAST especially when throwing Neutrino behind it!
I came from a iPhone 4 to the Atrix a few months ago and it has it's ups and downs. My only real gripe of any consequence is the battery life. It isnt terrible, but you have to do a little tweaking (at least with CM7, I found so). I've been playing with ICS on it and so far have noticed a slight improvement in that arena. Plus ICS feels like a much nicer UI overall.
I love the size of the screen on, and I personally have found no problem with it. My main use for the phone (other than calls) is web browsing and reading using the Kindle and nook, and aldiko book readers.
And music playback of course. I have one playlist or another going most of the time if I am not talking to someone (desk job, might as well get my tune on).
My headphone jack failed a month or so after I bought the phone (used, off ebay), and while it was at Motorola getting fixed (warranty job, only paid shipping to them) I was back on my I4 for a couple weeks and I felt a lot better getting the Atrix back, and not just for Android. You just get addicted to the larger screen so easy.
My secondary gripe of any matter is the placement of the power button. Just feels very awkward to use 1 handed. But I added a wake on volume mod instead, and that problem was solved.

I hate the iPhone. Overpriced, tiny 3.5 incher... Besides, Android is much better. Otherwise I would have gotten an iPhone...
If the EVO 3D unit I had didn't had those few things that I didn't like about (malfunctions, that is), I would've sticked to it. Just letting ya know. I consider the EVO 3D above the ATRIX (in some aspects, at leasts).
But compared to the iPhone 4S... The ATRIX wins big time. Bigger battery, better CPU, bigger RAM, better/nicer OS, bigger screen... The only thing I'm concerned about is the GPU. I know it's an 8-core UltraLowPower processor, but... does it really perform as good as/better than the PowerVR's or Adreno's?! I, for one, would say no but that might be some driver-related issue, which should/might be fixed when the official ICS drops...
Im glad you liked the Atrix. Its a pretty dam nice phone, im im love with it. Very fast and smooth. qHD screens are awesome. Great battery life. Feels very nice on my hand. Nice design, IMO. Welcome to the atrix family.

Ouch, gonna have to disagree there. Nothing really beats iPhones os, its sooo simple and easy to use. Best thing about it is that they DONT need quad core, even my ipad2 runs perfect with gaming. The OS is so perfectly optimized that even with my wife's 3gs, there are only a few hiccups. The one thing that I will agree with is the 3.5 inch screen. That's too small. Imagine a 4.3 inch with that retina display....mmmm......
But these are all personal opinions, and no one will ever agree.
