Custom Roms - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am not a developer.but as a user i want something interesting.
But i can be your tester and let you know about your Rom.
I have seen many custom Roms and tried it on my SGS 2 i am not happy, all the roms say they have changed this and that but no visible changes just some color changes and EYE wash if any.
If there is any developer who can do something different rather than using the stupid Touch Wiz/Stupid MIUI which is like IOS .
let me know i will try it on my SGS2 if i am happy i will donate as much as i can.
Or give me pure google i know u will talk about drivers for specific devices include it your rom and give atleast pure google experience.
Every custom Rom change log is always long they say they changed so many things but i dont see any difference as a user and not seen so much problems in stock to fix. i test custom roms and i go back to my stock by restoring.
I am talking about development not modifying the existing software.
So many custom roms are out there but non of them are interesting i mean nothing new.

The fact is stock is excellent, there's not much wrong with them, if you want aosp try cm7.
We as users have a large choice of roms to choose from, the next best would be to have cm7 with some aspects of touchwiz but impossible to do with closed drivers.

Sounds like all you want is a new launcher. Search the market and try different ones out, or search for video examples of them, there's plenty out there.

You could take a look at what claystone 3d launcher is upto.

Couple of Silly Questions about Vibrant ROMs

Couple of Silly Questions:
1). Is it possible to modify the open source ROMs available to use TouchWiz? I happen to be in the minority that like it. If not, however, no big deal.
2). Question for those that have flashed a new rom: Is it possible to get the Avatar app and the Sims 3 app to continue to work? Or do they just work out of the box?

It depends on what you mean by open source. Eugene373 was playing around with an AOSP build for the Vibrant, but it hasn't gone much of anywhere lately. His latest custom roms (Vibrant9/VibrantR3) were built primarily for getting rid of as much of Touchwiz as medically possible and they are basically stripped down and customized versions of the stock ROM. CyanogenMod 6.1 is the only other open source ROM being worked on and it's still in alpha. I don't see Cyanogen or any of the team members working on our port caring about Touchwiz as it sort of defeats the purpose of stock Android in the first place.
The basic point behind custom or aosp roms is that you don't like Touchwiz and prefer stock android, so it's a bit of a self-defeating strategy to think about adding back what the mods are deliberately removing.
If you like Touchwiz (as I do) then I'd say stick with stock and tweak/customize from there. It's too much work to approach from the other end and makes little sense. I'm basically stock, rooted, lots of the bloatware removed, MobileAP and the Captivate Camera installed, EXT3 lagfix...and that's about it. Phone is smooth as butter.
If you are running a custom rom, it is possible to simply push back the Avatar "app", as it's just a shortcut to the movie file on the sd card. You can also just run the VideoPlayer and start it from there regardless, so I guess that's a matter of preference. I got rid of the pointless icon. The Sims 3 install apk can be found in one of the system dump threads in the development section.

[Q] MIUI...who's tried it?

1. I keep seeing MIUI roms pop up all over. Could someone explain to me in plain English what exactly it is? From the screenshots I've seen it looks like the iphone...and there are Chinese iphone clones with (an actual) MIUI os out there right? But these roms are android OS modified to look like MIUI, which is a clone of Iphone? am I correct so far?
2. From the posts I've read, it's still buggy as far as GPS amongst other bugs? Also the UI itself has no app drawer and uses the grouping icons on the desktop like IOS? I've played around with the nephews ipod thouch, and it is annoying as hell...you can't just have a nice clean desktop with a few app shortcuts to say cam/mp3/navi and then a button to access the rest of your apps? It's all there in your face with groups of apps/games taking up your whole homescreen? (again unless you download some mod, which has to run in the background taking up resources) ?
If you have used a miui rom I'd love to get some feedback, before I try to flash one...again it seems to me it's trying to clone an iphone, in which case why not just get one?
I wasn't sure about the MIUI ROM's at first. Slowly they started popping up on almost every device. A few friends ran it on their phones and that's what originally got me to flash it. You are correct in that there is no app drawer. Luckily for me I use folders like none other. It was a pain and still is every time I update, but I am patient and take the time. I just make a folder named "apps" and place all my apps in there! BOOM!!! EPIC app drawer action! It really has started to grow on me. I enjoy the ease of customizing all the theme options that's a big plus for me and I never really messed with that too much on other ROM's. Its so simple with MIUI you can't help your self. Its really pretty slick and I have no bugs to report. GPS werks fine for me and that is something I need to werk. Check it out, it might be for you, it might not. Only one way to find out.
Good luck!

[Q] Deactivated phone - possibly stupid question

I have an old Fascinate that is no longer in service that I'd like to give to my kids for games and geocaching.
Is there any way to permanently disable the phone/3G data features, or is there a custom ROM with these features removed?
I've tried googling around and found some ROMs for this, but nothing specifically for the Fascinate.

Id say start with THS Build 14, and delete Phone.apk, TelephonyProvider.apk, MMS.apk, and Contacts.apk. Id say that's it if its deactivated, because then they cant call and accidentally activate it somehow.
Take a look at the GeeWiz thread in the development section. DJP has a version of the ROM specifically designed for what you are trying to do.
Good luck.

Thanks to both of you.
I'll give GeeWiz a look, it's cool that someone is actually developing a ROM to utilize unused but otherwise great phones.
Short term I may try a variation on Cookiemonster's suggestion since the phone has CM7.2 on it now and removing those apks might be simpler than a complete wipe and rebuild.
:good:

[Q] How to chose between roms?

Hello everybody,
since i am new to android roms, i found the amount of available roms pretty overwhelming, just making it harder for me to choose one that could fit my needs.
I was searching for a feature comparison of the (or some) available roms, something like a table or so, but i wasnt able to find one. Is there something (regularly) updated like this out there?
It would be very nice, if you guys could recommend me some roms to take a look at, or to link some resources for a general overview of different roms!
My (personal) needs for a rom:
Its very important for me, to use a stable rom, which allows usb-debuging because i am developing android games.
I would love to use the latest android version and a rom which allows to update to later versions. And updating without deleting all the installed apps and files would be heaven on earth.
Motion controll is nice, but as far as i could extract from this threads, there is no stock jelly bean rom with this feature enabled, because its Samsung related, is that right?
I hope to find some answers on my questions.
Regards, psdev
Try wannam lite. Its my favorite

Maybe give a shot on Android Revolution HD and also Omega Rom. These roms are my favourite.
I saw that omega rom seems like the most famous one. But as i told i have no idea how it compares to others, could you please explain what it makes it so famous? (is it recently updated, does it has more features...)
But thanks so far for your answers!

Custom ROM Spotify

Everytime im using a custom rom, i cant use spotify properly. It crashes randomly, playback stops etc.
tried cyanogenmod, slimbean and slimkat.
Or is there an fix for this issue?
thanks
Run stock (dual boot ??)/
why would i use dual boot if i want a clean rom an use spotify as one of my main apps?
Because fu*king app developers (regular ones, like the ones who develop apps like Spotify) don't have fu*king users of custom roms on their radar. They're only fu*king interested in the 99.99% of phone users who use their phone in a fu*king 'regular' manner. They don't fu*king care whether their apps work with custom roms or not. It doesn't make one fu*king iota of difference to their business whether their app works for you with your fu*king custom rom setup or not.
Now...
You can either fu*king accept that, or you can gnash your teeth & cry about it. I gave you a suggestion based on similar frustrations I have experienced with many apps over the past couple of yrs when I've been running custom roms.
The bottom line is, if you want every app to work guaranteed, run a fu*king stock rom or custom rom that is Samsung-based with minimal deviations from stock. If you want to run fu*king AOSP roms, expect many 'vanilla' apps not to work
If this app is that important to you, you know what to do. Also, did it not fu*king occur to you to ask the developers of the fu*king roms in question whether there is any chance of them implementing something on the rom side which may make the app in question work, or even ask the fu*king users of the fu*king roms in question (in the rom threads) whether any of them have been able to figure out a fu*king workaround ?
Given the minimal fu*king traffic we get in Q&A these days, asking a specific question like that you've got f*ck all chance of getting an answer which might help you get a solution. You're far more likely to get that (if a solution is possible, that is) by going 'straight to the source' (I.E the fu*king rom thread), as it were.
See ? I can use fu*king/f*ck/etc in my post too. Thing is, it makes me look just as big an idiot as you looked using it in your post
Edit - Also, did it not occur to you that perhaps a simple build.prop edit might be a way around this, assuming the issue is simply a case of the app reading the build.prop, seeing it's not stock & barfing (it may not be this also, but it's worth trying or finding out if the app checks this) ? If you don't know how/what to edit, that info is easily found by searching here/elsewhere.
