ICS Verified - HTC EVO 3D

Even though most of us understand that the EVO 3D will most certainly get ICS, here's verification so some of us can quit whining:

This means, it'll probably be released for the HTC EVO 3D in March/April, and the Sprint EVO 3D in June. I'll have a new phone before HTC and Sprint get off their ass to make this available.

I didn't even know there is a HTC EVO design 4G.....good to know. Hopefully HTC is true to their word on the "early 2012".

Glad to hear this, although I knew it was coming.

Do you think it was an error that they did not put an (*) by the Evo3D, to indicate that it was a US handset? Just wondering... They could not just update the GSM and leave the CDMA one in the dust, right?

Not 2012, December....

While I'd like to have it then, I highly doubt they will have it out that quickly to us evo3d owners. Took them almost 6mo to push out GB to the evo4g given you prolly could add a month or so of delay associated with the evo3d release then bc it'd be dumb to update the evo4g then release the 3D shortly after...
Just find it odd they say early next yr which would Indicate before April in my book, really b4 march ends. Now begs the question how they couldn't get GB out on evo4g by March this yr either....

That's the same thing the happened last year with the evo 4g(December rumor ) and we got it in June (officially ) so yeah I'm no getting my hopes up I might just trade the 3d for the nexus s lol

I agree that this probably won't happen until June. It's highly unlikely that HTC will stick to the plan of "early 2012".

I don't know about that. On the og evo we got 2.2 two weeks after the Google phone did.

Totally different as that happened just after the release of the phone to begin with and they stated they would be first with 2.2 I think too. How long for 2.3 got on the evo4g?.... Exactly. A long time

Seems like I had a fully working Sense based GB rom on my Evo 2 months before it officially released. April maybe?
I'm looking forward to the leaks .vs the official build which will be 1/2 way old by the time it really launches.
What will suck is being stuck on the leaked stock ICS/Sense kernel for what will feel like forever.

at least we know were getting it. you wan't htc/sprint to "get off their asses"? how bout you go out and make a near perfectly working product for the masses and figure out how to deliver it effectively then. hmmm?

Well, we can always hope!
It seems that in the past we never really new when until it said "you have an update" on your phone. A lot of rumors and a lot of speculation.
I am hoping that article is correct. I am envisioning a December 19th or 26th update. Merry Xmas from us to you kind of thing.
I think that our chances of getting a update soon are strong. With the last major Android that Sprint released being in September(Epic Touch on Sept. 16th). Other carriers are releasing some big phones. Verizon has Nexus Galaxy and Razor(Mid November), At&T with the Vivid and Skyrocket(Nov 6th), and T-mobile with the Amaze.
Some of these phones might not be "better" but they are all newer.
Evo is Sprint's flagship phone. These are all just my opinions. But, we will know for sure pretty soon. Sprint is going to have to do something for the xmas shoppers. We will see what that is.
I have a reliable inside source at the campus....

No...this is the forth week of EVO 3D training in the Sprint Playbook. They got it WAYYYY wrong lmao
I don't think week 4 applies to the 4th week in June. Nothing else in this playbook goes that far. Haus already stated my feelings, that its the 4th week in the playbook, not June. I don't think they would use "week 4" in the playbook to refer to 4th week of June, its pretty vague.

i just went to radio shack and best buy
in general the radio shack dood said:
"pre orders usually go for about a month at most"
"about a real release date i would say mid june"
general manager @ bestbuy mobile
told him i heard early june release his reply
"june 14-27 maybe first week of july but i can tell you we have not got any word on a first week of june release"
again i dont think radio shack, best buy, sprint lead rep, xda "insider" or anyone other than HTC or "high up sprint people" will know a for sure release date
as i JUST switched from tmobile yesterday to sprint
and picked up the nexus s (for now)
i hope its within the next 30 days
but honestly NO ONE with a "inside source" will know
so keep floating dates farther and farther out but we will not see this phone in the general public hands till mid to end june
again this is just a opinion and it may be release the 5th or 6th or w.e. you want to think but look at all these dates.... the G2x had a preorder and store date 3 weeks before hand
sprint isnt doing a last notice release! june 4th is a week away... i bet they will tell us WHEN it will be release on the 4th.... not getting the phone out in silence...
Hell yes, nothing has changed in my book. I still haven't spoken to my source, but on tuesday I'll know for sure. June 5th should and probably will be the release date

the bootloader will come LOCKED either way
june 5th or july 20th
it will be locked and only unlocked by a OTA update or a "leak"

it has been talked about, or should i say speculated about. Truth is not many people really know the plan for the bootloader or even the released. So if it comes locked the bootloader issue could still push the date back if they rather wait for an OTA to be ready so a bunch of people don't start complaining. That is if that really is the solution. Again all specultions

yes its been "speculated about"
but honestly HTC/Sprint will not go through every box to unlock it
its stated BY HTC that evo 3D will come LOCKED
now that means if it comes locked then they will not spend the man hours and money to recall all the e3d's back and do that...

Anybody get this update email from Sprint?

It kinda makes me wonder about when ICS will drop. Seems pretty random to send an email asking you to check for updates. Makes me hopeful...but still doubtful as to when.
Are you running 2.3.3? Maybe that's why they sent you that

Typically, their monthly emails are "discover more things to do with your phone" type of deal. This is the first one mentioning updates. Kind of got me excited for 5 seconds, and disappointed for much longer.

Right, that's kind of how I took it. I usually get these emails for 3 different devices. My 3d, daughters OG and my wife's BB. The only time I recall seeing one stating to check for system update, was when one was available, for my wife's BB. Just got me hopeful was all.
Edit-one other thing just came to mind. I have the feeling it may be important to run ICS with some of the newer firmware updates from 2.17. So perhaps this is another way to prep people (general public) to update, prior to Sprint pushing out ICS in a few months?

the mid jan update included the new adreno drivers, while others(att verizon etc)waited for ics to update thier phones drivers.(im sure its because they knew our ics update would be late) anyways im sure this email is to remind people to update to get the mid jan update, i bet they get alot of complaints about the evo 3d under performing and the last update made this phone scream compared to before

I'd like to think that too, but I seriously doubt it. Why would Sprint want to release an update to ICS for last year's phone right before they release this year's phones? It doesn't make business sense. When they release next year's phones, sprint stores will get a lot more traffic in and out of them, and the 3D can't be catching people's eyes still because it's on the cutting edge, it has to appear outdated, at least while sprint is dealing with the new phone rush.
When I bought my 3D, the epic 4g touch was out for about a month or two. The employee who "helped" me pick out a phone was straight up lying to me (maybe she really just had no clue, but then why was she employed at a sprint store?). I was told that the 3D was a slow, outdated, single core phone, 1 ghz processor, and she overexaggerated the epic touch's specs as well. Glad I did my research because she was worthless.
I'm not gonna jump on the nexus and one bandwagon quite yet, this phone is plenty powerful for me right now.

[Q] Question about Sprint's new line up...

Hello all thanks for stopping by. I have recently moved and settled to a new area and I bought my wife's and my phone straight out so we can switch at any time (or kill the contract if we moved outta the country). My android phones thus far have been the htc hero, lg optimus s, and the evo 3D. I got the evo 3d last june because I thought that it'd be like the original (tons of support, the next big thing, a crap ton of of mods). Little did I know that they would keep a lot of the drivers closed sourced and we as a community would have a few fantastic deves but would also run devs away (not just talking about the kernel devs over the past year quite a few have dropped by then been bashed and left). So my big question to everyone and indeed what I am pondering is.... Jump to a SIII as HTC and Sprint abandoned us or give HTC another shot? Both phones will have the same processor but im worried about samsung's build quality ...however I dont want htc to get my money blindly .... or i can just wait...? I dunno ...lol what is everyone else's thoughts?

Sprint is the issue. They are the final step before ICS is released. Follow the order: Google releases Android to the manufacturer > HTC tweaks it an adds Sense > HTC sends to carrier. HTC is not necessarily the blame here. There is a few threads dedicated to the speculation of the ICS release. IMO, it's still coming, but, just from the timing of things, they most likely delayed it so as not to conflict with the release of their new flagship, EVO 4G LTE (pushing more people to upgrade to that).
With the amount of reading and diving in to other forums because people ask me about their phones or I have actually rooted their phones, I prefer HTC phones regardless of the Evo 3D's lack of official ICS ROM (even though there is a VM leak and three ports available for it, one of those ports is a fully functional HTC Sense 3.5, which is what I am running) and the HBOOT 1.5 [email protected] (even though it's also mentioned that having HBOOT 1.5, rooted, S-ON and recovery 4EXT is the way to go).
I prefer the Sense interface. It's my preference. I love the ease of rooting (in most circumstances). I've had my experience of rooting a Samsung Captivate. It was eh. It was easy to root, but, when it came to custom stuff, just eh.

GPS works fine. My wife prefers Samsungs and has the GSII. We've used her GPS several times around Savannah, GA and locally where we live and around Atlanta with no issue. Actually performed better than my Evo 3D at times.
It's more about what you like. I've had the hero, og evo, and now 3d. I still have a epic 4g I got for Christmas and my experience wasn't all that great with it until cm came along. I despise touchwiz although its getting better. Sense does make HTC phones run a little slower cause its a resource hog, but I just love sense. I suggest looking at both and deciding on what you are more comfortable with. Both the s3 and evo lte are great

HTC or Samsung GIII
I'd have to, IMO, that the HTC is worth staying with HTC. I too thought about switching over to the SGIII but in the end, I'm going to stick it out with HTC, as the EVO 3D was my first HTC device and I will say I'm a little disappointed with their support of the device. I'll give them another chance with the EVO 4G LTE and see what happens. After all, I plan on being a smart phone user for way more than the standard 2 yr contract and will switch devices in the future if need be.
HTC has great devices and I can't stand hearing "3d will not get ics"
It's been confirmed. There are processes that have to be done before it will be out. I have seen new phones coming out with ics yes, but how many older devices have gotten officially updated yet. You have the video & the HTC site & the Virgin Mobile version with it.
Cho can get a tattoo of the date on his arm but Dan would have to get one too.

There was a Sprint representative that told Engadget that EVO 3d was getting ICS. Here is the quote.
Sprint VP of Product David Owens told Engdaget during an interview at the CTIA 2012 trade fair that Ice Cream Sandwich update will hit both devices “in the June time frame.”
This was in reference to Evo 3d and Evo 4G design.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here but does anyone have any solid evidence from Sprint that this device is actually going to see ics? I know HTC said June July but that is probably their gsm handsets. Where or when did Sprint Ever say this? Link would be nice cuz I really did like my 3d. And not the stupid video of the guy saying June timeframe either cuz quite honestly I could say that was actually me and not one of u would know the difference lol!

Sorry man you just have to be patient...either try out a custom Rom or wait. It will come i'm sure if the VM has it out of the box we will get it as well. Like HTC said June July timeframe..

Just got confirmation from an "inside" source that the OP is right. We will not be getting ICS update for the Sprint EVO 3D. Sprint, HTC, and others have lied. I would not believe anyone else. This source is as "reliable" as they come.

The last thread that stated this "ICS cancelled for 3D" rumor was permanently closed a few days ago, because most others have confirmed otherwise...hope you are not just trying to stir things up ahahaha

its pure pain xD
Leak Version from May...and now its june 18....HTC/SPRINT/others...put it in ota!!
The reason it was canceled is because the Ice Cream Sandwich melted while being transferred from HTC to Sprint. To salvage what it could, Sprint stuck it in a glass and mixed it up so now we are all getting an altered version called "Milkshake". You know, according to my source.
When they depelete enough stock of 3d they'll release it.. I'm sure well see a price drop soon on the 3d.
Who cares at this point.at least we have a leak. Hope has pretty much dwindled to nothing.
Even if we got it I, personally won't be in a rush to flash it like I was with the leak

They don't sell them anymore. U can't even get a refurb which is why I'm on this phone now. It was my replacement which I have to admit is much better. There is practically a new ics leak from Sprint/Samsung on a daily basis lol and I was rooted within 5 min. This thing also.looks amazing and is much much faster.

Sprint Discontinues EVO 3D?

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/21/sprint-discontinues-htc-evo-3d/
Well I just checked the Sprint website and they took it down. I don't know about you, but I'm quite angry. This phone as "going to be pretty good" and much better than my intercept. Yet it's only been a year and they discontinue it after Ice Cream Sandwich? Really Sprint? First you take long with the update and now this? I'm gonna call tomorrow and enquire about this.
Any thoughts?
Be happy you got an ics release before they discontinued it.

Well, our ICS was buggy-ish, and it was really delayed.
I had SOS-M working better.
It's on the EVO line and they just discontinue it?
Being that they moved it to virgin mobile I don't think this is a big surprise.

Yea, and most carriers discontinue phones that are less than a year old. Be happy we got to almost a year.
I didn't know that :/
Oh well.
Thanks though guys.
Sad but true. Wish there would be more 3D phones

they discontinued it (and will do so for all their other wimax phones) because they still plan to kill out 4G WiMAX from their network, im not at all shocked this happened because i already knew it was coming, the E3D wasn't made for LTE and can't be through any software changes, now if there was a high demand for a 3D phone i wouldn't be surprised if a more amped up LTE variant came out. as i said they don't have long term plans for WiMAX anymore, and want to keep people new people and people with upgrades from buying a phone that has technology that will not be supported soon. but be happy we made it almost a year and by the time our phones "lifespan" is up (2 years good enough) we would have been given the chance to use whatever 4G we can x)
may be bugs on some of you mugs, but there aint no bugs on me
long live the evo 3d i love this phone what could possibly top this phone really we come along way working with this phone one of the toughest to crack ithink to get s-off am i right
---------- Post added at 04:03 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:59 AM ----------
i dont think anyone in the phone development made such a phone to where we had to put a bounty on it just to crack it we should be proud of our success and breakthrough i think everyone kept it around bc they thought it was unbreakable when we cracked it now they wanna get rid of it
