[Q] Media Scanner causing phone to continually reboot? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

A weird issue manifested on my phone today ... the phone started, upon boot up, to spontaneously reboot. It would boot up within 30s, at which point I unlock it an pulldown the notifications screen (to see what was going on).
I saw several instances of "media scanner running" occurring - over the course of various trials I would see the following messages alternate on the top status bar.
Media scanner running... (system storage)
Media scanner running... (SD card)
Media scanner running.... (USB storage)
Media scanning completed
...while below in the notification areas I'd see the "Media scanning", "Media scanning...USB storage" etc messages periodically appear.
The phone would first lockup, then reboot perhaps 3 out of every 4 startups. Several of those times the last message I saw prior to the lockup was Media scanner running.... (USB storage).
I pulled out the 32FB Sandisk SD card, then tried booting the phone several times, and this time no issue - booted up fine, no lockups nor auto-reboots. Note though that I've had the SD card installed for over a week, and the problem only cropped up today.
There were two SD card-related changes I'd made last night: 1) used ES File Explorer to cut/paste ~400MB of video from the onboard camera storage to the SD card and 2) copied 1.75GB of MP3 files to the SD card.
The MP3s I had copied to /media/music (direct from laptop to SD, using a microSD-to-USB adapter), while the videos (MP4s, created by GS2 camera app) were moved by ES File Explorer to /DCIM/Camera.
So at the moment my phone is working fine (4 clean boots), though sans SD card - any ideas why "media scanner" may be choking upon scanning the SD card? Should I move the SD content to a different directory, or just kill media scanner?

I've seen issues like that but usually with no name low quality SD cards, with them either bad or modified to register as larger.
I'd backup what you have on the card and format it using the phone. If it's still giving you issues try it on a computer and download a program to check the memory sectors to make sure there are no read write errors.
A good free one is ariolic diskscanner. Can't remember if it can scan SD cards though, though I'd be a little surprised if it couldn't.
You don't want to disable media scanner, not even sure if that's possible. Many things require it to be working.

thanks for the tip - I mounted the SD on my PC and backed everything up, then tried deleting the ~2GB Media directory ... no dice, still locked/booted on the first boot up. Going to next clear the other large diretory (DCIM) and see what happends, and then finally reformat the card entirely. Will report back...

so i wiped and formatted the card in the phone ... rebooted several times with the newly empty card, and so far the lock/boot issue hasn't recurred.
Copying all files save the media stuff onto the card, will repeat the test; and then finally will put the media back and see how things go; will report back.

Good deal. Hope that's the last time it gives you trouble.

This is so weird. I've had this problem as of yesterday.
I'm having the exact same issue... but with a Galaxy S 4G.
I tried re-flashing my phone but I realized it was the SD card causing the problem because the internal phone storage scans just fine.
I've tried 2 different SD cards (one Samsung, one Kingston) - backed up my files on my Mac and tried formatting both cards, putting the files back on the SD cards and booted the phone.
Same problem was happening.
The phone boots up fine without the SD card but I am at loss what to do considering most of the apps I use need the SD card to run.

Try formatting them using the phone.
Could be a corrupted file on your SD card. If after the format the phone works fine, put the files back on one at a time and see if that's what's messing it up.
Try also changing the format type. Seems androids like fat32 a little better.

so far so good ... went a day w/o any spontaneous reboots, thought I do want to do a few more startup trials, but fwiw, formatting the SD card (in the phone) seems to have done the trick.
I do realize now that when I first inserted the card in the phone, I just started using it, I didn't bother formatting it - doh!

I have this same issue -- when my MiscroSD card is in, and it goes to media scan, the phone just keeps resetting... SO annoying
question: how do I format the external SD ?

Same problem on Samsung Galaxy Ace
I'm experiencing the exactly same problem on my rooted Samsung Galaxy Ace (Gingerbread 2.3.6).
Reboots with SD card mounted and working fine with SD card unmounted.
I'm using Link2SD with a 2nd ext2 partition, and when SD card is unmounted, all Linked apps work perfectly fine.
I've tried removing and re-inserting SD card and also recreating mount scripts to no use.
What might be the possible causes of this problem???:crying:
Please help :fingers-crossed:

i use Samsung galaxy s2 with the latest firmware version from Samsung kies (ginger bread 2.3.5) , the problem occurred after installing external SD card and move bunch of apps to it,i tried removing the external sd card from my device, the device stoped rebooting, when i insert it again the device keeps rebooting over and over, the problem is obviosley is moving apps to SD card, i tried to delete the content of the file (andro secure) in SD crad this file includes the moved applications from phone memory to external sd, the problem also stoped
i wasn't having this issue in 2.3.3 therefore
its one of the three:
1- android 2.3.5 do not accept lots of apps in external sd
or 2- there is a problem in a specific app in external sd which make the phone rebooting over and over but i don't know which app is causing the issue because i have lots of apps installed !
or- a problem in the newest firmware 2.3.5 as i heard many ppl having troubles with it
to fix the problem i did factory reset and the rebooting stopped but im scared now to move apps to sd card that the rebooting problem occur again as it happend to me twice after doning factory reset and move them.
i need your help guys, it's annoying to not be able to move apps to sd so the problem don't occur

I will be honestly: I didn't read all BUT
1) U have rebootings after putting files on external sd.
2) after factory reset problem was passed
3) copying again - reboot again
-> right?
1) U thought about wrong (damaged) files you copy?
2) Or maybe files which normally used from an app and this app now isn't able to use it because u moved?
Thing about and check this, I'm sure one of it would be the fold.

it's not copying actully, it's downloading the apps from market and move them from internal storage to external sd therefore i don't think it's a damage files case because they are a market apps however i move only compatible apps which doesn't have (lower right icon) in app2sd, install latest version of app2sd to know what (lower right icon) mean
I'm having the exact same problem! It just randomly started last night, I was playing the game "Blood and Glory" exited the game and around 2 minutes later after checking Facebook it started doing the boot loop.
I'm running the Sprint Epic Touch 4g with Android 2.3.6
I recently put in a 32g SD card a little over a week ago cause it seems the 16g internal is partitioned to only around 2gigs for apps and I have around 130 apps.
I use App2SD pro to move all my apps.
I'm having the same problem, I bought SanDisk SD Card 16GB. when I install it and moved all supported Apps to the SD Card the problem occurred and my SGS2 keeps rebooting over & over during the whole day.
One of my friends made a factory restore & installed the previous OS 2.3.4 and the problem disappeared!!
The thing is what if don't want to root my device and install 2.3.4 what we should do.... shall we keep the SD card only for Camera Pictures & Movies???
any suggestions???
Hey guys,
I am using SGS2 as well. My phone keeps rebooting like more than 2 times a day. randomly. I convince myself not to blame gingerbread2.3.5, thus i tried uninstall my apps in batch (5-10apps each round) and see which batch of my apps cause the prob, if they are not those who cause rebooting issue, i install them back (in phone space not SD card) but so far i still couldn't found and just few mins ago it rebooted again. it happens after the upgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.5, after i downloaded a few apps and updated a few apps. I will finish with the un-installation and re-installation.

saw this thread. people were talking about the Dolphin HD which caused the reboot issue, did you have Dolphin browser app installed?
I am having the same issue, too
It started on my S2 after the latest firmware update. I can unmount the SD card and the phone boots OK. I read somewhere that my SD card may have issues, so I purchased another and moved all of my files. The problem reoccurs with the new SD card. I do not have Dolphin browser installed.
I had this issue. I reformatted my sd card and then moved some apps and data back. One week reboot free. 32gb sandisk

In my SGS2 it reboots sometimes in the market, i dont know what to do...
test your sd card for errors...!? thats where i'd start
same problem ... do not restart I had to remove the microSD .. : (.... How do we fix??
SG2 rebooting all the time also
My Sg2 is rebooting every 20 minutes or so.
Is formatting the the SD card a fix?
Mine used to reboot 3 to 5 times a day. Did a factory reset and formatted the internal SD card and set everything backup without Dolphin browser and it's been good for about a week now, no more reboots.
Whether that was because of the rumor that Dolphin browser caused it or from the reformat of the sd card I don't know. But I'm happy none the less.
Got the same problem. It started 2 days ago, and the only fix I've found was to remove apps from my SD card.
From what I've tested :
- Formatting the SD card and copying back all the files doesn't help.
- Removing the SD card or having an empty one works.
- Uninstalling the Dolphin browser didn't help.
- Doubt it's a specific app causing the issue (nothing weird on my S2)
- Removing X number of apps on the SD card seems to work. Now I'm not sure if I had to clear a specific number of apps or a number of MBs, but it works (for now).
Hopefully we'll see a fix soon.

Yours sounds like a problem with an app...
Everyone else should test their sd cards for errors or try fixing bad sectors...
Used to happen on my previous phones with crap sd cards... Once I bought a decent good quality one its never happened
about a month and a half ago I removed dolphin and my reboots stopped. They started up again and my card became corrupted. Decided to go no-card for a while. Was fine for a month. Decided to go for a good deal on a sandisk 16 and 2 days later after moving a bunch of apps on the reboots are back.
Points to a card issue. I've been though 3 cards on this phone now and am about to reset it to factory and bring it in for diagnostics.
Driving me nuts.

I got the same issue (2.3.5) and my SD Card is calss 4, the only way to avoid restart prob. Is to root and downgrade to 2.3.4
Waiting for any other feedback.
Any update Guys,,,,???
This problem is still occur in ICS leaks..
Without knowing this thread I have created similar thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21457609
Still, my thread is to gather data about how many user can reproduce this issue.
This issue is side effect starting from Samsung update 2.3.5..
The only way to avoid this issue is by downgrading to 2.3.4 or lower version.

[Q] Newly rooted--sd card issues

Awesome newb video by the way! Made me laugh...
Just rooted and I like it, I don't wanna go back, but I can't get the microsd to pick up...I'll give all the info I can--def newb to root/droid but my background is IT, so hopefully we can figure out how to fix it so I can keep the root and not go back to stock(if that would even repair the problem)
Got a pny 32G microSD, droid incredible 4g lte(Verizon) that I rooted using the unlock script and fakeCID and then loaded Vipers Venom LTE custom rom...somewhere in this process-I think right after unlocking-it quit accessing the sd card...I've looked around and read some things about this 'USB brick' thing, but I don't know if it's applicable to me...here's what it does now:
SD card is in phone, but under 'Storage' Total Space and Available show unavailable, and everything else is greyed. If I try and pull the card the phone gives me the 'sd card unexpectedly removed' error.
Windows XP has no issue reading/writing to this card with a card reader. I've formatted a few times fat32 with xp(which i hate doing)and put it back in the phone, with the phone off, booted, and nothing happens. Oddly, when it first happened, after installing the custom ROM, when I'd do this procedure the phone would see the card on boot, but stay forever on 'preparing sd card/checking for errors' and never complete.
Back on the phone side of things, booting into the 'recovery mode', where you flash and whatever, it can see the card, see it's contents, and I wrote some sort of log to the card(option in the menu), so it can access it...oddly, I could not load my Viper rom from the microsd card, it failed on the file, but put it under some folder on the phone and that's how i ended up flashing the ROM, which I was nervous about doing as everything I saw said put the rom on the external sd card...
If I plug the phone into the XP pc via usb cable, choose use as disk drive, no problem accessing phone data, but 'please insert disk' on the card. Cannot push data when in usb debug mode via adb commands either. Oddly, dunno if this is related, it gives me 2 drives and also a CD ROM drive--tried dialing that##7 number for the option to disable cd rom, but it was already disabled. Dunno if this is related, but throwing it in there.
Tried chkdsk on the sd card with Xp, no errors, no problems. Hell, the card's not two weeks old and I've only had the phone a little over a month. I've done a bit of research the past couple of days and the only thing I haven't tried is the very confusing procedure i've seen for some of these 'usb brick' problems, but is that my problem. I'm hoping if all else fails i can go back to stock, just downloaded the stock rom, but will that even fix it? Gots to have my trailer park boys on my sd card to watch! Thanks for the help guys and gals! Sorry for the long post, but I like to give info--if kernel version or any other data like that is required, I can post it.

i tried to slim down your quote, but from my experience i'd still say the sd-card is somehow busted! i had a similar prob with the SD card in my Dinc4G two weeks ago. i _was_ r/w quite fine even from custom rom and at one point, the card just quit. removing and reinserting just ended in "preparing sd-card" and directly after that "safe for removal" ... wasn't able to access it any more within Viper, recovery (TWRP for me) was still seeing the card fine just like on your end.
putting the SD-card into a Win-laptop it _appeared_ fine and came error-free with scandisk etc ... BUT when i tried to backup all data from it before formatting (had like 10G on my 16G card) there were a couple of files that failed to read and i could NOT recover at all anymore. I formatted the SD-card again after that (full format, not fast/quick!) ... and put most of the files back. it is working again now in my Dinc4G but the card sure has some defect sectors (and usually _tends to die soon_ after such errors appear first!
i'd heavily recommend that you try to source some other micro-sd card first and try if you custom rom can read from it again. if that works fine and you see your SD-card from within the settings menu in the rom. you can be pretty sure that it's really the card.
PS: even brand new mem cards tend to fail at times :cyclops: ... just try to erase all private data on it (means: _fully overwrite_ with other stuff until the card is completelly filled) ... and then try to get a replacement from where you got your (fairly new) SD card from.
hope that helps a bit
i agree with the above post... try a different card. if formatting it doesn't fix it, it's time to try a new card.

[Q] Weirdest SD Card Problem - Refuses to mount until inserted into PC

Hi,
I have Galaxy S3 running CM10.1 Siyah Kernel (problem has occured over several months of various CM10.1 nightlies) and I just cannot figure out why the following is happening. Please read the thread carefully because I've ensured that every sentence contains details which should be important clues to the root of the problem.
Sometimes following reboot, the phone completely refuses to read my memory card. In this state, the phone does not give me the Unmount option, but when I remove the memory card directly then it does show the 'Removed SD card in the' notification. Now if I insert it again, it shows 'Preparing SD card' in the notification and this notification doesnt go away by itself (which it should if the mount is successful) and the card does not mount. This situation does not change no matter how many times I repeat the process. After several attempts, I get the ongoing 'Damaged SD Card' notification. Dozens of reboots dont help either.
After loads of trial-and-error's, I have concluded that almost everytime that this issue has occurred was when the memory card was in-use (playing songs etc. Accessing anything off the memory card basically), although on rare occasions it has also occurred when no apps were in use at all. This gets me to believe that the software is failing to properly release some kind of lock on the memory card before rebooting.
Now the only way to get the memory card working again on the cellphone is to put it in my laptop memory card reader, and it can instantly read the memory card. Now if I safely remove the memory card from my laptop and insert it in the S3, then it always mounts on the first go. Now it will work perfectly again, until some completely random time (usually at least 1 week away) when it will start its problem again.
Also note that whenever this problem occurs, Developer Options does not load and crashes.
I want to reiterate that this is not repeatable each time. Even if the conditions are exactly the same (well, as far as I can see as an end user anyway), the problem will very likely just occur in just 1 out of the 50 attempts.
I have already got the memorycard+sim card slot replaced from samsung under warranty. I have also paid extra to buy the SanDisk memory card from SanDisk themselves based in the Czech Republic - so it is extremely unlikely that it is hardware fault.
Can anyone shed some light on this situation? Feel free to ask for any clarifications, I have tried to put as much information as possible.
Thanks
Make a nandroid, flash a stock rom and test again. Format the card using sd formatting tool first.
If that cures it then ask your kernel or rom chef for help.

[Q] Weird SD Card Issues

I've been having some strange things happening with my micro sd card lately. After flashing a CM9 glitch rom, I noticed that when I plug my phone into my pc with a usb cord, it shows two drives instead of just one. This has never happened to me before. I have also been having problems copying files from my pc to my phone and when I disconnect the cable the files are gone from the phone. I copied 2,000+ pics from my work pc to my phone and verified they copied correctly. When I got home all of the pics were gone as well as some ROMS I had just downloaded. I formatted my card with windows xp and then I did a 1 pass secure erase with CCleaner. When that was done, I erased the card from the phone itself. After the card was erased, my Titanium Backup folder was still there with all of my backups. Anyone else experienced these issues?
My card is a Samsung 16GB Class 4 HC and is a few years old
I know regular eraser programs like ccleaner, etc don't work properly on sd cards, (they only kind of move files around so they are not seen) look up sdformatter v4 and use that.
What ROM are you on right now

I tried taking a picture a minute ago and it said please insert an sd card to take a photo. The sd card was still in the phone. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe the phone isn't unmounting the card from the pc aproperly. I had my sd card open on the pc and could see all of my files and when I hit turn off usb storage I didn't see any other messages in the status bar and the files were not there
@Sippi4x4man
I know it sucks but you might need to try saving everything off the sd card again, formatting with sdformatter from your pc,, while still blank install, reboot, wait for ROM to settle in, take picture. Then if all goes well, connect up to the pc (i assume you use mass storage) then put files back on, disconnect from pc,,, reboot and wait the 20+ minutes for 2000+ pics to be scanned by the media scanner process. Hopefully that works
It is formatting now. We will see how it goes. Thanks!
Update: I ran sdformatter and did the overwrite and then format. When I turned usb storage off the ROM said my sd card was damaged. I used odin to go back to stock 2.3.6 and when I was done it was still saying sdcard damaged. I formatted the card from the phone itself and then flashed AOKP Milestone 5 Glitch and all seems to be working just fine. Thank you for your help.

SD Card Unmounts until Reboot, data changes

So i have been having this problem for a few months now, and its driving me crazy.. I've read every thread on XDA about sdcards, but nothing seems to apply here
When I reboot, my phone launches External2Internal so my 32GB SD can be used as my internal drive, and I've used it fine for a very long time.. but recently the sd card just disappears after some period of time. it seems to happen whenever my phone goes to sleep or the screen goes off and is locked, i suppose
after I reboot the phone it works fine again..
I quite think its from a malicious program.. but I cant be sure
recently, I installed a bunch of sd card tools to rescan, remount, test etc.. and I also installed an External2Internal update... and after all that, the sdcard contents appear to have been deleted, even after multiple reboots, when viewed with ES File Explorer.. However all the contents appear in good condition when viewed with Total Commander.. .
and since all that tinkering, because the sd card seems on some level to be deleted, programs like avast are getting corrupted errors on their virus scans, such as "invalid context during scan".. an error it doesnt get when the sdcard is unmounted completely, but only now that it mounts as appearing mostly empty to es file explorer and probably most other programs.
so it seems like one of the USB tools or the External2Internal update has done something malicious to my card... or maybe it was a last ditch effort by some dorks malicious code from a program i deleted in trying to get this all sorted out
anyone else having this problem or know how it can be fixed?
and I prefer to try and find out what is causing the problem and fix that problem, rather than just reformatting the card or buying a new card, since i'm sure it will just happen again someday
thanks
-
This happens to me as well, the only difference is that I don't use External2Internal but the jellybean option "default write disk: SD card"
