sprint confirm's the 2.08 update was borked, and why they can't fix it right now - HTC EVO 3D

So about a month ago I got a replacement 3d (and of course it came already updated to hboot 1.5) and after a few days of owning it the random reboots began. I flashed infectedrom and tiamat's kernel which seemed to help a bit, and it was to the point that I could tolerate it. Last night, while I was sleeping and it was on the charge, it apparently rebooted itself, and froze on the boot animation, causing my alarm to not go off, which prompted me to decide it was time to replace it. I called sprint, lo and behold the lady I talked to told me that the 2.08 update was causing the random reboots and to take to a local repair shop. I took it there, only for them to tell me that I was SOL and needed to wait for an update because they could not roll back to pre 2.08 (due to htc's hboot 1.5 fiasco) and they said that they would not replace it for me.

Great. I just got one as a replacement.

OK. So.... The reason my phone won't stop rebooting is because its 2.08?
Why is it not rebooting for others than if its a software issue? How do you downgrade it if you are on 1.40? Isn't that the version number the rom is built on? I'd love to have a full day without a reboot.

Been fine for me. It's probably an hboot 1.50 issue.
Via My HTC Evo 3D On The Now Network From Sprint.

normally if an update caused an issue with the device, the repair centers would normally just roll it back to the previous update (granted it wasn't borked either, as they did with the optimus) but since htc made it practically impossible to downgrade from hboot 1.5 or flash anything prior to it, they cannot downgrade to the previous software version.

I remember posting long ago (prior to HTC's unlock) that it wouldnt be a real unlock and that it would prevent real unlocks and cause nothing but problems. People called me a troll and crazy... hmmm.....

I simply cannot imagine a specific software version being the cause of this. I've owned 3 3ds, one of which had the reboot issue, and that was before the ota that brought hboot 1.5

Same here really. I and 2 friends got our EVO 3Ds at the same time from the same shop on the same business contract. Their's work perfect and mine has been nothing but problems. I have managed to get mine mostly fixed though with custom ROMs and kernels.

Its not specific to H1.50 because I'm running 1.40

Hmmm. Maybe faulty hardware? Mine has been fine.

That is the newest. I haven't had any problems running any of my own ROMs based on whatever the current update is or any HBOOT versions. It's certainly not something that affects 100% of the phones.

I've been having reboots as well, I thought it was the kernel I was using but I've tried all of them... I'm on 1.40 with 2.08.651.2... Idk...

Sounds like they just didn't want to give you another replacement...

My replacement phone has.2 on the end of the software number. I have the update downloaded but not installed yet. Does it matter at this point?

I just had sprint order me another 3d yesterday......My issue though isnt reboot related...just really bad phone service. I had a issue about a month ago with a bad sd card that shut down the phone and made it unusable.
I replaced the sd card and ever since my phone service has been horrible...Im not sure how or what the sd card did to my phone but something inside seems to have been affected.
I took the phone to sprint yesterday and left it with them for a hour after which they tell me that they did a "hard reset" and such and that now the phone is fine and good to go....UMMM no its not!!!! I walked right over to the 3d floor model they had and held my phone next to it with the rep next to me....on my phone - no bars and a roaming triangle(in the sprint store im roaming..wow). On the floor model phone - full 4g full bars. At that point i politely asked to order me a new phone...done deal..should be here in a few days.

That sucks man. I got an evo 3d cause I broke my og evo and it came with hboot 1.4!

[Q] Very Mysterious! Completely Stock EVO 3D Won't Boot!

My wife's EVO 3D, completely stock, S-ON, never installed the OTA update.
The phone was on and she had it in her pocket and felt it vibrate, when she looked at the phone, it was booting up but it appeared to be stuck in a boot loop. She said she saw it rebooting itself (just the initial sprint splash screen) several times before she pulled the battery.
She re-installed the battery, but the phone wouldn't turn on. So she left it alone and brought it home.
The reboot loop was a bit concerning to me, but the phone not turning on sounds like a drained battery. So, I put it on the charger (AC power adapter) for about an hour (orange led is lit).
When I turn it on, I see the boot screen (HTC -> Sprint -> 3D -> Sprint) and then the screen goes black. The soft key LEDs are stuck on the entire time. but nothing happens. I let it sit like that for 10 minutes and it never boots. I've tried several times with the same result.
I can get into hboot (Volume-down + Power)... Almost feels like a corrupt stock ROM?? I can check the CRC, but I don't know the correct values... And no one has tried to root or flash it. I asked if she might have accidentally started the OTA update, but she says not likely...
I've searched the forums here and various others, and it seems all not-booting and endless-boot-loop issues are all due to people trying to root or flash an image.
So.... I don't have a whole lot of experience with Android... What's the next step before attempting a factory reset or bringing it back to Sprint?
Thanks!
EDIT: Typos
Wow, this is very weird. My advice is if you still have 30 day return use it or insurance, bring it to sprint. If not both call HTC and complain but I doubt they cover software issues, idk I might be wrong. Why fix it? Get a brand new one, you paid for it to be working, not broken.

You said you can do a factory reset? I'd say do that first before trying anything else. If it works, then the only thing she has to worry about is taking 30 minutes of her time to re-set up her phone.

Try removing the SD card and see if it will boot up properly. I had that happen to me once (boot loop and all). Phone would boot fine without the SD card.
I ended up having to format the SD card (connected to my PC with a card reader). That solved the problem.
This happened to my phone once. A factory reset from the bootloader fixes it good as new. It's been like a month and a half since then and I have had no problems since then.

Noooo, he can root and solve the problem that way. Just visit Haus's stock ROM thread, and he'll have everything there for you. A stock rooted ROM with all the OTA firmware fixes available for download. Just root first.
This is assuming you live in the U.S, and own the Sprint Evo 3D (CDMA).

*14 days if bought on the 16th.
Try these things:
- Take batter off and hold power button down for like 10 secs, put battery back in.
- Download the RUU from a thread in the development section and flash it (it will replace everything back to stock).
That SHOULD fix it, if its a software issue, if it doesn't, or it still continues to act funky, just take it back to Sprint and demand a new one since you're within your 14/30 days.
Make sprint replace it the phone will be doing the so thing after resting it or trying any other trick its a software issue belive me I had 5 replacements because of software issues

Sprint Tech updated my phone to hboot 1.5 after I insisted he didn't

God I just need to vent......
My ear phone speaker was blown so I cleared everything, reverted to stock with hboot 1.4 and s-on and took it to the store and asked them to fix the ear piece for me.
While he was entering data he asked if everything else was ok with the phone. I said ya it was pretty sweet, then slipped and told him it sometimes it was kinda buggy and froze some but no worries really.
He looks at me and says oh I'll take a look at it for you. Of course noticing there was an update he told me about it. I told him I'm not one for updates... if it isn't broke don't fix it right?
He looks at me and says "I see, well we will see if this solves your problem and updates to 2.08"

Now I have a phone with a new ear speaker and hboot 1.5
Cheers.
tl;dr sprint tech updated my phone to 2.08 after I told him not too

Download the PG86IMG RUU you will find in the development section
put it on sdcard
boot into bootloader
flash update
type 'oem writesecureflag 3' into a terminal to give s-on
just leave it stock unrooted with s-off.
then they can update all they want and you have a way back.
hell just flash the latest hboot so they have nothing to blame it on.

This is so absolutely true. It makes me physically cringe when I see people clamoring to unroot their phones because they have to make a visit to Sprint.
They.Just.Don't.Care.
EVERY time I've gone in, I've gone in Rooted, and EVERY time, i've not only gotten exactly the same service I should expect, but usually, end up getting into a conversation with a rep about some new feature that Ive gotten, usually ending up providing dropbox links for apks, advice, etc.
<<bringing it since 2010>>
I am not sure if this will work every time, but when I was in, I left the SD Card in my pocket. When they returned it they mentioned that they were going to update for me but since there wasn't a card in it they couldn't. I have to take out back in. I think it needs to be replaced so hopefully I can get lucky again.
Sent from the Delta Quadrant using XDA Premium App
Yeah, if it's hardware related, what does rooting have to do with that? lol
I have never walked into a Sprint Store in my life with reverted phone software. They take it like it is or I raise hell.
Most, if not all software issues can be resolved by simple trial and error, searching the forums, or a bit of know-how.
Hardware issues are the ONLY reason why one from XDA should ever visit a Sprint Store for phone assistance.
In a case like this, it might be a good idea to temproot and remove the security certs...the phone will download the update, but the actual installation will fail
When I bought my 3d launch day, I told the rep not to even open the box, that I would set it up and if I had problems come back.
With my OG evo I had the speaker replaced twice, both times, fully rooted with cyanogenmod. Told him I tried on stock rom and speaker was still distorted. Both times, replaced with no problem.
As mentioned before, they don't care so long as they have common sense. If it is an obvious hardware issue don't sweat it.
<-- Sprint Lead Tech
Ok I'm a lead tech at an S&R location in TX. I root every phone I get and encourage my customers to do the same (if they seem capable). While Sprint discourages rooting phones, they eliminated the prior rule about not working on rooted devices a while ago. The only thing techs won't be able to assess is software, unless they're like me and love seeing rooted devices. That being said, any and all hardware issues are to be fixed as stated by Sprint Service and Repair policy. Best thing is to just be honest and let the tech know what's going on and why you don't want anything updated. I'll keep working on pushing phone unlocking from the inside, you guys keep making progress in development.
Let me know if you guys need anything.

Experience with Sprint repairs and S-OFF

Unfortunately my friends EVO 3D's digitizer is going insane and randomly selecting things on the screen. He needs to take it in but I'm not sure how Sprint will handle it with it being S-OFF and all. I can return it to a unrooted ROM but I wouldn't want to mess with the HBOOT etc if I didn't have to.
Has anybody taken their EVO 3D in with S-OFF and got repairs done on it?
They will work on phones with s-off as long as you are on a stock rom. Actually, most of the time the techs wont even check to see if you are s-off, but just at least return to the latest stock rom
I work at a preferred service and repair store and we haven't even received parts for the 3d yet. We have been told soon. I'd assume that they will ae (advanced exchange) it for you. Just to be sure I'd unroot. But many have said they send phones back all the time rooted.
My wife just had the screen replaced on her Evo4G, which was rooted, had one of Miks roms installed, and the splash screen was changed. They didn't say anything.

I am downloading the 2.17 stock RUU now. I can run the RUU and extract the zip out. In there remove at least the hboot and recovery... will that work. Do they work on phones with custom recoveries as well?
I extracted the ROM.zip out of the 2.17 RUU. Then I extracted everything out of the ROM.zip and removed hboot 1.5. Repackaged it back into a zip. So this should be good to go on flashing from the bootloader? The phone currently has a 2.08 rooted ROM on it.
I have had phones replaced with s-off and got a 150$ trade in with my og EVO. All were stock roms. I always keep a stock ROM on my SD card just in case I have to pop into a store and have them look at something
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I took mine in rooted with stock rom. They replaced the screen no questions asked. However, it was alerting for an update which I knew would update the hboot. They gave it back saying they were sorry that they didn't update it for me since I didn't leave the sd card in it. So, if is signaling to be updated, don't give it to them with the card in it.
Don't worry about the phone being rooted when you take it in. That shouldn't matter. Just flash clean ROM or something similar. Just a stock rooted ROM and you'll be fine. They won't even know the difference all they are doing is replacing hardware.
And ditto on the SD card. Leave that out so they can't download any updates. I would probably even be straight forward with them and tell them you don't want them to update anything because you need the HBOOT unlocked in order to do dev work for qualcom. When they ask what you are doing just say your contract does not allow you to discuss details. They won't bother you about it.
We never even go into recovery, my store manager and repair tech had no idea what s-off was until I started...
Awesome. Thanks for all the replies everybody.
I downloaded the 2.17 RUU and extracted the rom.zip out of it. Then removed the hboot 1.5 and repacked the zip and flashed. Got it flashed back to stock 2.17 and he is going to take it into sprint tomorrow.
Anybody know what Sprints policy is on water damage stickers? My phone had got some water on it awhile back and the water stickers are red. The phone works fine and everything, I just hope I don't have this digitizer issue and need it repaired. I've got TEP but would sprint work on it if the water sticker is red?

It depends on the store. If the water stickers are red then they can reject it. Most techs will look for signs of water damage on the board. If they find water damage on the board most will send you to the insurance company. Just give a shot and see what happens.

Yes, if you run the 2.17 RUU it will update your bootloader. If you are already S-OFF from revolutionary you will be fine though. You can downgrade back from 1.5 to 1.4. If you want to keep hboot 1.4 and return to a stock non-rooted ROM, you'll need to extract the rom.zip out of the RUU and remove HBOOT. Or i guess I could upload what I made if you want it.
Unfortunately, if the water indicators went off, they will likely not work on it at all. That's the FIRST thing every tech will look at. And it doesn't matter if you say it only got a little wet, they wont believe you.
Well my friend took his EVO 3D out to sprint and they replaced the whole LCD/digitizer. Luckily someone had returned a pretty much brand new EVO 3D. So the tech just swapped it out.

if you are s-off(unlikely) then ya you can downgrade. but if you are s-on even if it was s-off from the last person and you are 1.5 there is no way to get it back. htc more than likely put it back to s-on before handing it your way. oh and you can still unlock the bootloader and gain root. but you have to unlock through htc.

You can't downgrade unless you have s-off, and you can't get s-ff with a 1.50 hboot.
All depends on the Sprint store. My last visit to a Sprint store the reps told me I had too many apps on my phone and most of them were bad. And I had a rooted phone because I had a Sense skin and Widget Locker running.

[Q] 1.4 HBOOT S-OFF cannot use revolutionary...

So. I flashed that horrid firmaware by freeza thats destroyed my devices ability to call out, text... all i can do is data, broken record right?
Whats worse is my other phones a samsung, the droid charge. I thought i was alright at first after flashing the VM firmware, but then i suddenly started receiving Error Code: 97 Class: 2 on outgoing SMS, this happens after the failed SMS send so much i couldnt look the fix up on my evo so i saw on my computer that i could call sprint and have them refresh me on their network. I also saw i could work a PRI fix.
Heres a little history before the isse: i was at 1.4 HBOOT S-OFF after following the live CD S-OFF 1.5 to 1.4 revolutionary method.
After i realized my SMS and CALL was borked i tried flashing the PG86IMG (the one you pull the power cord out the moment it begins to flash boot) to get to 1.5 HBOOT stock which is what that is by what i can tell. Unfortunatly this does nothing but put me at a 1.5 bootloader and no root.
I see that the PRI downgrade method requires root so i need to get S-ON now on 1.5 which is what i am now on
UPDATE: I fastbooted a command to S-ON and i did the brick downgrade method again and its currently flashing the 1.13 RUU. Im attempting to get recovery and then flash one of the rooted roms i have and try the PRI downgrade from there.... not quite certain why i couldnt work revolutionary earlier, im pretty sure i was 1.13 and also 1.4 HBOOT w/ S-OFF... i might never care to know why if this works. I bought this phone off ebay for 150$+rush shipping and a dock and two chichitech 1900s w/ batt charger and it rounded out to about 250$ all in all. Thats a waaaay better deal than the triumph on V-mo. Oh and the phone has a clean ESN and its mint... insane deal there, i got it put on a sprint employee plan and play 30$ a month plus tax. no 4G where i live but everyone thats not living in a shack outside a tower has the same experience so im not crying
failure...
okay so it utterly failed. not really not sure what to do i just want to get my calling and texting working again this is lame... ive rooted 4 phones now and they all happily work fine nothing like this ever happened and this is the best phone i ever had
What failed, I assume you got 1.13 loaded fine and then tried to revolutionary? If it failed to revolutionary what happened? Did you run it multiple times?
yeah i ended up switching the S-OFF to S-ON somehow on 1.4 HBOOT then i ran revolutionary straight off my laptop, there was some issue on my desktop which is vastly better in all areas but somehow got a driver issue i couldnt resolve. i havnt slept yet but im on mean 4.3 fresh now. I just used the beta key straight in rEvo not on the live disc and it worked. my laptop seems better at modding phones lol this is its 3rd of my four ive had that it just has no issues with whatsoever its a cruddy d630 too!
anyway i still have to downgrade the PRI thanks to the bloody VMfirmware i flashed before we all knew the horrors it would cause... sleep now, work on that tomorrow

Problems after updating my HTC Evo 3D

I hate to just come here and ask for help, but I haven't found any solution over the past two weeks, and I didn't see any similar threads in this forum.
I have an HTC Evo 3D through Sprint. Two and a half weeks ago I downloaded the update. The update appears to have worked in the sense that the layout and many features are tweaked a little. However, since I updated it, whenever I turn it on it turns itself off and then back on every few minutes. The reason for this is that I am in Australia so it can't connect to the network to complete the update. I have been here for nearly two months, and won't be back in the US until mid-November. I have solely been using my phone with WiFi for email, internet, etc, and I would like to be able to use it for this purpose again. I called Sprint but they weren't able to help me because there is no Sprint service or Sprint stores in Australia.
Does anyone know of a way to fix the phone? If I factory reset it, will it come back without this issue, or will I just have a phone that doesn't work and lost its memory? Would there be a way to fix it by rooting it?
All help is appreciated. I'm not very knowledgeable on this kind of stuff, I apologize.
Thank you, have a great day.
Even in Airplane mode it does this?
Can't you install the latest sprint ics ruu? That should sort it. I'm gsm though so I never browse the cdma section but I think that should solve your issue.
Best of luck getting it working

I have had it in airplane mode the entire time for the last 8 weeks.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what this all means. Are you suggesting that I root the phone using the newest Android version (ICS=Ice Cream Sandwich)? I have no clue how I would do this, or if it would actually solve my problem.

Here's a post with download links and some information about running the Sprint ICS 2.89 RUU. You didn't say if you are S-ON unlocked or S-OFF and the procedure is slightly different between those two states. If you have never HTC unlocked your phone and rooted your can just run the RUU.exe as if you were S-OFF.

I wonder if there is any way you can get an active Airave to connect to? Sprint obviously wouldn't issue you one in Aus, but perhaps you could have a friend or family get one, activate it, then send it to you in Aus.
Wait....are you saying as long as I have an Airave, I can get service all over the world?

Well, not sure. It does require GPS signal, so it may detect anything not in the US and refuse to work. It was just a thought. Anyone else try to use an Airave outside the US?
It sounds like you aren't rooted and haven't done anything outside of the normal update for the phone.
When you say that the it turns off and back on, do you mean that the phone is simply rebooting randomly? If so, then I think a custom rom might help you.
I don't think the factory reset will fix this for you btw. I also wouldn't try it unless I got a really good backup (which is pretty easy once rooted).
Thanks everyone for your help. I ended up doing an RUU flash using the info ramjet73 gave, and it appears to be working fine except that I lost all of my memory. I couldn't get it backed up before I did it, but I'd rather have a working phone without my old contacts and stuff than have it not work.
Log on to your google account and download them again.
Glad it's working. Be safe out there! Or try to be.
