[Q] Coming from a captivate - which ROM is stable/gets the best battery? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My sisters blackberry is crapping out, so i picked her up a fascinate for 70 bucks off of craigslist.
I myself have been using a captivate for the past year and a half, so i know the process of flashing cant be all that different.
My main question is which rom i should put on there. I want something very stable, and something that gets great battery life.
I can say from experience that with my captivate, when i used roms that were ported from other phones (I9000 and CM based roms), the performance was good, but the battery was awful, and i usually ended up with bugs. (for example, im running pinnacle (KH3) right now and my battery life is awesome. I go from 7am to 3pm with some usage and im only down to like 70 percent.)
So what im looking for is a custom GB ROM that gets awesome battery life, and something that she wont come to me and complain about in a few weeks because of some bug. If theres only a froyo rom available that offers what im looking for, then thats fine as well (although not preferred).

tsm pool party with glitch kernel 12 in development forum or 13 from the glitch app provides really good battery. Im currently on vanilla gb v8.1 from rootzwiki with glitch kernel rc13. seems good so far.

All mtd based roms provide decent battery life...although I got the best battery life with powerwashed froyo w/ imnuts 0808 pbj kernel. I would get a steady 36hrs battery life...with mtd roms I get 16-24hrs, which is plenty imo and the performance is second to none. as dawman said vgb8 is solid, I just don't like the fact the rom has no widgets in the pull down menu. tsm pool party is sweet w/ the live weather app...but for some reason I end up back on cm7. cant really say why, they all are good roms. have not tried miui yet...

Whats considered really good? Coming from the captiate forums, people talked about cm7 having good battery, and i just didnt see it. My phone would drain very quickly even when in standby.
Releases intended for captivate, vs I9000 and cm based roms werent even close. I probably would get more than double the battery life with a captivate rom over a cm rom.
This is why im scared to use a rom that isnt intended for fascinate. If it really comes down to it, i think i would rather just use a really good 2.2 rom. On this device, i really dont see much of a difference.

whats mtd stand for? and is powerwashed based off of an actual fascinate rom? I may end up using 2.2, simply because i personally wont be using the phone, so i need to to be stable and have great battery life.
whats the difference between running cm7.1, and the nightlies?

What Froyo Rom are you guys running!!??

I can't decide what rom to run! i want something with decent battery life and good performance. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Four Days. I think you should plan on spending 4 days trying out the various ROMs until *you* find one that *you* like; with you spending a day on each one. They come with their own set of strengths.
My personal experience with Onyx and Axura is that they both had good battery life. I've also tried Obsidian, but thought that the battery life with Onyx was better.
But, ultimately, the battery life will depend on what apps & widgets you use and how you use your phone.
Good luck.
Thanks, I'm currently trying one of them out. A relatively new one but I like their setup. Will definitely see how battery life is and go from there
Been running macnutr12 with the latest bstock kernel1120_100 and jfs overkill lagfix enabled...smooth sailing.

If you want GPS to work, stay away from any i9000 based ROM such as the MacNut series. Any ROM based on JK2 (such as AOSP-ish or Axura) though should come with at least typical GPS functionality. The ROM's description will typically say what it is based upon.
I've tried different ROMs and so far each ROM has its lack on something. I ended up doing the same thing I did with 2.1 which was built my own ROM (JK2 based) and stock kernel for a phenomenal battery life.
I'm in the same boat...i don't know what rom to use...i rooted it, have rom manager, one click lag fix, but confused on what rom to use and yet how to do it...youtube videos are ok but not that helpful. Someone give me a good thought. Guess I'm looking for a quick and responsive phone or rom rather.
Thank u in advance.

I personally like the frobuntu rom, my daily driver. Everything runs smooth.
I personally like the team whiskey froyo ROMS like Onyx and Obsidian...I'm running Onyx cuz TouchWiz has been completley removed...

Currently running this rom Re: [ROM] FroyoCollab V1.2.1 ULF_Kernel / Stock_Kernel | **11/27/10**
Its really smooth and battery so far is ok. Gps is great, slight overclock and running ULF lag fix. Does have TW but a real smooth version of it

I tried most of the major 2.2s, including Macnut, Axura, and Obsidian, and finally went back to the first one I tried: Eugene's Stock 2.2/Odin flashable. It gives me great performance and the battery life is awesome.
If I had to pick one of the highly modified 2.2 ROMs it would probably be Axura. I found Macnut and Obsidian basically unusable due to terrible battery life.

Best Froyo Rom

So with so many Froyo roms out and new ones that just seem to keep rolling in what is the best working froyo rom. I am looking for the one with the least amount of bugs and is fast. Looking for Rom and Kernel combos that people like.
I am currently running TW fusion with their core kernel and my phone runs dam near perfect in every way.
Any advise would be much appreciated.
UPDATE **
Going to try Axura (Masters Rom) and Nero (Team Whiskey) and report back the results.
UPDATE**
So been running Nero for several hours. Runs very smooth and real fast. I did use Eugene's new super kernel and seemed to speed it up even a little more. My only problems so far has been a could force closes on the messaging app and wifi calling runs in the back ground no matter what and eats up battery.
Axura 2.1 is a pretty bad ass rom
Sent from samsung vibrant running Macnut 14
I am running ASOPish and it is stable and more than enough for me. I haven't had many problems with this ROM since I have had on my phone, which has been about a month.
More info can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832532
The one thing that I will say is that the dev has seemingly moved on from this ROM, so other than other knowledgeable users, you MAY not get needed support if that is necessary. However, I can tell you that quite a few people reported using the ROM, then because of the lack of dedicated support, trying others, but ultimately coming back be it's ease and usability.
Hope this helps, and good luck. Whatever you decide to do, you're in the right place.
I like team whiskey roms, had great luck with them and am currently running 4.2 onyx stock kernel and jk6 modem combo. Good battery life, speed, and not any issues generally. I haven't tried axura, but didn't bother because I used a master rom for 2.1 and it seemed like he just modeled his roms right off of tw with no major coding changes besides themes...Eugene is a solid dev too, but I've read his i9000 based kernels don't offer the best battery life.

It's a shame, you should check out what Master has done with froyo. Take a look at Axura, it's quite an improvement over his 2.1 (MATE) ROM.
Have tried everything I could get my hands on and must say that Team Whiskey's Nero is by far the fastest and most attractive. Obviously just my opinion, but that's what you asked for
I have run both the stock kernel and ttabbal's dragon kernel with Nero. Both have their advantages. The stock is plenty fast and get's great battery life. The dragon kernel goes to plaid speed but is based off of i9k so it eats battery.
Team Whiskey's froyo roms are pretty good. Obsidian V5 beta is very stable..
Runnin nero+dow
I've tried them all and I have to say that out of all of 'em, AOSP 2.2 and Nero Beta 2 are the by far the most stable, reliable, clean, and have the best battery life (still testing battery life on Nero but so far goin on 10 hours with moderate/heavy use).

Edit: Now at 19h 7m 32s, with 2h 35m 27s cell phone use (calls) and 3h 02m screen on.
Team Whiskey's Roms have always been my favorite.
Axura. Gives you about 24+ hours of battery with normal use.
And quick and stable

Have to agree Nero is running amazing.
Nero is lovely... can't figure out why the SD is so buggy, cant write too and/or reads the wrong amount of free space. I tried the SD_Fix zip... someone PM me a solution if known.
I have tried many roms, and so far Nero 2 is my favorite. It is super fast, good looking and the gps works great. I have only been using it for a few days but so far I am impressed, the battery life seems to be very good.
Using Som's jk6 stock rom...perfect in every way.
(At least until newer roms are out of beta).

[Q]whats your favorite rom for the vibrant

im on trigger 3.0.0.1 and i want to switch i either want eugenes "gcr3" and axura
I just went from trigger to CM7 and definitely loving it. I waited until it was stable with good battery life. I highly recommend it

I'm loving Axura. I put the Erebos theme on top, and used the Bali kernel, and it's terrific. Seems speedy, no real lag (maybe a half-second to open Handcent). Everything's smooth. Battery is pretty great. I'm getting 30-ish hours per charge (light-ish use), give or take (I'm at 26% after 18 hrs right now, with 88% of that number display use and 4% cell standby, which I think is pretty good).
I'm running CM7 right now, and it's absolutely amazing.
Except for a little battery drain (will be more until you mess with settings to make it drain less), and the whole GPS thing on GB, it's great.
trigger, bionix, malice and bi-winning . fastest ill say malice and bi with bullet.

True, but I honestly find them useful in terms of frequency. The developers are doing such great work so consistently often I think it's great to read what people are using from day to day and week to week.
The most major problem I found with ROMs has been a lack of coverage of them. The threads are great to find out what's been updated when, but sometimes there's very little guidance in terms of how updates improve (or don't) usability.
Because, honestly, just up above, I noted my favorite ROM right now is Axura on a Vibrant, but two weeks ago it might have been Bionix or Trigger, and I'm fairly sure the latter two have been upgraded in that amount of time. Plus there's the new Heathen, and Simply Galaxy, and now that Android's up to 2.3.4 it's only a matter of time before that makes it to a Vibrant ROM, most likely.
In other words, instead of commenting on the nature of the thread, why not be useful and contribute? Some of us like to discuss what we're using at any given moment, and some of us flash new ROMs from week to week.
This same topic would have had entirely different comments just last week. The only really possible solution to avoid them would be to create a new sub-forum for each device that included threads reviewing each ROM.
And I, for one, would love such a feature.
I've been using Heathens Private stock 2.2.1. version and its a very good rom. It's beautiful and very smooth even without voodoo.
I like Simply Galaxy RC3.2.1 its a 2.3.3 rom and it's sleek and fast.
I also like it because the install instructions are easy. LOL.

whats better than bionix as of now?

what do you guys think is better than TW that i should try, miui?
Miui was pretty cool. Visually appealing but for me some apps didnt work and battery life sucked. I am using phiremod 2.0. It's a cm7 that in my opinion apart from bionix is the best rom I've tried I get great battery life and its really fast and reliable. I've been on it for about 3 months

If you want a good quality 2.2, check out Toxic8 or Deranged9. Both excellent ROMs with great support and outstanding battery life.
If you want the latest then ICS Passion is where it is at but make sure you are comfortable flashing ROMs, Odin and bootloaders. Oh and read, read, read.
I've been using ics passion 10.6 its great! no rom gives good battery life for me but this isn't any worse than stock 2.2 battery life
I am new to this stuff, but I flashed Zendroid a few days ago and love it. Super solid, no glitches at all yet. I have 25% battery right now after a full day's use and that never happened on stock. I love it, super clean, super smooth. I can't speak to "better" than bionix as I haven't tried that ROM yet. Just know that Zendroid is awesome.
I was on bionix 1.3.1 and was hesitant to try ics passion but the rom is smoother than I ever imagined.
Ok so I was looking at ics, and there's a ton where can get the best rom and kernels or is there a good site I can read about it?

Just look for the "ICS Passion v11" thread in the Development sub-forum. I recommend the stock kernel, only because it lags for me if I use Eugene's. Results may vary though, so you should try both and see which works best for you.

I think it really depends on the features that you're looking for. Personally, I don't really see the necessity to jump ship to a GB or ICS rom for the Vibrant just yet (if ever). Someone posted a pretty legit list on Fishman's mod noting the differences between Android versions that you should check out to see if updating is worth it for you.
+1 for bionix from me..
ICS Passion v11 is pretty sleek, but since there's no 1080p video recording I may have to revert back to Bionix.
The Vibrant is a better video recorder than my Flip- I'm not sure why they would cripple the video.
360 productions make some great miui roms. I prefer lithium. you could give those a try
I've been using bionix nextgen v2 for a long long time, and it's fantastic but I'd really like to make the jump to a GB rom.
Mainly because I can't stand the fact that my CM7 Nook Color can run apps that my Galaxy S class phone can't.
Only GB ROM I've tried so far was the first stable CM7 version, but no matter what I tried I couldn't get my GPS to work _at all_. Since I actually make use of my GPS on a fairly regular basis I went back to bionix nextgen.
Can anyone recommend GB or ICS roms that have good GPS performance (meaning they don't have that "turn off GPS once and you have to reboot to get it back" issue)? Been browsing through the roms listed in the dev forum, but I'd also like some extremely fresh personal feedback from other users here.
Thanks in advance all.

Would also like to know whether such ROM (GB with working GPS) exists...
Since my original post above I've switched to ICS Euphoria. It does have the GPS off = reboot to use it problem, but honestly leaving the GPS switched on all the time does not seem to have a serious impact on my battery life vs what I was getting before. In the end I'm fine making that tradeoff in order to be on modern firmware. ICS is _awesome_ and I don't see myself going back.

Help! Need opinions for rom on vibrant for my dad!

Hi, I've got a Vibrant on T-Mobile and recently got myself an SGS2 and am giving the Vibrant to my pops.
It's currently running neobuddy89's ICS Passion v13 w/ patch. (Thanks to him and everyone else who worked on it btw! awesome rom!)
Anyways, I was wanted to get some input on what a good rom would be for someone who has never had a smart phone before. I'm looking for something thats super stable and has awesome battery life while still being user friendly.
Any and all opinions are welcome.
Bionix 1.3.1 is super stable and has great battery life, but its a 2.2 rom
hmm i think i've tried that version of bionix before. if it's the one im thinking of, i liked it a lot. thanks for the input.
From experience it is easier to be running a rom you have used, or are using I keep my mom's vibrant on the same rom I am on just so I can help her if an issue arises, but if you are moving to a different phone pick on that is super stable
You make a very good point with that; It would likely be troublesome to potentially have to learn the ins and outs of two new roms.. have you tried any of the CM roms?
I used cm7 for quite a while, but gps sucks and I have run into random issues but I guess that happens on all roms. I suggest staying where you are and every once and a while updating the rom once an update comes out
yeah its battery life im really after and ics passion's isnt bad but its not the best i do remember that with bionix v, i went up to 2 days without charging with moderate use sometimes. lol
It depends if he reads off his phone at night honestly. If you use bionix or any 2.2 rom your eyes get blasted every screen touch by the capacitive buttons, not so on 2.2.1 roms. If he does read at night I recommend bi-winning with the sgs2 theme. Very polished and mature in my opinion. With Bali undervolt his battery life will be stellar.

CM is officially supported on the Vibrant again. Changes and link to latest nightly here:

I'm running build 229. Haven't tried GPS yet, but everything else seems to work.
Well, first, you could always flash back to stock. I'm pretty sure that's the most stable ROM, ha. Otherwise, I liked Bionix and CM. Both were very smooth and everything worked, as far as I can remember. You could also try Lithium Volt, but I haven't gotten to do much testing stability wise.
i would say bionix as they mentioned before on this thread. simply becuase it's been put up to the test by many and is known to be stable and has great batt life.
all the new roms are still being tested and still have bugs and well since it's for your dad i would assume he just needs something stable not anything flashy and wild.
+1 bionix with bail UV
