Create the folders (on internal SD) for custom sounds and place sound files in them:
Alarms for custom alarms
Notifications for custom notifications/SMS
Ringtones for custom ringtones

Just create the folder. media<audio<notifications

No custom ringtones??

Am I just not seeing some setting or screen?? Seems like custom/personal ringtones should be a basic option for a phone this advanced. All i'm seeing is a list of really cheesy ones and the option to set one to a contact.

I've been in Android world, just my Inspire had an option in music and sound to set a sound clip or song as a ringtone.

Put them in the folder Media > Audio > Notifications
Anything you put there will show up as an option when picking a ringtone.

And many let you get new ones for free. My favorite is zedge.
Also keep in mind there are programs you have to set up individually for from inside them, like google voice, plume, ect.

I've used zedge but I was hoping for just a stock way to do it. Like long press on an mp3 and select "set as ringtone"

Unfortunately no. It annoys me too that I have to put the files in the right folder for the phone to pick it up. Doesn't seem like it would be hard for android to have it as an option when you long press on a ringtone file.

Other phones have it, it's not an Android issue more of a Samsung issue.

I still use ringdroid, since I like to select specific parts of songs. Works great and puts the edited files in the correct folders.

put a folder on the root of the sd card or internal storage called notifications then put the sounds inside that. Presto they automatically show in the list.
No need to make a folder. There's already a folder in you're internal sd card called "notifications." Just put your sounds in there and it'll pop up in the list.

not true... you can customize both the ring tone and the message tone to any mp3 you want... no need for any app...

You need to create folders: "notifications" for custom notifications and "ringtones" for custom ringtones.
Folders can be placed in internal phone memory or on external card.
Next, place mp3 files inside the folders and from this moment on, sounds will be available in the notifications/ringtones list.
Hope that helps.

simple... in the music app, choose an mp3 that you want to set as your ringtone.. after choosing the mp3, tap the menu button and you will see a "set as" option... then you have the choice to use it as the phone ringtone... enjoy...

replacing notification sounds

Is there anyway I could get like the nexus S notifications to replace what Samsung has? These notifications suck and just wont do for me. I have searched around but all I see are roms with this feature. I just got the phone and I want to stick to stock for a few days so I know the ups and downs of touchwiz.
Thanks in advanced.
So this is not possible?

I was able to do this by making a folder in the sdcard directory labeled media with subfolders of ringtones, notifications, alarms and ui. Then my mp3 files I placed in the folders showed up in the selection list along with Samsung's options.
