[Q] Better CM7 Dialer? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know about all of you, but the default Blur dialer is roughly 10,000,000 times better than WyContacts that is packaged with CM7. I can't stand the piece of crap anymore. It doesn't allow you to tap a number and have it pull in the dialer so it can be modified, the contact integration is wonky, the favorites list is shoddy... basically I hate it if you can't tell.
Is there a way to either get the stock Dialer from Gingerbread (from the n1 or ns), the Blur dialer, or some other dialer that supports the same feature set as the default or Blur ones?
Help?

Thanks, I guess. I thought it would be inferred I have already been searching around and not found a good alternative, else I wouldn't have bothered posting

Use go dialler in combination with go contacts, I'm sure you'll like it.

Thanks, this one seems to be the closest one available. It's only missing the "Recommended" Favorites. However, where most of these dialers are only 60% of what I want, Go Dialer is more like 80% what I want. None of the other free ones on the Market are very good at all.

Go Dialer is indeed great! but the problem is that missed calls are generated and not cleared unless explicitly swiped or cleared with button.

Which dialer app is the best

I'm using cm7 now, I want to install some T9 Dialer app like Htc Dialer on it. Youlu is a good dialer, but I don't like it's SMS function. Are there any other quick response dialer apps for CM7?

Dialer One!
I thought dialer one was sluggish. Try ray dialer.

Thanks. I liked Ray dialer.
I personally am happy with the stock HTC dialler. Although, I've never really properly tried any other Diallers.
You mean you are using htc stock dialer on cm7 rom? I think htc dialer is the best, but couldn't install it on cm7.

Yes the stick dialler. Sorry my device is stupidly on 2.2 so its not rooted. Can't help there.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Stock HTC dialer is limited to copy paste and edit number in comparison to AOSP GB stock dialer, which is by far better!

DialerOne never worked for me. Too sluggish, as everyone has pointed out.
You could also try Dialer2 and TouchPal Smart Dialer. Both good alternatives. (TouchPal FC's on CM7, worked flawless on all previous ROMs tried. So if you not using CM7, you should be good)
EDIT: I am always on the lookout for good T9 dialers like the HTC Sense one. Just now I found, these two "Contapps", and "AContact- Smart Contact". Contapps feels heavy on resources but AContact looks refreshing. Very good concept. Try it out.
But I still miss the HTC call sceen with a bigger contact picture (FB synced) with FB/ twitter status message.
what about youlu? it looks quite neat. i've been using it for a few days, so far so good.
For me TouchPal dialer works just fine. It's great.

some dialers want to format numbers with dashes by force, touchpal is one of them. if your numbers aren't their form it's a quite boring situation.
edit: changing locale from usa to uk solves the dash problem. so, touchpal is a great dialer too
have you tried Go Contacts ?

back again to touchpal. it's faster than go and youlu. its vibration options are also nice. if you use minicm you don't need it, i think.

SMS App Suggestions

I used to use Handcent quite some time ago but found out that it was causing some problems with people receiving my messages and pictures. In addition, it started hanging and would generally slow down. Lastly I was told that it does not necessarily play nice with some other applications, namely LightFlow.
When I eventually put Eclipse on my DX2, I simply did not re-download Handcent and was just using the stock SMS until today, using CM7 and still, the stock SMS.
What does everyone else use, are there any decent alternatives to the stock SMS and if so, what makes it a better alternative?
All I've ever used is handcent, seems to be working nice for me, never used liteflow though.

I'm a huge fan of chompSMS. I've tried Handcent and GoSMS, but I always end up coming back to chomp. The only thing I wish they would add is the ability to multi-select message threads to delete, instead of having to do it one by one or deleting them all at once. I emailed them and suggested that and they responded that it was planned for an upcoming update, so maybe I'll get my wish.
I use GOsms. Works great for me.

I have used Metro Messaging Beta for a while. It was when I was going through my WP7 phase. lol. I actually liked it though. It didnt have any cool features (it was actually very limited) but with how simple it was, it was nice to use. I have recently just gone back to the stock sms app though. I also use SMS Popup so when I get a message, I dont even have to open the sms app.
I too, use GOsms. I like the customization and different themes it offers.
Just make sure to manually go into stock notifications and disable. Other wise you will get multi notifications at some point. It will ask you at setup to disable, but for some reason you will still have to manual disable through stock app.
You could always give it a go!

I like the customization of Handcent better, can change a lot of things for individual contacts in handcent.
I just delete the SMS/mms apk in every ROM and put handcent in system/app

Ciao!
GoSMS here BUT the MMS sending on it is whack. I have it set up for 1.2 MB and preserve image resolution yet when I send a pic it'll degrade the picture image. This is for pics under 1.2MBs...

GO SMS is what I use, I like how it pops up a window without you having to swipe notifications, and the overall customizability of it. As Elite49 said, you cant go over 1.2mb in size but it just let it shrink my photos to fit and it works just fine. Be sure to get all the plug in for it too, there are tons of themes and emotocons etc...

Does yours degrade the pics when their not over 1.2MB? I find it extremely annoying seeing a pic thats under that somehow look like crap when I go to send it.
Another vote for GO SMS here!

Dialers

So I do not like the stock dialer on my S2 and have been looking around. I narrowed it down to DW Dialer and exDialier. Are those the better ones or do you guys suggest anything else?

I was using DW, but most of the features I really wanted are in the ICS dialer in ICScrewD, so using that now. DW would be my fall back though. Wish the dev would drop the price for the pro version tho

I didn't feel that way with it installed on my phone. DW Contacts is awesome, especially it's fuzzy search in names/companies (you can choose what it should search)! Just today I needed to search for the guy who installed blinds in my home.. all I needed to type was 'blinds' and found that guy's number. I would miss this feature in stock dialer.
ExDialer is where it's at. It has a couple themes, and as good as stock dialer (functionality) and it's free
+1 for exdialer

Dialer/contacts app with swipe to call functionality?

Samsung dialers used to include a function where you could slide right over a contact to call and slide left to message them. They removed this a while ago and changed to the default android behavior, so I switched to using exdialer since it retained this. Just the other day, exdialer was updated and no longer does this in the contacts (still works in the recent call list) . I've looked around a bit for another app that has this functionality, but I can't seem to find one.
Anyone know of one out there?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
Any and every Samsung TW(touchwiz) based rom has this function. Shostock, Aberration, all TW roms. Cm9,AOSP and AOKP roms DO NOT have this feature. So you need to try a TW rom, I dual boot Shostock2 and Aberration, and both have this feature.
He's talking about alternative dialer apps if I'm not mistaken. I don't use any, so unfortunately i can't help.
exDialer in the Play store. It's free and has the swipe to call/SMS functionality you're looking for.

Nope, as the op mentioned, it was removed in the latest update (or at least doesn't work correctly on JB ). The toggle is still in the settings, and it works from the call history, but swiping left or right in contacts just changes pages.

It still works in exDialer. You have to click the button in preferences to allow swiping to dial from contacts. I've just tried it and confirmed it still works. However, I don't know how it worked before as I've never used it before today, so not sure if it's a new setting previously unavailable.
Also, I'm running Task's AOKP JB. Make sure you set a # as default, too, the first time you try it for each person.

Yep, I'm an idiot. There are actually TWO toggles to enable swipe a contact to dial. The one towards the top of the list is for the dialer only, and then there is another one lower in the list for contacts.
Thanks JankAU for pushing me to figure this out - it had been a moderate annoyance. Hope this also helps out the OP.

No worries, brother. We've got bigger issues, like keeping Task around, ya know? And to be honest, I thought you were right the first time because I was swiping from history. I had to figure it out as well, so it worked out for both of us!

[Q] Surrounding default phone app in AVATAR Rom

Hello there, I'm currently using [ROM][UNOFFICIAL BETA][CM10] Avatar ROM for Motorola Atrix MB860[Updated 17th Feb 13]
HTML:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2140902
and have been enjoying it. I installed GO contacts EX and Go Dialer EX but for the life of me I can't seem to figure out how to stop the Avatar Rom for using the default dialer when it sends or receives a call. I've gone through and looked at every option I can search through and there is nothing that allows me to uncheck / remove / ignore the default phone app.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. That was the first place I looked. Unfortunately I think the default dialer is hijacking Go Contacts/dialer EX. Go Contacts is set for the default already but the moment I dial out from it, the default dialer takes over on both outgoing and incoming calls. It's kind of annoying but I can simply get rid of Go Contacts and just live with the default. It will be a love/hate relationship It beats having the two programs competing all the time.

I've never tried it before, but root your device (if you haven't already), then go into system apps and delete the default dialer. this might work, but make sure you have your preferred dialer installed ahead of time. this is just an idea, idk if it works

It was a good idea but after I deleted dialer.apk (backed it up just in case), the system pasted a new dialer.apk in it's place (the original default one) once I launched exdialer lol. I have to admit, it is kind of comical how persistent that dialer.apk is Thanks again for the help. I think I'm stuck with it
