Nook tablet unboxing - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I posted a short unboxing video on you tube for those that are interested.

What's the power output on the charger? Is it the same as the NC's 5V, 1.9A?

And does it require a special USB cable with long microUSB connector?

Not sure about the out of the charger, but B&N said that the plug will be the same proprietary one used in the NC, not a standard micro USB.

NT's 12pin USB cable is unique?

NT uses a 12pin micro USB cable as NC, it seems a special standard, if we use standard 5pin micro USB, only connect to computer is OK, but seems have some trouble to charge, could we find any replacement one?

You'll need to purchase from B&N (unless somebody else can find another source). It is unique. If you look at it, the connector not only has 12 pins, but is longer. The extra length is what initiates contact for charging.
Although its slower to charge attached to the PC (500mA instead of 2A), it does charge. I left mine overnight and it was fully charged using a standard micro-usb cable.
My Samsung Galaxy Tab is like this. There is a software work around that makes it charge faster over USB (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323957). This gives hope that someday we get similar functionality.

I have heard it will only charge on PC via USB if the screen is off. Otherwise, it uses too much power to really charge it.
What would happen if I put the USB port into a power adapter? I use them to charge my phones when I don't have access to my laptop's USB ports.

Make sure it provides the correct amount of power first.

only the output will affect? if i found a charge head that provides 2A output will it work?

I tried using the official Nook cord with an Apple iPad (2 amp) usb charger. The NT never indicated that it was charging.
I tried using a quality micro USB cord with an iPad charger and with the official Nook charger, but it never indicated that it was charging.
I haven't tried a standard micro USB cord to a PC (yet).
So far, only official Nook cord and official Nook charger work for me. Alas.

using the nook cord here with my htc phone charger. all works well
None of my generic USB cords work.
USB Extension cables appear to work with charger
I tried a USB extension cable with the Nook charger and it does work. That means, I think, that the A end of the USB is standard.
I know nobody wants to sacrifice the Nook cable but I'm surprised no one has done this yet. I thought at least the Nook Color cable would be cross-compatible with the NT and someone would have buzzed out the Color cable by now.
There's the bi-color charge LED, but I can't see how they could put a charge chip in there; no room.
This cable is unique....and poorly constructed/misaligned to the 2 prong AC adapter. The USB does not fully insert into the AC Adapter. If not perfectly placed/propped while plugged in to charge, the NT does not charge or charges slowly.
My remedy has been to move the NT closer to the plug so that there is little to no bend in the cable leading to NT.
Will B&N send another if I request online/call? Or, must I unroot and go to a B&N?

Yeah, it's terrible. I don't have any charging issues, but the misalignment causes a ton of electricity to leak, so don't leave it on a couch or a fuzzy blanket unless you want (shockingly) pleasant surprises for hours. I wish they would make an all-in-one-piece as well (do they? would be a good add-on). Sheesh, poor design.
With the billions and billions of 3rd party cords out there, it seems amazing that none exist for the nook tablet. I don't really wanna pay 30 bucks for a backup charger.
2mA too much?
I noticed that the official Nook charger output is rated at 1.9mA - I've just bought a generic 2.0mA USB plug adapter and am hoping that it will work with the existing Nook USB cable. I'm hoping the extra 100mA won't fry the thing...
The extra pins in the Micro end of the Nook USB cable are used to support the higher power draw of the Nook when charging at full rate (2.0A) since the max rated current of a Micro-USB connector is only 1.8A. I am sure they also use the additional pins to make the cable proprietary and possibly also control the bi-color LED. The extra pins are set further into the connector so that they do not cause compatibility problems with standard Micro-USB cables.
In addition to this, the charger brick that comes with the Nook has its Data lines shorted, to each other I believe, to indicate to the Nook that it is plugged into an adapter and not a computer.
The combination of those two things is what is needed for the Nook to charge at its full charge rate. Since the USB A end of the cable is a standard 4-pin design, extension cables that offer all 4 pins/wires will work fine.
The Apple adapter (even the 2.0A version) will not work because it uses a voltage divider (couple of resistors) on the data lines to indicate to the iPod/iPhone what style charger it is (1.0A or 2.0A). One of the data lines is held at 2.1V and the other at 2.7V. Depending on which one (D+ or D-) is at what voltage determines what style charger it is. So the Nook does not recognize the "non-zero" voltage values on the data lines and assumes it is a PC, so it will only charge at 500mA.
Other vendors power bricks use the same "short the data lines" trick as the Nook adapter so several others will work. I believe as mentioned already in this post that HTC uses this same method.
WARNING
Be careful though because if the adapter is rated at less than 2.0A (e.g. 1.0A) you could cause damage or fire. I am not sure if the Nook will slow down charging if it detects the charge voltage dropping if it is trying to pull too much power out of an underrated supply.
If you really want to use your Apple IPad adapter with your Nook Color/Tablet cable you could modify a USB A/A extension cable to disconnect the Data lines and then tie together only the data lines on the side of the cable that will go to the Nook. Again, this can be dangerous, I can not take any responsibility if you attempt to do this.

AdamOutler has confirmed that it will charge on any usb cable, but the tab must be off and it will not show signs of charging. I'm pretty sure that this was charging from the computer.
My device battery is way low.. I'm charging on normal USB so it's trickling up at a rate of about 0x0010 per 2 minutes. At this rate, the device will be ready to use in aproximately 1.5 hours... And until then i'm sure nothing will show on the screen.
This may or may not apply to using the Barnes and Nobel cable. I do not have one available though.
So, if you ever come across a situation where the device won't turn on even after being plugged in, leave it plugged in for a few hours. It could have a case of the "sleeping death".
Also, I'm able to verify that the device... even when totally powered off will charge on a standard USB cable.

Ahhh... So we can't use a generic power brick or car charger and have the NT charge at full rate (unless we also muck with the USB cable). Thanks for this info!

[Q] USB to Micro USB Cable Proprietary to SGP?

Is the USB to Micro USB cable used by the SGP 4 or 5 a proprietary cable to this specific device? I have read several posts here and on other forums that some cables don't work or some chargers with micro USB connections don't charge the SGP. Is there something special in the wiring of the cable that comes with the SGP. I would like a spare cable and a car charger, but want to be sure I am getting one that will work.
Thanks.
Been wondering this myself, I read a write up on another forum with a lot of different specs amongst different micro usb samsung chargers it made my head spin.....I read that they(Phone manufactures) will be making a micro-usb standard next year amongst phone manufactures that should eliminate this issue....I have a LG micro usb charger that does nothing for my galaxy player.
I've been using a short USB to microUSB cable from Sandisk intended for their Clip Zip players. No problems charging or transferring data to the SGP 5.0.

could you post a picture of this? like plug in the clip zip through the usb to the sgp 5
The AC and car chargers for my Verizon LG Revere phone will both charge the SGP 4. The connector is a commonly-used mini USB standard, shaped like the letter 'D' when viewed from the end.
Has anyone actually gone out and bought a cable or charger for the SGP5 that works? It is nice that this or that phone or device's cable and charger work -but if you don't own that phone or device to get the cable or charger from, it does not help. And Samsung does not seem to offer OEM cables or chargers on their site.
SGP needs micro-usb with data shorted to gnd to charge
Just like my Toshiba TG01, the SGP needs a micro-usb connection with the data pin shorted to ground in order to charge correctly. In the Samsung charger that comes with the US version, the charging cable is a straight micro-usb data connector, which means the charger must have the data pin shorted. This way, the cable itself can be plugged into the PC for data transfer. Personally, I have hacked up an adapter (female USB to male USB) which has the two pins shorted, so I can plug the adapter in-line with the data cable into any USB port that supplies a regulated 5V, and the SGP will charge. Otherwise, you need to make sure the charger has the proper implementation of the shorted data pins.

I understand what you are saying but not sure how to implement it to make an adapter such as you have. Do you short the D+ and D- wires in the adapter cable to the ground wire - touch (connect) all three together?
I have been using the charging cable for my LG cosmos 2 and it works fine. I have, however, only used it for charging, not data.

Wouldn't all USB port chargers - by that I mean a car charger with a usb port in it or a wall charger with a usb port in it, have the data pins disconnected or shorted out as they are made for charging only and of course, no data transfer?
My Optimus-V cable does not work for charging or USB.
My car charger for my Optimus does not charge my SGP5.
My Logitech Mouse cable does charge my SGP5, but USB to PC does not work.
I have a car charger ordered not received yet, 50-50 shot at working.
A "standard" would be nice!
That's odd... Nearly all Samsung devices (except for Tabs) follow the USB charging standard, which is that D+ and D- need to be shorted together by the charger to indicate a dumb charger.
iPad/iPhone chargers don't do this - iDevices do NOT follow the standard.

Rezound charger port question

Hey, I currently don't have the Rezound and was wondering if any owners can help.
The charger port looks kind of different. Can the usual microUSB or miniUSB (whatever its called) charger work on that and also for data or do I have to have the stock cable for both charging and cable?
Thanks

Female USB-C to Micro USB adapter

Hi,
I can't seems to find a Female USB-C to Micro USB adapter anywhere.
Can someone share a link to a place that do sell them.
Do you mean an adapter that converts a female USB-C to a female microUSB or one that has a female USB-C on the one end and a microUSB on the other?
What we need is an adapter which we can use to charge our legacy devices with the dash charger. So female usb-c to male microUSB. All i could find is with some ****ty cheap adapter which is falling apart on aliexpress, which I don't trust.

Would this do "USB Type-C to MicroUSB Female Adapter"? I'd previously bought their old OTG mSD adapter and just a few days ago ordered their Dash Micro G3 Type-C (OTG mSD reader) for my OP5.
Their products are on Amazon but at least in Canada their more expensive than buying directly from the Meenova web site. Shipping is not as fast as Amazon usually is but the products are less expensive than on Amazon. At least I didn't have to pay any customs fees or local sales tax in Canada. I found their products simply work and are durable as my original micro-USB OTG card reader still works perfectly. If it wasn't for the OP5's Type C connector I'd not even be buying another OTG mSD reader.
Lets try to make it clearer i want to take a cable which is male end is USB-C and plug it to an adapter and I would like that the male end of the adapter will be micro usb.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01IEG4RXM
I'm guessing you need it for a dock like I do, just ordered this today.
That product doesn't have good reviews... Can't find it nd one that does haha
i use this in my oneplus 5, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018S827GU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
works with: oppo ha-2se, olds OTG usb adapters, dualshock 4, transfer data from pc, works with everything I tested so far!

Best combination of charger and hdmi adapters

So I have the stock charger, a rather generic charge cable, a generic hdmi cable, and an Insignia NS-PU378CHM Usb-c to three port HDMI /USB 3.0 /USB-C power
The problem: when I hook up hdmi and am running DeX on my TV, the battery drains. Even with external power connected.
So I measure the current the charger is delivering, and when using the hdmi adaptor, I'm getting about 1/2 an amp. When I plug power in directly to the tablet, I get a full amp. Battery drains faster than it charges when using the adapter.
I don't know if I need a better charger, to suuply more current under load, a better hdmi adapter / power adapter, a better power cable (but the fact the cable supplies twice the current when plugged in directly suggests it isn't the cable).
Does anyone have a combo they use that keeps power from draining when running dex on hdmi?
Or should I figure it is impossible to supply enough current to keep the battery charged at 100% when running hdmi / dex?
Thanks,
Joe

I'm recopying this from the Galaxy 9 thread referenced above in the hope someone here has tried this adaptor...
This thread is pretty old, but I'm finally looking at upgrading and have some questions about the Ugreen UCB C / USB 3.1 + HDMI Adaptor.
I'm looking at the USB C - 5 Port Adaptor here:
https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Adapte.../dp/B077FZQS95
In the notes it says that
USB C PD fast charging is only for laptops but not for phones. Phones only support normal charging.
Do NOT recommend you charge phone through USB 3.0 port as USB port only can only offer max 1.5A current and will charge your phone slowly
So I'm trying to figure out, is this like a powered USB hub that needs a PD brick to power the hub and then the hub powers the tabled (with 1.5A max), and separately powers the HDMI adaptor, UCB 3.1 devices etc., or is this a power-pass through that powers the tablet (slow) and then the tablet powers the USB devices?
In other words, is there an advantage to buying a $20-30 PD wall brick to power this hub, which the tablet doesn't support, or am I as good as I'm going to get with the original Samsung Lightning charger that came with the tablet?
Thanks,
Joe
I bought one of the U-Green hubs rated for 100W PD:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RW343WG/
This one has two USB 3.0 ports, a USB C charger-in port, HDMI, and two card readers, one full size SD, one micro-sd.
Because all of the documentation specifies it uses power delivery type chargers, I was worried it would have problems with a Samsung lightning charger. No problems. With the original lightning charger, the tablet recharges to and holds at 100% even when loaded by hdmi, an external hard drive, a USB thumb drive, and a micro sd card. The simpler / cheaper hub I bought when I got the tablet discharges when hdmi + the same charger is plugged in.
The reviews complained it gets hot enough to burn your finger when touched, but I haven't noticed this at all. This could be a function of the total power delivered to the hub I believe the lightning charger is only 15W. The hub is rated at 100W with PD cgarger. So only a fraction of the power is transmitted through the hub when charging with Samsung lightning charger. It seems most of the 100W is used to charge a PD laptop or Apple device, not the peripherals.
The one change I'd make to it, is that I'd like to have a spring loaded recessed slot for the micro sd card reader. In this hub, it is pushed in / pulled out of the slot leaving ~ 1/4 inch sticking out from the body of the reader when the micro sd card is loaded. If you leave the card in all the time (to use as an external hard drive) there will be a danger of the card snapping. A minor quibble.
I'm happy that it allows the tablet to maintain 100% charge while running hdmi.
Joe
I have been trying a couple of multiport adapters (USB-C, USB-A, HDMI) but while USB-A and HDMI seem to work fine, the charging port seems to do nothing. The tablet does not indicate it is being charged, and when connected to a PC there is no data connection.
There is a suspicious remark in the documentation:
Operation
• Connect the plug to a USB-CTM port on your computer.
...
At the time this manual was written, Android smartphones were not supported.

So is it possible that this adapter is not supported by our Tab S4? I would be surprised since I read here that other adapters do work.
For completeness, it is a Renkforce USB C naar HDMI + USB 3.0 Multiport-adapter.

Your description is confusing to me, and I had to translate the product description of your adaptor from Dutch to English, but...
Plug the USB C male connector from the adaptor into your tablet. Your adaptor has three ports:
1) USB 3.0 female - connect to a USB device such as a mouse, keyboard, thumb drive, etc. I'm not sure if you can connect this port to a PC or not.
2) HDMI female - hook to a display
3) USB C female - power input port only. Does not carry data. Does not connect to a PC. Plug your power supply into this port using the same cable that you charge your tablet with.. The charging icon should activate. Your tablet should stay charged while using the other ports, or at least discharge more slowly.
It sounds like you are trying to plug the charging port into a PC. Doesn't work as far as I know.
Thanks for the reply. This is what I do:
1. Plug the USB-C cable from the adapter into the tablet C port.
2. Plug HDMI cable (connected to a monitor) into the adapter HDMI port. This is detected, Samsung Dex starts, and the monitor displays the Dex desktop.
3. Plug keyboard/mouse into the USB-A port of the adapter. This is picked up by the tablet and I can use the keyboard/mouse.
Alternatively, when I plug a USB stick into the USB-A port of the adapter, the tablet shows a new USB storage device.
So far, so good.
4. I connect the Samsung power supply to the USB-C port of the adapter. Nothing happens. The tablet does not start charging (or discharging less). I tried different power supplies and cables, makes no difference.
When I connect the power supply with the same cable to the tablet it charges normally. When I connect the tablet using this cable to a PC hub the tablet also start charging, albeit slowy.
So as far as I can see I did nothing wrong. What suprises me most is that almost everything works fine, except charging.
I've ordered a new adapter (different brand) to see if this makes a difference.
I think it should work... I have a couple adaptors similar to yours and they all work. Particularly Insignia NS-PU378CHM I referenced above.
I do think that adaptors that say they support power delivery (PD) work better than cheaper generic adaptors. Even though the Tab S4 doesn't support
PD itself. I strongly recommend the Ugreen adaptor above.
Good luck,
Joe
I would have bought the Ugreen immedeately if they were easily available in this part of the world. Buying from Amazon is expensive and delivery is slow.
I got myself another multiport hub, brand A-Konic, and this time all three ports seem to work correctly. USB-C charging. USB-A OTG and HDMI. However, Samsung Dex on the monitor is only 1280x720 (on the S4 it is 2560x1600; the monitor is 1920x1080). Not sure if this is related to the hub.
I'm glad you found something that works. I don't know about screen resolutions. There are other threads that discuss HDMI resolution. I think the HDMI cable can make a big difference.
Take care,
Joe

Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 working 100w adaptor ?
Hello I have the following question to all owners of samsung galaxy tab s4. I have a desire to buy the following docking stantion for my tablet. I have a question if it will work correctly.
USB C Hub, USB C Docking Station, QGeeM 12 in 1 Triple Display Type C Hub to Dual 4K HDMI & DP,USB C to USB Adapter,100W PD, Gigabit Ethernet, USB C Card Reader,USB Docking Station
Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 does it support thunderbolt ?
Will work seamlessly with a 100w adapter?
It will work but it won't use all its capacity. The tablet only can charge at 18w.
I am having good luck with the AUKEY 5-in-1 USB-C Hub, here is the AMZN link:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B089M7WSHM/
It will give screen mirroring to TV. I have used it on both a 720p and a UHD (2160x3840) TV.
It can charge through the hub and use HDMI out and ethernet on the S4. I just wish it wouldn't try to make me setup DEX everytime I plug it in.
