[Q] Weak Wi-Fi? - HTC Radar

Has anyone else had issues with the strength of the wi-fi signal on this phone? When I'm in certain areas of my house, I will have severe lag with browsing, with the People hub, etc. Music and video will stream poorly, with heavy buffering. Basically, I get all the signs of low signal. The problem is, I've never had a problem with other phones I've used, including an HD7, Dell Venue Pro, Nexus S, Nokia N8, etc.
I tested the WiFi signal in these areas, and I get back a consistent signal between 70dbm - 80dbm, so I have a moderate amount of signal to work with. Has anyone else noticed poor WiFi coverage with this phone? Should I get it exchanged?

Same. Something is definitely fishy with the wi-fi on this device. It seems to come and go, and manifests as poor or even no wi-fi capability even when the phone says it is connected to a strong wi-fi signal.
I frequently cannot get a solid Tango video call going between 2 Radars on my home wi-fi network. Pretty frustrating seeing "network problems" and getting a choppy experience when both phones are on wi-fi with full signal strength.

My WiFi is solid with my N router

Today is my first day with the radar and I'm noticing WiFi issues. I think though some of it is related to Zune WiFi sync connecting...
Sent from my HTC Radar 4G using XDA Windows Phone 7 App

For the people connected to 802.11n routers, are your routers in pure N mode?
The Radar I have can connect to my 802.11g router no problem but can't even find my 802.11n. I'm thinking it doesn't have N connectivity...
Just asking.

Mine is BGN

I found out my particular problem is the Windows Phones only work on the 2.4ghz (currently used on my 802.11g router) band and not the 5ghz (my 802.11n router) band.
Now I know.
To the OP, this 2.4ghz band is usually crowded so maybe where you are going in your house, your phone is meeting with interference (land line wireless phone, neighbors wi-fi, etc...).

I don't think it's an interference issue, as every other device I own has no such issues, including 3 other Windows Phones (Dell Venue Pro, HD7 Omnia 7). And despite already using the channel with the least interference, I've tried switching that around as well. To me, there is clearly something not performing correctly in regards to the WiFi radio on this device.

[Q] Wi-Fi Problems

Got a 32GB version.
All my other devices, windows laptops, android tablet connect up to my wifi fine. I am using WPA with AES (static IP). The HP Touchpad connects, but there is huge packet loss and it barely can keep a connection. It doesn't drop out per se, just cant get any data. Tried changing router settings, being 30cm from it etc. Still same problem. Any apps/tweaks i can try on the Touchpad?
Maybe it has something to do with Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n with WPA, WPA2, WEP, 802.1X authentication;
maybe your router doesnt support it.
Just curious, are you running any of the Preware patches?
I am having a similar problem with my 16gb wifi model. Wifi works for a short while, then drops the signal. If I go in and turn off wifi on the device and turn it back on again - then it will work fine for another few minutes until it eventually drops the connection again.
I had this problem before I loaded any preware tweaks - and after as well. I am running the Govnah app to overclock to 1.5ghz and a few other logging tweaks.
I did some digging and it seems the most likely issue is a problem with the firmware of my router (D-link DIR-655), specifically the wireless n protocol. I am going to try updating my router firmware and see if that helps out.
By the way - no issues with my two laptops, dell streak 7, or my wii - so its definately isolated to be an issue specific to my touchpad/router combination...
I too am having problem. I don't drop the wireless connection, just a internet connection. All of a sudden nothing on my touchpad can connect to the internet, until I turn the wireless off and then back on again. Very weird. Everything else working off of my Dlink DGL-4500 works fine, except the touchpad.
I notice a few of you have Drinks, maybe thats the cause?
I'm running on FIOS and using Verizon's provided router. Works flawlessly. I've had one issue w/ WiFi, but a reboot solved that and has never come back.
I had problems with my dlink 615. TP would lose connection after 20 minutes or so. My wife's would do the same. My evo 4g had the same problem. I changed the router to the G only setting. I haven't had any problems with either TP since that change. The 615 uses draft N and was one of the early routers with this. I think it causes problems with some devices. I haven't really lost any speed either as the 615 will only connect at the speed of the "slowest" wireless card on the network, and I have some devices at g speed that are always on. I do plan to get a new router at some point.

See my Touchpad is the ONLY device having problems, that's the part I don't get. All of my devices are wireless N as well.
TouchPad WiFi issues
Okay, I've tried every custom kernel available with almost the same results. I'm beginning to think my unit is defective, but I am hoping it is the custom kernels and not my unit. I haven't tried restoring the stock kernel but I suppose I should have before writing this. Anyway..onto the issue!
Does anyone have this problem where WiFi will randomly stop transmitting data? It happens most when I am browsing the web with the stock browser and almost all the time it is after the unit awakes from sleep. Sometimes it happens while browsing but the majority of the time it happens when coming out of sleep. WiFi is still on and connected to my network, but network activity is not there. The only way to fix it is by doing one of the following:
-Turn off and on WiFi
-Launch the HP software catalog.
The second method one seems to give the network a jump start and WiFi will begin working again and data will transmit.
Freeza I think that's a common slug, I read some other posts about it. Heck mine was doing it a lot, but not so much lately. I don't think you have defective device.

I have this issue too, on two Touchpads on the same wifi network (mine and my wife's). The issue vanishes on my portable wifi 4G hotspot and my much better office wifi network, so it's probably my router. I've ordered a MUCH better router, and if that kills the problem, I'll know for sure within a week.
I hear this is a common, but situation-specific issue.
phew.... Was getting worried for a bit there. Thanks guys. Hopefully the next webOS update can fix it

I also have this problem. The wireless on the TP will stop working, even though it says it is connected. Disabling and re-enabling the wireless fixes it temporarily.
I also have an 802.11N wireless router. It is a Trendnet TEW-633GR. No other wireless device has ever had an issue with it, so I think the touchpad doesn't handle something properly...

[Q] Wifi Roam Free

I have one wireless router in my office (Linksys WRT54G) and another wireless router in my living room on the other side of the house (Linksys E1000)
Both are flashed with DD-WRT firmware. I have them setup to allow free roaming across/between the two.
Just about every wireless device I have will roam freely between the two routers except my Transformer Prime. I can be connected to the office wireless and have a great signal, walk to the other side of the house where the office signal drops off and pick up a much stronger signal off of the living room wireless but it will not drop the office connection and switch to the stronger signal in the living room.
I know the setup is correct because my Nexus S, Evo, wifes Evo Shift and iPad2 all will roam freely. Is there anyway to force the Prime to drop the weaker signal and switch to the stronger one? Thanks!
in ICS on my phone, there is a wifi option to avoid networks with weak signals. Presumably this is done by MAC and not SSID...but it's moot as ICS on the prime does not seem to have this option.
I had a similar setup, though most of the devices in my house are stationary, so i ended up reconfiguring to an Upstairs/downstairs SSID until i can invest in a more powerful router.
edit: like one of these! http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/09/amped-wireless-2012-lineup/

Hopefully this will get sorted with some new wifi drivers, or maybe after some devs start cooking up custom roms..

Did you ever get a solution to your roaming issue? I'm having the same troubles with my TF201. It refuses to switch to the higher signal access point even if I'm standing right beside it. The only way to switch is turning WIFI radio signal off the first access point when I go to the other side of the house. My Apply iPod seems to make the switch automatically.
Cheers.
P.S. I found a thread that discusses this issue at length and an app that appears to correct the issue
1) Thread: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=12649
2) App: http://android.googlecode.com/issues/attachment?aid=126490082000&name=MKermaniWiFiScanner-2.apk&token=Zwkr6Bx0HBP1XV4ZYFKiTAapeX8%3A1340206114901
I updated my post above with link to a thread that discusses the issue at length. It appears to be Android OS in general; specifically, ASUS and Samsung products.
I installed MKermaniWiFiScanner-2.apk posted above and it seems to work fine. The only complaint I submit to the developer was to remove the notifications every time the wifi scans for a different signal.
I called ASUS to inform them of the problem.
Anyone else having the same issue?

[Q] 5GHZ Wifi

I was surprised to find that this phone supports bot 2.4GHz and 5GHz for wifi. However, I am having a problem getting it to connect to my 5GHz N radio. It will see it and says that the signal is excellent. I type in my WPA key and hit connect. It attempts to connect then goes back to disconnected. If I click on the name of it, it show signal as poor and link speed as -1Mbps. It connects fine to the 2.4GHz radio. The router is a Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300H running DD-WRT. Has anyone else had this issue?
i thought wifi was only 2.4ghz on this phone. my 5ghz network doesnt even show on my phone.
5ghz seems to be working fine for me
only certain 5ghz channels are supported. see if ur router is on channel 36 for 5ghz.

I have been able to use channels 140 and 149 as well as 36. What I did notice is that the first time I connect to (the very first time or if I make a change to the router) the wifi signal will drop and start several times.....I find if I just turn off wifi and turn it back on and reconnect it will hold.
Actually, I have it running on 144 and working now. I had to set the mode from N only to NA mixed.

Hmmm...mine is set to N only...being its the only device on my 5G connection.
Yea, the only thing on mine is my other router setup as a bridge for my downstairs. I guess ill leave it since its working

I've got an apple airport extreme. my evo connects just fine on 5ghz
I have a Cisco ISR wireless router and I use strictly 5Ghz. It's wireless-A, not wireless-N, but it's strictly 5Ghz and it scan and uses whatever channel it wants. No issues so far.
I tried N network a while ago on my older phones (not 5Ghz N) and noticed more battery drain VS G. Since then I have switched my N to 5Ghz and just use my ipad3 for it. My phone I keep on G network. I don't see any real point to having it on a N network. G I still pull 10+ megabits down which is more than enough for pretty much anything the phone can do. Not really worth the extra battery drain in my opinion. My ipad I like on higher speed since I stream MKV files but the phone I think is pointless at least for me.

I actually had the exact same problem as you mentioned. The one thing I wanted to add to your excellent description of problem symptoms is that it says "Authenticating", and that is when it drops the signal to -1Mbps. Something during the authentication process seems to kill the radio connectivity. This has not happened on any of my other 802.11n devices. It connects fine on the same router's 802.11g. I had no issues with my previous phone (Samsung Epic Galaxy S).
Interestingly my router is a different brand but perhaps it shares some similar chipset. My equipment as follows:
Bone stock Sprint HTC Evo 4g LTE (on Ice Cream Sandwich, duhh)
Belkin Play N600 HD Wireless Dual-Band N+ Router (F7D8301 v1)
After reading the other posts here it inspired me to play with my Router configs for 802.11N. Turns out after making some adjustments I was able to get connected.
-I had the following selected:
Wireless Channel: Auto
Extension Channel: 40 (grayed out)
Wireless Mode: 802.11a&n -Worked after changed to 802.11n
Bandwidth: 20/40MHz
Protected Mode: OFF -Worked after changed to On
802.11e/WMM QoS: On
I honestly think it was the Protected Mode that made the difference. Here is what the router help page says about that feature: Protected Mode
NOTE: In most situations, best performance (throughput) is achieved with Protected Mode OFF. If you are operating in an environment with HEAVY 802.11b traffic or interference, best performance may be achieved with Protected Mode ON.
So long story short, try turning Protected Mode ON in your 802.11n configs first and see if that gets it going for you. Hope that helps!
P.S. After changes above I ran some Speedtest.net for Android tests (back to back) and got the following from the next room over (about 20 feet from router):
Test 1: On 802.11n: 17024kbps down, 5857kbps up, 27ms ping
Test 2: On 802.11n: 18134kbps down, 6266kbps up, 39ms ping
Test 3: On 802.11g: 15385kbps down, 6091kbps up, 25ms ping
Test 4: On 802.11g: 22212kbps down, 5785kbps up, 43ms ping

Wifi connectivity issues

I constantly drop wifi in my house. Is this just my phone or is it an issue? Tried everything and won't stay connected. Network just disappears and then connects 10-15 second later.
I have some issues also. Just bad firmware on LG side
I'd check your wifi modem, I use my LG V10 on numerous different modems, and have no problems with it. It connects to my home, alone with a few places I go to, and even when tje signal is extremely weak. So I'm not seeing the same thing
Also have issues on Wi-Fi
2.4 seems to hold connection longer than 5ghz. Luckily I have unlimited data. I have almost never used WiFi on this device due to this. The problem is both on my Asus RT router and my brother's Netgear Nighthawk router. Both with latest firmware. I'd like to have the option of a stable WiFi connection though.

I've read a few posts that suggest being sure the MAC address of your phone is registered with your router. I've come from 2 galaxies and I do feel the LG is a little more sensitive to a low or fluctuating signal. I "feel" it, but everytime I actually compare, it doesn't seem to be the case
Thanks for the advice

Tried the registering the Mac on both bands. Tried several device resets. Disconnected all other attached devices from the router. Had much hope for this. But no bueno. Still dropped connection after less the three minutes. Disabled 4G and the other nanny settings for WiFi on the V10. Just hoping for the much needed firmware update (s) for this sweet phone.
Again, thank you for the advice and your time.

wifi calling issues

So I am on t-mobile, and I also have one of the routers provided to me by t-mobile (I believe it's an Asus) , and I have noticed recently that my wifi calling has been sucking big time. It cuts in and out and says I need to connect to a wifi network, when I am connected. It's like it doesn't notice that there is a wifi connection. Anyone have suggestions as to what might help?

WiFi calling on Android is hit and miss. I wish it was as stable as Blackberry UMA calling.
I tried the old turn it on and off again on the modem and router and it seems to have helped quite a bit.
Unfortunately, I have this issue for a quite while. Funny thing wifi calling works smoothly on pixel or essential phone!
How old is the router?
The router's WiFi radio maybe showing its age by being intermittent with its throughput's strength and/or signal's strength.
Try with newer router or access point. If there is a coffee shop with very good throughput strength (this is most important) you can do a test with that hotspot.
