Ill try it on Wednesday when I get the device. Atleast we can use titanium.
One thing I was thinking is there any way we can boot into custom recovery with temp root? Because I know on one phone that I rooted for someone it would just reboot into a temporary custom recovery from which stuff could be flashed. Obviously if it boot looped you needed to RUU restore but it was worth the trouble to get root.
is this wireless tether app susceptible to verizon identifying unauthorized wifi tether use? I know on other devices only certain ROMS are safe.
Just tried this. Unfortunately it doesn't work at all for me. I tried running Cache Cleaner NG and it said that it was unable to get root permissions. I tried clicking on SuperUser (the app itself) and it FCs every time.
EDIT: Rebooted and tried again and it appears to be working.
EDIT2: Not working again. Seems to only last a few minutes.
Alright enough is enough. Imma try it.now. all this talk about root is driving me nuts. Thanks Nils..

I tried to get temp root using the zerg technique, and it didn't work too good. I want to try this method, but I'm not sure how to remove the Superuser from my first attempt. It doesn't show up as an uninstallable app. Can anyone shed some light for me? Thanks!
its worked for me! though it still didnt mount the SD, so i took off the back lifted the battery a LITTLE and used a paper clip to slide out the sd and then to slide it back in. then i went to TI and it didnt want to work, so i uninstalled and reinstalled both, and then it worked. now i have everything frozen that i wanted.
The first try it worked but something didnt go through so i reboot the phone tried it again and worked like a charm. thank you greatly appriciated

You know, you can go into SETTINGS>SD & Phone Storage and remount it that way... for next time.
I tried this and mine also unmounted my SD Card and Titanium didn't have root access. Uninstalled Titanium and the phone rebooted on its own and is now in a an infinite boot loop. Guess I am going to have to use HBOOT, wipe the phone and start ALL FREAKING OVER AGAIN! fml

Lol, talk about doing it the hard way! Just go to Settings>SD & Phone Storage>Mount SD Card and wa-la! No need to physically slide it out then back in lol.

No, you install it from your PC
what i have frozen safely without any ill affects.
all verizon apps besides backup assistant, my verizon mobile, voicemail.
also took off, facebook, flickr, amazon, polaris, internet, mobile im, blockbuster, also games.
but....try them out yourself....this is what i have taken off without anything wrong....doesnt mean it wont screw your phone up!

Awesome. If they stay frozen i can live without soff/root for much longer.
I am having the same issue with applying the update, root installs fine and when I reboot root is gone, along with Superuser, Busybox, etc. installed it a few times and every time I reboot root gets lost.

Thats the whole point of TEMP root. When you reboot, Root is GONE. You have to Re-root every time you reboot your phone.

So, I got an Atrix a few days ago and decided that it would be a good idea to root it. I ran the GingerBreak.exe file that i found on this site. I followed the instructions to the letter and got a reboot when it was done. It now has an app on there called Superuser, as it is supposed to. To the best of my knowledge the root was sucsessfull, however, I try and install CWM recovery, so that i can install something other than MotoBlur, and when i click the app to install from my sd card it tells me that for my own protection i can only run apps from trusted places. I have seached through as many forums as my eyes can handle and if anyone can tell me how to get this damb thing to work the way i want it to.

Ok, sorry, first check to see if you have the option to check unknown sources, under the settings -> Application Settings.
Furthermore, I think the best way for you to do it and also get you comfortable with the file structure of your new phone would be to download Root Explorer & SQLite Editor from the market. Yes, I know they cost a few $$ but you will use them both in the future, and they are well worth it.
Once those are installed, use Root Explorer to navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
Click on settings.db and it will open with SQLite Editor.
Select "secure"
Change the value of "instal_non_market_apps" from 0 to 1, by holding down on 0 and selecting edit field. Save Changes, and back out to Root Explorer and exit.
Phone may require a re-boot.
You should now be good to go for installing non market .apk files.
Plus, now that you know how to do all that, you can also try this:

After getting CWM installed, I would suggest installing a P-ROM, such as Gingerblur or GladAtrix. These will de-odex your system and get rid of the bloatware:

You gotta get something enabled called sideloading working. look for something called gladenable http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1017373 that'll do it or grab droid explorer http://de.codeplex.com/ that will force the install from your comp without sideloading enabled.

Hi can you unroot ?
I was like you at first. I rooted a couple days ago but I couldn't download any untrusted sources apps. I was gonna go the sideloading route or use gladenabler or something. But I ran out of time near a pc to load all that stuff. So I was searching root android apps on the market and came across one called Non-Market apps enabler. It costs $1.39 or something. I was skeptical of it but I said since so cheap, let me try it out. I downloaded n installed. The app works flawlessly n like a charm. It brought the option into settings to check off allow untrusted sources download n install. It works. Ever since then, I'm now downloading any n every app I want. From the market or not. This is the fastest way to get the option checkbox untrusted sources into your rooted phone. I thought it was b.s. Bit it really works and I don't have to do all that sideloading or putting glandenabler or all that into my phone. I have the checkbox marked off now n I download what I want. Good luck. N remember, it's called Non-market apps enabler. I'm on froyo 2.2.2 build 4.1.8.3 , rooted using gingerbreak and it worked for me instantly!
From what I've seen (e.g., Bloatware Disabler and ViperMod), the bloatware zappers out there are all permanent and thus survive a reboot (unlike the root itself).
I'm one of many that wants the option of a one-click root that is totally temporary but does everything you'd want (overclock, Hulu fix, etc). The missing piece of the puzzle here is a temporary bloat disabler or uninstaller.
Does this kind of mod exist? If so I'd be happy to incorporate it into my existing one-click roots.
I'm guessing that if the changes are non-permanent (i.e., are undone at reboot) then the best we can do is FREEZE and not uninstall the apps, right?
If that's true, I propose two roots: Root 1 strips out all the bloatware, overclocks, roots, etc etc (all the good stuff ). If you want to return to stock, Root 2 will reroot, REINSTALL THE DELETED APPS, then reboot so that you're back to stock in terms of system files.
Going either direction on this will, I think, be a step in the right direction.
(PS: I apologize for my noobishness; however, I've been creating some helpful tools for people recently and I think this is the next step, but some overall guidance first would really help! Please consider my earnestness before flaming! )

Im 100% sure it will come back on a reboot, though. With vMBM, you can just enable everything from the Advanced menu in a few seconds. Were you aware of that?
I really like where your headed with this. I did manage to delete a single file and did an install of swype and it seems to be the only thing that sticks after reboot. Think it was the install file from oem.

So you're saying that Vipermod simply freezes the apps, and they can be re enabled easily from a menu? Do apps stay frozen Thu reboot?
I guess what I'm thinking here is that I want a root that 100% strips out bloated (so I guess uninstall) but which either does NOT persist Thu boot or else can be restored later with one click deeply (i tried to explain this in OP. If I understand vipermod correctly, I think that'd be the second best option (merely freezing apps). Of course, in the preceding I'm assuming that uninstalled is better than frozen, all things being equal.
What do you think?

As to Adfree, there's no need to add that. I only want my oneclick to do stuff you'd otherwise have to do manually after rooting. This isn't necessary with Adfree--after root just use the fast reboot app and address works fine, no? (or does it NOT work? Angry Birds seems to have LESS ads but isn't totally adfree--I've been assuming it was simply "beating" the adfree app.)

How about just freezing apps with titanium backup? It sticks with a reboot and only takes a single click per app to freeze/unfreeze.

Titanium freeze uses the pm disable. Pm disable will stick through reboot. If you want to not have a system app only til reboot, just delete in terminal or with root explorer. And I believe a data/factory reset wipe would restore frozen apps

Require frequent reroot... Sorry to hear that. Only happens to me if I let battery run completely out.
Return to stock... Can't you use RUU for that?
Adfree... I've had really mixed luck with.
AS For bloat, I use titanium backup. No problems on my end.

Correct, it uses the pm disable command on apps. It stays after a reboot but can be easily re-enabled after a reboot.
basically this guy wants a script similar to vipermod that "rm stupid.apk" from the /system/app directory instead of "pm disable" which is very very simple. that way upon reboot it all returns

So I guess I'm confused. If i temp root, then go into root explorer and delete all kinds of system files--they'll come back after reboot?
And yes, my root sticks til a true reboot, but not thereafter. Isn't that the case with everyone?

If you disable the app in titanium or thru adb then the .apk file still is on the phone..but NOT usable or loadable...if you uninstall the app then the file is off the phone...then if you do a reboot....the phone will reinstall the programs you deleted but the disabled apps stay disabled, invisible to the machine but the apk of that program is still on the machine..usually in /SYSTEM/APPS or /DATA/APPS. Ugly but it works like a charm. And from what I read...it is for everybody....hope this answers your question.

As said above yes they will come back. You have no write access to system. So although you think you are deleting them, you are not. You are only "deleting" them from cache. Disabling them, actually writes to an xml file in the data directory (which apps have access to). If you have fast boot turned on, you are not truly "rebooting" and that's why root stays.
I ma using Juice Defender, but even with that my phone is always about dead by 8pm, even when i hardly use it. I am not rooted, but I did try to root my phone for the sole purpose of getting better battery life. I do not want to wipe anything from my phone! There is a thread about how my attempts at root did not work.
I too have faced the same problem. I had CM7 installed, battery life is terrible. Won't last for a day with minimal use. After i switched to DarkyROM 10.2.2, I was able to use my phone for 1d 12 hours w/o charging.

Ok do this. Go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028 Then go to How DO I Root and choose the option A. Download that update.zip. Put it on your internal SD as is (don't unzip it and make sure that it the only Update.zip in your internal SD). Boot into recovery mode. Hit Reinstall Packages. It will cycle through, hit Reinstall Packages again. It will run through the cycle, roboot (you might have to reboot it yourself) and BAM!!! You are Rooted. No need to use Superoneclick, it is all right there in that one simple update.zip.
Now that you are rooted, go to market and get app called Battery Calibration (or if you have Clockwork there is an option to wipe battstats but you are having ahard enough time rooting, so lets stick to an easy apk). Install Battery Calibrator, intsall it. It will ask for SU permission, say yes. Plug your phone in and charge up to 100%. Once there hit Calibrate and there you go. You'll notice better battery life. Side note: I have had Juice Defender (plus) for almost a year and have had nothing but good experiences with it. Kick in the extra $ and get the Plus (not the Ultimate) and you can configure it on an app by app basis. I can get nealy 30+hours on a single charge with music, XDA, podcasts running almost all day.

I've read it and the other one. Clearly you are not doing something right. I followed the instructions on the Stickie at the top of the forum and was rooted in under 3 minutes.
Looking again at your post, if you have the Superuser.apk, you have root. Wither go into your SU app, click on it and erase permissions, then try Titanium again. Should ask for Root permission. Or go into settings>applications>and find your SU app. Click on it and clear data, then try TB and it shoudl ask for Root permission.
I do have superuser.apk, but im not sure if thats because oneclickroot added it. When I open battery calibrator or titanium backup, they all say i dont have root.
Wipe the data in the su app. This will clear the permissions. The wipe TB data and try again. If yiy have the su app, you should be rooted. Sounds like a permission issue.

Don't delete it as it will NOT reinstall. When you push the Superuser app in your drawer, what happens? Does a list of apps come up? Does anything come up? If a list of apps come up, click on Titanium and a pop up will come up. Hit forget. Then go into Titanium and it will ask for Root permission. Might say it does have it, close out of TB, go to task manager and close it that way. Then re-open it and if it didn't ask for Root permission before, it shoudl now.
When i open the superuser app it doesnt show any apps. just says "No apps listed"

Lets move this over to your other thread since this one is supposed to be about battery issues.
Try to pull another different Root app, like the batter calibrator in and run it and see what happens with it. Does it ask for root permission or not. Did you hit the "problems" button in TB? Do you have current busybox?
Talk to you over there but I am about out of suggestings other than the above or booting into revicery and wipe /cache and /dalvik-cache (not fatory reset/data). Also I have some real work to do so I might be sporatic with my responsed until later on.
so far the only app that recognizes root is battery calibrator. Busybox, TB, and autokiller memory optimizer dont recognize root. super user shows no apps. Im wondering if my phone is even rooted, since after using battery calibrator, my phone has dropped 15% in the last 20 minutes. Nothing is even running on my phone. its just sitting there.
Hey guys, hate starting new threads, but this time I just had to. Here's the deal:
First I had a Galaxy Ace. I rooted it, and used root normally for a couple of months. Then something went bazzerk (don't know how to spell bazzerk xD), just as it is on my new Xperia neo. My root explorer works flawlessly and I'm able to mount my system r\o / r\w when ever I want and explore all sys files. BUT, my ROM toolbox, GO backup, etc. all apps that actualy "touch" system files (I mean change or retrieve the above), freeze when a command is given. I.e. I want to move an unmovable app to the sd card. The file IS moved, but the app freezes on "loading". GO backup: I restore a file, it's completely restored, but the app frezzes on 99% even though the job's done. Why is this happening, and is there a way to fix it?

P.S. This problem sometimes just vanshies, but it's back a few days later.
P.P.S. I tried restarting, taking the battery out, restarting SU, and restarting the freezing apps, nothing erases the problem.
Have to you tried to factory reset in your phones settings?
If you´re rooted check the superuser app and loock at the log
what does superuser state?

Install root checker from market Nd check whether u r rooted correctly or not
Are you using superuser or supersu app?

No, I think that would fix it but then I'd have to set back everything on my phone, which I don't want

Superuser says everything's fine. I already mentioned I can see all my root files with no problem. But when another app tries the same, it freezes.

Installed, checked. Says it's rooted. I'm using Superuser and it's reporting no problems. Still freezes when an app changes something.
The thing is root works, I mean I can backup\restore app data, freeze apps, etc. but after the phone does this, the app freezes, even though it's done. A very strange problem. Is there anything I could have accidently made to brake it (exept disallowing an app from Superuser rights, I checked that three times; allways allowed) ?
I remember that i faced such problems a few weeks ago...
some root file explorers denied me the acces to the root files while i tried to change a bootanimation
root acces was granted but it didnt worked
afterwards i tried another root file explorer and it worked fine
why ?
i dont know but something went wrong with the first file browser

Thank you all, it so happened that this version of Superuser didn't quite well support these versions of apps. Just changed the ROM Toolbox to a newer version, and it works perfectly.

apparently not working after root
noob here, I did my first root today, and have only been an android user for 2 weeks after defecting from apple since the first iphone. I was a jailbreak veteran of idevices, but I got bored with the stale bread, so I spent my taxmas on a Samsung galaxy s4. Specifically wanting the i9500 version so it would be unlocked to use on net10. I followed the steps from website, and video on Odin. And it looked like it worked perfectly. It wasn't until I tried to my photo gallery app to look at some pictures, and it crashed and wouldn't load. I had the same issue with a business calendar issue app that wouldn't open. I tried clearing system cache on gallery app but no luck. I'm afraid I'm in over my own head now, and might want to restore and start from scratch. The first thing I did after rooting was a full Titanium backup. only things that I installed after root was xposed installer and an app within the installer called swipeback.
I would like to know if there is a fix for this, without having to break away from root? Or if I must,how do I know which stock file I need. I know it's i9500ubueMk1 but there's many different regions.. I bought from a best buy in Charlotte . If there isn't a simple fix to fix why my apps aren't working,then the root does more harm than good, and I wanna go back to normal.
Someone please walk me through this!!

I had the same problem. Theres nothing wrong with your phone, its the app. Instead of root explorer, download root browser. It works better

I tried it and got temporary root on my Verizon Note Edge. I know it is temporary but at least it is root.
I do not have the developer version btw..

I just followed the video that is posted in the OP and that gave me temporary root. I didn't use any .img files.

Doesn't it say to use one of the downloadable boot img files from the linked site? It's a boot.img file.
Also what sorts of things have you tried so far with it?

I have tried Root Explorer and it allows me to read and write to the SD card. I have Root Call blocker and that works as well, I have tried Xposed Framework and so far no go, it does a reboot and you will lose root. This is still a work in progress but it looks a lot more promising than a couple of months ago.
I did not use any img files due to mine being a note edge and I think those files are for those who have taken the lollipop upgrade on their Note 4's. Since we have not received the lollipop upgrade to our edge's yet you should be good to at least temporary root because it is only working on KitKat.
I was able to temp root with king root 4.0.1 apk ... and was able to remove bloatware files from: system/app and: system/priv-app but after reboot they are all back.
Update.... after temp rooting. . Install Titanium Backup and Freeze system apps will enable you to "turn off" apps that you otherwise wouldn't be able to disable through the stock app manager in settings menu.

Was able to turn off The KNOX apps as well... seems to keep root longer without rebooting. HOWEVER root doesn't last forever.. meaning apps like Titanium Backup will lose root... and you will have to reboot and run King root again to get temp root to freeze more apps etc.
This is still a work in progress, hopefully the losing root problem will be fixed soon.
This is nice but after messing with it all week I gave up. I could easily get temp.root and get SU installed but you lose root after about an hour even if you touch nothing. You will also get random reboots a lot and then have to start over.

If you install Titanium Backup and "freeze" all the Knox apps [see post 7, 8, & 9] you can keep root long enough to freeze all unwanted bloatware. That way you can at least "turn off" [disable] those apps from running in background etc. It's something more then we had.

Yup, this worked. All week I was trying to "remove" these applications via tibu but yesterday I just froze them. I still lost root but see everything I froze is still listed as "Turned off" in Application manager. That will do for now, Thanks!
when you temp root, use TiBu to "convert to user app" this should move all the files to the user apps directory instead of system apps then try to uninstall and see if they come back after reboot. Just a hunch but I can't try since I don't have the retail version.

You need to long press on the app. Towards the end of the setting that popup you should see the convert to user app setting.
Easiest way I found was to freeze all the apps you don't want, filter for frozen apps then go through the list converting them to user apps
Edit: this doesn't work. They will install themselves back after doing this.
I figured they would come back.. freezing app is as good as it gets for now.
long press or swipe right to get to the additional options. also thank you guys for confirming that for me. i wasnt for sure since I dont have the retail version to test out on.
also i think i remember reading in the note 4 forum that they were able to get it perma deleted by uninstalling all updates then uninstalling the app or something along those lines. I will go back and read it again to be sure of what i read, i may have misread.

As far as temp root is concerned using King root, I suppose while on a rooted state, one can make changes to the system such as:
1) Enabling 3rd party apps like ES File Explorer to write to SD card by modifying platform.xml as described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524277
2) Enabling hidden menu (if this is important to you) by modifying /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu file.
Even if you lose root, the changes you made to these files should stick, correct?
