does NT support normal apk? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

heard that NT may have BL lock, it really is a bad news.
i'm wondering whether NT support normal apk downloaded from other places?
like installing with other markets and use these markets to install apks?
and could someone tell me the influence if we can't crack this lock?
can we reformat the partitions?can we root the device?
thank you!

Check some of the other threads. Much progress has been made, and its very easy to side load apks.
While no one has rooted it yet, it's still very early. Give it time.
Sent from my SPH-M820-BST using XDA App

yeah, i saw many guys said they sideload the apps, but i don't understand what is sideload

Sideload = loading apk onto an sd card. You can then put sd card into NT and install app that way.
You will need to first enable apps for unknown sources, you can find how to do this in a number of threads.

Sideloading is the installation of an app from a non-approved source. This can involve installing via downloaded or transferred APKs, installing from a sd card, pushing via ADB, etc.

i got it, this means if i have 3rd party market or apk files, i can install applications in NT

As a rule, it appears that you can install most apps by sideloading. This post gives the basics. Read the whole thread and follow it. If you have any questions, just ask them (search first). The XDA community is the kindest that I know of on the internet, people want to help you.

Hope this question is in the right place.
After downloading ANY apk., after clicking on it, a window pops up that reads:
Install Blocked: For security your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market
Below that is "OK" as my only option.
I've visited and revisited the recent rooting threads and other similar sources and found that most if not all arrive at a different option that offers "Settings" that can be changed. Even when I go directly to Settings>Device Settings, I have NO options to alter and allow "Unknown Sources"
Device: 1st Nook - purchased Nov 2011/ firmware 1.2
2nd Nook - purchased approx April 2011/ firmware 1.3
Both units respond the same way. What are my options here. Thanks for any and all help.

You need to allow installation of non-market applications first. To get to that menu, you can use tgps launcher.

Use the nook browser to open the link above. It will give you the option to enable usb debugging (under development) as well as install non-market apps.

Gapps for Archos

Hi all,
Well for everyone who want's to have the Google apps like:
Android market
Youtube
Gmail
etc.
Here is a link to a share where the gapps4archos can be downloaded.
http://code.google.com/p/archos-apps-installer/downloads/list
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
WARNING: You cannot install this appInstaller if you installed gApps4Archos or any other gApps installer. Anytime you switch appInstaller programs, you MUST reset your device back to stock. If you've NEVER installed ANY market/gApps installer, then your good... no need to reset.
NOTE: If you've ONLY used my appInstaller, then you can REMOVE the old files using my app and re-install the apps at the same time, then REBOOT.
1) Download - http://code.google.com/p/archos-apps-installer/downloads/list
2) Copy download to your device via USB (if you didnt download directly using your Archos)
3) Use 'Files' app to locate gAppsInstaller, then execute/install it
4) Choose install packaged apps or choose to install your own packaged 'apps.zip' file located on the internal drive (not sdcard)
4a) There maybe a short delay after you tap an install button (its installing and you'll be notified when its done, about 5-10 seconds)
5) REBOOT!!
6) Follow the Market FIX instructions below
MARKET FIX:
This will get you most missing apps from the market, except some "protect market apps"
Setting-->Manage Applications-->All-->Market (Clear Cache then 'Force Stop' -- DO NOT clear data)
Setting-->Manage Applications-->All-->Google Services Framework (Clear data then 'Force Stop')
REBOOT again
Market Fix video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7l-nySibzeA&feature=player_embedded#!
If you do this correctly you will find most missing apps like 'Copilot Live USA' in the Market. However, some apps will not show because they are "protected" Market apps. These include 'NY Times'. Google search "android protected market apps" if your not familar.
NOTE: The latest version of GMAIL and Youtube can be downloaded in the market...
Thanks to our friends from the archosfans.com forum
Thankyou for this, I have seen how much work you have put into it. Tried gAppsInstaller_v3.apk this morning and seems to be working well, no FC's etc so far...
(edit)Oppss ment to say thankyou Kenyu73 for the app and thanks Dreetje for posting, thought you was Kenyu under a different name...

Well i didn't made it, Kenyu73 did make it It makes my device complete, really love the Archos device!
Thanks! I've looked at these instructions a dozen times on ArchosFans and always missed that market was clear cache not clear data and never figured out why it didn't work right for me. With the latest gapps I'm now seeing most everything. Awesome guide!
Edit: For some reason when I use this installer however, TweetDeck will not run properly. It always Force Closes once I've signed into my account and I cannot fix it. This is one of my favorite apps. If someone could figure this out I would appreciate it.
Edit 2: This installer causes a ton of apps not to launch in my experience thus far. TweetDeck as mentioned, Moblox, Angry Birds, they all just FC or hang endlessly. I'd still recommended the other installer with the same steps outlined in this post.
Stupid question but does "reset your device back to stock" mean anything else than a reboot? Like an Android reset or something?

thanks for the advise on market acces update, now finally updated gmail apk
I have the Google Marketplace up and running and for the most part it works wonderfully. My biggest issue are protected applications I use on my HTC EVO aren't showing up and some of these application I really use / enjoy. Some of these are:
1) BatteryView
2) Battery Watch
3) Splash ID!
4) Monster App Pro (I'm using the non-Pro right now)
I've been trying to add the "Market Access" application to the mix to help me with this issue, but thus far can't get z4root to work. Oh, it says it was successful, but none of the programs that need root can get it from the Super User application.
I can live without these protected applications, they are simply nice to have -- except Splash ID!, which IMHO, is necessary to protect my development personal, professional, and development information. I was able to get a work around for Splash ID, for which I'm thankful.

Excuse my ignorance, but how is this at all new? There's been a gapps hack available for every Archos device for quite some time now. It's always been readily available on ArchosFans.com.

It's a different version which allows for more flexibility, especially for updating the two most useful core apps.

It also has less apps in it, saving space for where the apps are installed, especially since Archos only provided around 275~ MB of space for app installation
And not all apps can move to sd card so any space is helpful
All we need now is the Samsung Galaxy Tab email app ported over. If anyone has any idea please share.
Thanks for posting the info for my gAppsInstaller. I've been away from the game for a few days now doing housework "mods" (=
The only issue remaining that I'm aware of with this app is a certain sub-set of apps that FC (AutoZone, OSMonitor and a few others mentioned in this thread. I haven't had time to research, but whatever the gApps4Archos is doing is making these work ok... I'm thinking its some registration of dll files ('so' files perhaps). I do know it copies 4-5 .so files into the froyo/system directory, but i'm not sure right now if I need to do some type of '.so' file registration with them.

I dont think he created the original gApps4Archos package, he only de-compiled it, added the updated the apps with the newer 2.2 market then vanished.
I think he dropped of the radar after he did the re-package of that app.

Need little help to Install apk from Storage

Hello guys I updated my Atrix to Gingerblur last night... All seems perfect ... Excellent efforts I must say.. I'm having little problem to install applications from Storage, it just gives security error. Tried to find this setting but couldn't ... please if anyone can help ...
Regards..
This should be posted in q&a, right?
Did you re-enable side loading? That's what you need in order to install 3rd party apps.
Moved to proper forum.

How do you go about re-enabling sideloading? I have a similar issue to the OP's (installed gingerbreak and appears to have been successful, but cant sideload), and I thought there would be an entry in the Applications part of the settings menu, but there's nothing there regarding unknown sources.
Edit: Figured it out. @OP - try the script here

[Q] New Nook from store blocking install & APKs

Just purchased a Nook from B&N, unit shows version 1.40, tried following rooting instructiins and unit does not recognize apks. Tried loading update from other thread. Still no success.
Has anyone else experienced new units blocking sideloading that are not 1.41?
I was worried about something like this happening so I've decided to get it from Best Buy instead assuming that newest units would hit B&N and may even be updated to 1.40. I'm just hoping that it will be old stock after christmas since I've been given the choice of B&N gift cards or Best Buy ones.
You have to enabled unknown sources with the tps launcher.
Sorry, I wasn't clear earlier. I was trying to type on the Nook and was frustrated.
OK, So followed the link to install the apk. The Nook comes up with a menu about installing using the Application Installer or Package Installer. Selecting the Application Installer comes up with an Error about not being a recognized file type. Selecting the Package Installer comes up with an error about there being an problem with a package. Neither case comes up with the option to install unrecognized files. (I can't get the exact messages because I don't have it handy right this moment.)
I thought that perhaps they had the updated software just tagged as 1.40, so I downloaded the acclaim_update.zip and placed it on the sd card. Restarted the Nook and it came up showing that it was installing the update. But after the install it restarts and still has my details, thus it did not appear to do the update as expected.
I went through the process several times and experienced the same results.

My wife has a new Nook Tablet. We have opened the .apk from the notification bar at the bottom of the screen, we do not get prompted to allow unknown sources.
We get the same message the other poster is getting about the file being corrupted or not a valid package.

If you miss it once, it seems to be gone forever. Very strange, had the same experience and wasted a few hours.
Do this:
1. Wipe the device and start fresh to get the one time setting back.
a) hit the N button and go to "Settings"
b) select "Device Info"
c) select "Erase & Deregister Device"
This will guide you through wiping the entire device.
Once complete, restart, and it will be like it is out of the box again, fully wiped.
2. Complete the initial setup and when you get to the home screen again, go straight to the browser, then get on over to the thread to download the tgps app again.
a) suggest going to google.com and searching "xda forum nook table root"
b) select the "[Blocks OTA's!] Full root for Nook Tablet. [11/20/11] [Permanent root!]" thread from the search results
c) scroll down and select the tgps app to download.
d) go to the notification window and click on tgps_launcher.apk download complete.
e) from the pop up, select "Package Installer" from the two options. The next screen should have the "Settings" button there that was missing before when it errors out.
Note: writing this all up from memory, so pay close attention to all steps after you click the notification window to use Package Installer. That setting will pop up, and if you miss it, it tends to not pop up again until you clean wipe (in my case).
Hope that helped!

I thought the trick was that you had to sideload using the nook browser? Download the tps launcher apk thru the nook browser then try installing it.
yes, if you use the wrong app installer the first time it is gone forever, use power and N factory restore to restore back to factory and then try sideloading again with the right apk installer the first time.
You donĀ“t have to factory restore your device!!!
Just download the .apk again and open it with "package installer" the first time!
This error occurs only if you try to open it with the app installer first.
Download unsuccessful
I am in pretty much the same situation. When I try to download the apk from http://comptonsoft.com/test/ the download starts but when I click the notification it says "Download unsuccessful". If I tap that, it takes me to the downloads page which is blank. What should I do next?
just purchased a nook tablet for my dad today. will test this out in a couple of days when he roots it. let see if it is 1.4.1 or 1.4.0 and if anything is blocked.

[Q] Nook Tablet 1.4.2 .apk issue

1) I can't get any .apk files to load. I get an error saying "This NOOK cannot read this file..."
2) in NT Settings, I can't get the unknown sources box to stay checked
3) Is there any way to put the android market apps on the home screen?
Thanks for any help!
I believe sideloading apks was blocked in 1.4.1.

There is a Nook Color app in the Android Market that does exactly that.

Most of this stuff is explained elsewhere in the forums . . . I know everybody says that, but believe me, it's true!
To get you started - - you can sideload apps on any rooted Nook:
(1) Get the NT Hidden Settings app (which you have)
(2) Goto "Hacks" - - tap "Unknown Sources Hack" Hit "Back"
(3) Goto "Application Settings" - - toggle "unknown sources"
(4) reboot the Nook
(5) Check in "NT Hidden Settings" . . "Applications Settings" . . to see if "Unknown Sources" is still checked. If not, repeat the steps above.
It's not unusual for people to have to do this 2 or 3 times to get the hack to "stick". Some people swear by toggling each setting on and off a couple times before rebooting. I know it's a PIA, but as far as I know everybody eventually get's it to 'stick' after a number of repeats.
Good news is, once you get Unknown Sources to stick, you won't have to mess with it again unless your restore to stock & re-root.
The "Nook Color Applications" app works well on the Nook Tablet, as noted above. You might also want to look at Go Launcher or ADW Launcher - they give you a new desktop with multiple home screens and other features, but still let you use the stock book reader, Netflix, etc. While some people here are using CM7 or CM9, a lot of people have really tricked-out the stock NT ROM with a 3rd-party launcher. I run mine like that, and I've actually liked it better than CM7.
But I'll switch to CM9 immediately once it's a bit more stable. ;-)
Best of luck!
awesome! I will try tonight. Right now, my two year old wont let me play with "his" nook. lol
Thanks, this forum is the best!
Hey there,
I've been having a similar problem. I recently rooted (using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529553 method), and have been able to access the market and download apps that way, but I'm unable to sideload them. When I try to open any app it says "Unable to install. This application was not able to install onto your device. Please "Archive" and then "Unarchive" the application to try again." I have an SD card inserted, and this error comes up with the Amazon market, and the HomeCatcher app. My unknown sources box is checked though! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to have Google play installed the easiest process to do now is to make a boot able cm SD card. CM10+ is the most recent so I recommend using it. There are also SDC versions of cm7 and 9. These don't affect your internal storage at all so the level of caution for bricking is low.
If you want to look into these SDC ROMs head over to the iamafanof site. There are links to the ROms and further instructions on how to create the cards.

[Q] Download Error

Hey Guys and respected devs,
I have been using my Nook Tablet 16GB(rooted stock) without a problem since january. I have some games, apps etc and so far i have been perfectly happy with it.
Then recently i was browsing the net using opera and came across a video i wished to download. And until then i had no trouble downloading anything videos, pics, apks etc.... But it came as "download failed" . Since then i have tried various methods ... Using other browsers, default browser, download managers, etc but NONE of them can download the files . They don't even start downloading and say a variant of Download error, unable to download etc .
I have combed google and xda and have come up with nothing even remotely close to solving this problem. Please if anyone has any views, opinions, suggestions they are very welcome.
Btw i can download apps and updates and anything of the sort via any type of market and thats about it.
Regards,
Moxdown
well, the first thing that popped into my head was "unknown sources". do you have it turned "on" or has it been clobbered somehow ? this is most strange because you can download but then you cannot download... . are you blocked OTA ? 9.9.9.9 versus 1.0.0.0 ?
hmm, maybe you just need to use 'rom manager' and fix all permissions.
hth.

unknown sources are for app installation
OTA block simply blocks stuff from B&N (same with the version change)
rom manager and permissions have nothing to do with this
hth is not helpful either
@ OP, are these new websites that you are trying to download from by any chance?

yes, unknown sources is not a good guess. yes, lame. my brain was connecting together... the os cooperates from a known source for goods and does not cooperate from an unknown.
i thought OTA and getting an un-wanted binary update from b&n may have scrambled your os.
i was guess a critical permission got flipped to 'read only' and that was causing troubles. so running a permission fix 'may' help. it helps get rid of force closes...
and then hth stands for 'hope this helps', which was my honest desire. but then @Cubanluke88 is just being a smart a$$ ( once again ) . . . but then he's super smart and maybe has your answer.
.
maybe the best answer is 'taking it back to b&n' and having them reset it.
.
when i was asleep, i thought of another answer. maybe you caught a virus ?

unknown sources are for app installation
OTA block simply blocks stuff from B&N (same with the version change)
rom manager and permissions have nothing to do with this
hth is not helpful either
@ OP, are these new websites that you are trying to download from by any chance?

yup im using ota blocker from unknown sources.. and no i haven't caught a virus because i scanned it just a few hours ago just in case ..... Oh? websites like rapidshare, forums etc.... oh and xda of course... still looking through .... i have simply NO IDEA what's wrong...
I don't know if this is possible on the stock OS, but if you can get into manage apps in settings and perhaps clear data on the browsers and try again, that's what I would try next.

EDIT: Tried doing that but to no avail... no difference what so ever. I guess i might just have to flash a brand new rom...
