[Q] Screen quality vs nook color? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Does the laminated ips make a difference?

I don't have the NC to compare it too, but yeah, it should be brighter, better colors and wider viewing angles.
Also, maybe less glare due to VividView coating that they advertise.

Yeah, that what I was hoping. Hey, I think I saw you on engadget.

CNet says it is a bit better. From the review
"I took a look at the Nook Color and Nook Tablet side by side, and while I didn't notice a huge difference, the letters on book covers appeared crisper and images slightly more defined. I also compared two identical screensavers on both screens and found the screensaver on the Nook Tablet looked slightly richer.

[Q]Screen Quality, No More Pentile Pixels, Hows it Look?

so now that some people have this device, how smooth does the text look? no more pentile pixel layout should mean a gorgeous superb looking screen. my mouth is watering at the thought of OLED pixels without the fuzzy text look of the super amoled screens.
how do web pages look? small text, and text in general? is it really noticeable over the first galaxy s and nexus s screen?
To me it looks great

does the screen look more pixelated than on the original galaxy s
it should look LESS pixelated than the galaxy s, but i dont know. that's what i'd like to know though.
wish there was some way to show close up smoothness of the screen to others out on the web thru pics or something, but its hard to do. maybe some close up shots?
you can always put a tiny droplet of water on the screen to magnify the pixels and take a pic.
Hi,
I have asked this question in a few other threads as well but I have some gradient issues which however doesn't appear to be a generic issue as I've not seen anyone else complain about it.
Text is as sharp as you would expect a screen of this size to be (I'm coming from the 4" LCD of X10i). Its slightly less sharp than the LCD but nothing unexpected.
Contrast is superb as are the viewing angles!
My display however shows colour banding as you can see in the grey background of the NeuralNet WP snapshot I uploaded (Sorry for the quality, its my X10)
Anyone else with this issue?
let me just dig out my SLR and take a picture of my screen, I too have "banding" but it's no worse than any other LCD/LED screen I've used.
It's certainly not something I can say I've noticed without actually looking for.

The banding is much worse than on my old Galaxy Spica (24bit LCD), but the overall screen quality is amazing and I don't notice the banding most of the time.

Could it be that people coming from LCD displays are more sensitive to the banding effect?
When I compare the display with my X10i (LCD), the effect is apparent!
Aargh.. the display is so awesome .. why the doggone banding!!!
I played with a SGS2 for 20 minutes today. I was extremely bothered by the pentile on the original, so much that it's one of the main reasons I got rid of it.
Happy to report that there is NO pentile whatsoever on the new version and it looks exactly like a 4.3" 800x480 LCD does, but with SAMOLED Plus colors and contrast Pixels are pixels, like they should be.
I haven't had the Galaxy S, but my girlfriend uses the iphone 4, and I would say the Galaxy S 2 whups the iphone 4 on screen quality ( not resolution ) but over all clarity of images, web pages is alot better ( in my opinion. )
This screen is much better bcause of its real stripe matrix. Compared to a friends iPhone 4 a couple of nights back, particularly in terms of text in the browser. Text on the iPhone is definitely better with its pixel density, but the difference really is not that great at all - he was actually really surprised when I told him the actual resolution, because he thought they looked so close in terms of clarity!

I'd bet a lot of money that it IS only 16 bit color right now. Samsungs other amoled screens were only 16 bit color when they came out on the nexus one etc.
I had a Galaxy S and compared them side by side.
There's no question about it - the S II looks ten times better than the original. There's no more of the graininess, and despite the slightly lower pixel density it appears sharper as the fuzzy edges caused by PenTile are gone.
Colours are also smoother since the slight graininess is gone.

How does the screen compare to galaxy tab 10.1

Hey Guys,
I know the prime packs a tegra 3 chip but how does the screen compare to the Samsung galaxy tab 10.1?
Thanks
From Engadget...
What you have here is a 10-inch, 1280 x 800 display that manages a stunning brightness maxing out at 600 nits, handily topping what you'll find on most laptop panels and more than 50 percent higher than your average tablet panel. The luminosity is quite noticeable, and the contrast too, with deep darks and vibrant brights. However, color reproduction seemed a bit flat, with whites tending toward yellow and brighter hues coming up short.

There is no comparison. It's the best display out there hands down.
"However, color reproduction seemed a bit flat, with whites tending toward yellow and brighter hues coming up short."
how is this be the best display out there?
unless its someone who had both device side by side, it wouldnt be trustworthy as I'm curious too
i played with both briefly at gamestop, and the TFP display is much nicer than the tab10.1's.
they have similar color reproduction, but the prime's display is much brighter and seems more crisp.
not to knock the tab's display, as it's quite nice too, the prime's is just nicer.
i've owned a TF101, a tab10.1, a gtab, and an ipad1, so i've had prolonged usage for multiple displays, but side by side, i've only looked at the two for maybe 20 mins, so it's just a gut reaction kind of thing, but suffice to say, you will not be dissapointed in the prime's panel.

Several major reviewers said so. Also said best Android tablet out there. Some even went as far to say better than ipad2. It has one of the highest resolutions out now and has brightest display of all tablets. Yes, most did side by side comparisons and prime won. Prime uses more natural realistic looking colors vs. saturated cartoon looking colors of ipad 2 or galaxy.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I have heard only good things about the display on the Prime from most reviewers- Most said that it was the best screen yet, on any tablet. The only one which I found to be somewhat perplexing is from Techradar:
"The Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime is not as bright, colourful, or crisp as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, so if you plan to watch movies and view photos routinely, the Samsung is the better tablet.
In comparing the exact same videos and photos on both devices, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime has a slightly dull and washed out look. The Apple iPad 2 looks marginally better than the Prime (they both use IPS displays) but not as vivid as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
Clearly, Asus decided to make functionality a higher priority than superior colour reproduction."
There is a french web site (www.lesnumeriques.com) which reviewed the Transformer prime last week.
What's to know about thoses guys is that they review every kind of displays with a lot of care. They have probes, sensors, benchmark and every tools needed to measure how good a display really is. In a preview article they reviewed every tablet display on the market. They said the Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 screen, despite having unrealistic colors (artificially brighter and over saturated, general consommers love it) was overall the best display.
This time their verdict is simple: The Transformer Prime take the crown of the best Tablet display to date.
The review can be found here : http://www.lesnumeriques.com/tablette-tactile/asus-eeepad-tranformer-prime-clavier-p12303/test.html
Of course it's in french but i can translate you some interesting fact about this display.
The contrast ratio is 1224:1 it's the best amount all tablet, the original transformer was 814:1 (wich is bad) and the ipad2 is around 950:1.
It means deeper blacks and brighter whites.
The color accuraty isn't the best: It scores a 7,6 compare to the 4 of the RIM playbook. 3 being and excellent score. It means color aren't exactly on part with reality (not a big deal for a tablet if you ask me)
On the other side, the color temperature is quite excellent (5467 Kelvin) you won't get a weird blue or red display.
The brightness is fantastic, In normal IPS mode at maximum brightness you get a score of 387 nits wich is already amoung the best of its kind, but once you get into Super IPS+ mode, you crank up the brightness to 619 nits ! Which is on part with what Asus advertissed (over 600 nits) making this display the brighter ever made. What it means is that despit having a glossy glass cover the TFP is actually usable in daylight (the TF101 isn't, belive me, I tried). Of course it won't be as good as a E-ink screen but it s still a great improvement.
The "response time" (I'm guessing the translation here) of the screen is so-so with a 23 ms response time. It's worse than the ipad2's 17 ms and it's still miles away from a classic desktop screen (which are around 4-2 ms).
But Asus is displaying a black frame every 3 frames to make it looks smoother to the user eyes. It's a commun trick which works. You can actually catch this black frame on some recorded movie of the display, (like here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sk7t5ux8xPE) But you won't see it with your naked eyes.
And finaly the viewing angle are okay. No loss untill around 75° and then less and less contrasted color.
So, Maybe the Transformer Prime's Super IPS+ display doesn't look as cool as the Samsung or ipad2 one, but it doesn't mean it's worse. It means Asus doesn't cheat like Samsung and Apple do by showing you more eye pleasing pictures. Don't be fooled by marketing technique, we all love AMOLED screens cause they're awesome, but we all know how wrong they are. Well same story here.

Somebody should have asked this earlier, but why do you want to know? If you're buying your first tablet now, it makes no sense to get a high-end single-core that costs as much as the Prime (unless you want 3/4G). You're better off getting the Prime and as the reviewers have said the display is fine and really excels at being used in daylight.
If you already have a G-Tab there's no burning need to replace it so you'd be better off waiting for the pre-order madness to end and comparing for yourself side-by-side in a store. But if displays are your thing you should wait a couple of weeks any way. Both Acer and Lenovo are expected to announce quad-core tablets with1900x1200 resolution displays at CES on January 11th and the Acer's going to have 3/4G (if you care). They're both supposed to be available Q1 according to leaks. They'll also have more RAM (2GB) and ship with ICS. If you can wait even longer, Samsung's expected to announce a next-gen Exynos tablet with a whopping 2560x1600 resolution to compete with the iPad3. Asus has no competitive advantage with display technology as they and everyone else buy panels from other manufacturers. Samsung and Toshiba are the only two tablet manufacturers that build their own panels. Until the war, Samsung was Apple's primary display provider (they're moving to Sharp).
The Galaxy tab does run Tegra 2 dual-core processor. I'm actually using one right now. Screen is much brighter then your Xoom or the original Transformer and Acer A500 imho.

The colors on all Samsung displays, SAMOLED and LCD, tend to be exaggerated which most people equate with "pop." Some people like it, some don't. They changed the display design on the 10.1 in October and actually toned the color down a bit to make it seem more natural.

It will be a awesome display as we may believe the reviews, better then the iPad screen. When its out, go see it for youself and check it, nothing more to say about it untill its out.
Put a fancy colorfull wallpaper and a high brightness and the Prime screen will be more than enough to make a good impression. The IPS screen of the TF101 is already pretty good at that.
It's the same size
I've compared the following pretty closely in day-to-day use:
1. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to my OG Transformer
2. Samsung Epic 4G Touch to my Motorola Photon
My conclusion, at least based on these two devices, is that if you like blown-out, over-saturated colors then you'll like Samsung screens. If you like more natural colors, then you won't. I like the screens on the Transformer and Photon better for some things than the Samsung screens, including ebook reading (the Samsungs tend to have colder (i.e., more blue) "whites," which provide less contrast and therefore a worse reading experience).
Note that the E4GT does have much better video than the Photon, but the same isn't true regarding the GT 10.1 and the TF.
It is a gorgeous screen believe me. I had the Gtab and this is brighter definitely plus very pretty

Screen Contrast from flyer to low

Hi,
i think the screen contrast from the flyer is to low be a brilliant display.
What is your opinion?
The contrast looks fine to me. I think it's sharp and clear, but not as good as Ipad's display. It's better than almost all Android tablets.
i think the screen looks good and I keep it on low brightness. I do increase the screen brightness when watching video.
Love the display. No problems here.
Sent from GrandAdmiral's phone using Tapatalk.
The contrast is on my my View is noticeably better than on my Kindle Fire, particularly when reading plain text. OTOH, though, the color balance is a little off. The display has an overall yellowish tinge. Not a fatal flaw, but definitely noticeable.
seems great to me,no tinges i can notice and movies etc are all crystal clear.
mind i dont use a screen protector anymore as that blurred it a bit and the glass seems virtually unmarkable.
overall its the best screen ive had and have a lot of laptops etc.
home veiwing is by the hdmi onto a 42" screen and is great also.

disappointed with screen

I just sold my transformer prime infinity...and coming from that, im disappointed with the screen. How could a lower resolution screen on the prime look sharper than the one on the nexus?
Well I was just looking around here and I don't have a Nexus 10. I got a Galaxy Note 10.1 and from my experience the picture matters a lot.
I mean there are a lot of wallpaper sites with ultra HD and optimized wallpapers for retina display, but the same resolution is not always the same sharpness. some are crappy cropped or zoomed.
Use quickpic to set your background picture. The stock gallery app sometimes crops the pictures false.
And pictures with a resolution below the maximum resolution will always look a bit crappy. that means that when you are using a fullHD picture, which was nice for transformer prime, it can look less sharp on a display with higher resolution like nexus 10
I too come from Prime and there is no contest, this screen is sharper than Prime by miles.
How stuff looks will depend on what you are seeing.
If you have set regular wallpaper, it will look all blurry thanks to resolution. Even so called HD wallpapers will look blurry on this. You need to go search for wallpapers for MacBook Pro retina and use those on this tablet using quickpic. None of the apps from Android market have good wallpapers that are having native resolution of this tablet.
Text is sharp and crisp on this.
Most arcade games are not optimised for this screen and look terrible or blurry. That is not screen's fault.
Desktop web pages look nice full and crisp. So only real issue of lack of sharpness comes into picture when the content is not ready for screen. That includes apps, images and games.
I also come from Prime.
I wouldn't say the Prime screen looks sharper than the Nexus 10. Reading text on the N10, for example, the resolution is really amazing, very nice on the Nexus 10.
The colors and brightness and blacks is a different story. The Prime had those 3 much nicer than the Nexus 10. I loved playing Marble Blast on the Prime, the graphics looked amazingly vivid. On the Nexus 10 they appear as meh.
Its the prime infinity. Drastic difference. What a shame. Gonna put the nex up 4sale.

It's mainly because a lot of apps and mobile sites and such aren't made for the resolution. It's made for a smaller resolution, so to make up for that, the apps, mobile sites, and whatever else are all upscaled to fit the 2560x1600 resolution. While upscaling allows you to view things bigger, it will also make everything else a slightly blurry. There are upscaling algorithms to make it look better, but basically it's impossible to make upscaled images look as good as a native 2560x1600 image.
A 720p 10" screen (Note 10.1) will show a 720p video the cleanest because the video outputs a ratio of exactly 1:1 pixels.
A 1080p 10" screen (TF prime) will show a 720p video a bit blurrier because the video outputs a ratio of 2.25:1 pixels.
A 1440p 10" screen (N10) will show a 720p video the blurriest because the video outputs a ratio of 4:1 pixels. (I know the N10 has a 1600p screen, it's just to make calculations slightly easier)
Now when using a 1080p video, a 720p screen will show no improvement because the screen can't output those extra pixels.
When using a 1080p screen, the screen will look sharper than that 720p screen because you have more information. Consider watching TV of a 10x10 resolution vs 1920x1080 resolution. The 1920x1080p resolution will look far better
Once again, the 1440p will look slightly blurry.
Now when you use a 1440p video, you can probably guess which screen will output that video the cleanest.
So basically, this high resolution thing is good mainly for texts as of right now since nothing is really optimized for a screen beyond 1080p.
Anyone who thinks its possible for a much lower resolution screen to be sharper is a fool. This screen is absolutely dazzling. Though content displayed is obviously going to have an affect.
And just to shove some numbers in your face:
N10 - 300.24 PPI (2560x1600 @ 10.055") 4,096,000 pixels (78% MORE)
Prime Infinity - 226.42 PPI (1920x1200 @ 10") 2,304,000 pixels
That's a huge difference.

I actually have to disagree with you a little bit here. 720p video should look just as good on the Nexus 10 as it does on the Note 10.1. 1280x800 times 2 is 2560x1600. Because of that each pixel of a 720p video will take up exactly 4 pixels on the Nexus 10; however those 4 pixels on the N10 are the same area that would be a single pixel on the Note 10.1. This is a clean ratio. On the TF700 you got to 1920x1200 which is 1.5 times 1280x800. This is not a whole ratio and means that pixels of a 720p video will take up between 1 and 4 pixels on the TF700 display (determined by a fancy algorithm for scaling images).
The Nexus 10 playing 1080p video should have about the same blurriness as the TF700 playing 720p video.

You can most likely blame that on googles new font rendering in 4.2. They turned down the font hinting a lot. It would be nice if it was configureable like in Linux. It the same way on the galaxy nexus and nexus 7 in 4.2.

The problem with this screen is calibration and black levels.
Colors are extremely washed, red is a poor red, same with blue. This totally kills the screen. If you compare this with ipad screen, you will cry. Not because of viewing angles, not because of brightness, because of colours. Google was really smart when they decided not to calibrate their screens, same with nexus 4, while other OEMs take care of this thing deeply.
And black, despite numbers of the reviews, its quite poor, mostly because every single unit has light bleed (some with a hard mess, others this problem is smaller)
As a result, a top screen with such a poor implementation. This could be best screen in an tablet ever, and now it is a mediocre one, with many pixels, but nothing else. And it's a ****ing software issue, thats so sad.

Yep, meant the calibration thing, it's about software. Black thing is because a bad manufacturing process, probably because of low price tag., or crappy manufacturers.

Wow...that blows. Maybe we need a 4.1 ROM??
I saw light bleed as soon as I turned my N10, but that's not the reason I just called to return it -- it was the uneven brightness. The top 1/2 inch of the screen is noticeably darker than the rest of it -- not visible when watching a movie or playing games, but very distracting when surfing and reading books, especially in portrait mode.
Since I haven't seen anyone else complain about this issue, I'm hopeful the replacement will be better.
Yep, I completely agree with one of the previous posters, this is definetly a black level issue. I put the iPad with a Retina Display right against a Nexus 10 both playing the same 1080i MKV. The iPad clearly won.
I still like the Nexus 10 a lot and I find it very comfortable to use because of how thin it is and how light it is, but to improve the product I think Google missed it some here. They could lowered the resolution considerably (1920 x 1080 is more than fine), improved on black level, and used the same processor. The lower resolution would have allowed that processor to scream since it wouldn't have been as taxed to interpolate so many pixels.
I don't know if it is a software issue or not, but if it is I really hope Google releases a fix. If there was a way to adjust Gamma or Contrast it might help considerably.

There's no way on earth text (or other computer generated content like the UI and icons) will look better on a 147PPI display (Prime) vs. 224PPI (TF700) or 300PPI (N10). The reason is as 404 Error did a great job of explaining is that text is a 1:1 match pixel wise; the more pixels the sharper the image. Photos and videos display even the clearest content over multiple pixels so the advantage of a higher PPI becomes less pronounced. And the human eye (even yours) can't resolve sharpness over 229PPI beyond 15". So, your 20/20 eyes are decieving you. The N10 has less contrast and isn't as bright as older displays so that might be what you're reacting to.

Mine has this problem and so do at least a few others. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007676
I'm still debating if it annoys me enough to justify an exchange.

is the display supposed to be this dull?

i got the huawei mate 10 pro specifically for the thin bezels and oled display with no rounded corners or rounded screen and i have to say i absolutely hate the display, it reminds me of the samsung galaxy 4 years ago, the colors are so dull that my Xperia xz1 has noticably crisper more vibrant colors putting them side by side makes the huawei look like a joke where like 50% of it's colors are reduced especially with green, is this due to the preapplied screen protector will there be a big difference if it was removed? frankly i am shocked at how bad this screen is to my Eyes i don't love the screen of the s9+ either most oled panels appear very warm to me i think the note 9 is the only panel that hasn't from the brief experience i had with it but the s9+ is still miles better, i have put the color to as cold as i possibly can but it still appears so warm and yellow, i have my Xperia xz1 set to the extra vibrant mode with blue set to 150 so i prefer cold colors over anything, but seriously the color is so dull on the huawei so dull and dissappointing, the Xperia uses ips the huawei uses oled, ips is not supposed to be crisper and more vibrant.
Uhh you do know there's a color profile option under Display--->Color option right? I suggest checking that out cuz this post is pretty ridiculous
Plus the XZ1 has an HDR display according to the spec sheets so you're comparison to crispness is basically out of whack
