To flash or not to flash that is the question! - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was getting ready to flash one of the custom roms on my new tab but wasn't sure if I should. I went ahead and rooted but then after reading it seems like people are having more trouble on the custom roms. After trying several on my vibrant that worked wonders I thought maybe I could get more out of my tab but I don't want to make it worse. I'm having lag issues and sound issues on the factory rom so I was just wondering if I should start trying different roms on it. Any impute is appreciated!!

If you think you can, do it.
I did it too, just to get rid of the TouchWiz UI - Its a wonderful experience now, much better and smoother than before.

If that's the case wouldn't you just use a different home launcher?

Do it! I did it within a day of getting my Tab 10.1 - haven't looked back.

No, as the TouchWhiz Experience goes much deeper, including Settings, Browser, Calendar, Contacts Apps etc. etc.
Although I have to say that Galaxy Task 5.2 is the smoothest ROM I had until now, and it is TW.
A custom ROM will alter your experience extremely, trust me - I bought the tablet mainly for annotating PDFs during lectures (... and surfing the web ).
If you'd like to I'll make a short youtube vid to show you what is different, and to showcase the speed improvements - I won't reflash to stock, but you can easily compare by doing the same things on your own tab.

I'd like to see that vid

Sounds good I'll probably do it today after work. I'm ready to get rid of the lag issues that have been driving me crazy. Thanks for the helpful info!

you can also try ADW launcher. My p7500 feels much smoother with it. You have to buy the ex version but i think its worth the money.

Motorola ATRIX 4g roms

I was just trying to get some good suggestions on which rims are good to use with my Motorola ATRIX
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
They are all great and stable. Read through the DEV section and do some research. Find one that suits your needs, then flash away. Just make sure you are unlocked and using the correct recovery. Good luck!
ROMs are like pokemons - you need to try them all yourself.

This is no diss to the developers because I very much appreciate their work!
And I haven't tried all the ROMs
Still, for my suite of apps, for the smoothest and most reliable op of the phone and for the longest battery life..I am back to stock. I have frozen apps, I am running the .97 radio (which has made a huge difference to me in reliability and throughput) but I am stock. Mainly, I had issue with the various incarnations of the Faux kernel and always wound up with lost widgets (I like my widgets I tried all the suggestions and still, at some point I would lose widgets with the kernel. Since this is the basis of most ROMs that did it for me (and it has to be the kernel since I had the problem on the stock ROM with the kernel).
Good luck...it is easy to go back to stock if you don't like the various ROMs.
I intend to try CM7 later on when the Faux kernel and the integration with Setcpu (both cores) is resolved and CM7 has webtop integration (I use the lapdock every day).
I've used a few of the ROM's out there and right now I am on HomeBase version 2 with Faux's latest kernel. I will say that the version of HomeBase is pretty close to stock but it has a bunch of enhancements (zipalign, memory tweaks, etc). My suggestion is to get to flashing and see what suits you. What I like you may hate. CM7 is worth a try as well and I may switch over when it become official (or I may wait for MIUI).
As for the widget issue...fix permissions fixed it for me, hundreds of restarts and I still have my widgets.
You should check out the dev section...good ROM's and good reading!!!

I recommend 22 inch chrome rims depending on what you like.
If you are looking form suggestions for ROMs I'd suggest CM7.

Browser

Hi all, I just got my Galaxy Tab a few days ago (7510) and as much as I love Samsung devices, I simply hate their software. Just as Ive done with every smartphone Ive ever owned, I immediately started searched for as close to stock as I could get.
So I found the NoName vanilla rom, which I love by the way, its pretty much pure Honeycomb as far as I can tell, only the Browser.apk it comes with does not have a Labs section in the settings, and the Chrome bookmarks sync does not work; Google Browser doesnt show up underneath Accounts and Sync.
Ive tried pushing other Browser.apks from other ROMs, and they just dont seem to work. If anyone has an answer for me, Id really appreciate it! I cant live without those thumb controls or my chrome bookmarks!
Flash tasks 3.2 ROM. That's all you need to know.

1. have you tried the Extreme Stock Experience ROM? (i havent but i know it exists)
2. GalaxyTask 6.1 + b00sted's ICS/Jetstream theme is the best experience you will get on your tab... its debloated and has HW acceleration enabled... its the smoothest and fastest... at least give it a try before you shoot it down just because of TW... its more like TaskWiz if you think about it
The custom ROMs that are created on this forum are nothing like what Samsung gives you.
I think the browser of otyer roms dont work directly because of framework changes... Im not sure abt it im not a dev but thats what i know

I too hate Touch Wiz and I've never kept it on my Tab for long because of issues with lag. I've used every stock Honeycomb 3.1 ROM.
I got a GSII Skyrocket and Touch Wiz sorta grew on me, so when the update to 3.2 came around, I decided to try Task's new ROM because In Paris was the best Touch Wiz ROM I had ever experienced.
With Task's latest (v6.1) 3.2 ROM and b00sted's latest (v2.4) ICS theme, I am absolutely blown away.
NO lag, at all. Ever. Period.
Its awesome with the ICS theme and its very refined.
Just try it, you're only a restore away from whatever you're currently running, so there's nothing to lose!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
Yeah just wait around doing nothing when you could be on task's rom in a matter of minutes and thinking why the hell did I not do this sooner.
you guys exaggerate too much about the way you hate touchwiz
Thanks for all the snarky responses, when my question was a simple one. I've tried Task, not for me. And yes, I realize that it is an undetermined time, Ive had the i9000 since launch so god knows I know what waiting for a Cyanogenmod release is like.

ICScrew'd VS ICS'd OUT V9

For people who have used both which do you think is better?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
Just try both of them, im on ICScrewed but im about to try ICS'd out today.
I've used both but really don't know if there is a difference. I want peoples opinion. Kinda a poll I suppose. Battle of the ICS themed ROMs
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
I use ICS'd Out, but they are both quite similar- JKay Mod, TW 4.5, ICS themes. I tried ICScrewed, but I still got the wifi issues, and I'm back on ICS'd Out. One big thing to think about is that for a while there, Task was updating ~every 2 days, which was a fair bit quicker than ICScrewed.
I really don't like ICScrewed because it defaults google music as the default music app. After replacing it with the stock music app, google music no longer installs from the market.
Still need to try out the other ROM.

There is no better choice. Everyone has a different opinion on "best" try them both and decide which you prefer.

Question for the thunderbolt community

Hey everyone, I am going to be trading some services (a mechanic is doing my breaks in exchange for me rooting and custom romming his lady's phone) and would like to know what your opinion is on the best thunderbolt ROMs available? She is currently on stock software and hates absolutely everything about her phone and how it behaves.
What would you guys recommend? I'm looking for functionality, reliability, battery life and the smallest amount of software bugs as possible.
Tweaked stock ROMs? AOSP? CM7 or 9? I know nothing about the thunderbolt community and would greatly appreciate any info you can give me.
Thank you everyone

Leaving it on a stock rom unless you plan on maintaining the rom for her..If she has no idea what shes doing then dont cause a headache for yourself, with techs its nothing to change out a rom, or if it gets buggy, well you get the point... the best thing would be a factory reset, or check the memory on the phone she prob has to many apps, install the apps from the sd card to free up the memory cuz im on a stock rom and its way fast, great battery, most of all the battery issues are from apps..just trying to save you a down the road..
I would go to the dev section of this forum and look at the ROMs and see what catches your eyes its opinion over opinion when saying stock is better than custom tons, I myself like custom roms because you can choose a wide variety of tweaks etc etc

LiquidRom 3.2 and use Rom Tool box built in to download pink theme, use built in theme chooser and apply theme, the get a pink keyboard skin and appy. Btw you can customize splash screen and bootanimation to her liking with Rom Tool box too. No bugs for me.

You want no problems use zues.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Definitely a stock based ROM, like Zues. AOSP's battery life isn't as good as Sense (to no fault of the amazing devs of course).
I also suggest Imoyeson's leankernel 5.1.0GB in battsaver mode. Amazing performace with amazing battery life.
I also recommend Zues. ran it for a month straight no problems. only switched roms to see what else is out there
BAMF 1.11 with kernel+++ and turn off task manager at startup. Since I've installed the latest version of BAMF I've had zero fcs, great battery life and good speed. I'm a tech all day long with Windows PC and understand little about behind tor scene android functions. BAMF seems most reliable and low maintenance. Remember every phone responds different to the same os. It's just like gas every kia responds different to bp gas.

Sent from my unrooted, extremely bloated Galaxy S4 via tapatalk 2.
shockingly I'm using TouchWiz. My only complaints with it are the inability to flick away desktop icons, no play store in the top right corner, and the folders are annoying. Why not just leave the stock folder function?
I use Apex Launcher overtop of TW which gives me the customization i want but still maintains all the Samsung functionality that is really pretty cool. After coming from AOSP Roms on my Gnex, its kind of a nice change of pace.
I rooted and removed some bloatware and verizon stuff I knew I didn't need.
Installed novalauncher and called it a day. I plan to stay with the stock kernel. I might be a little jaded coming from having to reformat my last few phones every few months once I started flashing roms.
I am completely stock, no root yet. Just testing her out to see if I am going to keep it first. Battery life and signal issues plagued my last two phones, so those are what I'm testing. So far so good.
Can someone explain what TouchWiz is? I don't see it anywhere on my S4. I'm coming from a Thunderbolt.

I'm stock rooted running Nova Launcher. I froze most all the bloat I don't use and I'm loving this phone! Battery life is great and I have zero lag (especially since I came from a Moto Bionic.)
Im stock rooted running Nova launcher as well. Removed all the bloatware and have zero lag. This phone is amazing. What a difference coming from Gnex. I use svoice alot and it actually works well for what I use it for.

I am getting itchy flash fingers though... Im reading we can use other carrier ROMs as long as we loki it.... May try that or....
CleamROM dev just got his VZW S4 today, and his ROMs are the best of the best, so I may just wait for his. ...

Rooted but still on stock ROM, using GoLauncher on top of TouchWiz, Swiftkey dark theme keyboard, haven't removed/frozen bloat yet (but will soon, just rooted yesterday). I'll be eventually loading a custom ROM but waiting out the alpha/beta builds.
Really enjoying the two finger swiping/gestures, though i don't use them much. Comes in handy on the notification bar for quick toggles, and Toucher is a pretty cool app especially when themed properly.
Not a fan of all the notification clutter, but thats just my OCD kicking in.
SmartStay/SmartScroll stopped working after day one, not sure why, but seems kind of a hokey feature anyway...
I agree, the tweaked folders are annoying, enjoyed my previous ICS folders using DeckReloaded on my EVO.
By and far my favorite phone that I have owned.

So I tried it. It booted into the OS just fine, but the phone process was force closing so bad I couldn't get though the setup. I would type a character then it would freeze. Just lost patience, lol. I had backed up my APN but could not get through the setup to restore it.
But what this tells us is that porting ROMs will potentially be pretty easy.
