Screen Color Issue - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I'm super annoyed with the support I have received from B&N. I purchased both Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet. I wanted to use it just as carry around portfolio. The color cast issue on the Nook Tablet was so yellow. Everything I watched or put on the tablet had a slight yellow cast. So I went to the store and showed them they said it wasn't a issue there. Probably cause the lighting in the B&N stores is terrible to begin with. Regardless they let me swap out the tablet. Came home same issue.

I'm not noticing that on mine. Side note: Who's the girl? Lol.

No one ever discussed in any review the color comparison that is between the two tablets. The screen is a lot sharper on the Nook Tablet with less glare. The kindle fire has a slight blue tint with a more muddier contrast. Watching two movies side by side same movie the Nook tablet you can see more of the fine detail in the video compared to the Kindle Fire.

As a graphic designer a portable portfolio is part of the reason i got the Nook Tablet as well. If im not mistaken the nook and the ipad use the same type of display, so i dont think you are going to get a much better screen any where else. You are probably only noticing the yellow cast because you are looking at the blueish KF right next to it.
----Edit-------
Personaly I think the nook screen looks ritcher next to the KF.

Could you please post the original image of the woman?

On the posted thumbnails, the skin tone is better on the Nook - and a whole lot less glare.

I noticed this too on my NT. Compared to my GT10 it's much warmer color.

Here is the original

Yep, the Nook Tablet has a very warm color balance. Noticed it right away. Compared to anything else - even the Nook Color - it's very noticeable. I'm a photographer and was also planning to use this for images so if it can't be adjusted, it's probably going back. Except for this flaw, the screen is really outstanding.

I envy your job.

The NT looks like it has a more natural saturation, the KF looks washed-out.

They are both turned up to the same brightness. The contrast might be a little more dark in the KF. The NT is actually the same saturation just a whole different white balance. The laminated screen does stop the glare which looking in a dark room at both tablets its not as noticeable. I have the GSII and the saturation is way off but still a great device.

IF the Nook Tablet gets rooted, there is an Android color calibration app (root is required for this unfortunately as a separate system zip must be flashed in recovery beyond just the app) which can likely be used to tweak the WB. I used it on the original Nexus One and others have used it on more recent Samsungs which have root. Here is the thread:

The bootloader is still locked so I believe that means you can't load another rom or boot into a recovery program. You need to start up in a recovery program to install part of the calibration software into the system by flashing there before the apk is loaded. So, I think we need the bootloader unlocked to do all this which we are still awaiting.

I think you may have a real issue. I'm getting ready to return my second unit due to over-saturated screen colors. I wouldn't have noticed that they were off if it weren't for the fact that I had another Nook that looked so much better. I've also seen the screen revert to normal for a session, but returns to poor quality when shut off and turned back on.
I've been using the welcome to Nook video as my standard. She should not look like she just had a bad bronzing job (almost orange). If she does, you may have an issue.
I've also noticed some very faint horizontal artifacting. Like a bad connection somewhere.

What I'm seeing on mine is just a warm color balance, not over-saturated color, lines or anything else. A quick way to see this is to view a black and white image on the Nook Tablet and compare that with another screen, preferably a calibrated one. On the Nook Tablet, the black and white image will look brown to sepia toned versus neutral gray tones.

Is the monitor really that bad? Deciding to get one

I am debating between the G tablet and Nook Color since price is similar. I went to Office Depot and looked at the G tablet, though the ceiling lights in there give some glare, it was hard to make an overall judgement on the screen in there. I don't think I found it that bad. I can see the horsepower this has over the Nook color might be something I will like, I like tinkering with stuff (my pc overclock, my old windows mobile 6.5 wing overclocked etc) so modding I am not scared of.
I read about people disliking the screen.. Is it really that bad? From you owners, does it bother sometimes or is it really no big deal?
I am thinking I will use it on plane flights and in hotels, as well as leisure etc.. i do want to play games though and general multimedia.
Also are there some screen protectors and cases that fit it?
Replies much appreciated. Thanks!
Yes, the viewing angles are a pain to deal with. Depending on how you plan on looking at it will determine how you hold it (landscape) either camera up or camera down. The stock rom won't let the screen rotate so you will have to find one that does. I'm typing on it now, btw.
Back to the screen; the colors get washed out easily and gets frustrating. Also, the touchscreen sensitivity is ****ty. Gtablet for dummies has 2 fixes for this, though, so that's a start.
I just really hope Google releases source on honeycomb and viewsonic releases the drivers to take advantage of the tegra2
Thanks for the quick response, how about with a screen protector? I read that it helps.
I ordered a screen protector off from ebay. I haven't had any trouble with it. However I don't believe it has improved the screen at all.
An interesting note the package on the protector said it was for the Acer Iconia, but it still fits (quite tightly) with a cutout for the camera. I'm not sure if the dimensions are exactly the same... Perhaps someone can confirm this?

Yes, it's really that bad. It's a netbook screen, which means its meant to be viewed dead on center left/right, in landscape, at (and this is the real killer) about a 30 degree angle.
In dark settings its fine, but you have to hold it (no reading flat on a table, unless you like leaning over the table) and no portrait reading, so using it as an ebook is, er, less than satisfying.
I suggest you NEVER look at a real tablet screen that was actually designed for easy viewing from many different angles.
Other than that, it's fantastic.
My gTab's viewing angles are just as bad as everyone else's and I rarely care. Also, when the kids and I are watching YouTube or other videos, the tablet is in landscape and three of us can watch side by side with only minor impact due to the viewing angles.
I would rather have an IPS screen but for me price is a big factor; then again, I just bought a used table saw at GoodWill for $37, so that's the kind of shopper I am. If you don't mind the viewing angles go for it, but better tablets are always coming out so today's IPS tablets may be marked down very soon.
have any of you tried this screen protector? in the reviews, people where saying it helped alot. http://www.amazon.com/XtremeGUARD©-...5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312573112&sr=1-5
And some said the skinomi helped http://androidforums.com/gtablet-tips-tricks/320532-improved-viewing-angle.html

Hilarious and pretty damn close to what I think. However, I use mine on a stand at just the right angle and have no issues.
Hypertek
If you do want the thing to be a capable book reader, get the Nook. It is flashable with better ROMs and is designed for ebooks.
I originally thought I would use my Gtablet for them, but learned better about 10 pages into the first one.
My Kindle is perfect for it though as is the Nook.
BTW, I got the Skinomi full skin (woodgrain) and it came with the screen protector. Works great and looks amazing.
I've own/ed both a nook color and a gtab. The nook screen is nicer. Plain and simple. Better viewing angles, the picture seems more vivid, its just all around nice. That being said, I still sold my nook color for a gtab and would make the same decision again in a heartbeat.
The thing is, if you want an ereader, the nook color is the clear winner. But if you want that tablet experience (like I did) and are looking to the nook color for it, its going to leave you wanting. I rooted my nc, threw CM7 on it, over clocked it, remapped the hardware buttons, everything you can tinker with I did. But as great as it was, its still never really felt like a real tablet. I enjoyed the portability, but the 7inch screen felt a bit cramped.
The Gtablet on the other hand gives you the better tablet experience. Yes the viewing angles on the screen are bad, but honestly, its never once been a concern of mine. You have to hold the tablet anyway right? So whats the difference between rotating your wrist a couple of degrees to get a better viewing angle? Its not as big of a problem as everyone makes it out to be. The only time i could see it becoming a problem is if you're laying in bed and want to lay it relatively flat on your stomach or something, then the screen would cause issues. The angles are as bad as people say, but its really not a problem in day to day use. When I use a device I lookat it straight on, so the viewing angle doesn't bother me. I don't understand how everyone seems to be using their tablet in a super tilted manner. Plus if you buy a Clip Case, you can adjust the viewing angle when you set your tablet down on a table or something. I also bought a tablet stand for when I want to use the gtab as an extra monitor in portrait mode.
My point is, if the screen is the ONLY deciding factor between the two for you, then you should go with the nook color. But in all honesty, if you look at each product overall, the gtab is a much better choice if you want a tablet.
You just have to make sure you get rid of the crap software that comes loaded on the gtab for one of the roms here (gtabcomb is really nice). How that piece of crap software was allowed to make it to market is beyond me. Whoever is in charge of quality control needs to be fired yesterday.
thanks, I appreciate all responses. pyro6128 that is just what I wanted to hear.
Yeah I went to bestbuy and looked at the NC and then drove down to office depot and looked at the gtablet and thought it wasn't bad.
Im sure it will give me some good entertainment as well on flights. Just gotta see how soon my dad can order it for me. he owes me some money and I said just get me a tablet . =)
My pc is overclocked, videocard is volt modded and watercooled. I don't mind putting in a little work =)
Since I have 3 tablets and one being a NC running CM7, I can compare the NC and G-tablet closely.
The screen on the NC is sharp and vivid, the only reason I got another 10" tablet is the viewing area.
The screen on the gtablet is not as sharp as the NC and the color is not as vivid, viewing angle is worst then my other 2 tablets, but it is fast and big so I use it instead of my laptop for net access while I am in Starbuck and out of the house. The NC is what I use sitting on the sofa or in bed

[Q] White Glow on Dark Screen

I just got my refurbed Tab yesterday. I've owned many tablets over the last year, but I've never experienced a soft kind of glowing effect on dark parts of the screen (like in a dark scene in a video, or even the bottom control bar) when viewed at any angle at all. The image almost becomes difficult to see unless you're looking straight ahead. I only notice this when there's little to no ambient light in the room (which is when 90% of my tablet usage is- reading or watching a movie in bed).
I compared with my touchpad in the same scenario and while there was a *very* slight glow, it wasn't nearly as bad as on the gt 10.1.
I found next to nothing on Google about this. Does anyone else get this, or do I possibly have a bad refurb? It's a shame because I'm completely in love with it otherwise...

Is it coming from the sides? If so, it's LCD screen bleed. It unfortunately happens with backlit LCD panels. It doesn't appear to be too common with the Tab as I haven't seen it mentioned before. I'd send it in for repair while it's under warranty. They changed the screen design in October and you'll get it back with a better display then it has currently.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
No, it's not from the sides. There's no bleeding. It's on the screen itself. It's almost like kind of a ghostly white glow on top of the dark colors on the screen. A shimmering effect, maybe? I'm not sure how else to describe it.

Hm. I guess i'm not explaining it well.
While it is on the screen itself, it's only when you tilt the device to the viewing angle isn't straight on.

I just compared my G-Tab with an ASUS Transformer, and it was still there on the Transformer, but not as bad as the G-Tab.

Anyone have both a TF101 and a TFP?

Does anyone have both the TF 101 and the prime? I had gotten a replacement from Asus, and I noticed the screen would wash out a lot more on an angle compared to my TF 101, So asus replaced it (the first replacement was a C30 and they replaced it with a C20 which actually has better wifi range than the C30 did) And I noticed again that the screen would wash out more when held on an angle than the TF 101 did. Now I dont think I got two primes with the same exact issue so now I'm thinking that maybe its just the way the TFP LCD panel is. So I was wondering if someone that has both a TF101 and a Prime if they can do a side by side and let me know. Put the same wallpaper on both devices, and also set the brightness to the same on both devices(I set them both to max, with IPS+ off on the prime). Does the prime get more washed out when held on an angle compared to the TF101?
Thanks in advance
Put the Prime in Performance Mode and then re-do your testing.
Its an auto contrast feature of the tegra 3. Seems to happen more in lower power modes. Search for contrast on this forum there posts about it but its a feature not a bug. Higher brightness and super ips mode are also ways to reduce it from happening.
Oh yea and the 101 didnt have this feature.

Thanks, I was looking at that but wasnt sure if it was the same issue. I do notice the TFP washes out a lot more on an angle even when in performance mode. Since I got two replacements that were like this I'm thinking more its just the way it was made. When asus sent me the first replacement and I noticed it(I dont think I noticed it on my original TFP) I took a video of it washing out more compared to the tf101 when viewed on an angle. I'm pretty disappointed.. I have never seen an IPS screen wash out like that. It washes out on an angle more than my HTC Evo View(flyer) and that's not even an ips or slcd screen
Here are the links of the videos of the first replacement they sent me. This new replacement washes out the same way on an angle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdQIbLpCLj4

I have both, and don't notice any difference except the 201's screen is much sharper and way brighter. I hack the 101 with revolver, and have left the 201 stock. Just got the GPS kit, and now get more sats with the 201 indoors! Too bad the GPS kit doesn't have a power jack. My 201 is a BCOKAS.
If those videos are accurately showing what you're seeing with the device in-person, then I would exchange the unit again. Mine looks nothing like that. Like others have said, the viewing angles on my TF201 are just as good as on my TF101. I'd say the Prime's screen is an improvement in every way, and I thought the original Transformer had a very nice screen.
What you are seeing is Light Bleed, you can search in XDA how to fix it yourself (you have to open your Prime) or return it to Asus. That is not how the screen should look.

Yeah, thats the way it looks in person. I really doubt asus will replace it a 3rd time... I'm waiting to hear back from Hai Trat. I expected the viewing angles to be the same as well. when I wish I could remember if my first unit washed out.. I think I was too anal about the dead pixels it had to notice if that one washed out. But after getting the 1st replacement and the 2nd and both washed out like that and both were different batches (first replacement was a C3, 2nd was a C2) I figured maybe it was normal. Guess not..

Nope, it's not light bleed. That unit does have some but the video shows it correctly, when viewed on an angle the whole screen clouds and washes out. And this is the 2nd one that has done this. My tf101 has some light bleed and doesnt do that at all. This 2nd replacement I have (the video is of the 1st one) the backlight bleeding isnt as bad and it still washes out like that on an angle.
Hmmm....Now that I do a direct side-by-side...in a dark room, with dark backgrounds on both tablets...I do see more of that "glow" that you're showing in your videos. The image is still crisp, but there is a distinct white-out, glow kinda thing going on. Maybe not quite as pronounced as your video, but that could just be lighting, camera, etc.
I probably wouldn't have noticed without doing the side by side video to see if I could show you how mine was OK, lol. LIke I said, the image and colors are still crisp, but there is a bit of that glow over the image.
I almost wonder if it isn't the oleophobic coating refracting the light. It's definitely not just general backlight bleed. My Galaxy Nexus (which also has an oleophobic coating of some kind) doesn't seem to exhibit the same off-axis behavior, but the screen is OLED, is much smaller, etc, so it's hard to make a direct comparison.
Your videos did seem pretty pronounced though. At this point I can't comfortably say one way or the other. I still think my screen looks great. I guess you just have to figure out if you're satisfied or not. In comparison to my TF101, I'd pick my Prime's screen every time.

[Q] Subtle backlight flickering

Got my Kindle HDX 8.9 yesterday and love this thing. The only issue I am having, if it's even an issue at all, is a very subtle backlight flickering after I've moved between screens. Sometimes while watching a video, I notice it flickering as well. It almost seems like an auto-brightness is making very small changes to the display, although I have auto-brightness turned off.
I don't doubt it's a bit OCD on my part, so I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this. I wouldn't say it's a major issue, but it's one of those things that once you notice, it's hard not to see it.
I have noticed something similar but not really a flicker, it is is a screen redraw that shifts the gradient of some screens slightly. Really noticeable in LCD-test (AMOLED Read) from 1mobile store.

Hm, putting that way, I'd say you're right and is probably a better explanation. So I assume it's just how the screen works, rather than something defective with my device? I guess that makes me feel... a little better. I think.
I'll check out that app. Thanks.
I have not noticed it on plex or mxplayer when watching video, so might be a screen redraw issue with some apps.

I don't have extensive knowledge of screen redraw issues in relations to apps but I can attest to this. I too notice on some occasions the screen flickering craig mentioned but when it comes to using something like MXplayer, the flicker is non apparent when I am watching anything. So I'm assuming it's just an app thing causing it?
And I'm actually using the 7" HDX where I see what it is you're talking about. Still like my HDX for sure though lol
Seems to happen anywhere for me, even on the home (launcher) screen, in system preferences, etc.
I might stop in to Best Buy today and see if their demo units do the same thing.
I get the same screen flicker on the home screens and in apps. . It's like the auto brightness setting can't make up its mind

Well this is all certainly interesting. In my case, I don't have auto-brightness on, yet it still seems to make every so tiny adjustments. Starting to think it's just the way it is.
Now I guess it's just a matter of calming my OCD and dealing with it, or returning it. Shame too, because the screen is beautiful otherwise.
Follow up
Just wanted to check and see what everyone on this thread ended up doing in regard to their Kindle HDX devices. Did any of your issues get resolved? Did you end up returning your HDX's and getting something else?
I have a 7" Kindle Fire HDX and I love it. The device is perfect . . . except for the occasional screen flicker. I have gone through FIVE devices (returned my Kindle Fire HDX to Amazon and got sent a new replacement four different times). I noticed this flickering issue on all of them and eventually decided that it must just be how these things are. I personally have not observed a relationship between the flickering and the device getting hot. I believe that it is a screen redraw or auto-contrast issue but I'm not sure if it is software or hardware. If it is software I can live with it until they make a patch. If it's hardware I don't think I will be able to handle it long-term.
Please post back and tell me how you dealt with this issue. Thanks!

Just google ... There are tons of reports. Same problem here, too.
Similar / identical problems can be seen on a few other devices like the Xperia Mini.
Normally sooner or later there is a fix - for a rooted device.
I have noticed the same thing on both of my Kindle Fire HDX 7" models (one was an AT&T LTE model, the current one is a Verizon LTE model). For those who don't see it: turn the auto-brightness adjustment off, then go to a web page in Silk and put it into reading mode, and then start scrolling. It doesn't always flicker, it seems to start up after I've been reading for a few minutes, and then it keeps doing it every second or third time I scroll. It seems to happen all the time after that until I give the device a while to cool down. And just to clarify, it doesn't JUST happen in reading mode on Silk, but that's where it's most noticeable for some reason, where the background is white and the text is black and the scrolling is variable and repeated. The degree of flicker varies at random, it seems, from barely-noticeable to almost-completely-dark-and-back-to-full-brightness, but they're all quite annoying. They're also happening very quickly; the time from start-to-end for each flicker is perhaps 200-400 milliseconds.
Try this page for a good "Reading View" example (obviously, you have to put it in Reading View once the page finishes loading): Worm - Agitation 3.11
I assumed my backlight hardware had a problem, but then I saw all the reports of this, so maybe it's a fundamental design flaw rather than a hardware defect. The "Learn More" link under the "We Want You To Know" header on the Kindle Fire HDX 7" page describes the screen lighting technology (in the context of explaining why the faint blue tint that you can see around the edges sometimes--like in Reading View with a solid white background, for instance--are normal for the display) by saying:
To achieve the perfect color accuracy on Kindle Fire HDX 7" at the lowest possible battery consumption and device weight, we used blue, not white, LEDs. Blue LEDs allow for a much more accurate and rich representation of color and result in an up to 20% improvement in power efficiency.
As a result of using these blue LEDs, you may notice a very narrow, faint blue tint around the edge of the device when looking at items with a white background, such as books or web pages. All displays have some level of light emission around the edges, and the light on the Kindle Fire HDX 7" is blue due to the technology used to render perfect color accuracy.

So maybe the color-accurate, low-power blue LED lighting is also responsible somehow?

Just wanted to check and see what everyone on this thread ended up doing in regard to their Kindle HDX devices. Did any of your issues get resolved? Did you end up returning your HDX's and getting something else?
Please post back and tell me how you dealt with this issue. Thanks!

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I sent my Kindle back to Amazon a few days after creating this thread and really haven't thought about it since.
The final straw for me was going into Best Buy and using some of the demo units they had out (both 7" and 10" screens) and all of them had the same flickering effect. Decided it was just the way it is on the Kindle and the display they are using and ended up getting a different tablet.
Wish I had something further to add. Auto brightness was definitely not the cause as I had it turned off.
Thanks

Thanks to everyone responding to my post. Can you tell me what tablet you ended up getting instead (and if you are happy with it)?

I got an non-Android tablet and I'll leave it at that.

Is the TAB S6 AMOLED screen really that bad?

So I currently own a Tab S4, Note 10+ and Note 8 and I've been impressed with the AMOLED screen. Today I got a Tab S6 and I'm severly disapointed by the screen quality. Compaired to the other AMOLED displays, this looks like an old LED panel, pretty bad quality no deep blacks, low contrast and the same image looks totally different over the two Tab screens. Additionally, when something comes up that blurs the background, the effect is more like a severly reduced pallet count rather than the normal blurring effect.
Is this normal for the Tab S6 or is this a bad unit?
I've also had trouble with the under screen finger print scanner not registering fingerprints, so I'm thinking faulty...
I haven't had any problem with the screen nor the fingerprint. Might be a bad unit.
No problems with mine...Everything looks great. Just a thought...When I first got mine up and running it looked a little dim as you describe. I went into the settings and put it on vivid and it lit up and was a totally different look. But if that don't help then probably a faulty screen.
Come from the tab s3 have an s10 plus as my daily phone looks just as good as the s10 plus in my opinion.
Nope it isn't
I did try that, but even with vivid on it still looked washed out

Yeah sounds like a bad screen....I would take it back.
The quality control is awful, I've had three which I've returned due to uneven black levels.
Samsung are obviously aware of the issues with the displays but they don't care because many users just don't complain about it, or don't know what to look for.
Apparently there are a lot of people having uniformity issues with their devices and there doesn't seem to be one free of defects. As always it's the OLED lottery! Exchange until you're satisfied.

We are all techies in this forum the average user would probably not even notice if the backlight was uneven especially if they have come from an old non OLED device I think that's probably part of the issue

Totally different look that gnus hooked people up on, and milliards of nobbs saying that amoled is way superior tehnnologi. Now it decided to turn around and present natural colour palette (with uneven wrinkled display to boot), i agree that it can be not so good to look at it after vivid

Im in the same position as you and I already bought 3 Tablets that had unsatisfying black levels. I feel bad for buying and returning them and I am asking myself if I should keep trying or just give up.
The OLED display on my note 8 looks so smooth and even. I wish I would find a similar tablet display.
Did you finally find a unit of the Tab S6 that has perfect blacks ?

Unsatisfying black levels? How is this possible? Black should be totally black LOL xD
Do you mean the grey color or something near black? Or you guys really talk about true black color? ( for example when booting up the device )
True blacks are fine, but it doesn't handle mixing very well - Compression and noise is easily noticeable at that point.
For example : The blacks in this video look terrible and Compression is easily noticeable when mixing the Vegas sign and the landscape of the city.
But in this video, they're perfect - The only noticeable problem in this video for me is when the camera is panning the planet and mixing black, purple and blue - at which point some minor noise is present but the rest is fine.

No, I'm not concinved there are any perfect displays. I still have one corner that's darker, honestly this experience has put me off Samsung. As soon as there's an Android tablet with better specs I'm done with this, I might be done with Samsung to be honest, the punch holes in their new phones are horrible and they're overpriced..
What's the best way to check the uniformaty of the panel in the S6? I don't believe I've got any issues but better safe than sorry!
Tab S4 much better will return the s6 I just bought as you can see grey in blackboard in so.e videos which you don't on the tab S4. Hopefully replacement will be better.
