what do people think of 480x800 pixels? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i just want to get an idea of what others think of that display resolution. I am used to iphones retina display so to me it looks aot worse... writing isnt clear..just looks yucky.. but what do others think?

480x800 is a resolution not pixels. Anyway, to me it doesn't matter at all due to the ppi increase and the larger screen size.

ppi is still like 100 less then iphones... the larger screen size means jack if resolution is crap..true?

It's all we have for now. The truth is that the graphics are fuzzier then on iPhone 4, but nothing you can do about it.

which is why i think iphones still win

That's your opinion on the matter, just go with whatever floats your boat. I can never live with an iphone cause they just suck for pure media capabilities.

It depends on what you want from your phone. I actually like the AMOLED display and larger screen, and don't care for resolution as much. Every product has it's audience.

+1. The iPhone's screen is a bit sharper when viewing text, but the colors that the GSII produce are unlike any other non-Samsung device. Super vibrant, perfect screen size (for me), and battery-saving.

Certain flash access to sites, no conversion for media content, plays all .mkv format with subtitle support on the fly. Stuff like that isn't really capable on an iphone because it lacks support or just requires more time input to make it work, by tedious conversions.

what about graphics chip? is it much worse noticable compared 2 the iphone 4s..in ur opinion??

No idea since I never use my phone as a gaming device because I carry a 3DS with me.

erm....win what?

seems like this guy is just trying to stir up ****.....who goes into a forum for a particular product and asks the users if their product is crappier than another product

im not trying 2 stir nothing up... i just think iphones win in overall performance and simplicity

The iphone wins in regards to sharpness and gaming performance. But here's the thing. Give it 1-2 yrs before that gpu is finally put to use (by the time 2 yrs cone you'll be on your next phone, so whooptydoo) . So in other words, whatever game or not comes out right now for the iphone, the sgs 2 can more than handle them. The sgs 2 of course wins in customizability, no contest is that.
$1 gets you a reply

you started 3 posts about the same thing, obviously you're trying to stir ****. who cares if u think the iphone wins blah blah

Will the Evo 3d has the same 30fps cap issue?

I was very disappointed with my htc evo 4g. This issue was never fixed even if thought it was. after the (suppostly fix) Most kernel and htc firmware upgrade were able to reach around 50-53fps but never did it reached 60fps like my nexus. With a few tweaks It was able to reach closer to 60fps but you would get screen tearing. so please can anyone confirm this. i don't want to run games or sense cap at 30fps again.

There will obviously be no 30fps cap on the EVO 3d.
While I agree with you, it isn't so obvious....i felt it should have been obvious that the 4g wouldnt have had the cap, the nexus didn't...hell, my ****ty samsung moment didn't...
That said, I would be thoroughly shocked and horrified if it does have an fps cap...at which point I will return it, wait for the sgs2 and boycott htc for good...

Yeah from all the recent benchmarks of the sensation it looks like it might be 60...like even the anandtech ones...in quadrant they max out at 61 and it seems like it was clearly trying to do more but was limited
Sounds like a vsynch issue...
Also what's the point of rendering more frames then the refresh rate of the S-LCD anyway?
Except to generate heat, reduced battery life, increased tearing, and bragging rights for days...

Just to clarify, the human eye cannot register more than 30-35 fps. Going higher is just an ego boost.
With that said, I'm guilty of going for max fps also.

Don't know about you, but I can easily tell the difference between 30 and 60fps here.
Maybe if you showed them one at a time, it would be harder, but when they are (side by side) or one on top of the other in this case, the difference is easily apparent.

Considering ordering a Prime. Would you do it again?

Hey all!
My wife and I are in the market for tablets. Both of us are in school. We both want to be able to watch movies including Netflix. And we both need the ability to create and modify Word docs.
I've been doing a lot of research and think the Prime might be the best solution for us. However, the iPad is also a contender.
If you had to do it over again, which would you get and why?
Thanks for your input!
Why ask why?

Yep what he said.
I would do it again without hesitation. Apple devices are locked down, and therefore restrictive. With an Android tablet, you can do much much more!
It can also be customized to make it your own! Without hesitation, YES- I would do it again...
By far the best tablet I have ever owned and used. Blows the ipad 2 away in my opinion and the gaming is just amazing.

I agree 100%
i would do it again, the biggest reason for using it over an ipad2 is the dock, if you're planning to do a decent amount of word processing on a tablet, the TF line with their respective docks provide the best user experience in that regard compared to any other tablet on the market.
if i had to do it again id wait for ics. Im not overly impressed with the prime. I think once apps and os can be optimized for quadcore then it will be the best tablet. But for now most apps and HC are not so you wont see a significant difference.

Document editor

Hey all, I'm looking for an app that can edit documents. I want to be able to hand write or sign documents. I deal with contracts daily and sometimes have to meet my clients mobile. Anyway, can you say a little bit more about what you are looking for? Are these Word documents you want to sign? What app are you currently using in the iOS world (so we can look it up and see what it does). If they are Word docs, are you comfortable converting them to PDF?
Also, with regards to writing, most tablets don't do very well unless they have something like a Wacom digitizer or similar tech in them. The iPad series doesn't have this. There are only a couple Android tablets that do (HTC Flyer, Thinkpad tablet) and there is a new Asus MeMo tablet that looks like it might support a stylus.
Now, if you are talking a more full blown "computer" tablet, then you might want to look at the Samsung Series 7 Slate or the Asus EP121 which would both do an excellent job for you but they come with a higher price tag (though not much higher than a 64gb iPad 2) and the battery life is a fraction of most modern day tablets.
Anyway, hope that helps.

Well I'm not sure you can hand write on a word document via PC ipad or android. But I know I can save a word doc to PDF and then edit (hand write) on the PDF. That is currently what I am doing on my iPad. That is what I would like to be able to do on an Android tablet...It works pretty well when I meet with my clients. Guess I'm just getting the bug to switch to Android tablet, but I don't know....hmm...

[DISCUSSION] Let's Talk Bootdroid

Obviously we are all Android lovers right?
But as I was skimming around one of the general Android forums, I came upon a thread that was talking about something called "Bootdroid." Assuming that this is not fake, Bootdroid allows you to dual boot Android and iOS 5.
I'm going to be honest, being able to boot into iOS 5 on an Android device seems pretty interesting to me. Booting into (a jailbroken) iOS also means being able to use iOS apps that aren't found in the Play Store. Also, buying those expensive iOS devices won't be a problem because you would now be able to take a cheaper Android device, such as the O1, and boot iOS on it.
Probably the only reason why I would choose iOS over Android (other than the apps) is because of how Android lags due to how it renders the UI:
https://plus.google.com/100838276097451809262/posts/VDkV9XaJRGS
I would guess that our phone's hardware can probably run iOS smoothly given the specs of an iPhone. While the iPhone has a stronger CPU (1GHz Cortex-A9 compared to our 600Mhz ARM11) and a stronger GPU, both the iPhone and the O1 have 512 MB RAM. Also, on the project page, it says that iOS works well on the Motorola Droid, which has a 600Mhz CPU and 256MB RAM.
What's cool about this Bootdroid is that according to the blogspot below:
Android devices that have screen resolutions that are lower than 960x640, or if you can divide the resolution 960x640 by an integer to equal your current devices resolution, then it will likely be more compatible with the iOS 5 firmware and the pixels will be less diluted.

Of course, if Bootdroid is fake, this would all just be wishful thinking. But it seems pretty legit to me:
http://code.google.com/p/bootdroid/
https://github.com/Peter42/BootDroid
http://bootdroid.blogspot.com/
What are your thoughts?
Interesting, this would actually benefit us because of the many things in iOS, but then again, Android is awesome. I hope this isn't a fake like the other ones i've seen because it would be pretty sweet to have Android and iOS dual-boot
Looks really cool.... but our O1 resolution is not in proportion to 960x640

Actually it is
Isn't our phone 480x320? We can divide 960x640 by 2 to get the resolution of the O1.
This is one of those few times where having a smaller resolution comes in handy. Good luck to those who have 480x800

oh OK...I thought the other way...I thought that the proportion between length and width should be the same... like 480 is 1.33 times of 320 but the same is not the case with 960x640..
and what about phones with hd display...

Well luckily for us, our phone's resolution is proportional to that of the iPhone. For higher-end phones with a greater resolution (such as 480x800), it's going to be hard to resize everything
Gotta be nice

I thought the project was at a standstill, but it looks like there is some activity going on. If you check out the blogspot, every previous post seems to be deleted. The only post shows a smiley face with the title "Copyright Infringement: Part II" and the words "The Battle has begun. We'll be back soon." I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but at least something is happening

However, iPhone 2G and 3G have HVGA display so iOS running on the O1 doesn't seem impossible. Just hope that they based it on iOS 2/3/4 and not 5.
But the HVGA variants (screens have 480×320 pixels (3:2 aspect ratio), 480×360 pixels (4:3 aspect ratio), 480×272 (~16:9 aspect ratio) or 640×240 pixels (8:3 aspect ratio)) doesn't include 640x960.
But I'd love to get iOS on my phone especially because of uber smooth scrolling.
Now it says that he's meeting with his lawyer and the website should be running normally in the next few days
Guys you have been talking about resolutions and things. But i think it should be least of our worries . being the Orwellian philosophy that apple follows, will it be possible to hack and slash it up to our needs. of course its our wet dream but the hardware support, kernels all these things- it Wiil definitely be some time before the greatest devs figure it all out.
I'm sincerely not saying this in derogatory sense, just giving you guys some perspectives.

[Q] [Xperia S] -- Before Buying It.

First of all, Hello guys... I'm creating a new thread to address my questions because they are too many, As you can see, I'm selling my current smartphone (Already sold Lol) and I will buy an Android phone, so my choices are between Galaxy S2, and Xperia S, I would love to buy the Xperia S rather than Samsungs Smartphone, but Im dealing with the "yellowish pixels" "screen issues" thingy before I Buy it. Could you guys recommend the better choice, I've heard that the problem was solved long time ago, and screen issues were present on first batches. Btw: I'm buying the phone through Amazon, anything I should be careful of?.
2nd Problem: Good case, I mean... Otterbox Commuter style.
Get the XPS, Samsung has the same yellow tint issues. Before buying make sure your device is w16 or newer, then you should be fine.

Thanks for the reply mate, Like I said i have no access whatsoever, related to buying an specific batch or something like that. (Here I mean buying buying products released on date xx/xx/xxxx or something really specific). I'm buying the device through Amazon... and well I guess despite the screen issue I might be going for the XS. The Galaxy I'm talking about is the 9100G, Is it really true that it comes with 1.08ghz clocked (cpu) and a PowerVR SGX 540... as far as I know, adreno beats up the SGX and the Mali.. I'm i wrong??
Any Suggestions about a really good case? (amazon)

The 220 is about the same in terms of raw power, but some say the SGX540 performs better in games. I don't see any difference myself, the UI is smooth, the browser is fast and I don't really care about games too much.

Yes benchmarks wise the Adreno 220 in the Xperia S is more powerful than Mali 400 in GS2 and Note and of course the SGX is slower than Mali.

Plays all my anime just fine in 720p. Sometimes lag happens in 1080p, but very rarely. Don't know about the cases, I keep the phone in my backpack.
Hello,
I'm using Xperia S despite other people i will not recommend it. It has so much problems and i did not like Sony custommer service and concern.
If i had a chance i would have bought Samsung Galaxy S3.
And one more thing, if you are making supernormal phone calls, ayou should compare SAR leveles.
Xperia S 1.31 w/kg and it is over normal levels..
I like the size of the SXS less, because using it with one hand is not easy , But well all these phones with these specs are big (also screen)
The closest thing to a otterbox case i have seen would be this one probably (2 layers):
