Resets - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Can someone knowledgeable please document what the various resets actually do.
I know about the Power On while holding the N key, and the full factory reset after 8 failed boots.
Are there others?
What do each of these do as far as restoring system folders and clearing side-loaded applications?
What clears the cache and what user data is affected?
These are just bits of documentation I think would help the user community as folks try to root their own nooks and achieve various states of "brickyness".

How to reset the Prime correctly..

Hi, I decided to start all over again and I see that you can make a reset in settings....
But, what is the hole close to the SD card slot for?
I do not care losing all my data, apps and so on.
I just want to reset "badly", so everything is gone.
Running WW14 now but the unit is German even though I am in Denmark. (Amazon DE)
I use it with "english" as system language.
It's rooted by that is not important either, I will reroot after that.
Please tell me how to reset it the best and "deepest" way
Thanks
the pinhole on volume rocker side, underneath memory card slot, is the reset button. just stick a paperclip or something in there until you hear or feel a click or see tablet reset/reboot itself.
if you want to do a factory reset. go into settings. then backup/reset. then press factory reset. it will wipe all data off tablet.
And the data will not be lost this way?
it's something i am curious about too.
if you're rooted, then you do factory reset (setting --> backup & reset), what exactly is going to happen to the tablet (e.g. system/data) - are certain apps like Rootkeeper/su binary going to left untouched or not OR is it going to be 'clean slate' (no pun intended) ?
I have performed a couple of resets from "Backup & Reset" menu, so, is there a difference of using physical the reset button?
the physical reset button is more like a reboot button. for when device freezes or locks up. hopefully that button will get you out of it. now the factory reset within settings will clear just about all data. don't think it erases root files. not sure because root files in system and those reset or reboots doesn't clear that. someone should chime in with more details.
now there is another reset from within recovery mode. where you can wipe all caches and dalvaik partitions etc...then rest from there. to get there you hold volume down and power button at the same time. keep holding till devcie reboots. then you should see some kind of lil on-screen menu or something. the complete instructions can be found on Asus site.
Thanks.. I could not find this info on ASUS side though.
Ok.
Just to share with everyone on what will happen if you do Backup->Factory Reset if you are rooted.
(1) all data in internal sdcard will be wiped clean
(2) /system is not going to be touched
--> you will retain root --> if you have Superuser app installed prior to reset, this will reappear after factory reset.
--> just need to reinstall OTA Rootkeeper after a successful factory reset
What is the best way to go about doing a factory reset and keeping a games progress? I have a lot of different games on my prime and I just want to make sure I can save the progress in all of them.

ASUS's App Backup if it's no more than 600MB of information (don't know why this limit is in place), or if you're rooted then you can back up the games and their respective data with Titanium Backup. Depending on the game you could just physically copy the save data as well.

Non-booting SII with CM 7.1

As of yesterday, my CM7.1 phone won't boot - it gets stuck at the "rotating arrow" blue Android for ever. It's a Samsung Galaxy S II GT-9100.
I have been running CM 7.1.0 for several happy months now, and haven't tried to install or upgrade my ROM. The last action I took before this happened is that I made a full system backup (using CWM 5.0.2.6).
That backup is present on the internal memory. I can boot into recovery, mount drives and access devices using adb shell. So I do have an opportunity to fix what's broken, if I can work out what it is.
Given that the last thing I did was a backup, I checked to see if any of the partitions were full, but none are. (None is more than 42% full according to df; although strangely, df does not show any partition mounted on /.) I tried making another backup, watching carefully - that worked fine. I tried restoring the first backup - no improvement.
I've also tried wiping everything Recovery allows me to that's non data-destructive - cache, Dalvik cache etc. It hasn't helped.
How do I work out what's wrong? Is there a boot log file anywhere which might give me a clue as to what is wrong? I've searched for "*.log" but can't find anything obvious.
I don't want to do a factory wipe if I can avoid it, because obviously that will lose all my data. If I do a factory wipe and restore just the data partition, does that put me pretty much back where I was? If so, how do I restore just the data partition? The Restore option in CWM Recovery seems to do full backups only, and only from a particular directory.
The original CM and Google Apps zips are still on the internal SD (same versions as are currently not working). Would it be worth trying to reinstall those, without wiping? Or would that be data-destructive?
Any other ideas?
Thanks!
Gerv
SOLVED - remove 0-byte data/system/profiles.xml
I tried doing a full factory reset from Recovery. This got the phone booting again, but without any of my data . Fortunately, ClockWorkMod has a "partial backup restore" function. I restored the data partition... and the phone stopped booting again.
So this is progress. I now had some idea where the problem lay. I finally found it using a laborious 5-minutes-per-cycle manual bisection technique. Delete half the stuff on the data partition, reboot, if it still fails, delete more, reboot... once you get it to boot, restore the data partition, narrow it down further. Once you find a top-level directory, repeat the process inside it.
The result: the existence of a single 0-byte file stopped my phone from booting entirely. The file was: data/system/profiles.xml.
I have no idea what that file does (there are only a few references online), how a 0-byte version of it got created, or why having it existent but empty breaks things but if it's not present everything works fine. I have no idea if anyone else will ever see this problem, or if they will ever find this forum post. But still, here's my Wisdom of the Ancients (google the phrase for the relevant XKCD comic).

Deleting individual app data vs factory reset

I posted this in a hardware specific forum but it's a general question so I am reposting here in hopes of getting a non-hardware specific answer. I apologize for not finding this forum first.
I have a couple different devices to sell (one on stock JB 4.1.2 and one on CM 10.2.1) and I would prefer not to factory reset them. If I go through each individual app and clear its data and cache and also delete any accounts I have set up (e.g., Facebook, Gmail), does that get rid on my identifying information the same as a factory reset would?
I think you should just go for a factory reset...
If you are using CWM/TWRP then just do a data wipe...
Don't format the internal SD....
Data wipe is much better option than what you were thinking..!!
But anyway doing that much is enough to clear your personal information n stuff..!!
If you are going to sell, what would be the reason to NOT factory reset?
Factory resetting will not get rid of your roms and put you back to like you got it brand new, but will wipe out all of your user data, which typically, most people do not want to share.

[Q] Full and secure wipe -> no way to get data back ?

Hi everyone,
I am about to sell my old galaxy S3, and I would like to completly wipe it:
I have already read tons of topic, i don't want to:
- manually delete files
- wipe from recovery
- format from the setting menu
etc.. I have already done these steps before and i am not satisfied:crying:, i would like the next owner to not be able to find any file on my phone with softwares such as getDataBack or DiskDigger...
I read on xda that the only way to "erase" a file is to replace it.. so if i fill my phone with many useless files I may not be able to recover any file anymore..?
but that's why i poste here.. i would like to know if there is a software which can do this by itself ? or if there are other methods...
thanks a lot for your help
cheers
anyone ?
Here's a tutorial I found online!
Step one: Encrypting
I recommend encrypting your device before you are getting ready to wipe it. The encryption process will scramble the data on your device and, even if the wipe doesn't fully delete the data, a special key will be required to unscramble it.
To encrypt your device on stock Android, enter settings, click on Security, and select Encrypt phone. The feature may be located under different options on other devices.
Step two: Perform a factory reset
The next thing you will want to do is perform a factory reset. This can be done on stock Android by selecting Factory data reset in the Backup & reset option in the settings menu. You should be aware that this will erase all of the data on your phone and that you should backup anything you don't want to lose.
Step three: Load dummy data
Following step one and two should be enough for most people, but there's an extra step you can take to add another layer of protection when erasing your personal data. Try loading fake photos and contacts on your device. Why you ask? We will address that in the next step.
Step four: Perform another factory reset
You should now perform another factory reset, thus erasing the dummy content you loaded onto the device. This will make it even harder for someone to locate your data because it will be buried below the dummy content.
Still feeling a little paranoid? Repeat steps three and four as many times as you like. As I mentioned above, though, for most people simply following steps one and two should be enough. Without the encryption pin, which is overwritten in the initial factory reset, it will be almost impossible to unscramble your data.
Step five: Try using data recovery software to see if you succeeded in completely wiping your original data!
Then again, you could always take a hammer to your phone or toss it in the toilet. You know, if you aren't interested in selling it.
Hello, thank you very much for those explanations !
I will do all these steps and check if backup softwares find something

Move anti-theft to Android system.

Hello, through the "titanium backup" application i can move an application to /system thus protecting it from a hard reset, you can inform me how i can perform this same process of moving to /system not only the application but also your data forwhoever After a hard reset, both the application and your pre-configured data remain safe on the device?
I plan to use this in an anti-theft app.
would it survive factory reset in TWRP?

I want to protect the overhead of a hard reset so that it is only possible to remove the application and its configuration by flash another rom
Please help me :crying:
I want to make the application proof of restart both the application and its data in a way that even after a restart the application remains installed and configured on the device.
This version of avast anti theft had the function I'm looking for. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.avast.android.antitheft_setup
After a long time I thought of two ways to accomplish this process but I would like some developer or someone understanding the subject to inform me if this is possible.
The anti-theft app I want to move to the system is this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.avast.android.at_play.
1 = I noticed that the location where application data is saved is "/data/data/com.avast.android.at_play" so I thought if it is possible to block this folder from deletion, somehow changing its properties, unchanging, causing her to survive a hard reset.
2 = I thought of somehow editing the path where the application files are saved, for example "/data/data/com.avast.android.at_play" to "system / data / com.avast.android.at_play" but no where is the file where I can edit this path. If anyone can help thanks.
