Gingerbread for Nook Color but not for Samsung 7 tablet? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed that the nook color has a gingerbread update but the famed Samsung 7 inch tab (wifi only) p1010 doesn't.
I know this was shot down in the Q&A before but I am curious as to why given the fact that the nook color has the same PowerVR SGX530 graphics chip.
I do know the nook color runs either OMAP3621 or OMAP3622 system on a chip
and the P1010 runs the OMAP3630 system on a chip but both have that same PowerVR SGX530 graphics chip. All of the listed OMAP SOC models have the same ARMv7 Cortex-A8.
So this begs the question, what is preventing the gingerbread port? Any dev's want to chime in?
Thanks for any time & effort reading or replying.
c0le

I have also learned that the droid x phone runs the same OMAP SOC and it too has the gingerbread update.

*bump*
No reply from the dev's? Am I to assume it is just laziness?

Any idea why a nook color build wouldn't work on this model? How about one of the phone builds? isn't it the same SOC minus the cell modem and possibly Sim port?
The whole idea of system on a chip is to integrate everything.

i am not a dev but i was also thinking the same... can you post this in the galaxy tab dev/question/general tab section... it might get the attention this topic deserves in the appropriate forum

Thanks for the suggestion. I have made such a post here:

[Q] Eden on Archos 101?

Any possibility that we might see NotionInk's cool Eden UI on the Archos? I know the NotionInk Adam has Tegra, but I don't know if it's required for Eden...
Check out the NotionInk web site under the Software section if you don't know what I am talking about...
Moved to general as not android development
Probably not a good idea to try. Eden seems to be using nvidia's chip heavily. I wouldn't want to try that on our Archos'. Besisdes, let's see what honeycomb has for us as far as UI is concerned.
HoneyComb has many things to show us, a pre-release of the SDK is out and it's GREAT!

Archos Gen9 Hardware Modding

Hi folks. Firstly, could some kind mod please create an Archos Gen9 category, and move this thread into it? You will then be beyond wonderful...
I've been looking at potential tablets for awhile, and am attracted to the Archos Gen9 devices coming out for their potential modability. I'm keen for feedback on this, and to start a discussion thread. Please post for your ideas and comments.
What interests me most:
1. They run an omap4 chipset, which is well supported (with graphics acceleration) under Ubuntu's arm port. Also, Texa Instruments, the makers of the omap chips, have a great linux community around them.
2. They have 2 x 1.5 ghz processors, along with a myriad of other goodies in their chips
3. Both the 80 and 101 models have options for a hard drive. The hard drive interests me less than the space put aside to put one in, and the sata conector that goes along with it. My hopes are it's relatively easy to open up the tablet, then switch out the drive for a fast ssd. Toshiba has a 7mm ssd drive coming out that works with a sata connection. Otherwise, a 5mm 1.8inch mini-sata drive might work, if it was packed out.
4. The last couple versions of the Archos system seem to have a developers version with it, so (hopefully) one could replace Armstrong with Ubuntu's arm port with minimal hassle. Regardless, a modified Ubuntu image should work fine with this device.
Anyone keen on this? I'd like to know your thoughts on hardware modability, and alternative software that can load on these devices. I'm looking at replacing my netbook with a tablet, and seems these upcoming Archos devices might be just the ticket. Lastly, does anyone know if the 16gb solid state drives shipping with the lighter models are likely to be soldiered onto the board, or is it possible to swap them with something else, like the ssd drives included in the eepc's and acer netbooks. Cheers.
Its way to early to create a Gen9 Forum

Well, one processor, but 2x 1.5GHz cores.
Apparently the G9 101 flash versions will only have a 1GHz chip (probably the OMAP 4430), as well as the G9 80 8GB model. The other models will be clocked at 1.5GHz, running the OMAP 4460.
Code:
80 G9 8GB: 1.0GHz 299$
80 G9 16GB: 1.5GHz 329$
80 G9 250GB: 1.5GHz 369$
101 G9 8GB: 1.0GHz 369$
101 G9 16GB: 1.0GHz 399$
101 G9 250GB: 1.5GHz 469$

Not really any reason for Archos to not include an SDE like they have been for the last two generations.

They aren't solid state drives. Theyr'e flash memory chips, and yes they are soldered on the board. They will likely operate the exact same way as last generation's chip, where they hosted the OS and the app storage, so they won't be replacable.
Also, it isn't way too early to start a G9 section. Most major hyped phones that come out get a section a month or so before they come out. Around next month would be a good time to start a G9 section (or start it now and have the mod for it make an announcement, and then only make a "General" section until they actually come out). People will continually post about the G9 devices here in the G8 section, because this is the only Archos section on XDA. If there were a G9 section, we could keep things separated.
Thanks for that Harfainx. Of course, that makes more sense about the flash memory chips. I still wonder how modable the rest of ths flash based units are, but think I'll be going for the hard drive versions, and pulling them apart. I'm still stoked Archos is putting in a sata hard disk to begin with, hers should be heaps more options for hacking it.
And yes, if this is the only place for people to post on XDA about the gen9 devices, this is where they will go. The fact that people are already posting means thaf we should have an area setup for gen9. Or at least have and archos area, with gen 8 and 9 under it. Cheers.

[Q] ROOT POSSIBLE? (tablet)

Hey guys just wondering, i just bought a new tablet from amazon , the TABTRONICS 8GB M009S 7" Capacitive Android tablet PC (link http://www.amazon.co.uk/TABTRONICS-...tablet/dp/B006T099XE/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top )
here is the spec-
CPU : A10 1.2 GHz
Graphics Processor : Mali 400 MHz
Touchscreen : 5 point multi touch capacitive
resolution 800 x 480
Operating System : Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
Memory : 1GB RAM DDR3 / 8GB NAND FLASH STORAGE
Flash - upgradeable by Micro SD memory card (max 16GB) WiFi : 802.11 b/g/n
I am wondering if it is possible to root this device ,with it running 4.0 being a bit harder, i own an xperia play so i know a thing or 2 about this device , but my questions lay with what method is best , what if there is any device usb files i can use for it and also what roms are comapitble ?
I am very clued up so any advice or explanation or directions will be useful
cheers
I don't think so. It's one of those obscure tablets that no one has really heard about. It has a unique processor b/c it's custom made by that company and dont't think anybody has worked on it.
If you are looking for a good, rooting tablet, try the Nexus 7.
Thanks for the advice. I only got this to kind of introduce me to the Tablet world. The Nexus 7 is definitely on my top must have

There might be a way to do it. I know my friend got a cheap $80 tablet off of Amazon that just said Google on the back. It had no brand name what so ever on it. It turned out to be a wondermedia wm 8600 or something like that running some hacked gingerbread version with a fake market. It had an old touch screen, not even capacitive. I found a tool designed to root it and put official market on it and everything, and it worked for like 50 different models that were similar. It didn't make it great, but it worked better and at least had the official market. Maybe there is something like that for yours.
I can't think of the name of the program, but try looking at your model number info and try searching for that specific on Google. You never know what you might find.

[Q] Tegra 2 , Clarification needed!

Hello all!
I guess this should be in the development thread, anyways.
Regarding to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tegra
@Tegra 250 AP20H (Ventana)
Is the most confusing part of SoC types....
Is there a different build of the Ventana between manufacturers? :0
The Optimus 2x uses the wolfson DAC WM8990 chip, while the Atrix 4G uses the WM8903 according to some rumors, is this true? Plus the dac is in the SoC, not externally...
Any body can clarify this please?
(Dont want to buy a 400 bux teardown document of the tegra 2)
Thanks!
Any response/help is appreciated!

Bauhn AMID-972XS rooting?

Just bought this tablet this morning. Found out that the programs have been signed with the wrong id. Can't update programs without deleting them, which means I need to root the device. I'd like to know if any of the rooting methods are better than any other if they work. I'd also like jellybean. Would I have to try and make a custom rom? Or could I try one from another tablet?
I'd be grateful for some help, but I know everyone is busy with more interesting stuff, so I'll wait patiently.
In the mean time I'll try some of the methods out there and hope I don't brick the device.

+1 on the questions.
I think for root, some tools using generic exploits for 4.0.3 might work. but for custom roms we might be out of luck.

Thanks. does that mean we can use the ICS 4.04 firmware from http://en.ployer.cn/support.php?id=3 along with the install guide from it? (and that the firmware between the bauhn and momo units is the same, or compatible, despite physical appearance differences (like physical keys, and pooosibly another CPU (the bauhn tablets are all Amlogic Cortex A9...if the A10 in the allwinner is the CPU type ref))?
also, any idea if the page you linked to has cooked roms with root included?
OK.
Rooted with this...

Seems to work. Have deleted youtube.apk from the system directory. Rebooted. Installed youtube 4.06? (I think) Now youtube just won't run. Did a full factory reset and cache wipe from recovery (wasn't even sure recovery existed on this thing, but there you go). Installed youtube again. Still doesn't work even after deleting program cache and deleting settings from app menu.
Will see how I go with the link from AJ88. See where it leads.
More later.
You may use 4.0.3 firmware in your tablet and may use clockwork recovery 5 in your tablet...
Many people use this firmware in micromax funbook..
Just give it a try many things in this player momo tab and your device is same..so do at your risk..
First try to run recovery if you can flash it successfully first backup your current firmware so that in future if things goes wrong you can get your original device back.
Best luck

So I have to find firmware compatible with my processor and other hardware inside this thing? Do I have that right?
Time to start looking for something with the same hardware.
Yes that's because if your device ram is 512 and you flash a firmware of device which has 1gb ram than how it operate?
Same for processor

these might be silly questions, but since we now have root access - is there a standard Cyanogen mod for ICS we can install/along with the required CWM or do those need to be custom made for the specific customization of ICS 4.0.3/rom/kernel/bootloader/etc?
Not silly at all as far as I'm concerned.
But; from what I've read, there is no ROM that can be installed on everything. They all have to be modified to suit the hardware.
I'm still looking into ROM kitchens at this point to figure out what needs to be done to create a ROM.
Needless to say, this'll take a while though.

If you find something that works let me know. I'm happy with ICS on mine, but I've found that the USB firmware is not exactly perfect and doesn't work properly through the Android API. You have to resort to the Kernel Native driver. I wouldn't mind finding a firmware that actually works properly.
If anyone is making a rom for this device, I'll be happy to assist, but i don't have any programing skills.
There are too many bugs on this system with Ice scream sandwich and hoping a rom would clean them out. Especially with updating the youtrube app on Google play.

Try the Ainol novo7 Elf2 Tablet at SlateDroid.com
After countless protests we've finally gotten the company AMLogic and Ainol to release sources. Though its dirty and incomplete, its something.
Some had a go at making CM9 too. The tablet uses the same SoC (AML-M6) so it has some compatible drivers, it would need to be cooked a certain different way to make it compatible though.

Hi, I'm experiencing weak wireless signal on the AMID-972XS while other devices like phone and laptop seem to pick a better signal at the same location.
Has anyone had this problem? I'm wondering if it's normal due to the hardware spec of the wireless card or is my unit faulty.

I first thought it was a faulty tablet then I replaced it and I'm having the same problem with the new one.
When I try and load a youtube videos it takes a while and when it loads it keeps cutting out.
I check the wireless bar and find that there's only 2 of the 3 bars of signal.
But on my iPhone same located youtube videos load fast and no drop outs.
