I've tried logging into the android market using the non-rooted technique and complains I have no android phone after logging in under my google account, enter a phone # etc. After the root, will this be resolved, or did you have an android phone / tablet already on the account?

Android is basically Linux
Rooting your device means giving yourself root, or superuser (admin) access, giving you access to system files and the ability to change things that normally are marked read only.
This allows for removing "pre-installed" applications (called by some people "bloat-ware", because they bloat the system.), installing other applications (for example, although members of this forum figured out how to "side-load", or install without a market, some of the Google apps, the "Google Market" requires an entire framework which needs root access), and making changes to the system in ways that generally void your warranty (but can sometimes speed things up and make the device do things that no one expected it to do).
"Rooting" is also the first step (but only *one* of many) toward installing custom versions of the Android operating system (or "ROMs").
It's kind of a big deal, and the ability to root makes the device just *that much* more appealing to people who like to tinker.

Hi, I followed the video all up till the part before it prompts the installation of Gapps. I don't know why mine did not provide that prompt. It just stopped working.
Now I have no clue if my root was successful. Please help?

you might have accidentally hit enter or something. To check for root, go to search and instead of putting go launcher in, put superuser and it should tell you if the superuser app is installed or not. If installed you are rooted and you can use the gapps instructions to install that alone. but I would just try running nook zergy again. Make sure your cable is not loose.

How did you get one if you are in india? I am sorry, but your request is one that very few would even consider. My recommendation is to setup a fake mailing address or possibly a P.O box.

you dont have to setup the credit card to turn on, just the mailing address when you create a barnes and noble account. no credit card required.

The point of the android market is to only show you games that are capable of functioning on your device. If you can see it in the android market, you should be able to play it... however, we have a hacked market so this may not be 100% true...

So I know they have preloaded Root SD Cards for the Nook Color so that you don't "break" your Nook and void your warranty and so you can easily revert back by just removing the card. Do you know if they exist for the Tablet yet? I've seen reports where using the ones for the Color on the Tablet don't work.

Adam has found a way to boot stock B&N on SD card, but some people still report issues from it. No one has found a way to boot non-signed roms from SD.

Hey guys, I am about to follow the root instructions found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354487
But before I do it I want to know what features could/will be lost in doing this. Obviously the auto-update (which makes complete sense). But in general I like the interface for now. It has its drawbacks, but I like the built-in mail client and the browser is fine for the most part. In the future I might also want to try ICS on it, but for now I am happy to use the built-in interface.
I really just want to root so that I can side load apps so that I don't have to pay B&N for apps that are otherwise free on the Android Market. That and I have never been a fan of auto-updates. But I want to keep the mail client and I especially want to keep the ability to read their entire digital catalog for free while I am in a B&N store.
Hell I would like to take that a step further and get it to work outside the store if possible. But I would settle for just keeping the original feature. I tried it earlier today and I love that feature.
So I would like to know if I would lose any of those features when I root this device. Does anyone know?

When you Root you can still use the stock Nook "Home" launcher. You can install a second launcher and switch between the 2 on the fly so that you have "Nook Mode" and Tablet Mode".
2 warnings:
1) when I rooted and added Gapps, something broke the stock email client and I was not able to find a quick way to fix it.
2) I have not found a way to get Android Market or side loaded apps to show up int he stock Nook "library" so they can only be accessed via the "search" function or my using an Android Launcher with a normal app drawer.
I use the Nook Color App Manager to add sideloaded apps to the stock Nook home screen and/or library. It works great.
There is a detailed artile at liliputing....Do a Google search for: "How to add sideloaded apps to your NOOK Tablet home screen, app library" As a new member I can not post a direct link. Sorry.

Hey guys it looks like the read in store ability works just fine still. I got this device rooted last night. Now iwant to see if this ability can be retained somehow while upgrading to ICS. It would also rock to be able to access the in store readable items from any wiring connection.

I DO NOT want to ROOT my Nook mainly because I'm not an expert and I'm afraid of Bricking it and there's the warranty issue and my extended geek squad protection plan. However I did the TG sideload thing and have access to the Amazon Market. I do not have access to the Android Market. I have reviewed every single thread by indirect and the videos by Albert. But today I found the ANDROID CENTRAL Side Load wonder. I had already used the information here on accessing the USB Debugging and checked the USB debugging boxes. It looks like I can get the titanium back up directly from appbrain and I'm wondering if I can use the Android Central side load wonder to load that app then use indirect's zip files to change the software version to 999 to block the 1.4.1 update.

Titanium backup requires root to work. Only way to block the OTA is through root since you are modifying a system file to do it.
You can root and then unroot for geek squad blacktie m8. (Most geek squanders dontvknow the difference between bricked and just a software bug.)..trust me...I work for Best Buy lol
I read the whole section forum and people are side loading uncompatible apps, but no where does anyone explain "how to" side load an app can somenoe tell me, I have apps on my Galaxy 7in and they are not compatible with the Sony S running Android 3.2.1.
I want my Amazon app store, Pinger texting, words with friends and I have others too!
This is a new toy for me but disappointed that I cannot get these apps

It's easiest if you have ADB knowledge so you can pull apps from the galaxy tab and push them to the tablet s, but you can get the amazon appstore by going to amazon's website and it'll email you a link to the download. Also, I have words with friends on my tablet which I downloaded from the market no problems. Maybe with the latest tablet s update it is no longer marked as compatible, in which case we'll have to wait for the ICS update for a lot of the fragmentation problems to go away.
Put the .apk file from your Tab on your sd card, then you go into a file explorer type application on the Sony to find the file. Click on it and it should ask you if you want to install.
You should be able to download the amazon app store directly from amazon.com.
Also a nice program that will backup all your settings/files/apks is MyBackup Root, which will put all the apk's in one folder. However looks like the sony still hasn't been rooted?? I'm still waiting for mine in the mail.

If you use Astro File Manager (I know plenty do) on your Tab, you can use Astro's built-in App Manager to backup the apk files from every installed app to a folder on your SD Card. Then just copy this folder to your Sony like any other file, then using Astro (or some other file manager) to click on the individual apps in that folder and choose install.

I really am technically challenged here, I downlaoded the Astro File system, and I backed up the programs I want but I don't know where I backed them up to, it didn't give me a choice as to where to back them up.
Then I dont know how to transfer them from one device to the other. I wasn't kidding when I said technically challenged!

you could also save apps on a shared drive and install from there using file manager or the same via dropbox, etc

Would it not be easier to just use the normal Amazon web page rather than mess about trying to get an app to install? If it's anything like the Amazon iphone app, it's pretty useless anyway - certainly nowhere near as good as using the web page.

I really need to text so I need a texting program that works well with at least some options. Chompsms and Handcent do not work without a phone number and getting an answer from tech support from either of those is like pulling eye teeth,(sorry)
I found a texting program on my galaxy 7 inch that works wonderful and does have some options for larger fonts, a local phone number bubbles so you know who is talking blah blah blah, it is not compatible with Android 3.2.1 which is on my new Sony tablet,
I am trying to side load that and Have no idea what I am doing,
Plus when we get ICS does that mean some of the things that are not compatible now will be when we get that update?

Sorry for the slow reply. By default, the apps we be backed up to a folder called Backup on the SD card. In there, there should be your apk's.

I hope this proves useful to someone, but especially noobs like myself! I've searched high and low for a a way to access and install apps that are either restricted by country (I'm in Vancouver, BC) or by device type of and up to now was only able to find references here at XDA that involve using VPN. If the following tip is already common knowledge and I somehow overlooked it, I apologize in advance.
Yesterday I ran across this article handy applet that so far has worked flawlessly for me:

No need to install anything, but just unzip the DL into any new folder and run it directly from there. It does require Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0 or later. First time the tool is launched it prompts you for a DeviceID and associated account and P/W for the device. I used the DeviceID for my Galaxy S2.
(To find the DeviceID on a phone, enter [*#*#8255#*#*] (not including the brackets), and find the lines that begin with "JID="and "DeviceID-".
When I first ran the tool, I ran a search and got no results.. Found that the trick is to enter the search term(s) and then select the "custom" radio button. I've used the tool to successfully DL and install 1) Google Currents, 2) Onlive Desktop, 3) USAA Mobile Banking, 4) HBO GO, 5) Canada Post App, 6) UPS app, 7) Fedex 8) Hulu+ 9) all Amazon apps, 10) Realtor.ca, and many others. Till now I haven't run across any app I wanted that I haven't been able to install using the tool. Hope you have as much luck as I have with it.
After downloading the APKs to your computer desktop, simply transfer to the Prime via you're method of choice and install.

I tried to be as detailed as possible in my post (it was late, I was tired, perhaps I wasn't) which is why I went to the trouble of pointing out how I used my smartphone (the GS2) to carry out the procedure myself. I certainly don't claim to know exactly how the tool works behind the scenes, but I think it most likely needs to "fool" the source it accesses to DL the requested APKs into thinking the DL request is coming from a phone rather than a tablet.
In any case, there are probably many ways in which to retrieve a DeviceID. The method I went to the trouble of describing just happens to be the only way that I know how to do so. If you know of another... GREAT... use it. If not, then well, I think anyone frequenting these forums is probably clever enough to figure out/search for other ways.
In this day and age, I don't think that there are many tablet owners out there that don't also own or have access to a phone as well. In light of this fact, I assumed (perhaps unwisely) that readers of this thread don't require the same level of handholding/specificity that less tech-savvy members of the population might.
For those who've found other work-arounds to achieve the same end and are happy with their method, well, this post isn't meant for you. For others, like me, who've been seeking a simpler way, I truly hope you find the tool as useful as I have.

Just googled the tool and seems it's getting quite a bit of attention; certainly not unknown. Favourable reviews/mentions from well known and respected sites. I In fact, I seems like someone here at XDA beat me to the punch in extolling its virtues ... found link to an active thread in the General Section.
While there are ways to check out executables of questionable provenance (particularly a Java applet on a PC) without endangering/in a secure environment, particularly when link to said executable comes from a noob poster such as myself, you are wise indeed to be cautious! For the adventurous among you, check it out at your own risk.
Searching on "real apk leecher" (note the correct spelling), it looks like this tool came out a week ago. It wants your email acct, password, and device ID. At least to start out.
From the screenshot, the apparent dev, Nhat Cuong Mobile, is a Vietnamese outfit with website here: http://nhatcuong.vn/. However, it's a mobile phone sales & repair site, and I can't find any info on software development (I can speak Viet).
If you do try this out, be extremely wary.
If you're rooted try Market Enabler (in the market), change to code to whatever network in whatever country, force close the market app (drag it to App info, and force close from there), then open it again, and voila Access to all the apps you couldn't access before.

Will the Market Enabler app also open apps that are device specific? I. E., phone-only apps for tablets?
I know much of developers says.. why should i develop a great file explorer i can't root....
but im think some developer has great ideas too root it and im think wp8 is perfect with a great file explorer that can be
-- Look up files on sd card and devices
- extract and packed *.Zip files
- Send files per bluetooth
- Make a file share for lan!!! -> share it on local network
. supports a windows Local Network share in a lan to connect to computer and otherwise
- Mark up fileas and folder Copy /Past / cut
as how total commander or windows explorer look up

It is impossible. Don't think we didn't think about it. The system simply does not allow third parties to check on the file system.

We still don't have any solutions yet... Don't bank on rooting being possible yet. The article about the root certificate shows SOME promise, but doesn't make anything possible. Even though WinRT and WP8 run a similar kernel, there are some differences to the certificates. All we can do right now is wait.

this is an article about reading from the SD Card. Yes, that is possible but it means nothing to getting root access right now. You still canNOT read from outside of the Documents, Music, Pictures folders and the isolated storage of the local app you are trying to read. As long as you can't touch the System partition, you won't be able to do anything. So we are back at square one mate

im missing usb thetering on phone
Microsoft decided that phone apps should not be able to read most common file formats. We can't even read a god forsaken XML file from SD cards.

You truly are NOT getting the point are you... lol.
We are stuck at waiting until someone with experience can potentially find the smallest fluke to exploit. As it's looking right now, Microsoft put the epic lock & chain on WP8.
I am pretty sure they will make it possible eventually, just the way they did in WinRT. The kernels are not yet fully unified yet.

They didn't just leave it out, they left it out for a reason. The file system is a huge security vulnerability. They probably made it a priority to get it working on RT first then WP.

The operating system is clearly not a mallware.
Yeah... security is about preventing unauthorized actions. If I'm explicitly authorizing an app to access my filesystem (hell, make it a popup message box confirmation, like for apps that use the GPS), it's because I want the app to access the goddamn filesystem.
WRT at least still has Explorer and CMD and Powershell and such... WP8 lockdown is not about "security" in the proper sense, it's about control. The average user doesn't know enough about security to make good decisions there, but Android's popularity has only increased as it has gotten easier to root the devices. Meanwhile, iPhones (which are also all about control, and it's not in the hands of the user) are in a relative decline (marketshare, not absolute numbers) and have lost nearly all their first-mover advantage in the "modern" smartphone wave. Microsoft never had that advantage (they squandered what they had with WinMo and were late to the current wave) and their control-freak-ism is directly hurting them (as a random example, VPN apps were possible on Android even before there was on official VPN API; you just needed root).
A lot of developers have expressed their need to use the file system. I am sure Microsoft will eventually allow it.
