Skyrocket gets 2.3.6, why GS2 still on 2.3.4? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Ok makes me wonder how much love'n our GS2's are going to get as far as updates?
The Skyrocket came out with 2.3.5 and just got 2.3.6, and we are still on 2.3.4. Also the Euro version of the GS2 are always being updated and I think there are 2.3.6 builds out for it.
I'm confident that we wil get ICS next year, but it would be nice to get the latest Gingerbread while we are waiting.
I know a lot of people on here flash custom ROMs, but there are also many people like me who don't flash ROMs and find the stock ROM just fine.
Makes me wonder if it is AT&T again holding up updates or Samsung.

They're just numbers... what really changes between 2.3.4 - 2.3.6.
Wait for ICS

Besides, we have our 2.3.6 official ROM leak for a while now. What matters is who gonna get ICS first, leaks or official.

Well obviously something is different being as it's 2 newer version numbers.
Of course I'm not sure what that is. But it is nice to be up to date on things.

correct me if I'm wrong but just because one phone has two revisions "newer" than another phone doesnt mean its better. It just means it had more bugs to fix.

Sounds right. This is just a bugfix with the updated OS. Samsung knows the Skyrocket doesn't get as much love from the community either, so they have to fill in the gaps.

Not every Android OS updates are better than older version. 2.3.5 broke something (Voice search IIRC) and 2.3.6 is released to fix it.
Besides, the real reason AT&T/Samsung rush 2.3.6 updates for Skyrocket is because there is a wide spread internet connection issue with Skyrockets on non-LTE areas.

I am pretty sure you are exactly correct. I've read that the 2.3.6 was rushed into production on the Skyrocket to address some major bugs in the original release. Apparently there were a bunch of problems with Google Voice integration and the Android voice search feature, both of which work fine on our phones.

Most likely just because that new bug with powervr and privileges escalation they got the update to patch that.
We don't have the same hardware as skyrocket to we aren't affected therefore no patch for us.

Yeah this is pretty much the deal...although he is not my friend... a manager at AT&T who I am pretty cool with said they have had the update lined up since the 3rd day the phone was released.....it was all bug fixes.

Believe it or not, the 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 was updated by Samsung to tie into the whole APPLE vs/ Samsung legal lawsuit overseas... Apple won the suit and Samsung had to CHANGE touchwiz to avoid patent infringement on Apple's intellectual property. It was either SIDE or VERITCAL scrolling that had to get nerfed... Be thankful we didn't get hit with it yet...
Other than the SCROLL change, I don't think there is a MAJOR change from 2.3.4 on GS2 vs. 2.3.5/2.3.6 on Skyrocket...!

Wrong. The skyrockets was only release in north America, lawsuit doesn't affect us osgs2 or skyrocket. The data Issue was fix by at&t a week ago no software needed. There is an update from 2.3.5- 2.3.6 notice nothing new there but the phone feels smoother to me. At&t update priority is more on the skyrocket. Not that ya need it anyways. also as of today the vivid and the skyrocket are the only at&t phones officially getting ICS. You guys might never get an official ICS update.

You might, if you're lucky, get ICS by the end of 2012. (Look at how long it's taking the Captivate and Infuse to get Gingerbread.)
Same for us, HOWEVER unlike you we can pull ICS from the I9100. You're just AT&T's helpless ***** when it comes to waiting for updates.

[Q] ICS?

I know we don't have any ICS kernel sources yet but do you think we will get ICS before this August?
I thought I read somewhere that we were getting it in the next month or two. I would assume we would have a good working ICS port at the least in the next month or two. Can't speak for the devs here, but I thought that's what we were looking at. As for when ATT will push it out, that could be forever...I hate how long they take, but oh well.

Having used ICS on the captivate, it truly is an update worth switching devices for. However, I'm pretty happy with the I777 so I will just wait. Android updates that were actually really good: Froyo, Honeycomb, and ICS. The rest were just hyped too damn much and gingerbread is the worst of all of them (imho).

For one, it's not just ICS when Jellybean comes out, you're going to get it much quicker than anyone else. And also, it's the purest form of the Android version minus any bloatware each manufacturer puts on the phone, which can be either a pro or a con, but overall, the bloatware has been a con in the past.
IMO, Gingerbread was a very good update, Froyo didn't seem that special when I finally got it for my S7. The biggest improvement was non-broken radio firmware, which had nothing to do with Android version.
Gingerbread had significant power management improvements.

What the hell is your problem? Name one phone other than the Nexus line that has received ICS officially.
HTC hasn't released any updates yet.
Motorola hasn't released any updates yet.
Sony has only released betas (I applaud them for putting out prereleases)
Asus has only pushed it to one tablet (easier to port HC tablets due to HC being a newer codebase and not having to deal with the RIL) and that was an utter disaster
So far, my experience with ICS is that it's not an improvement over Gingerbread. I haven't been able to see any significant positive improvement - some parts of the UI are a bit shinier, but the gapps user interface is clunker than it was in GB. ICS has some good improvements on tablets, but for phones - not so nice.

First of all I said that I APPRECIATE the devs!!!! And I never said that the roms were official. Almost all HTC and LG phones have ICS roms. I left t-mobile with the htc sensation and believe me that phone runs 300% better now that it is running ICS. And by the way Entropy it is no disrespect to any dev by what I said, I am rocking your Kernel right now (Excellent job). I am pissed at Samsung and them only. Our phone is supposed to be a flagship phone so what the hell is the holdup?
If you can't wait then just go get the G Nexus. These questions have been brought up and beaten to death. Just don't be surprised when Ics finally drops for our device and our Roms are superior than most. GS2 surely has the hardware to run prety much anything smoothly and dev community is strong here

A long time ago, Samsung promised to release an additional update wih more S-Pen software and better functionality. I dont remember when, but it was at least a few weeks ago. Search aound and youll find it. Angry Birds space isnt an update. Its a completely new game. Just like Rovio does whenever it has a new theme...Rio...Seasons...you get the idea. So unless the Korean translations were crap (Sammy is known for their terrifying translations...remember the galaxy tab site?) this means that there will be a software update (either a ROM or a update for the S-Memo type apps) and a new "suite" of apps that we'll get from the Samsung app store that'll include a note specific version of Angry Birds space with a free bonus episode and(that others will have to purchase via in app purchasing), and a note-only bonus level.
In short...Samsung never once mentioned anything along the lines of a "value pack"...in fact, on the contrary. This is speak of a galactic update.
Not to mention the fact that there are already official ICS ROM leaks...and Samsung has announced the update already for couple countries.
If you had read the article and checked the source, you'd know that there is actually 0 evidence of this.
Weird logical leap. Note will get ICS.
They're skipping ICS and going to blow everyone away with JellyBean. Right?
It would be stupid for them to not release ICS for the note or the galaxy S II phones all these phones have great specs for running ICS. Besides if they don't release it there will be many roms available
Canadian carriers clearly show ICS available 2012 would really suck if they lie.

Sigh. =/ can you update us?
I don't have good news but I can share what the experience was for us Samsung Infuse 4g users.
We all started with Froyo and the promise of a Ginger Bread update. Here we are many months later still on Froyo. There was an official Update to Ginger Bread in the beginning of February that was promptly pulled because of all the issues it had.
When I saw that the note was supposed to be released with Ginger Bread with the promise of an ICS update ... I was stunned at the similarity of what Samsung was doing. I am almost certain we even got an Angry Birds update somewhere in August... yet we still to this date have Froyo.
With this in mind and the Fact that Samsung isnt being a speedy updater.. I would suggest moving forward and making the most of what you have right now.
I hope they release your ICS soon but the fact that there are leaks means nothing...we have had Ginger Bread leaks since october last year. Thus it is no indication of an official release. It is more like small teases to keep us on the string.
On the bright side we have had several great devs over at the Infuse 4g forums that made our lives a little easier. Taking the GB leaks and developing ROMs. Most of the ROMs were great and were indeed GB based ROMs. There were a couple of issues however. No Bluetooth and HDMI support as the kernels the devs had to work with didn't support them for some reason. I am sure they explained it a million times.. LOL.
Dman ... who developed several great ROMs and a few ports.. was amazing. I heard he now had a gnote. So cross your fingers that he will be doing some great work here as well.
To sum up...
Don't get in a hurry for an Update to ICS. Don't believe what Samsung or ATT says about Samsung updates PERIOD.
Myself....I will be holding out for the note until I see an official ICS.

Cool we have confirmation of ics!
For US phones, basically unless you get one of the Nexus phones, you should never expect to get any timely OTA updates. It's still mostly the US phone carriers to blame more so than the phone vendors themselves. Like I'm sure Samsung isn't actually intentionally delaying ICS forever on purpose.

Wow am I getting tired of reading these same press releases OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER...
Yea, we get it, ICS is coming out for the Note in the coming months.
Given Samsungs track record, it isnt going to happen anytime soon.
Given ATT's track record, it REALLY isnt going to happen any time soon.
What the hell does 'coming soon' mean?
Talk to any Captivate owner if you want to get an idea here. There were press releases and blaring horns about Gingerbread is coming soon for the Captivate and guess what? The Captivate just got Gingerbread 2 months ago, and ATT couldnt even be bothered to push it OTA, it has to be installed via a PC. Oh yea, tons of press releases about an imminent release of GB for the Captivate too. Shame it took a year to get anything out.
While I understand newer people that are not familiar with how Samsung works might very well be getting excited about this and feel the need to post every link they can find about some rumour and speculation (of an ICS release) or YET ANOTHER press release stating the exact same thing the 50 press releases released before have stated but trust me when I tell you, all of this is alot of empty fanfare.
The international version will get ICS soon (probably 2 months (my guess June) until they BEGIN to start rollouts starting with Korea and ENDING with the United States and finally Mexico probably late this year around Christmas time at the earliest).
So let me spell it out for you, it isnt going to happen very quickly and I really wish people would stop posting these links. There are fifty billion threads on just the ATT Note forums alone about how ICS will be coming soon with no details beyond 'its coming soon', 'yay for more apps that use the SPen', and 'hey, its ICS'.
*sigh*
Given ATT's track record, it REALLY isnt going to happen any time soon
Why is everyone hating on ATT for this? I mean I can hate on them for about everything else. Are they not the ONLY one to release an ICS update so far for a non Nexus phone?
They released it for the HTC Vivid. Has any other carrier released an ICS update for a non ICS original phone? I'm currious...

I think people are not exactly comparing apples to apples here. Comparing the note to the captivate is pretty stupid. Att is pretty well vested in android now where as they were not before the captivate. By the time they announced gb for it, there were much better phones out. With att announcing ics for the note now and not having anything else as a flagship device I can see them working a bit faster than the captivate. Also, att released ics for the vivid before the vivids counterparts from other countries. I'm sick of people acting like they're fortune tellers because they used to own a ****ty phone that didn't get updated because there were better phones out. Oh and I own a craptivate myself
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
The LG Thrill got it's update to GB around the five month mark so att is getting better at releasing updates faster.

I don't really care about the time frame. It's enough just to know it is being worked on. I am more interested in seeing how Google is going to kill fragmentation which ICS was supposed to do. People still have phones/tablets that will never see the update.

*sigh*

Why is everyone hating on ATT for this? I mean I can hate on them for about everything else. Are they not the ONLY one to release an ICS update so far for a non Nexus phone?
They released it for the HTC Vivid. Has any other carrier released an ICS update for a non ICS original phone? I'm currious...

[Q] Will you upgrade to official ICS or stick with stock GB?

my wife has an S2 and i'm not sure if i want to mess with her phone and update it if it isn't worth it...she is technically challenged.
so i am wondering what the majority of you will be doing, switching to official ICS or stick with stock GB.

Most of us have been on ICS for months.
Your wife probably won't even know the difference so I wouldn't worry about it

Reading about too many issues with the "official ICS" and went to SHOStock2 rom. ZERO issues and functions flawlessly for me.

if that is true, then i'm only hoping to hear from the few who do use official builds.

Don't update it. In my experience, technically challenged people don't appreciate it when their technology changes, sometimes even if the change is for the better. The phone works great on Gingerbread...if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

That's like going to a Chinese restaurant and only hoping to see pizza on the menu.
Seriously, though. . .if your wife is happy with GB and is not particularly interested in, or adept at learning, new tech there's no sense in updating just to update. As for the "official" update, the responses seem to be all over the place. . .from folks who love it to those who loathe it and say they're going back to GB. It really all depends on how happy your wife is with her phone as it currently is AND how prepared you are to deal with possible problems caused by AT&T's implementation of ICS.

Complete stock here. 4.03. Personally I think you should go through with it . Like others have mentioned there isn't a big change in the user interface . So your wife shouldn't have trouble figuring things out since there nearly identical. You can help show her some new features she may like such as full screen web browsing, the new task manager ,screen display or data manager. Then again you can always set it up for her so she doesn't even need to understand how to "turn on the feature"
Aside from the phone OS experience, I'd also consider apps. If your wife only uses Browser and Gmail, then stick with Gingerbread.
On the other hand, now that ICS is "stock," I would plan ahead for developers dropping support for Gingerbread - at least in some cases.
Apps from mainstream companies (Amazon, Netflix) tend to be extremely backwards-compatible, while smaller shops may focus efforts on fewer versions, and once you can guarantee access (carrier-provided stock ICS), that's one less version to maintain.
For my part, I wanted to try out the Chrome Beta. Won't run on Gingerbread, so that's a no-brainer for me.
For the record, I do not run stock, but I used the above logic when I went from a Gingerbread ROM to an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM.

App developers have to consider the market. Currently (as of June 1) approx 20% of devices are running 2.2 Froyo and 65% are running 2.3 Gingerbread. Those two account for 85% of the market. Only 7% of devices are running ICS. Not too many app developers are going to give up over 90% of the market and make their apps specific to ICS. See here for details.

Tried it and had some issues. On the subjective side I thought it didn't seemed as smooth as GB. Objectively I had some issues with notification sounds not working. Also the menu is different enough that it could be a little confusing at first for someone that doesn't like to mess with their technology.
I first Flashed the Stock ICS with CWM from AJ Newkirk to keep my root. The stock did not seem that much different than GB. I progressed to v6b of the Newkirk ROM with Touchwiz UX and other changes. Much more interesting. Then Flashed the new Shishir ROM with Touchwiz UX and the UCLE5 Modem and am experimenting with them both. Unless you plan on moving to the next level with the custom ROM's I would question if the update is worth it.
Thanks to AJ and Shishir for their hard work and speed to get their ROM's out.

Will Jellybean be supported?

Will we see support? or is this solely going to be on our developers for this phone?
By AT&T? Highly doubtful.
Release a free update to JellyBean and NOT force us to buy a new phone in order to continue to be supported?
Silly.
the support we get from the developers here far exceeds the support we get from AT&T...

Why doubt that AT&T will help us out? I'm sure if enough Galaxy II users call in and ask about an update it might happen. Wishful thinking but you never know.

because AT&T would rather sell you a new, subsidized device and rope you into a new 2 year contract than to use resources to push out an update that gets them zero income and might encourage some users to live out their two years and potentially go elsewhere...

As JB source code was released yesterday, we should see devs attempting to port JB goodness on the i777. AT&T will not push our I777 to 4.1. Highly doubt AT&T would support this device anymore...
To be fair, the Captivate saw an upgrade from Eclair to GB.... though it took forever. So, I wouldn't say it's highly unlikely, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

From AT&T officially, the SII already got its two free upgrades and that was from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 then recently to 4.0.3 so AT&T is probably going to put the SII on EOL (end of life) soon as they move on to the SIII, HOX and AtrixHD.
From XDA, it will more than likely be supported for awhile as its still one of the best devices ever created.
Even if at&t came out with an official release (highly unlikely) it would still suck compared to the work done by our devs here

AT&T has already killed off the i777. You can only buy the skyrocket in stores now. They would rather you buy new than update old. Look how long it took our phone to get "official" ICS... Dandrumheller is totally right - our faithful devs are powerhouses compared to AT&T. While AT&T wants to sell us something, our devs want to help. i'm sure 4.1 will be ported, just give the devs time to make sure things work.
I agree! The developers are still moving forward with JB for the GS II and I am hopeful that in 2-3 weeks we will begin to see progress in geting a functioning JB based ROM for I777.
Dont bet on it
I highly doubt we'll get JB. Took far too long to get a rough version of ICS, and I know AT&T won't hesitate to make any attempt to get us to purchase new devices/contracts.

Don't so sure, it might be a while, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28809953&postcount=43
Well I'm sure it'll be a while, but jelly bean isn't the huge upgrade that ics was. I mean it's a big jump, but imo(and that's all it is, my opinion)jellybean may be just a smoothing out and bug removal of whatever they couldn't get done in time to add into ics.

Why would you want to run a stock ROM from the phone company. There are good stable custom ROMs that are better, adopt features sooner, and have better support. For example, there's no better support you can get than from ShoStock2. If you have a question, and it's not abnormal, the developer generally answers you, one-on-one. If it's a real problem, and fixable, it will prob be fixed in a couple of weeks.
If you call ATT you have to get plassed to tier-2 then to an engineer who will prob say it will be fixed in the next release - which will be 12 months.
Why wouldn't you root your phone?? That's my question.
