[Tutorial] Installing alternative Keyboards on the NT. - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Shout out to yaggermr, He was the one who found the keyboard debug screen, and XIndirect for being a generally "rad dude."
The following is written for Hacker keyboard, but should work with Swift, and others. Some keyboards require more than one file to be moved to more than once place. Swype is an example of this. There is more than enough information in the next few pages describing what you need for various keyboards.
This procedure requires Root.
I can not be held responsible for any damaged property or loss of data you incur while running this tutorial.
Enable keyboard Debug mode.
Install an Alternate launcher and Root explorer
Install anycut: http://goo.gl/isvc1
Open Anycut, Create a New Shortcut.
Pick "Activity"
Pick "Android Keyboard Debug" (PROTIP: the list is larger than it looks, Scroll down!)
While you are there, create another shortcut for "Accessibility", and "Debug settings."
Return to your alternate launchers home screen and open "Android Keyboard Debug"
Enable Debug mode, and click Back. (Side note, you can stop here if you only want to change themes.)
Install an alternate keyboard.
Hacker Keyboard: http://goo.gl/AvZ08
Download your keyboard in APK form. DO NOT INSTALL IT WITH THE PACKAGE MANAGER OR MARKET
Open Up root explorer and navigate to "/media/My Files/My Downloads"
Copy "Hacker_s_Keyboard_v1.27.apk"
Now Navigate to "/system/app" and Mount as R/W
Paste "Hacker_s_Keyboard_v1.27.apk"(PROTIP: You may need to modify the files permissions, 777 will do here(that means on the permissions screen check all the boxes.))
Close every thing, and return to your launchers home screen.
Reboot your nook.
Enable The alternate keyboard.
Run the Accessibility shortcut you created earlier.
Under input method, select your new keyboard.
Thats it!

Hacker keyboard does look nice, but have you tried swiftkey or swype?

I don't actually mind the built in that much, but i know this was a heavily requested hack. So i did a write up with what ever i had around.

Cool thanks, it works. I had to reboot the NT before this keyboard showed up.

Thanks! This is hopeful. It worked for me but the version of Swype I used FCed relentlessly. perhaps a different apk would work but I don't have any idea how to find one. I used the one that the swype installer downloaded for me when it thought it could just install.
If it ain't Swype I'm fine with stock so I didn't try any others. BTW, I've used Swype on a tablet and it's brilliant.

Don't forget the libSwypeCore file. You need to drop that in the /system/lib folder.

When making the short cut under activity I don't have the option to pick "Android Keyboard Debug"? is there something else I need to enable first?

Sorry, I have a short list and don't have it either. I am rooted and everything works great.

mine the same only about 4 or 5 choices

The list scrolls. Scroll down, they're there.

I have numerous confirmations that this works. The App was not made for tablets, so the list looks smaller than it is.

Darn! I'll bet that was it. I had everything else in place. Is that a file the apk creates when you install? I couldn't find it on my device. Now I'm back to where I'll have to let the installer try the normal method just to get the main program back so I can copy it into root. Is there anywhere I can get the library file?
Is there any chance the program will just install correctly now that I'm rooted?

Doubt swype will install normally cuz nook tablet not an approved device.

Here's my swype.apk. Drop it in the /system/apps folder.
Here's my libSwypeCore file. Drop it in the /system/lib folder.
If it doesn't work, just delete them.

One more quick question. Should I do anything with permissions? I don't know jack about them but I'd be inclined to click all the boxes for user. I don't know what 644 means, never saw anything in root explorer like it but see it all the time in posts.

Sorry, I don't use root explorer. I use super manager's file manager and all it asks me is "R/W or Read-Only?"
I'm not a dev. just a nerd.

I pushed swift keyboard to system/apps with root explorer and after a reboot I was able to select from the accessibility menu. I freakin love text prediction!!!!!!

I haven't been able to get it to show up in input selection menu. I must be missing something.

Nice theme. Sent some donation love your way
i've been waiting for this! before i complain, i'd like to thank you, i'm such a huge fan of the stock android interface, the new blur stuff was making my eyes bleed..
is there any way i can exclude this from installing the droid 1 sms/mms app[mms.apk]? i'm using the modified sms app that comes with the epic rom and installing this theme messes seems to break it.
something to note- i used 7zip to browse through the theme zip and noticed a conversations.apk.
the interesting thing is that before installing your theme, the 'text messaging' app[conversations.apk] works.
after installing, i notice that there is an mms.apk. i used root explorer to rename it to .bak and the 'messaging' app that appeared after installing your theme disappeared.
but whenever i open 'text messaging' it just closes. no FC no error, it just closes.
Try reinstalling the conversations to apk by clicking it in root explorer. I got my terminal emulator to work when it was doing the same thing by doing that

Sure, just open the zip file and navigate to /system/app. In there you will want to delete conversations.apk
I actually didn't even notice it was different. I will add the stock conversation.apk later. Thanks for the info

Where did you see mms.apk? If you go to /system/app inside the zip file, there is no mms.apk... It must've came from whatever ROM you're using.

yea i think i may be mixed up. i have to do some testing, i'll report back.
i also noticed that putting this theme on top of the epic rom makes doubles of a couple apps.
for example, now there are two music players. when you try to open either, it asks what you'd like to complete the actoin with, 'com.android.music' or 'com.google.android.music'
i'll compile whatever errors i can find for you and report back

with some slight modifications i got it working flawlessly. i ended up using the theme porter to modify the sms app included in epic's rom to be themed to the stock conversation app included in you rom.
if anyone is interested i'll post it.
I'm assuming this has the Stock D1 icons (the ones in stock android 2.0-2.2)?
Is there any way I can extract those icons and put them in another theme?
you could locate the png, extract it, replace it in the new theme.
Updated to 2.45. Also added the d1 lockscreen. Creds go to ghostlypickel for the pngs.

Can't uninstall Swype

I have searched forums here at xda as well as others for the last hour and I can't seem to get the answer i'm looking for. I need to uninstall swype and swype installer but when I go to settings/applications/manage applications I see swype and I select it uninstall is greyed out. I've already switched to android keyboard i thought that was the prob but no luck. I tried uninstalling from Linda file manager no luck. I also tried root explorer. All i see in root explorer is swype apk no swype installer found. I'm running nero v2 with lag fix. I'd really like to know the exact path for both swype and installer if possible and/or a solution to uninstall both. Thanks!!!
try titanium backup. Works like a charm.

I tried that, Swype is gone now, but the new beta won't install.
I know that we're not supposed to go and pass along hacked versions of swype, and I'm cool without it.
I was just wondering if I'm messing something up during the install from the Swype Installer.
you also have to delete libswype from system/lib. Then after that reboot and it will install.

This. There are 2 system files that are used with built in swype installs.
Delete: Swype.apk from /system/app
Delete: libswypecore.so from /system/lib
I like to clear dalvik cache after that using CWR but it doesn't seem to be necessary.
After that you should be able to download the beta and install it.

Using es file explorer;
Change to different keyboard,
Open file explorer,
Press upper left button that looks like sd card,
Choose system, then app,
Delete Swype.apk,
Go back,
Goto lib
Delete libswypecore.so,
Reboot into recovery and clear dalvik cache,
install new swype.
Worked for me every time I tried it.

[TUTORIAL] Changing the ERI Banner from "Verizon Wireless" to your own text!

[TUTORIAL] Changing the ERI Banner from "Verizon Wireless" to your own text!
UPDATE 8/27/2011 - An even easier way has been discovered. Apparently, eri.xml can be decompiled and dropped in /data, and it works just the same, however, you will loose the changes if you wipe data; that's the only drawback (which may make the extra couple minutes to do a hex edit, worth it if you are using this as an anti-theft deterrent). Thanks to @chevyowner for pointing this out.
This is the easy way. No recompiling needed, no zipping up files, nada. All you need is a computer, a hex editor (don't worry, this is super easy), and Metamorph from the Android Market.
Download the zip file attacted and extract it to your SD card, for us this is going to be the internal sd card, although I guess it doesn't matter, just easier this way.
Open up your hex editior, I use HxD, which is free.
Drag and drop eri.xml file provided in the attacted zip, into the editor
Scroll down to 01E0
OVERWRITE "Verizon Wireless" to anything you want.
Note: You are overwriting "Verizon Wireless", do not backspace. If what you want is less than 16 characters, then after your text, go over to the hex side and fill the rest in with zeros until you come to 02 02. DO NOT overwrite 02 02 with zeros!!!
{

}
Save. Then move the .bak file (if your hex editor created one), to the desktop, next apply the "theme" in Metamorph.
I don't fully understand do you edit Eric file in downloaded zip or the stock one on your phone?

You don't need to edit anything from your phone directly. The provided zip file has the eri that you need to edit. Once your done, make sure the "ChangeERI" folder is in the AndroidThemes folder of your sdcard, then just fire up Metamorph.
Thanks 0vermind for all of your contributions. I can see rom developers using this for roms in the future.

Ugh. I wish 2nd-init worked for Gingerbread on our phones. I want to try porting over Honeycomb 3.2.
[/offtopic]
It worked...very easy it just is confusing when you say to download to phone sd-card you do that after you download to computer desktop and do the edit, then the theme program looks for the xml file, so unzip-do edits-put folder unzipped on phone and point theme program to changeeri.xml and go just to clarify...works great thanks...
Doesn't really matter which order for that step you can unzip to your hard drive or to you sd card.

Yeah im gonna try this later after I make a backup since the app says it had potential to mess something up. I might just be paranoid but I also couldn't get a straight answer of this being confirmed to work right on x2. Some people said yes and some said no lol. I know it might have been user error somehow but the app is so straightforward how could someone mess it up lol.
I think this should work but i don't use my x2 any more it just sits in its box.

Only works on stock, which is interesting. I wasn't aware of this method working at all, cause all I would ever get was "Roaming Indicator Off." Anyways. I'll update the OP. Unfortunately, if you happen to be using a rom other then something based on stock, or you wipe your data, it disappears, so it has it's drawbacks. Nice find though.

Does it matter how many characters? Do you have to worry about going over/under 16 if under just replace with blank space.
Has anybody tried to do this with any version of Eclipse 2.0.x? I tried, but was unsuccessful. The eri.xml file contains multiple "Verizon Wireless" entries. I modified all of them, then used metamorph and it says it could not find it.
Any help would be much appreciated. THANKS to all!!
Has anyone had luck changing the banner on a Droid 4?

(WIP) Not working right now.[Mod] Hulu flash 11 watch hulu.com and other sites!

So now you have this awesome transformer prime with its amazing screen. You want to watch some hulu but HULU blocks mobile versions of flash and instead forces you to use their app which requires a paid subscription. And even if you have hulu-plus some vids are for website viewing only!
Well with this modded version of flash, it tricks hulu (and other websites) that you are on a desktop version of flash, so they do not block it!
This mod is 100% the work of Vgeezy from thrive forums. i am just reposting it here.
YOU APPARENTLY NEED ROOT TO UNINSTALL THE FLASH PLAYER!!!
Instructions:
1) Download the apk
2) Uninstall flash on the transformer
3) Install apk
4) Set user agent in browser to desktop (open browser-setting-advanced-user agent string- desktop)
5) Go to www.hulu.com and enjoy!
If these instructions dont work try this: (Credit Cowballz69)
1) Set flash to always on on the browser
2) Disable pictures to make sure you boot original flash in market (browser-settings-advanced-uncheck display pictures)
3) Play any flash video with original flash app
4) Uninstall flash from market
5) Install modded flash.apk
6) play any hulu video now
If your flash settings are set to on demand u must scroll down and click the green arrow on the right next to "share this video" to enable the flash. otherwise u can keep flash on always on in settings. (i hate flash ads so i keep on on-demand)
For a frame rate boost u can go to browser-settings-advanced-and uncheck load images (thanks cowballz69)
also if u want an easier ui to access vids some ppl prefer http://www.hulu.com/widget/player but i think that is better suited for smaller phone screen
if u are having problems and it doesn't work make sure you have the new flash 11 installed from market, install the modded apk over top of that then uninstall Flash again and then install the modded apk. (Thanks MonsterAndroid)
I tried this on my original transformer using dolphin hd and it didn't work. It was installed but dolphin kept saying I needed to install flash player to view content. I'll try it on the prime to see if I can get it to work

Try the stock browser. Works on og transformer too. Also try rebooting after install. Sometimes you have to uninstall install to get it working initially.

No, it could be we will need root to remove it. On the original tf , flash wasn't a system app. Sorry for any confusion, I don't have my prime yet so couldn't test it myself.
If anyone with root can please try this it would be appreciated.

None of us have root yet. You may want to change the misleading title of this thread. It doesn't work for me either. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Type about:debug in your address bar and hit enter. That will give you deeper settings access. Press settings button an you'll see a label for debug. Hope this helps. BTW, when you type that into your browser and hit enter, nothing will happen on the screen, so don't be alarmed. Just hit settings.

Install - Dont if you dont know what your doing. You mess your phone up with this its your fault so dont cry to me about it. I take no responsibility for your actions.
Known issue: Links from others are the same color as the background. Visible if you tap the message on any text.
Added dark version, untested by me. Make a backup of your original if using.
Windows (assuming you have sdk/adb installed and adb path set)
Download attacked LGMms3.apk
Move LGMms3.apk on your pc to \android\sdk\platform-tools\ (or wherever you have adb installed)
*If using dark version be sure to delete -dark from the apk name
Connect phone to pc with usb
open command prompt as administrator
first type
adb devices and make sure it sees your phone
adb shell sysrw
adb push LGMms.apk /system/app
adb shell sync (not sure this one is even needed)
adb shell sysro

Phone
Use a root explorer copy LGMms3.apk to /system/app/ and make sure the file has rw permisions.
This method worked for me once with no problem but the second time resulted in force closes. So use at your own discretion.

Awesome, really sick of the stock themes but this looks great; will give it a try when I get settled at my temporary home.
Please help
tried the phone method and now i didn't have any sms app in my phone
it gone away!!!, please help!!!!
It normally removes the icon from your home screen. Look in your app drawer.
I used the Root Explorer method and everything seems to work properly.
Can you create a dark holo version? I tried too but just replacing the png didn't work, so I tried decompiling (keyword "Tried").
I'll attach the png I made to match the size and resolution of the other ones. At least I hope it matches.
PS: It shouldn't look 'streaky' on the phone. If it does, may just a plain black bg?
It's because they are .9.png can't just edit them and drop them in. But yeah I can add a dark holo tomorrow morning ish.
Edit: actually might have to be tomorrow or the day after.

Any help with this sentence "(assuming you have sdk/adb installed and adb path set)"?
I used to have sdk/adb but don't anymore and now I can't seem to figure out how to get it again.

For some reason adb didn't work so I pushed it with file explorer and like the OP said it is force closing. How can I fix?
EDIT: Got it fixed, deleted apk and fixed permissions.

You get the SDK from Google.
I'm pretty sure the freegee zip has adb bundled with it too. To use that you would just open cmd and navigate to your freegee folder and then run the commands.
It should also be in the root zip.
Edit:
Added dark version. Did not test. May or may not work, might not look right yada yada.
Make a backup of your original before attempting to use.
Apk attached to first post. Rename LGMms3-dark.apk to LGMms3.apk after download.

Yeah didnt even think about that, just edited the files i edited on the other one. Didnt need to do anything to that screen the first time. Ill update it when i can, think i have free time sunday. Not going to touch the dialer though. Dont even want to look at it but probably more .9.s to mess with then i feel like messing with. I just did mms as holo because i knew it would just be a few edits.

Do you reckon you could make this a .zip that we could flash, or an .apk that we could install?
