openSUSE 11.4 on Nook Tablet? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hey guys, I was just wondering if it is at all possible to run openSUSE 11.4 on the Nook Tablet? I just thought that it would be awesome on a touchscreen with its 'cube' screen.

At the moment, anything but the stock OS is not going to happen. First off, we have a locked boot loader which will prevent anything foreign from booting on the device. Secondly, not sure if there is a SUSE distribution for the Nook Tablet's hardware. (Presumably you could compile one given the right tools, but it would require a compiler, drivers, etc.)
Keep dreaming - it might be cool to have someday if we can get past the current issues.

You might want to do some basic reading. To start you off:
Android and GNU/Linux are very different operating systems (hint: the "GNU" part is important). Just because Android works on one device doesn't mean GNU/Linux will, and vice versa.
AFAIK the main headache in running a stock GNU/Linux system is that many Android tablets (both the Nook Color and Nook Tablet included) have proprietary drivers that only work on Android, and even then only with specific kernel versions. Very few hackers/volunteers want to do the work of porting proprietary drivers.
With all this in mind, apparently there are people out there doing this porting work so MeeGo can run on the Nook Color (not Tablet). You might want to look more into that.

[Q] Windows 8 On Galaxy Tab 10.1

So I'd like some help in figuring out how to get Windows 8 on the Galaxy Tablet 10.1...Where do begin, in order to make this happen?
It's very simple actually:
1) put the Windows 8 DVD into the galaxy tab
2) press ctrl-alt-delete
3) dunk your tablet in a lukewarm solution of flour, salt, baking soda, and milk
4) make up a raindance
5) do 30 seconds of research, including a simple search of the forums, before you post
You can actually skip the salt in #3. Usless step.

Same question i have been seeing in the Galaxy Tab 7, re-posted many times xD
Why would you like to see windows on tablet? if you want just simply go buy the new samsung Tablet ( laptop) with windows inside it

That logic is retarded.
You could say the same thing about any development thread were people are porting roms/os's to non original devices.
The whole point of XDA is to push our devices to the limits, this sometimes means putting roms, operating systems and apps on our devices that were never designed for them.
@ OP
You will not see Win8 on non-windows devices until devs find a way to boot the ISO/build and also locate drivers for them. Once this happens you wont need to create topics like this as you will just need to look for a few seconds or use search to find topic.
SSD in the Galaxy
I would guess that the Samsung Windows 8 tablet and the Galaxy 10.1 would share some similarities within the chipset, which would probably mean windows 8 'may' already have quite a few drives for the tablet.
Is there a way to access the SSD drive on the Samsung Galaxy as a raw device rather than MTP?
Windows 8 on any current android tablet won't happen, there are only x86 and x86_64 builds out, so until Microsoft comes with an arm build, doesn't matter if you can boot an ISO since the tablet is not able to run x86 or x86_64 binaries

Damn, I forgot, after you add the salt, but before you do the raindance, you have to create an ARM build of Windows 8. I always leave out an important step...
It seems you forgot that you need to use a Mac on Mars to do the Windows 8 build

<serious>This is the key sticking point for now. Once Microsoft releases an ARM build for Win8, there may be a chance of getting it onto the SGT10.1.</serious>
Alternatively, if you can find a way of booting your Tab using a .iso stored on another Tab, whilst repeating the correct initiation spell 3 times backwards then it's not a difficult process.
Less likely. The nVidia chipset in our tablets (got the 8.9) is crap. It struggles with HC... let alone a windows OS...
Also, what people don't realize is even if Microsoft releases an ARM build of windows, it won't run their normal x86 apps either.
You'd be surprised how many apps use managed .net, those apps will run nicely(ish) on arm since you got a JIT in between the application layer and the kernel level
It will probably be more likely to get a windows 8 tab and attempt a dual install of Android. Android 1.6 I believe was possible, I did it on my NetBook but with no touchscreen it was pointless lol
Hi @ all,
it is funny to see how XDA people react on a simple question.
Simple question <-> a lot of know how and strange terms...
The little OP stays there and take the arms up to the head and says: ahhhhh
Everybody from us know how it is when the know how grows, more and more.
But please.... never forget where we all come from based on the first day with a mobile phone and XDA was online. We all are beginners, every day when the sun comes up.
BTW:
Question for the OP: why do you want to run windows on a tab? Because it is possible, or it is your favior to click on popups?
Thats a serious question.
NOTE:
In the past (long time go) we had have printers as screen. Oops, that was to far in the past.
I was really there. Oops, how old i am?
PM:
Android is a good and stable OS and i hope it takes over Windows once. Long life UNIX...
OK. I have only one question. Why it is posible to install win8 on ipad one and two and not on our tabs?

Good lord, Remote desktop and installing are 2 different things../facepalm
You don't actually think he installed it on the iPad right? Then again I have ubuntu on 10.1, does that mean I installed it? :\
if you have an external HDD, how does it work with an android device like ss galaxy tab? does it recognize it? I don't have a tablet to try this. suppose I could try my phone, but it doesn't have a usb port and I don't have an adapter.
Try to use MacOSX...it's also LINUX based...TABUNTU re-writes the boot so that you see the familiar LINUX bootscreen, and something more,it recognizes our processor as x86,I know it's armv7 but That is possible and I am serious...

Dual Boot/Multi boot on NT - Android+(windows/linux/other tablet OS)

I'm wondering if it is possible to Dual Boot/Multi Boot Nook Tablet?
e.g. Android + Windows (of course the one for Tablets) OR Linux OR even iOS OR any other?
Anyone interested?
I can be part of this development, though i'm newbie in android world and mostly i'm playing with MatLab, C, C++, Jave (very less) etc. But i think i still can be useful somehow and i am also ready to use my NT for development/testing purpose (provided that i get some solution of backup/restore with apps installed)
thanks
I would consider looking up this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21323255
Adam provides a little bit of insight about dual booting from sdcard and more!

windows 8 doesn't work on the Nook. Only the devices which come out with windows 8 can actually run windows 8. ios also doesn't work because there's no source code out there. Linux is under development, I think it's Adam Outler who does that.
yes, for windows/ios, may not possible but i think, linux is possible. i have been going through the threads. actually due to some hardware issues, like processor etc. NT can't be generalized. also, even with rooting, we are still far behind in using its true capabilities.
CM9 is on it's way. Currently sound doesn't work, the kernel paniks sometimes and some minor bugs are the problems for the devs.
well, looking forward for CM9. i hope it will give more freedom than existing root...
I looking forward for CM7, maybe alpha version will be release few next days.

[Q] (Q) Ubuntu Install, Not VNC

Alright Being a Linux Nut, though not a programmer by any means, I believe I had mistakenly read that The Prime could have Ubuntu either install over writing Android and/or dual booting both and had run out and bought one as this would make my day,
Now to my dread I believe i was reading about the original Transformer and not the prime as this device is still bootloader locked, as a long search I have found nothing conclusive, could a dev or mod please give me the single one shot answer?
and how about the likely hood of that dual boot being ported to the prime upon bootloader being crack/unlocked?
Thank you
unix on TP201
It will come but only when the bootloader it released. at this current moment we cannot play with the boot sectors or load custom roms when this comes (sometime in Feb) you will see more on the dev forum

Haha I am with you on that! Only reason I bought mine was to dual boot Linux. It will happen. Meanwhile I am experimenting making arm images and using the vnc as a stop gap.

yea, it will happen.
Most kernel support should be straight forward, and if a compatible kernel is used as a base, even the tuxera modules (for ntfs and exfat) should be loadable.
One thing that will be needed to get the "prime" performance tho will be at the mercy of nvidia.
We'll need an X server driver out for tegra3 devices. I'm holding out hope that "netbooks" using the tegra3 will drive this ... friggin closed source crap
Having their driver also allow mirroring out to HDMI is also a big deal for me.
I personally am looking at ensuring a good "touch" experience (and also possibly utilizing the maxStylus), as well as getting a ps3 move controller to control it as a mythTV frontend
Thanks for the heads up, I guess I'll wait till feb to see if it comes to light or not, Glad to see I'm not the only one who bought this for linux through
The new Plasma Active UI from the KDE guys looks like it might be nice on a tablet such as the Prime. http://plasma-active.org/
Yes it does, though I'm a fan of Gnome, and a disposer of unity.. Unity its self is also supposed to be for tablets as well, choice choice and all in the Linux direction

Full Unix to replace phone?

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I moved on to another phone a while ago. But I have always loved my Atrix... Has anyone ever thought about seeing what kind of linux unit our phones could be? I mean, minimal phone code & use both processors for Ubuntu or whatever popular arm linux is available.
My main deal here is that the phone w/ the lapdock has always been an awesome wifi terminal. I just feel like half of it's processor is wasted running the phone UI. Anyone have any plans for a full linux Atrix project?
& yes, I already have ubuntop on my Atrix & have had it since it came out.
& yes, I know Canonical has already stated they are working on Ubuntu for phones, but the stench of their Vaporware is hurting.
It all comes down to the kernel. With the limited support we have for our device, it's hard enough trying to run android on the thing (ICS); an operating system which is "native" for phones, it'll be that much harder to port desktop Linux. Standard Linux kernel is starting to come with android stuff, but it's still going to need device specific patches.
Now if ubuntu comes out with a universal arm/tegra kernel, that would be kind of amazing.

Indeed, my dream is to one day have the ability to dual boot Android and a native Linux distro.

It isn't clear to me that the Ubuntu phone will actually be a "linux distro" - at least not in the sense that most think of them (Android runs Linux, after all). But, details seem to be scarce.
Plus, applications built for a mouse aren't going to be ideal even on a tablet. Otherwise we wouldn't have all those apps for services that are already web-based (including, ironically enough, xda).

Yes, I agree the new Ubuntu for mobile devices won't exactly be like its desktop predecessors. I was referring to what I've seen on other tablet development forums, such as the Asus TF300T running an Arch Linux ARM natively as a dual boot with Android. Would it be "ideal" on a touch screen tablet? Certainly not; but it wouldn't be completely unusable. Besides, I think that's why many of us are on xda in the first place. Because we're not content with running vanilla stock ROMs with our hands held out to to the manufacturers for fixes and upgrades.
Like the sound of this but only as a dual boot option for now.

I RDP .....*A LOT*...... from my N10 to my various Linux boxes now.... this would be a very welcome thing for me.
And.... to have another player in the mobile game would only be a good thing for us all.
Also, as the native apps are mosly C or C++, it would be interesting to see how much faster they would run.
