Will i be able to get ICS without "Blur" but keep Smart Actions etc. - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hey everybody, im new to this forum i watched the video and its awesome great job
anyway im going to get a razr anytime now, its going to be my first android device(switching from iOS). my question is kinda in the title will i be able to get the plain, stock ICS without Motos skin over it? im thinking about a custom ROM or something(ive got no experience whatsoever regarding this topic) because Moto probably wont provide something like this. Plus i want the 2 apps smart actions and motocast. Will this be possible? i know that probably no one knows this as ICS is not released yet but maybe its been done before on previous versions and with other manufacturers skins?
Sorry if this is the wrong section but i thought id would be better to specify on a device section not the general q&a....
cheers

First, WELCOME TO THE LIGHT SIDE!
ROMs are amazing beasts, my friend. I feel that the official MOTO version of ICS will not be Vanilla, but there absolutely will be Vanilla ROMs available after (maybe before) it's release.
In my experience, with enough tweaking, you won't need to root (unless you plan on using root only apps). I haven't, and won't root this bad @ss mamajama after covering up Blur with Launcher Pro, and setting up my icon packs, widgets and whatnot.
Really it all depends on what you want to do/use. There will be many (maybe too many) options coming soon. Just a tip (from a recovering flashaholic), if you DO root, and flash a port ROM, be prepared for things not to work properly at first (if at all).
I don't think a vanilla ROM with Motorola apps will be available, but really, anything is possible, and if what you want isn't available, you can cook it up yourself!
Gotta love Android!
Edit: Almost forgot! If you DO switch, order your phone through Amazon (by the 28th)! They're selling it for $0. 01! I did, and got mine the next day at no extra charge.

Yes, to answer your question. I also got mine for a penny. It's actually AmazonWireless. Go to Amazon and go to the bottom of the page for their link.

It's for new accounts and new lines only, though, just FYI. The only condition is that you stay current on your bill for 6 months. Even if you don't, they charge $250, which is less than retail (with a 2 yr agreement).

Eh. I don't really think it's worth it. Thanks anyways, guys!

hey thanks for the info, i guess ill just have to wait until motorola releases ics on the razr.
anyway thanks for pointing me at the amazon offer but ill be getting it without a contract so i dont think the amazon offer works

If you're going to be using this phone on a Verizon contract, it is most certainly worth it. $0.01 is far better than $299; you'll have an ETF no matter what if you cancel early. With Amazon, it's an additional $250 ETF if you cancel within the first six months. If you don't, there's no extra charge.

dont make you purchase on if you will be able to put stock ics on it, even with custom rom. Buy it for what it is. No one knows and no one will until it is out.

Pretty sure it's been confirmed a billion times that RAZR will get ICS... xD

yes i know its confirmed, but from motorolas side, meaning all with motoblur and all that stuff, just asking if there will be an unofficial version without motoblur. but well have to wait and see.

Great hardware, beautiful screen, and the Nexus S MAY lead to gingerbread soon. The ui is incredible and it's VERY hard to brick.
Our Dev support is amazing as well. A rooted/Rom'd Vibrant is pretty much the best it can get IMO.

It's a top-end device that should have 2.3 soon. It has the best screen and video chip of any android phone (except possibly the Nexus S), amazing for gaming and movies ... and basically everything. The contrast and brightness of this screen is unbelievable. Resolution is second only to the iPhone 4. Great dev support -- run Team Whiskey's "Nero" ROM
TL;DR

Maybe some hacked up dev version of 2.3, but it's not getting official 2.3 anytime soon, most likely never.
The question no one asked is what getting the free vibrant did for your handset upgrade qualification? If you can't get the full discount to upgrade for another 20 months or so, it might not be that great of a deal. The new, dual core phones with 2.3 will probably be out in February.
If it was free, and you aren't loaded, I would def keep it. I love my phone, and all the new roms coming out make me fall in love all over again each flash. I'm kind of a gadget geek, and I am constantly wanting the latest and greatest. I'm thinking about biting the bullet and getting the new mytouch 4g.

I think the general consensus on these forums would be that you need to root it, and ROM it. The stock android release that ships on it is littered with problems that power users like us can't handle, and Samsung doesn't have a thing on current vibrant developers who consistently make the phone amazing.
That said, 10,000,000 of these things have been sold and most people are oblivious to the issues on this phone. They use it and it's incredible hardware without issue.

Until the dual core phones come out, the Vibrant is the best phone money can buy IMO. It has the best screen in the business, a great loud speaker, super fast CPU and GPU, lots of memory and memory expansion, tough as nails to brick and the best developer support on the planet.

yea im going to do the same thing once my phone comes in. i just signed up for sprint today and my phone should arrive by saturday. last motorola android i owned was the cliq and it took them well over a year with the same promise to bring 2.0 or 2.1 to that phone from 1.5 after several delays. cyanogenmod had a stable release for that phone several months before the official update came out. by then i didnt even have the phone anymore lol switched to the mytouch3g slide.
By the time ICS is released in Q3......Jelly Bean should be out in the alpha stage
...just saying...
Maybe it will get here a bit sooner. At least this newer info will get rid of all the many posts about "Will Photon get ICS?". Very annoying. I never doubted for a second the Photon wouldn't get ICS. Google wants this on all devices capable of running it and have said so from the beginning. ICS is just slow rolling out it seems.
Anyways, for those of us that need full functionality CM9 isn't an option yet. One of the great things about the Photon is HDMI out and Webtop feature. I am not willing to lose those and as I understand there is no way to activate Webtop on CM9 yet. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. However, 4g I can live without (not in my area) and having the camera working now is a great step to final.

Also, if the Note only has GB and you want it cause you say the Photon won't get ICS in forever than why do you want a Note?? Sorry but your post seems like just jibbity jabber. How much coffee do you drink in the morning??

Ok, let me clarify. We all know Al will never be president, therefore, I believe although announced, Moto will pull the plug at some point before Q3.
Next, the AT&T note has GB, the Sprint Note, expected this summer, is expected (again expected!) to have ICS more over to top AT&T!

Sure, just like I got WiMAX 4G! Lets be honest, who here keeps a phone more than a year? If they pushed this to Q2 maybe, but for us to wait with all the new hardware coming out WITH ICS, I'm surprised Moto made the announcment, they could have saved the development work, but we will see I'm sure. And even with me getting the Note, I'm not getting rid of the Photon anytime soon. like 2013 Q2 if my income tax is late, haha!
As bad as the SGS2 is on Sprint, you better take a long look at the Note before you jump on it. Ill never own another Samsung device. They have officially lost me at this point. Im waiting for HTCs next big thing. They seem to be the best of the bunch from what we have to chose from.

I do.
It is a business phone so it is up to Sprint on when they will allow us an upgrade. If they are now on a 2-year upgrade plan for even businesses than I will for sure have the Photon for over a year. We can't afford to keep upgrading otherwise.
Also, wasn't it you who was just complaining in another thread about not having WiMax and "what if I want to keep my Photon for 10 years?" point? If you don't keep a phone for more than a year why was that even a valid point on your end?
Not trying to be harsh with these questions, just observations and curiousity mainly.

You mean the SGS2 where they are testing official ICS leaks right now as we speak?
I've not had a single issue with mine (nor with my wife's Photon beyond a few kinks which were worked out fairly quickly).

Will ICS on the RAZR affect development for us DX2 users?

I'm rather new(6 months in) to the scene of flashing roms and sbf'ing and scripting and this sort of stuff. My question is this, since the Razr is Motorola's latest creation and it is said to be getting ICS starting today with an update, will this update play any role in possible development for a full blown ICS AOSP based rom (similar to CM7, I would guess) but with the elements of ICS all in one place. Without having to piece it all together to just look like ICS. Any insight on this would be cool to hear. I'm just curious, and can't upgrade until 2013
Thanks.

sir, first off you posted on the wrong forum, dx2 android dev, i ask a mod to move this to general
and tbh, i have no idea if this would affect us, but i do know the razr has an omap ti chip compared to our ****ty, locked down tegra2
I thought about where to post this and development seemed suitable. Sorry if I broke some rules or something, it just seemed like it might get more attention here being a development question and not just a general question.

which i fully understand, sir, but i dont think the razr will help us much, because of the chipset
I guess I should have clarified more, now that I think about it, I was thinking more like, would it be possible to take the pieces out of the ICS rom for the RAZR and some how incorporate them into the one of our current roms? Just different elements of the SBF file or systemui.apk. Like I said, I could be blowing smoke and sound completely ignorant about the topic, but I'm just gathering thoughts is all. And please, no need to call me sir. I'm a noob here. lol

Quick Answer: Not like you are thinking??
We won't get Official ICS, IF dzk ever gets the time away from class, we will see a PORT of cm9(which is ICS), but we will probably 'never' get ICS or any ICS Based ROM for a while. Too much stuff to do and not a lot of devs...also, personal life gets in the way a lot over on this end of Android.
It looks like the RAZR is already on the verge of taking the back seat to whatever Motorola/Verizon have on the horizon (Droid Fighter). I get an upgrade next month and have my fingers crossed in hopes that a variant of the HTC One X will come to Verzion (I would settle for an HTC Droid Incredible 4G at this point). This locked bootloader will be the death of development in the foreseeable future, if anything. Motorola makes solid hardware but doesn't want to us to play with it. It's a damn shame.

True its a shame. The locked bootloader is a big reason I gave up on my X2. The possibilities on the phone could be endless if they'd unlock it but that will never happen cuz Motorola is Big Reds B$%ch. But dragonzkiller still might pull it off for u guys with cm9 in his spare time, and hopefully he will.

It's been said already, but there is no way in hell the DX/DX2 are getting ICS from Motorola. Dragonkiller is probably the best bet and I know he mentioned in another thread he had lots of personal life stuff till at least summer.
Simple answer: No one should be buying Motorola. Send them a message. The Galaxy S III should be out soon and HTC has a decent quad core in the pipeline. Stop buying Motorola phones!
My DX2 does run better then my DX did but that's only because of DK's CM7 port. If VZW's insurance company did not give me the DX2 for a replacement of the DX I had, I would have never owned this phone. It sucks you have until 2013 but with any luck a CM9 p
ort will get done. In 2013 if the world has not ended yet and the time finally comes for your upgrade, I hope you remember Motorola screwing you and not buy another Motorola device. Don't buy into the owned by Google thing, they are still the same company and play by the same rules. Have they removed the encrypted bootloader? No and they won't because Google may own them but they are not interfering with any of Motorolas business practices. Also don't forget Google has become VZW's b*tch lately too so don't expect Google to stand up for you.

I've been waiting endlessly for the Incredible 4G but 2 things happened recently that has thrown a wrench in my plans, Verizon trying to do away with the grandfathered unlimited data users like me and my Incredible 2 has decided to take a huge crap. My contract is up but I'm afraid to renew it till they give us more information on the whole deal, that and I don't wanna waste my upgrade till a really awesome phone comes out. I do hope the Rezound is as good as all the reviews I've seen about it. I have been drooling over it ever since it came out back in Nov but it's over 6 months old now. What do you guys think? Also I don't know if I will root it or not. Thanks
probably too late to worry about it now...
Nope! We all hate our phones. Very bad choice.
True! Just seeing what people who already have it think about the phone since I've never got to mess with one. Although I can get a refund if I decide I don't want it.
It's an awesome phone. I think it will be the best you can get on Verizon for a while longer still. Why wouldn't you root it? If you bought it off Ebay, you shouldn't have any warranty issue to worry about. You might want to wait till after the official ota to ics though...
I do like rooting, it's fun just to do it but I probably try 50 different roms till I find one I like that's stable
Isn't flashing 50 roms half the fun of getting a new phone?

Not entirely, I just flash what I feel is stable, yet featured packed.
Part of the reason I'm waiting patiently for CM9.
Yes its a great choice

Lol cm9. Like the second apocalyptic coming ; Your supposed to believe it , never ask for ETA, and be on your best behavior at all times .
Lesson learned... Don't buy a phone for possibility of development .
If it sucks with stock , then your sol if your developers up and leave.
Ask not what your developer can do for you, ask what you can do for your developer.
I've always told people that a phone is only as good as it is stock, I forgot my own words because I needed a new phone and Rezound was best choice and I banked on development being like previous HTC phones, I'm not asking for ETAs, etc. I've been here long enough to know this. I took a chance and so far so good.

You made a really good choice sir. HTC Rezound is one of the best VZW phones. I love the true HD LCD, once you take a look at this screen you won't want to go back to anything alse. Very speedy with the 1.5 dual core processor you can fly through your apps.

It is a great phone stock and is even better with some ROMs and work
Fantastic choice. For all intensive purposes, this should have been called the Droid Incredible 3. I just upgraded 2 weeks ago ish.
I would go for root. It's an easy one to do, but if your used to clockwork, go Amon Ra on this one. Haven't tried clockwork, but i heard it has many problems. MIght I also suggest clean rom 1.7 if your going gingerbread? and SirGatez's tethering fix of course!
I just got one today, and Im wondering the same thing!
Definately can't go wrong with the Rezound. Especially if you got a good deal on it. Also rooting & S-off have made this phone very enjoyable. Plus this is one of the better communities that I've ever been a part of. I hope you enjoy your Rezound as much as I enjoy mine.
Have had this phone for one month, usually root and flash custom rom right away. This phone works so good right out of the box, very fast, best screen, everything just works. This phone has the strongest signal and best radios of all Verizon phones IMO. Great Phone.

[Q] Is all ICE/JB deployment for Flyer stopped?

Is all ICE and JB deployment stopped for the Flyer?
None of the roms works correctly and none is updated recently!
Whats up with that? Should i just make my flyer stock and sell it or is there still hope for it?
depends on what you're looking for out of the flyer. I personally jumped ship for the nexus 7 and couldn't be happier, although I do miss pen input a lot. everyone has just had classes start so if they are in high school or college that can also cause a slow down. the flyer isn't dead yet!

I really hope so. And no i do not use the pen at all.
The only reason i bought the Flyer wash because it was cheap. 1000Kr ($175) about 1½ year ago. Today it's installed in to my car dashbord.
I would love nothing more than to buy the Nexus series. For the sole reason of quick updates. But only Nexus and Nexus S phones is sold in Denmark.
Honestly Ira the same reason i bought it, i live in Sweden though.

Looks dead to me
Flyer
yea does not look promising anymore ; Dexter away on other devices and out of options, Chaos never really return after vacations - asked for remote acces PC wich he never decide to use after set up,... so more or less game ower as far as software goes. Try to find optimum out of what we have; i use GB and works awsome for me.
As for Lee - will see -maybee but prolly not.
Stock gingerbread is the way to go no doubt.

Okay, I'm considering "downgrading" to this.
Do you think it's a lot faster?
What rom is recomended?
Can you get rid of the horrible default set shortcuts in the bottom of the homescreen?

If Dexter isn't working actively anymore on the device, than sadly agree that development is pretty much dead. Hate to say such things, since if any devs are working on this device, its probably a bit of a discouragement for them to see threads talking about development being dead. But its really not looking good. Its sad to go into Development day after day, week after week, and see nothing updated or new.
Such a beautiful piece of hardware that too at dirt cheap rates and alas! no further development on this.
Long back I had an optimus one (600 mh) and sold it about a year back. It's such a small piece of hardware compared to our heavenly HTC flyer, but development on this phone is going on amazing well. It's having unofficial cm 10 as well.
Chaosz was going so well.
I wish and hope as this device will further be sold at even more reduced prices, even used ones, some interested developers might still pick up this device and.contine the development.
But for the time being it seems certainly dead.
There is still hope that Chaos and Dexter will collaborate and maybe combine the best of their ROMs, so that we could get a better JB for the Flyer, they only need some free time. So, until they are gone from this section - the development is not dead yet.

Your experiance dealing with Flyer will be lot faster. With proper luncher ull have same feeling like on ICS/JB (holo launcher - highlly recomended).
As for rom prolly best would be FlyHIGH.

Its probably the one of fastest out there for our device. I recommend stock htc with sense. You can change those shortcuts to what you prefer. I say give it a chance for a day.
You know, these devs create ROMs for free.
Dexter is still working on JellyBean and has a version 1.7 out that's really good and works as a daily driver. Perhaps we should organise some money to say thank you?
I know a bunch got burnt donating to DG for nothing to appear, but if a rom has already been released, can't hurt to contribute to the developer to keep going.
thanks to Dexter

i wholeheartedly agree. Dexter continues to look out for us despite having a GNote2. And really because of him the flyer isnt dead yet. and for the longest time he was doing it without a donate button. i noticed that just recently he had a donate button. i suggest that those who appreciate his efforts throw some beer money his way [or whatever his choice of libation may be:laugh:]
Dexter working very hard now. I'm believe that he make perfect ROM for us.
I wanna donate to him, but i haven't money for it now. :C
