HTC Hero 1.6 Update - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm asking on behalf of someone else still on official OTA 1.5.
Should they upgrade to 2.1 or per my advice go as far as 1.6 Donut which was the last rock solid release from Android? It'd be best if they stayed on the stock ROM.
Current baseband is 63.18.55.06EU-6.35.06.18
I can't for the life of me work out what RUU is for what version of Android/release in the below thread so if someone can point out what's what then that would be lovely.

go as far as 1.6? 2.1 is the most updated stock rom for HTC Hero but are you sure they want to update to 2.1 ? the link you have shown is only for the HTC Hero Radio which isn't the Operating System and would't change much you want thishttp://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Hero/RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_3.32.405.1_R_Radio_63.18.55.06P_6.35.15.11_release_signed.exe
That is stock 2.1 and and is better than 1.6 Dohnut but i would recommend rooting and installing Froyo 2.2 as most applications run on 2.2 and up [ not all but most new applications ]

At the moment, every android phones has been update to 2.3 ( most of them ). I think you should root your phone, unlock bootloader, flash recovery and update it . Wildheroc Rose goku 3.6 is good idea.

new hero, Modaco or updated official hero in lieu of 2.0 sense update ?

Hi guys, I was all set with a rom for a 32a magic but the phone company i was buying from ran out and upgraded me to a hero and in light of the updated speed of the latest official htc firmware and the announcement of 2.0 sense update in the pipeline im wondering whether to load modaco on it on monday (the new hero when i arrives) or just run the htc update and stick with that till 2.0 comes..
basically - is modaco likely to be updated when 2.0 is out and would it require a wipe even if i had been on the current modaco ?
or is there enough speed /stability from the htc updates anyway?
anything that will stop working /become unstable with modaco?
before i put any apps on i'll either put htc update or modaco

everything depends on one's needs. my advice is to try them both and see what suits u best.
What i can tell u is that you wont encounter instability with neither of them.
cheers and good luck with flashing
cool , well i think I'll do that before i load anything on besides my google account, but everything can be backed up easily before a wipe according to the other reading im doing, thats great!

Stupid question?

Hi all
I'm a complete newbie to the Android, but in the four weeks I've had the HTC Hero, I've set up email, downloaded loads of apps etc, but I've started to notice some problems.
I was advised to upgrade from Android 1.5 to Android 1.6 ahead of the upcoming release of 2.1, but I want to backup all my apps, email settings, messages, etc. so I don't have to start again after the upgrade.
I've been reading through the forums for a few days, and can't find a simple guide. I've found a lot about "root" but nothing about what root is! (As I said, I'm a complete newbie)
Any chance someone could post an idiots guide?
Many thanks
You know...The problem doesn't even exist!! Are you happier than before huh? ...Why? What? Didn't you know? F***ing HTC won't release ANY 2.1 update for our Heroes until 26th of April! Oh sure, you could upgrade to 1.6 but....NO! You can't! Because HTC has decided that 1.6 upgrade will never be released! Oooorrr...You could read some guide about "rooting" your Hero and installing a custom rom This is the best and quickest way to get 2.1 features without waiting for official HTC upgrade. Even because when the new firmware will be released maybe there won't be the possibility of rooting again the phone! So you're forced to use stock rom! And if you don't like it...Well...go to hell! XD (By HTC, not by me obviously...). I can only suggest you some "short" readings and a particular 2.1 rom:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superuser (aka root user)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654030 (The most stable and fastest 2.1 rom at the moment)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124 (The most powerful and friendly modded recovery)
So read, read and read! Then, when you think you're ready, try to root your Hero, if you're not able to do it maybe you've got a perfect SPL...But this is another story...
Oh..and (google)search, (google)search, (google)search //A sort of casting....
+1 MARDURHACK.
A few more things here,...
Have a read of What Can I Do With Root - INFO
Then check out [Guide] Newbie Guide to Install a Custom Rom
....Then when you get to the bit about installing your custom ROM, use the link that MARDURHACK provided if you want to try out a 2.1 ROM. Or you can have a look at the other ROMs available in the development section here at XDA.
I had my Hero for about 3 weeks but wanted a 100% stable ROM, so have opted for the MODACO 3.2 ROM. It is Android 1.5, not 2.1. You can get that from HTC Hero section @ MoDaCo.com
.... I can confirm, its the dogs bollocks!

[Q] Does an "official" update "flash" the whole phone ?

Coming from a WM background I am used to flash ROMs and lose more or less everything...
How does it work with a X10 moving to 2.1 ?
Will my GF phone lose everything that has been installed once it is updated ?
Thanks and sorry for the X10 newbie question

Ask again when 2.1 gets released.
Ok, let's forget about the 2.1 thing , what about from 1.6 to 1.7 ?
Did the 1.7 update start from fresh ? That will give me an idea about the future I guess
Thanks
I am supposed to install my GF new phone, and I just want to know if I should wait for the end of the month or start today

"1.7", we're all still on 1.6.
Backup the phone, as the chances are it will wipe the phone.
In answer to your question.. couple of background points first for your benefit..
the current version of android for x10 is 1.6.. we are due to move to 2.1 shortly..
however, the android version is only part of the picture.. SE have developed their own build on the top of that and there have been several versions of this Firmware since the phone was launched..
My experience.. I seem to recall the phone being reset when I went from R1FB014 to R1FB016 but when I updated to R2BA020 and more recently to 026 I was given the option by SEUS to retain current config and just update the firmware in the background..
I don't know though if the change to 2.1 will be the same because it contains some fundamental changes so a complete reset might be needed.. but I don't know for sure.. in this case, only time will tell..#
Hope that helps.

How to downgrade to official 2.2 from 1.5.3 ?

Despite all the excellent work by Steve & the other boffins here in this forum, I continued to experience instability (a few random resets & freezes daily) on 1.5.x
I guess stability is more important than flexibility for me atm, so I'm thinking to install the official Dell 2.2 as I hope it will put an end to my woes.
Grateful if somebody could please advise me the procedure to go about the downgrade and where to find the official 2.2 package I will need. Do I have to downgrade my BB too? If so to what version?
(I originally went from stock O2 1.6 to 2.1 then to 1.5.1)
Thanks for your input.
Current status: O2 unlocked Streak running DJ_Steves V 1.5.3, baseband GAUSB1A131800-EU
Flash stock recovery then upadte stock 318

Just to ensure I understand correctly, borijess, you saying I should flash this first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840326
.....which will then enable me to go straight from where I am now to 318 ?
Edit: Nevermind, after some intense googling I found a step-by-step guide of exactly what I'm after right here: http://forum.pocketables.net/showthread.php?t=8285.
Thanks again borijess for having pointed me in the right direction - I wouldn't have known what to search for.

(Q) new dell streak 5 (2.3.3) user

i bought this 2nd hand an unlock. i was just wondering if there is anyway i can downgrade it to official firmware like the old ones like 1.6. i lik just the old firmwares interface cause its unique in any other android OS. thanks a bunch
are you talking about dell stage?
I'm in official stock rom and I suggest you to downgrade to official stock rom 2.2.2 351 or 360 instead of 1.6 because of lots of bug fixed, improvements and new features.
@djjc: He's talking about Android 1.6 (Donut), and I'm not sure that downgrading from 2.x to Donut is possible on the Streak. I vaguely recall reading that to go from 1.6 to 2.x required using the QDL tool to configure the board and internal MicroSD to accept the update. I think that was a one-way process.
The person most likely to know with absolute certainty is TheManii.
With all that said, in my opinion even if the OP can downgrade to Donut, he shouldn't. Trading the bug fixes and improvements of later versions of Android for an interface hack that only worked in Donut is not a wise choice. Plus he gets a much smaller Market to boot since a great deal of the apps require 2.0 and up now.
2.1 had the same UI as 1.6, I dont think it was called StageUI back then.
StageUI was launched with 2.2 and it was StageUI 1.5, so the one in 1.6/2.1 could have been 1.0?
Regardless you cant directly downgrade from 2.2 -> 1.6
you must go 2.2 -> 2.1 -> 1.6 as 1.6 recoveries wont load on a 2.2 bootloader device.
Install 206 from Dell Streak Official Roms - xda wiki if you want the UI, it's 2.1 and has the 1.6 type UI.
2.1 is very old though, and 206 isnt the most recent 2.1 rom, it's the newest one we have as a pkg that can be installed though. The newer 2xx ones were only available preinstalled.
More and more things are slowly requiring 2.2/2.3 so dont expect them to work regardless of if you use 1.6 or 2.1, things such as flash.
If you decide to downgrade follow TheMannii's instructions to get to 2.1 and here is a guide for going from 2.1 back to 1.6.
I must say that I do not understand why you would want to do this.
