[Q] Confused about getting the NT rooted - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Just brought the Nook Tablet days ago.
And yes, I'm a noob about this stuff.
Don't know if i should get NT rooted.
If yes, I would like to know if there's any problem or rule that I need to follow before and after the root.
(e.g. Need to install anything necessary, Can I "unroot" the NT whenever I want, Is the root permanent, etc.)
If no, why? Because NT can sideload others apps? Or any other reasons?
Please help me with these problems.

You could probably get most of the functionality you need by just sideloading the amazon market and any missing apps you need.
I won't comment on the risks as there is already plenty out there to read. I do know that resetting the nook to stock is as easy as holding down the power and N button during startup and waiting 5 minutes. This may only fix the 'softest' of bricks, but did indeed remove my root privileges.

I would try just sideloading apps first.
Remember when you root you void your warranty. So make sure it is what you want to do.

Didn't remove root, just removed the superuser.apk from your device. I promise that the su binary is still there....You need to run a script from the device I created that removes gApps and su since it is all really hidden in the /system folder and the format doesn't touch that. Another way is to type "echo -n '0000' >/bootdata/BootCnt" into adb shell or terminal emulator and then erase and deregister device and it will wipe everything including /system.

[NEEDED] TEMPORARY Bloat disable/uninstall or else Perm Uninstall+Reinstall

From what I've seen (e.g., Bloatware Disabler and ViperMod), the bloatware zappers out there are all permanent and thus survive a reboot (unlike the root itself).
I'm one of many that wants the option of a one-click root that is totally temporary but does everything you'd want (overclock, Hulu fix, etc). The missing piece of the puzzle here is a temporary bloat disabler or uninstaller.
Does this kind of mod exist? If so I'd be happy to incorporate it into my existing one-click roots.
I'm guessing that if the changes are non-permanent (i.e., are undone at reboot) then the best we can do is FREEZE and not uninstall the apps, right?
If that's true, I propose two roots: Root 1 strips out all the bloatware, overclocks, roots, etc etc (all the good stuff ). If you want to return to stock, Root 2 will reroot, REINSTALL THE DELETED APPS, then reboot so that you're back to stock in terms of system files.
Going either direction on this will, I think, be a step in the right direction.
(PS: I apologize for my noobishness; however, I've been creating some helpful tools for people recently and I think this is the next step, but some overall guidance first would really help! Please consider my earnestness before flaming! )
THANKS IN ADVANCE
The way pm disable works on apps and packages is permanent. You can do pm uninstall com.htc.taskiller (for example) and it should work, I have never tried it. Im 100% sure it will come back on a reboot, though. With vMBM, you can just enable everything from the Advanced menu in a few seconds. Were you aware of that?
I really like where your headed with this. I did manage to delete a single file and did an install of swype and it seems to be the only thing that sticks after reboot. Think it was the install file from oem.
has to be something to remove to prevent apps from reinstalling them selves.
Btw, after you ad this to your mod script when finished, can you throw in apfree install. Thanx in advanced.

So you're saying that Vipermod simply freezes the apps, and they can be re enabled easily from a menu? Do apps stay frozen Thu reboot?
I guess what I'm thinking here is that I want a root that 100% strips out bloated (so I guess uninstall) but which either does NOT persist Thu boot or else can be restored later with one click deeply (i tried to explain this in OP. If I understand vipermod correctly, I think that'd be the second best option (merely freezing apps). Of course, in the preceding I'm assuming that uninstalled is better than frozen, all things being equal.
What do you think?

Right--my assumption is that with temp root I could go in and delete a **** ton of system files and totally destroy my phone--right?? Basically, to reiterate, BECAUSE WE'RE IN THE WORLD OF TEMP ROOT ANYWAY, AND REQUIRE FREQUENT REROOT, IF I'M GOING TO FREQUENTLY REROOT I MIGHT AS WELL HAVE THE OPTION TO NOT ONLY STRIP OUT BLOATED BUT **ALSO** QUICKLY RETURN TO STOCK (FOR WARRANTY, SERVICE, ETC.) Can you offer some guidance?
As to Adfree, there's no need to add that. I only want my oneclick to do stuff you'd otherwise have to do manually after rooting. This isn't necessary with Adfree--after root just use the fast reboot app and address works fine, no? (or does it NOT work? Angry Birds seems to have LESS ads but isn't totally adfree--I've been assuming it was simply "beating" the adfree app.)

How about just freezing apps with titanium backup? It sticks with a reboot and only takes a single click per app to freeze/unfreeze.
tapa tapa tapa
Titanium freeze uses the pm disable. Pm disable will stick through reboot. If you want to not have a system app only til reboot, just delete in terminal or with root explorer. And I believe a data/factory reset wipe would restore frozen apps

Require frequent reroot... Sorry to hear that. Only happens to me if I let battery run completely out.
Return to stock... Can't you use RUU for that?
Adfree... I've had really mixed luck with.
AS For bloat, I use titanium backup. No problems on my end.

Correct, it uses the pm disable command on apps. It stays after a reboot but can be easily re-enabled after a reboot.
basically this guy wants a script similar to vipermod that "rm stupid.apk" from the /system/app directory instead of "pm disable" which is very very simple. that way upon reboot it all returns

So I guess I'm confused. If i temp root, then go into root explorer and delete all kinds of system files--they'll come back after reboot?
And yes, my root sticks til a true reboot, but not thereafter. Isn't that the case with everyone?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
If you disable the app in titanium or thru adb then the .apk file still is on the phone..but NOT usable or loadable...if you uninstall the app then the file is off the phone...then if you do a reboot....the phone will reinstall the programs you deleted but the disabled apps stay disabled, invisible to the machine but the apk of that program is still on the machine..usually in /SYSTEM/APPS or /DATA/APPS. Ugly but it works like a charm. And from what I read...it is for everybody....hope this answers your question.

As said above yes they will come back. You have no write access to system. So although you think you are deleting them, you are not. You are only "deleting" them from cache. Disabling them, actually writes to an xml file in the data directory (which apps have access to). If you have fast boot turned on, you are not truly "rebooting" and that's why root stays.

Great news sideloading with 1.4.1 solved!!!

The folks at liliputing have just published a fix for the 1.4.1 upgrade that will allow normal sideloading just as was possible with 1.4.0. All that is necessary is that you must have enabled sideloading when you had 1.4.
ROOTING IS NOT NECESSARY!!!
Here is the link to enable 3rd party apps in 1.4.1
http://liliputing.com/2011/12/sideload-apps-on-a-nook-tablet-with-os-1-4-1-no-root-required.html
Here is the link to enabling 3rd party downloads in 1.4.0 if you don't have it
http://liliputing.com/2011/11/how-t...ok-tablet-amazon-appstore-go-launcher-ex.html
Now quit yer bellyaching and get to work. Merry Christmas
Special shout out to Indirect for pointing the way to this simple work around for the rest of us.

Forgive me if I misunderstand. But that means it's still NOT possible to do it once you have 1.4.1? I'm worried because I'll be opening one tomorrow and don't know if I should even turn it on until I'm ready to root it.

Don't worry. I turned mine on for the first time yesterday. Registered and downloaded the tgps apk and did some surfing around for about 30 minutes before turning wiring off without it download the update. I was able to do a successful root and launcher install following Indirect's thread. You'll be fine as long as you can follow simple instructions.
they show you how to do it using ADB, honestly this is not easy for the average user and very inconvenient. It is easier to follow a video on reverting back to 1.4.0 and block OTA IMHO...
To give credit where it's due, the tutorials on Liliputing are based on information (and tools) gathered from Indirect and AdamOutler at xda-developers.
I just tried to flesh things out with a slightly more detailed walkthrough and photos.

Has anyone actually USED this with ADB???
I mean, you need to have USB debugging enabled in the NT after the upgrade, and I think the upgrade resets it. It certainly is now reset in my NT, and I'm fairly sure I had it enabled before the 1.4.1 upgrade.
On the Acer A500 section of this site, someone has posted a trick to gain root if:
You have root and apply the trick.
You update to a new version that removes root.
You can then access the device via ADB.
If there's a way to turn on USB debugging in 1.4.1 (I still have command-line access via ConnectBot, just not root access), that would be nice. Or, if someone knows a non-root app that can do it, I will:
Revert to 1.4.0.
Root it.
Install the trick.
Upgrade to 1.4.1.
Enable USB debugging.
Use the trick to regain root access.

You can use NT Hidden Settings but naturally it has to be installed before the update.
I played around with 1.4.1 before reverting and adb install works. Root is the real kicker for me though because I use the host file for ad blocking and I use button savior. Both require root.

With what? Are you getting this with the rooting tools? If so, have you been able to reenable USB debugging? Because without that, the rooting tools won't work.
no, i haven't rooted mine, but i read this script works for the unrooted tab. was i mistaken?
Device Not Found Error
I was able to sideload 5 apps using the Indirect instructions. Then, I needed about two more apps and that's when I received the device not found error message when trying to sideload Launcher Pro.
I have the install third party box checked and both USB debugging boxes and nothing in the auto mount. Although, I tried it with both USB boxes checked and the auto mount checked still the same error.
I even started from scratch in DOS and got the same error.
Any suggestions?
---------- Post added at 09:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:15 PM ----------
Ok, after writing the first post, I went back to my NT and unchecked and re-checked the third party box. Then went to the Development area and unchecked the second USB debugging box and left the auto mount box unchecked.
I then went to the first USB debugging box and unchecked and re-checked the box. Then went back to DOS to load my last two apps and it worked!

Hm... I'm confused. What script, and where exactly are you getting the "Device not found" message from? On the Tablet? On the PC? What exactly are you doing that triggers the message? (i.e. "I click on the download status notification, and click the .apk that I downloaded and it pulls up a dialog that says, "OH NOES! I HATESES YOU! Device not found." ... text invented for humorous intent.)
nevermind, got it! i didn't have the right ADB drivers installed. i just followed this thread post:

and i got it working

Full details on the Nook Tablet in a few hours. I lost the "n" button after reverting to 1.4.0 via Adam's method, and need to retry the whole sequence again after going to a virgin B&N 1.4.0 state. If that works (ie, the "n" button works), I will publish details, but the above is correct.
EDIT #1: Here is the relevant info: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com...ith-full-root-and-Android-Market/td-p/1249365

[TBA] Root for XT1528

https://www.blackhat.com/us-15/briefings.html#ah-universal-android-rooting-is-back
Just two more weeks guys.
Man I hope so. I love this little cheap phone. I am limited by using Verizon for service but would like more than an unlocked bootloader for xposed, backup, and certain apps that require root. Sure I would love a unlocked bootloader for custom roms but root would be more than enough for a phone that I paid for in cash and use straight talk. Verizon is way to damn controlling.
This will be epic. Is someone actually doing this for our device?
Sent from my XT1528 using XDA Free mobile app
This is not device specific. It is a universal root method for Lollipop, including 64bit devices, which the xt1528 is, and (so far, AFAIK) were not able to be rooted on lollipop, unless they had already unlocked bootloader.
Has any work gone towards getting this phone rooted? I got it "rooted" with KingRoot but haven't been able to find a method to convert it to real (permanent) root since we can't remount /system as R/W. It also reverts when the system reboots. It sucks because I'd really love to unlock the full capabilities of this phone. My XT1528 and I are available to work with a dev to get this rooted.

Same boat as you. Achieved root with Kingroot, but I'm unable to mount /system rw.
However, mine has survived multiple reboots and Kingroot managed to permanently write its apk to /system, as well as its su binary to /system/xbin. In fact, I can't actually unroot or remove Kingroot for that very reason...
I'm stuck with "hobbled root". The good news is that nothing is broken, and everything is stable, with no glitches.
THIS is interesting. The PDF if publicly available via Google search.

I have the XT1528-Verizon version of this phone, running Android 5.1. The bootloader is locked down tight by the carrier, Verizon. Currently, there is no known way to unlock the bootloader on this variant of the Moto E, 2nd generation.
Because the bootloader is locked, it isn't possible to install a custom recovery, and without a custom recovery, it isn't possible to flash a custom ROM, which overwrites the stock system partition.
Furthermore, the locked bootloader prevents the /system partition from being mounted as read/write, so any changes to /system will revert back to stock upon rebooting the device, as it is mounted at boot as read only.
Somehow, during the rooting process, Kingroot was able to mount the /system partition as rw, and wrote its apk to /system, as well as its su binary to /system/xbin. These changes do not revert back upon reboot, so "root" is permanent, however, /system remains read only, so I am still unable to install a custom recovery, remove system apps, flash custom ROMs, or modify /system partition in any way. I'm quite sure it can be done, as kingroot was able to during the rooting process, but since it searches for and downloads whatever exploit it uses to root, the actual method is unknown.
Again, because I can't modify /system, I am unable to unroot because I can't remove the kingroot apk or binary from /system. This is why I call it permanently hobbled root.

The fasboot method worked, used it with:
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot oem unlock confirm
fastboot boot root-v2-z380c.img
Installed SuperSU, but no idea what it does.
Is it working now?
Root Basic Checker app says its not rooted?
---------- Post added at 01:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:32 PM ----------
NOTE: I've managed to root it using a mixture of https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65188654&postcount=45 and https://forum.xda-developers.com/an...d-10-z300c-t3214802/post65422483#post65422483 .
Solution: It was the SuperSU I had to open up first, running in the background, so it would ask for permission when Root Basic Checker checked it.
@snowseals: Your steps are allright. If you now run SuperSU app what is saying?
It now says it is rooted!
The solution is: the SuperSU I had to open up first, running in the background, so it would ask for permission when Root Basic Checker checked it.
Is it possible to use Xposed on this device to get rid off the ZenUI ?
Xposed - I don't know. Z380 own my kids.
It doesnt have to be Xposed, but atleast I want to make it run more smooth.
1) by removing bloatware (using root + uninstall master app)
2) by custom rom (i.e. Xposed or...) ?
3) any other recommendations? I see Greenify/Amplify being mentioned?
1) Titanium Backup or anything else.
2) Custom rom - unfulfilled wish yet
3) I prefer Naptime - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.franco.doze

Thanks! :good:
1) Titanium I've installed and going to make a backup for System and Apps.
I assume this backup is needed in case you remove something which causes the system to get unstable right?
But if it causes too much instability, like not starting up nomore, how can you run the backup afterwards?
2) I've searched alot, but it seems there is no Custom ROM for Z380C out-there yet.
the_mechanical tried but failed here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71498513&postcount=13
3) I tried Naptime, but it seems not compatible with Android 5.0.2. Greenify it is for me (since Amplify needs Xposed).
the_mechanical has some tips what to disable here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71671116&postcount=15
1) I know what I can uninstall. If will be any problem you can use Asus AFT flash tool with RAW image for rollback - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65929688&postcount=210.
2) Probably not
3) Yes you are right. Naptime is working only on 6.0+.
Thanks for your answers!
Meanwhile I've made a Bloatware list for Asus devices, check it out: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71693831&postcount=21

ADB Help please

I hope I'm posting this in the right place, I looked around a bit but I didn't get anything except more confused. So here's my issue, I'm a noob at all this rooting/programming business so before I messed with my nice phone I've been practicing on a LG L15G Sunrise TracFone running android 4.4.2. I gained root access with Kingroot, started to remove some bloatware that seemed safe to uninstall but I was wrong. Something I removed is now causing my settings app to crash. As soon as you try to open it, it just crashes. I don't have a recovery and can't find a rom anywhere for this particular phone. SO, since it's a $10 phone that I only use as a mp3 player anyway I'm not too concerned so I just want to fix it to see if I can and maybe learn something. I have an idea to restore the phone and my main question is can you request admin rights for an app on the phone if i hook it up to my PC with adb shell? If so what are the commands, or scripts, whatever you call it. And my second question is again about using adb console. I want to install an apk file onto the phone, but since my settings don't work, I can't get to the security tab to allow apps from unknown sources. Is there a way to turn this on with adb? Or somehow install the apk manually without permission.
Yeah you should be able to install a program and authorize root access, I don't know about kingroot I haven't heard great things but otherwise what's the point of root. Try installing flashfire and see if you have root access (careful with flashfire it's powerful).. If not I might recommend trying to replace kingroot with supersu like in the following post

Thank you all for your help. I did find the info on another thread and I now have unknown sources enabled. I was planning on replacing kingroot with supersu, there's plenty of tutorials on that floating around. Just wanted to regain access to my settings first before I made things worse. So now I have an idea, tell me if it's stupid. one of the apps i removed screwed the phone up, don't know which one, however, I was able to find apk files of the apps i uninstalled deep in the root browser. If I took these and reinstalled them back in their rightful spots as system apps would everything fall back into place like it never happened? Cuz that would be cool. I've never spent enough hours on this $10 phone I could have bought 10 of em by now if i was working lol. Just glad I was smart enough to take the time to learn this crap on a cheap phone instead of bricking my Moto X on the first go round. thanks for the help guys.

It should. As long as you have a copy of the app. I haven't been using the new root browser, but idk if it has a recycle bin.
