Android web browser windows & Smooth Rotate. - HTC EVO 3D

Don't know if this has been mentioned before...
But if you're like me, and hate that the standard browser only allows you to open a max of 4 windows / tabs... you can actually change it to 6.
It's not heaps more, but it's certainly better than 4...
I have tried it on the Desire S, and it doesn't work, but this works on the Evo 3D.
Steps;
- Open the browser
- In the web address field type about:debug
- Hit the menu button and then settings.
- Then scroll down to "Set max tab number" and change that to 6.
There is also an option called "Smooth Rotate", and when you enable that, and you switch from portrait to landscape view whilst browsing, the screen will roll around, rather than just changing...
It's hard to explain, so you're better of just seeing for yourself.
Cheers

cool thanks, but I couldnt find the set max tabs? is it under another category?

I use dolphin browser, it's fantastic

Does the phone have to be rooted for this to work? When I type that in on the stock browser, and hit enter, I get nothing. I'm on the Sprint version, not the GSM version.

thanks for sharing! I can't wait to try this out.
Yes version 11.1 has zero lag...using currently with thumb keyboard.
This browser works great! No lag at all, and the performance is great.
+1 . speedy typing with opera mobile and thumb keyboard
so, this confirms it's a software problem(no more blue-ish screen and lag in typing mode). Stock and dolphin browser better fix it soon too!

You may be able to extract the Gmail.apk from one of the system dump/ROMs located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1053 then just push it to your /system/app folder
Wow, this browser is blazing fast. Big thumbs up!
(Changed my user-agent to Firefox 5.0.1).
So uh... yes it's fast and smooth but is anyone else getting alot of freeze ups using it? I've had 3 in the last hour while using opera. Tablet will just straight up freeze and I gotta hold the power button to reset.
The one problem I have with this is that when one enters a term in the Google search window, it returns results from Google's mobile search engine, and I can't seem to find any way of fixing this. Really annoying, given that I'm quite sure no one wants the mobile version of anything on a tablet.
EDIT: forgot about this trick - to get around this all one has to do is:
1) go to the standard Google search page (www.google.com)
2) once loaded, long press on the search box on that page; a window will pop up to "add search".
3) just add the search and call it Google, then go to the search window in the browser and select the new Google search engine option you just created.
4) and boom, a nice desktop version of Google search!

Disabling Speed Dial!?!??
...but now my latest issue is trying to disable the stupid Speed Dial page seen at the start of opera. I just want to have a normal home page activated. I did go into about:config and found the default home page entry option, but even though I entered an address and it did save, the browser still goes to Speed Dial at start up. Grrrrr!!

FYI having the browser UA to desktop does not affect the search window. I did edit my post to include a tip on how to get around this though

1) typing is indeed much better. no more blue highlights in text boxes which seems to be the cause.
2) text selection is steadier.. the cursor seems to pick the right position more accurately and without the real annoying cursor jumping.
Dislikes
1) when typing this response.. the typing indicator started right in the middle of the reply text box with no way to put it at the top line.
2) font is smaller than stock browser and dolphin HD
3) scrolling is not as smooth as stock browser and dolphin hd
4) loading pages is slower than stock browser and dolphin hd
5) no full screen viewing
6) bookmarks are not as easy to access like dolphin HD
with all that said.. it is such a relief to be able to type without lag and to be able to set the cursor more accurately. I'll stick to opera for now until dolphin or stock gets rid of the lag. opera's small font is really annoying though. anyone have a fix?

Type opera:config in the address bar. There is a section for fonts, I haven't tried editing it though to change font size.

yea I've tried to up the min font size under user settings, but didn't make a difference. I've set the scale size higher which did increase the size, but cuts off parts of the page at the right hand side now. I'll keep testing different settings
increased the min font size to 13 which seems to help. tried 14, but it made sites look weird and buttons got cutoff. also, it doesn't seem to apply the new font size to everything. it changed xda, but did a Google search, and the results were still the smaller size.
also more dislikes:
1) tab button doesn't work! example - pressing tab to switch text boxes
2) sometimes texts just disappear since for some reason, it forgets to focus on the text box

[Q] GPU Accelerated browser possible with s-off???

Just wondering if it's possible to make the stock browser GPU accelerated now that we have s-off? I'm using Opera, which is generally pretty smooth, but not as smooth as what I've seen the SGSII do in browsing (which I know it's because they have the stock browser with GPU acceleration).
I'm going to try and start getting into development, and am actually gonna take some classes from a local college starting next week (C, C++ and Java). Has anyone ever thought about porting over the SGSII browser (I'm not sure how that would work with touchwiz and all)? Or is there a simple setting we could change in the HTC Browser (obviously it's not visible in the settings tab). I clearly don't know very much, but this is something I would love to work on if possible.
Try this and see if it helps at all.
Open up the stock browser and type
about:debug and then press the arrow key/enter key on your keyboard. Then press menu and select settings. Then scroll down and uncheck mobile view, then unceck location, then uncheck open pages in overview. Then scroll down to "set connection timeout" and raise to 20. Then scroll down and check quick rotate. Try that out and hopefully it helps a little.

UA settings

Just a little how-to change the user agent.
+ in the default browser type about:debug in to the adress bar. Press enter. Looks like nothing happens. Thats right!
+ now go to settings there should be a new option called debug.
+ under debug you will find the ua settings.
You can now choose for android, desktop, iphone or ipad
I made the change but not see any difference.
It works, but gets reverted back to android when you turn off the tablet.
I like Dolphin browser better.
It works. Thank you.

which user agent mode do you use?

Curious to see what the vote will be.
I keep my browser in desktop mode all the time. There are very few times I need to, or want to switch it to anything else.
Same here, desktop. When I got it I figured it would be like a phone and I would want the mobile but the large screen and speed at which web sites load has me leaving it on the desktop setting (set to show pages in overview).

I mainly use desktop, but many sites that used to be fine in desktop mode on Android browser are losing some of their functionality. This is the reason I rarely use rootzwiki anymore, I'm constantly having to switch user agents.
I prefer desktop. How are you guys getting it to stay in desktop mode 24/7? I have to always hit the menu button and change it everytime I use the browser!
i use dolphinhd - so i do have the desk/android switcher loaded - so i sometimes flick between for the best experience

On Dolphin HD and ICS+ you can set it and it will stay, Dolphin even has an add on that will allow for easy toggling between desktop and Android.
There is a way in stock too by typing something in the address bar to bring up developer option. about:config or something like that. Someone posted it around here somewhere.

Only annoying annoying part about doing it this way is that you have to set it every browser session (at least that's how it used to be).
Desktop.
Boat Browser (my preference) has configurable user agents.

Found something cool about our Ruby

Go to a long page in browser, go to scroll down but then go onto where the soft buttons are and move your finger left and right, didn't know that we could do that.
Phreaks play on the Fone, and the HTC Amaze 4G, - XML
Umm..whats it supposed to do. It's not working for me on Energy Rom.
Like zoom in then try to scroll left and right at the soft keys and it still works.

Glad to see I'm not the only one this happens to. I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove "Tue" from my dictionary. That is so annoying, it almost always happens when try to type "the".
Lol...same here. It's kinda annoying. Even in landscape it does it.
Settings > language and keyboard > touch input (press the little equalizer icon) > edit personal dictionary > hit menu then delete and get rid of whatever words you no longer want.
Cleared mine out the other day and typing is so much more smoother, but still a little quirky.
