[Q] Why is my keyboard inserting random smiley faces?? - Motorola Droid X2

I am getting very frustrated with my phone. When I am texting my keyboard randomly inserts smiley faces. I have narrowed it down to when I press the Q on the keyboard. However it happens all the time and is really annoying. Anyone got any advice how I can fix this.

Are you able to switch to different keyboards and experience the same problem?

It only happens on the keyboard that comes on eclipse. The other one I try.. swype doesn't do it but I don't like the swype keyboard. Guess im gonna have to find another keyboard.

Well I just installed ics keyboard and it still happens this is annoying as hell.

Was the keyboard working successfully at one point and then all the sudden, stopped working as expected?
Before you go installing other apps, etc I'd suggest making a nandroid backup. That way if you do quite a bit to the phone before finding how to fix it, you can restore the phone to your current state and then apply the fix.
Once you make a backup, I'd suggest wiping the cache to see if something got stuck. It might not fix the issue at all but if it doesn't, you can restore from the backup anyway.
Also, is your sig correct, you're running Eclipse 1.2?

Well its been happening for a while now don't remember what caused it. I'm actually running 1.3 right now need to change that.
Actually I'm running ics keyboard and its not happening anymore. So hopefully it doesn't happen anymore.

Same here man... It is happening a lot less since I upgraded to the ICS keyboard. Might want to try that. However it still happens like once or twice a day. Better than 100.

I've had similar issues, but seemed to only occur when using a new input method or on reboot. I use swype and once I switched to the Evo swype apk, the problem stopped. Probably doesn't help your case, but I know you're not alone.
I know this may not really fix your problem but really just provide an alternative solution, you could use Swype. Swype is much faster (in my opinion), and you still have the option to type normally with it. You would have to download the beta from Swype's Website, it doesn't take too long to register for the beta.
I have had this problem too in the past. I'm just curious, do you use handcent? The only time I've really seen this happen for me is in handcent's popup windows, but I have no idea why it happens, and honestly, it doesn't happen often enough for me to want to try to figure it out. But I feel your pain, when it does happen, it's quite annoying :/
Happens to me all the time... I use Smart Keyboard Pro.
See my thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132927
Wish I could figure this out. I type super fast and it's starting to get veryyy annoying.
Wow so does mine LOL I thought. I was crazy.

Ya i had major problems with this on the stock keyboard. I also had just general problems with lag sometimes in the stock messenger app, as well as receiving duplicates of text messages. I formatted the cache partition in cwr and used the gingerbread keyboard in the market and have since have had zero problems (so far lol).
Same Here!
I'm having similar issues. When I "wake" my TB up and try to go in to type a text message, email or any other thing that uses the keyboard, the keyboard shows up and allows me to type, but nothing shows up on the screen.
I've tried using the GB keyboard from the Market (which I REALLY like), but no matter what I try, I seem to have a problem. I thought it might be WidgetLocker interacting badly, but uninstalling that doesn't work. I thought it might be because I was using Go SMS Pro, but uninstalling that didn't work either. I went back to using the stock keyboard (which I really DON'T like), but to no avail. The only thing that DOES seem to work is to reboot the phone.
This is getting a little ridiculous! I don't want to have to reboot this phone every time the keyboard decides it doesn't want to work! Anyone have any advice?
Just FYI, I'm not rooted. I haven't gotten that far yet. The only thing I've done that isn't stock is to run Go Launcher as opposed to Sense. And this issue was happening when I was running Sense as well.

[Q] Atrix 4G 2.3.4 Keyboard randomly stops working

Since updating to Gingerbread I've been randomly having to restart my phone because it will stop taking input from the keyboard. You'll see words suggested to auto-correct but nothing will actually type in the box. As soon as I reboot this is resolved, but it occurs 3 - 5 times a day.
Ideas?

I too have the same issue with the OTA. Tried these steps to no avail...
1. Reflashed Stock 2.3.4
2. Flashed Pudding and Unlocked.
3. Flashed a new ROM Alien
4. Installed SwiftKey (Keyboard) too
None of these have worked. I actually ran clean with NO APPS for 24 hours and gave up email and only used the stock text app and had the same thing happen. So I am stumped.
But the plus in all this I ended up running the Alien ROM and its blazing compared to the stock. But I typically have to pull the battery daily for the dang keyboard.
It really is weird how the prediction works so I can type a whole sentence but its not visable.
I hope you can get a suggestion.
It appears to be an issue with the process itself android.com.multitouchkeyboard. If I could find a way to just restart that process I think I can at least mitigate the problem enough to not require a restart every time.

So are you saying the problem would go away using another Keyboard say SWYPE and possibly freezing the multitouchkeyboard process?
We're not alone
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/gingerbread-development-hacking/24275-installed-gingerbread-now-keyboard-randomly-stops-working-device-lags.html
So it appears to be an issue with Gingerbread build? That's great news
I hated the stock keyboard from the very first moment I got the Atrix. Shopped around for quite awhile before finding the ideal keyboard replacement, which for me was Smart Keyboard. I set it to the HTC skin, and it's the best keyboard I've ever worked with on a touchscreen.
No problems at all like what's been described here.
I'll give that a try. For me it doesn't matter which keyboard I've selected I still seem to get this issue. Currently using perfect keyboard free and it occurs on this as well.

If that's true, I would recommend a factory reset. I know, it sucks, but when you get an odd system based glitch like this (and it's a software issue) usually a factory reset fixes it. If that doesn't do it, something in the O/S may be corrupted, and installing a fruitcake build might help.
Earthdog, do you happen to have an SD card installed on your Atrix? I some how was able to recover the keyboard on mine without restarting by clearing the cache on the keyboard process.

eosophobia: I do have an SD Card installed. I will try clearing the cache next time and see if that helps.
edit: I just tried and no go still have to reboot. I have the behavior on the following keyboards: Swift VIP, (stock) Multi Touch, Gingerbread Keyboard (from Market) and Swype...
I'm having this issue as well, but I'm not on gingerbread yet. I'm rooted with gladiatrix and vivid lime installed, version 2.2.2 android. Weird thing is it started when the gingerbread ota came out. Any ideas?

I still have no idea. Some days I have a reboot once and other it happens 5 or 6 times. What Keyboard are you using?
I did discover a new mystery to the issue. If you type something in an app when the keyboard does not seem to work and lock the phone and unlock it the text is then visible.
Odd
um , im pretty sure you could just def get a another keyboard like better keyboard or swift or ect . you can download those in the app market and change the input on them . If that doesn't work then you could use a fruit cake to go back to stock . hope that works

Glad I found this thread. This has occurred on two phones now (atrix)
Also the clock in notifications freezes and CPU maxes the frequency. It gets really hot until it reboots itself or I reboot. I have been trying to fix this bug for a couple months now. Had anyone reported it?
It may have gotten this nailed down.
If you are having this issue do you have a SD Card installed? If so what brand and size.
After removing the SD Card and powering on does the issue go away?

Issues with notification sounds going mute...

So I have a Droid X2, now un-rooted and back on stock 2.3.4 and this is an issue I have had since I had the phone and have never found a fix. I have asked this multiple times on the Verizon forum for the DX and never get an answer...
SO every day I seem to have issues with my notifications going mute, sometimes, but not always, my ringer even goes mute. Usually once a day I have to reboot my phone because it is the only way I can fix it. I thought at first it had to do with my blutooth, but since SBFing and going back to stock I have not re-added my blutooth and it still happens. I took it into the store and he suggested that it is an app causing a conflict and I should uninstall 10 or so apps at a time to try and narrow it down... but I just went ahead and did a factory restore to see if it would help... but it happened again today...
Now, the notifications I use are ones I put on the phone. I have tried putting them on the SD and the internal and it seems to happen with both. I have also put them directly on and also tried ringdroid but it still does the same thing. The sound and notification levels will be all the way up, and when you go into the settings and try to pick a notification sound or ringtone, even the stock ones, you wont hear anything (and you would usually hear a preview of the sound)... The only way I can get the sounds to work is to reboot the phone and when it comes back, it will be fine... for a while. Sometimes have to reboot multiple times a day, but almost always at least once a day to get them back up...
Since you all seem smarter than the Verizon folks and have been a huge help to me thus far, I thought I would ask here and see if anyone else has ran into this and has a fix or if there are any known apps that would cause this. I have done searches but found nothing...

Awesome... thank you!
I've had a similar issue but not exactly the same. I normally keep my phone on silent mode but sometimes during the day it will automatically go off silent mode. Seems to happen most often when the battery level is below half. I just learned to live with it. My alarm would deactivate by itself in Froyo, so at least this isn't going to cause me to be late for work like that.
Problem is solved here after last week's upgrade. I'd suggest flashing a new build if possible. I guess for some unknow reason, parts of the OS gets corrupted or maybe its a bug in device drivers for our android phones thats been addressed in later builds.

I'm certainly no dev, just an avid user who likes learning and tweaking to get the most from his phone. I recall having similar problems with FROYO stock or rooted which as I remember went away when GINGERBREAD came out. I've been running DZK's CM7 beta as my daily driver since it was released with virtually no problems and unlike most other ROM's does not need multiple tweaks and scripts to scream with the exception of a wifi and/or dialer glitch that looks like Moonshadow has recently fixed. Sooooo unless HDMI is a deal breaker I'd suggest you flash CM7 and see if that takes care of your problems just remember to abide by the cautions regarding use of TBU to restore apps. And lastly as a rule of thumb I reboot my phone every morning once I get to 100% charge...force of habit I guess.
Good luck

Thanks everyone... I havent been on because it strangely hasn't been happening. Not sure what changed. Did not uninstall any apps, and have not had any updates (as far as I know... well besides app updates) and for some reason it hasnt been happening lately. Again, no idea what changed. Still unrooted on stock 2.3.4 gingerbread and phone seems fine now. Been happening for months and when I finally come here to get help, the problem seemed to have went away. I will keep you all updated if this changes. Hopefully if it is happening to anyone else, it has also been fixed... Thanks again for all your help. Really appreciate you guys helping out this noob
what i did
i have an mb870 too with no service running google voice and groove ip . my issue with notifications
was with my kids hitting all the button selections she could. in the process my message notifications
got defaulted to the wrong messaging app. i was still getting messages but no tones or vibrations.
so i just went to all the messaging apps i have and made sure to select the right one for the default
hope this helps

[Q] Keyboard freezing up in some apps

New to this forum and seeking some help(obviously)
Had this phone for about 3 weeks now and I love it. I just have one problem with it.
In the stock messaging app, Kik, and a couple of other apps, my keyboard will occasionally freeze. Android keyboard, LG keyboard, Swype... They all do it.
But I can still type on it, it just won't show me a "live-shot" of what I'm typing. When I press the back button(hides keyboard), all the text that I typed would show up. For example, if I type/swype "I like cake", it won't show anything in the text field until I hide/exit out of the keyboard. Then it all the text shows up at once.
I've tried everything I know of. I've done a factory reset on the phone, I've disabled keyboards, I've uninstalled apps. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! This isn't a huge pain because a restart temporarily fixes it, and this phone only takes like 45 seconds to reboot. It's just annoying since it happens several times a day.

this is strange I have had no issues regarding this whether I was stock or otherwise. If you got it from best buy take it back and get another, I have gone through 3 LGOG until I found one that didnt have strange issues. But I also got mine early. Maybe some of the senior members have had this issue. Good Luck
Thanks for the replies. I'm not rooted and I've installed all the updates they've sent out so far. I've looked online and I haven't been able to find anyone else with this problem...
I got it from AT&T(They matched Best Buy's price for me!) and I have to go there in about a week to get a credit on my bill, so I'll just ask them to try to figure out what's going on.

I fixed it. Apparently one of the few apps that I did not uninstall was causing the problem. Tesla LED(Flashlight app) was causing the keyboard to freeze. I have no idea why... That app has nothing to do with the keyboard. But I uninstalled it, installed another flashlight app and haven't had a problem since Tuesday night.

Hahaha, no problem, man! I installed Tiny Flashlight + LED and added the widget to my home screen. So now all I need to do is tap the widget and the flashlight turns on.
Ya, so I havent downloaded any flashlight app, yet fairly frequently, in messaging, web browsing, and the like, my keyboard stops displaying input (sometimes even gestures in web browsing, such as swiping to move around the screen freeze too). The words and other things i change, such as where in a web page it is focused does take effect after hitting the menu key on the phone. Typing also seems to work regularly in landscape, but im not used to turning it every time i type and id rather not get used to it. It happens with the Android keyboard as well as the LG one, and might be related to the similiar freezing the google voice and swype brought, but im fairly positive i completely uninstalled those, so idk...

Hey guys I just notice this as well fresh from the att store, although I've only seen it only once. So I'm 100% sure it's not due to rooting/bootloader unlocked. My suspicion is some sort of memory leak in the LG keyboard service (it's loaded as well even though you're using android OS). I clear both keyboard data and reboot, never happened anymore since then.

[Q] Message Editing Driving Me Insane!

Ok so I'm having this problem no matter what keyboard I use that whenever I edit a word in a message or note, etc, Android duplicate the word every time I hit the spacebar and it's driving me insane because it ruins my message and I can't stop it. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm using google keyboard at the moment but have the same issues on the stock keyboard, as well as swiftkey, which means its the OS. I'm rooted on Venom ROM, but had the same issues before I rooted. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Anyone?

I had the same issue using Perfect Keyboard from the Play Store, both on Stock Rom and on Viper Rom. Uninstalling and reinstalling didn't work, wipe data didn't work, even showed the issue right after a clean install (full wipe). Don't know the cause but I begrudgingly switched back to using HTC stock keyboard and no problems for over a month. I miss using the volume keys for moving the cursor, but I hated this issue even more...
Perhaps let the dev know and see if they can isolate the issue, otherwise use a different keyboard? Sorry can't help, but you're not the only one that's see the issue!
Good luck!

I had the issue even on the stock rom before root IIRC. I use google keyboard, but believe the issue was the same even using swiftkey. There has to be some bug in the OS that is causing this, but I've literally tried everything to no avail.
