Galaxy Tab 10.1 Rogers/Bell version - I can use it just for the WIFI right? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering, if I buy a Rogers branded galaxy tab 10.1 from someone (it's cheaper since a lot of people got free tablets as part of a promotion), there isn't a requirement to pop in a SIM or anything right? I'm neither a Rogers customer nor do I plan on using 3G. I only want to use WIFI to connect to the internet.
That should be doable right? I plan on rooting and flashing a custom ROM after to get rid of all the Rogers branded crap. I would get the WIFI model but that's a lot more expensive than the Rogers ones I see on craigslist.
Thanks!

shouldn't be any problem you are only using the sim to access 3G/4G anyways
there is an unlock tool posted, so you can unlock the Tab and insert any sim of your choice

Where can I find the unlock tool so that I can unlock it and send it to US (as gift) for use with US providers?
Thanks!

[Q] Can ANY Vibrant be Unlocked?

im planning to buy a Samsung Vibrant to use it with another carrier, my only doubt is if ANY Vibrant CAN be UNlocked?
Thanks in Advance.
Yes all vibrant should be able to be unlocked, just make sure that you have a sim card that is not t-mobile

Thanks.
One more thing. What is "hardware locked"? i've seen it in other posts but i don't know what it means.

unable to get into recovery or download mode using the physical keys.
Why you want to unlock a Vibrant to use on another carrier? All of the 4 major carriers in the USA has a Galaxy S model. Use the one that your carrier has.
By the way, if you unlock the Vibrant it will only work on GSM networks (AT&T and TMO)

I want the Vibrant because it definitely has more dev-support. Also I like it more i9000-ish.

Telcel uses the same 3G bands as AT&T (850Mhz/1900Mhz); T-Mobile on the other hand uses 1700/2100 MHz. When it comes to 2G, both T-Mobile and AT&T use the same frequencies.
So basically, there's nothing to fix. If you wanted to use Telcel's 3G network you should have gotten a Samsung Captivate and not a Vibrant. The phone will work, but you will be limited to 2G speeds.
You said it works with Movistar though, so perhaps your best bet would be switching carriers? Still, it's a really sweet phone even if you can't use Telcel's 3G network.
Suggestion
Actually, I think you should be after the Bell Vibrant instead of the T-Mobile's Vibrant. Either that or the Captivate.
Both the Bell (Canada) Vibrant and AT&T's Captivate have the same 3g bands as Telcel and Movistar (850/1900 3g). I would go with either of those for full 3g coverage just in case the 3g down there is as weird as AT&T's (From what I've read AT&T is kinda transitioning it's 3g from the 1900 band and pushing it more onto 850). Besides, not too many places support T-Mobile's Vibrant 3g band (AWS).
Can non-activated Vibrant be unlocked?
I've read related threads but haven't found an answer that really helps me. I'm buying a new Vibrant from someone tomorrow that hasn't been activated yet. As soon as I get it I'm planning on unlocking it to work on AT&T. Will I be able to unlock the Vibrant if it hasn't been activated on T-Mobile yet? Thanks for your help.

Yes you can, the first thing I did after finishing with the unboxing of my Vibrant was unlock the phone and instert my At&t sim card... no need at all to first activate with TMO

Awesome! Thanks a lot. Did you use the Samsung Galaxy S Unlock Tool to unlock yours?
If telcel uses the same bands as at&t then you should have 3g try seeing which band your phone has checked to on. 850 is disabled by default if you go to one of Eugene's froyo builds thread there you will see how to enable the band to have 3g on your phone for that specific carrier which is most likely the 850 band.
Try that if it doesn't work sorry I tried to help. I hope it works for you though enjoy your vibrant.

Did you have to root your Vibrant before you could unlock it? I tried to run the unlock tool but it said no codes could be found. I had read that some of the newer Vibrants were firmware locked so you have to root before you can unlock. This one is brand new so I'm guessing I need to root it first. Any thoughts?
Maybe, idk. I've had my vibrant since it came out and its been rooted so I can't help you there. Why don't you just root?

Modem Unlock VS IMEI Unlock

I am going to get the note but when i research on unlocking it i found the modem t unlock that makes it works with tmobile hspa+, but when i go on craigslist to to buy it they sell the note with "imei" unlock....whats the difference?...
IMEI Unlock = SIM/Network Unlock
If your phone is AT&T Network locked, you can use your phone with only AT&T sim cards.
So If phone is Network Unlocked, you can use it with any sim card.
Modem unlock will make your phone able to connect T-Mobile's Mobile Network (it unlocks the frequencies that hardware supports but not software)

There is no better or worse - if you want to use AT&T and have an AT&T SIM, then you don't need either.
If you want to use T-Mobile then you need to IMEI unlock the device so it accepts a T-Mobile SIM, then you need to install the T-Mobile Modem if you want speeds beyond 2G EDGE.
TL;DR: IMEI Unlock lets you use a non AT&T SIM in the device, Modem "Unlock" lets you use T-Mobile's 3G frequencies along with that T-Mobile SIM.
Can anyone point me to a good write up on how to install the Tmobile modem?
I am rooted and IMEI unlocked. Sorry just new to this stuff.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
all i had to do (after root and unlock) was flash the "Blaze 4G modem" through Clockwork mod, from AllGamer's thread. that opened up the AWS frequencies.
EDIT: found it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547114
so basically you need both unlocks to use it on t-mobile....imei to use t-mobie sim card and modem unlock to use 3g/4g speeds on t-mobile network....and i heard u still get a weak signal .....dont know if affects your experience as in dropped calls and slow data ect ect...but um @ schuflea http://rootgalaxynote.com it will tell you how to install anything on your galaxy note...good luck ..
if any one is still thinking about getting a gnote.....you should wait...its officially coming out for t-mobile....well thats wuts going around the net....theres even pictures of it with t-mobile branding.....you should wait like a month...its 4/28/12 wait till 5/28/12 lol....see wut happens....

T865 on T-Mobile

I was wondering if anybody is using the international T865 on T-Mobile, and if so, how is the LTE signal? I know this model doesn't have all of the T-Mobile LTE bands, but I believe it has a couple of the important ones? I ran an international Tab S2 on T-Mobile, and it worked pretty much just fine in Los Angeles. I was kind of curious how this might work now, if the network has changed since then or whatnot, and then how the merger with Sprint might affect it in the near future. Any info is appreciated!

Yeah I don't think that works. Have you tried putting a smartphone sim in your T-Mobile S6? I'm sure the system will recognize it as a tablet and not a phone. That's why I want to order an 865 international model. But then again I guess I might look into how much it costs just to add some tablet data to my plan.

I have a smartphone sim (no difference than an normal sim) and get mobile data which allows me to use the phone when WiFi is not available (I don't want to use my phone as a hotspot). The T-Mobile LTE tablet cannot make phone calls or text but can use the text and call on other devices option on Samsung phones which allows you to use the Tablet using your phone number.
On other samsung devices the US models use the Snapdragon chip while the international model uses the exynos chip which can easily unlock the bootloader and root the phone or tablet. I understand that the S6 LTE tablet is using only the Snapdragon chip worldwide so rooting may be much more difficult. However the international version should have the OEM unlock available so the bootloader can be unlocked. Normally I only get the international versions and root, but if is getting more difficult each year to root the Samsung devices. I bought a used S6 LTE and am happy with my tablet.

So you have a smartphone sim in your T-Mobile Tab S6 LTE, and can get unlimited data? Is it a T-Mobile SIM or another carrier? I tried that some years ago with a different tablet and it didn't work because the system recognized it as a tablet and not a smartphone. That would be cool if it works though, I don't care that much about calling and texting, but unlimited data would be cool.
I like the international models too because they can be used like huge phones lol, but they don't have all of the T-Mobile LTE bands, but I think they have enough that it works okay.

512mb version S7+ for AT&T

Anyone know what the deal is? I just started looking at these. I’m an AT&T user. It looks like ATT only has 128mb versions .... is this true? Can I get an “unlocked” 512mb S7+ device that I can use on ATT?
Let me ask another way .... have any of you that have cellular (not WiFi ) devices been able to use another carrier ? Are they locked to a particular carrier??

I haven't been able to find an unlocked US version, and my T-Mobile version is locked. I bought it directly from Samsung, though, so I should be able to request an unlock code from T-Mobile.
