[Q] Root SII without USB access - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
My Samsung Galaxy SII cannot be accessed via its USB slot. I am able to recharge the phone over USB but that is all. Basically it got wet (very wet) and after much salvaging I managed to get USB recharging functionality back but lost USB data access.
My question. Is there anyway that I can root my phone without using USB.
Details:
Android version: 2.3.3
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKE2
Baseband version: I9100XXKDJ
I have tried using Gingerbreak (which I got onto the phone via AirDroid) but this isnt working for me.
I cannot use Odin or ADB because of my USB problem.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Many thanks!
John

Use wireless adb to install the zergrush root
or I saw something on the front page of xda about a mobile odin version that you could use right on the phone
edit I just actually read more on the movile odin and you need a CWM5 kernel so you will have to use the wireless adb for zergrush first then dd a rooted kernel in place manually then you will have CWM installed fine.

Many many many thanks!!
I have re-read the wireless ADB description. When I first looked at this I thought that I first needed to be root to install it! But now I see that that is not the case.
So with wireless ADB I should be able to manually root my phone.
Brilliant. Thanks!
John

Currently there is no way you could achieve root without having a working USB port.

If you use the EverRoot option (Market/Pro version only), Mobile ODIN will root the firmware while you flash it.
Yes i am misreading above as to will root and or will root on the fly >>as it roots an unrooted phone .

I have downloaded mobile Odin Pro and tried running it.
"Mobile ODIN - Error
SuperUser access is needed, but could not be acquired.
Are you rooted and did you give permission?"
To which I can only press OK.
So I dont have access to "EverRoot".
It was worth a shot though! And I will be using it at some point once I gain root....
Cheers
John

Have you tried the Zergrush root method via wireless adb yet?
Note it will only give root without any custom kernel or recovery. But you can then use adb again to dd the cf-root kernel into place manually and after a reboot recovery will be installed and available.

I have installed adbWireless and am reading up on zergrush and cf-root kernel at the moment. Havent got wifi access here so will need to wait until later to try this out.
Looking for the exact dd command at the moment.

The command should be
dd if=/sdcard/zImage of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5
Just place the uncompressed zImage file in the base of the sdcard

Forgot to mention just in case that before that you have to do a "su" and authorize it on the phone screen to have permission to do that command.

[Q] S2 Root

I have just used S2 Root, I pressed the "Root Device" Button

What should I do? It is stuck like that for about half an hour already...
It says that it is already rooted
But it is not...
I used Odin to put an insecure kernel
and once i try to use S2 Root I have this error.
I try to use Titanium Backup for example and it says I dont have root permissions.
Hmmm.. Did you had the phone on? I mean, like not in download mode. Just turn on like normal?
step 1. Go to a proper root guide
step 2. flash cf kernel
step 3. profit?

The insecure cf-root kernel already rooted the device, no need to use s2 root or anything else.

Yes, I had the phone turned on
And even if I don't use S2 Root It says I don't have root privileges in Titanium Backup
Do you have an app called "superuser"? If not you have to download it from Market and download Busybox from Market too.
Hope it works.

[Q] does SuperOneClick work? AT&T SGSII

has anyone confirmed that SuperOneClick works for AT&T's Galaxy S II?
It does work. During step 6 the app will hang, unplug your phone from the USB > Turn USB debugging off, then on again > plug it back in--it should now complete the root process. Keep in mind you must have CWM installed first.
yeah man works like a charm, I was kinda afraid it would be hard but the one how-to makes it real straight forward

On its own - no. All of the classic SOC holes were plugged in Gingerbread because malware was using them too.
SOC can still root a device that has an insecure kernel, such as codeworkx's CWM kernel. So you have to flash the kernel then root. (The idea is that insecure kernels have root for ADB but not for applications - so SOC uses this fact to push su and Superuser.apk to the correct locations via ADB.)
Another option is to flash a pre-rooted /system package - right now my unbrick package in dev section includes a rooted /system - flash it and you've got root, no SOC needed.

Root Guide to Samsung galaxy trend plus GT-7580

I have an Samsung galaxy trend plus GT-7580, Europian version. (sorry my english) and I want it to be rooted. Is there any guide to how to root this phone?
I have an GT-7580 galaxy trend plus, european too.
I confirm root with Kingo root: easy, functional and secure!
Search kingo root, download the windows program, active the "USB Debugging" on the developpers mode (activate this menu in Setting -> More -> About Device -> 5 or 6 clicks at BUILD NUMBER), install and run the program with the phone connected....et voilà!

But wasn't that program banned from xda, because it install some nasty malware?
I used VRoot to root mine. Found out about it randomly (someone said they managed to root a phone with it) and, luckily, it was compatible with the S7580 as well.
I'm waiting for some custom roms now.

I used the vroot. It seem legit. And I strip off alot of bloatware. plus I removed the vroot own su with the normal su.
Same here. I'm not sure how much of the rumors were true (about vRoot being malware and all that), but it helped me a bunch when there were no other alternatives. The support for S7580 is very limited at the moment and it was difficult to find even a way to root it.
All in all, I'm happy with it. Same as you HenryStar, I removed a bunch of stock crap I wasn't using and replaced the chinese SU app with SuperSU. So far so good; can't wait for people to start taking an interest in this phone so we can have some alternatives to the stock rom.
By the way, did you manage to install any recovery on it?
i have that phone to...lets hope that they will make a treath for trend plus..lets see...so we rooted the phone..wath did u make overclock?? or something to him?
I don't usually overclock my phones. Besides, the S7580 is rather snappy and I'm not sure the minimal improvement is worth the extra stress on the CPU.
Still waiting and hoping for a separate section for it.
Sorry if I was late with my answer and no, I tried to install custom recovery. I gonna test this so I can get an custom recovery on this phone in the futher.

Extract recovery img:
For ADB:
connect phone via usb(make sure usb debugging is connected).
Start ADB
from windows:
Click Start
Run -> Cmd.exe
type "adb shell"(without quotations)
from ubuntu:
Press Ctrl+alt+t(or open the terminal)
type "./adb shell"(without quotations)
when in the shell type "su"(without quotations)
On your phone a dialogue window will appear asking for permission to grant superuser. Click yes!!
now type "cat /proc/mtd"(without quotations)
A list of partitions(or w/e they are) should appear, you're looking for the one called "recovery". Mine is labeled mt8, I assume this is the same for you, but I could be wrong. For your phone's sake let's just make sure we're certain!!!
now in the shell type:
dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd8 of=/sdcard/recovery.img
your recovery.img should now be on the root of your sdcard

[Q] Install a custom recovery without PC and root

Hello everyone,
I tryed multiple time to flash my phone (original ROM) with Odin and other software. Every time the connection cannot be established. I have tried with different computers and different cables, including the original one. I came to the conclusion that Micro USB connector in my phone is broken. I can still recharge but data transfer is not possible.
I have an SD card where i can put a ROM in order to update my phone. But if i'm correct that isn't possible if I don't have ClockworkMod Recovery.
So finaly my question: Is it possible to root install a custom recovery without a cable and without root?
So in oder words: If it's not rooted and i have the Stocked recovery I can't do anything without the usb connector.

I would like both. But at this moment I have no USB connector (broken). So I have some kind of a boostrap issue.
Without root no flashing from device
Without custom recovery no root and no other rom.
You need to look for a custom recovery that can be flashed using the update.zip facility in stock. I'm not aware of one but happy searching.

Then you have to flash a "CF-root.tar" file with odin. Then your stock kernel will be rooted, su will be installed and also a custom recovery.
In most cases it will be CWM..... ..... Happy Flashing

But there could or is the possibility to root phones with an "odin root apk" .But i think one should not do it in this way
cause you could break your device....The download mode with an odin program and an USB connection to your phone
