I'm having very poor battery life compared to my samung galaxy tab 10.1 and my motorola xoom
Im getting about 5 to 6 hours of screen on time. Most of the time I browse the web and play some gamesWith the galaxy tab 10.1 I used to get around 10 hours abd wih the xoom about 9.
Is just me or are you having te same problem?
I also can't see the battery usage stats.

For battery drain, are you in balanced power mode? The display would be the next thing I would check. Make sure your do not have the brightness up too high or that new IPS+ brightness feature turned up for outdoor viewing.

even with low brightness, having it in Normal mode drains the fastest. normal mode is when Prime is running at Max power. combine that with web surfing slot and that's the cause. web surfing puts a strain on battery as its constant using more n more ram n rendering pages, etc.. even so it seems you should be getting better battery life even with that configuration. do you have alot of Widgets set up to update very frequently? do u have your email set up to update frequently? do u have something else rubbing in the background that you're not aware of? all of those things will cause battery to drain faster.
if you want the best battery life and power use balanced mode instead. even in balanced mode, its far more powerful than the galaxy tab or xoom you mentioned. make sure to check for those other things mentioned also. you should get better battery life than that though even in normal mode. you could also decrease the display timeout.
since the normal battery usage setting that shows apps battery usage is bugged in HC in prime, go to the market place. download a free app called Android Assistant. its 18 tools in one. on there it has an app battery usage sections and you can check there to see what's been draining battery the most aside from display. .

plus technically its still too early for battery to be fully broken in and calibrated yet. it has to go through several full charge and discharge cycles before it gets to optimal battery performance.
I'm at around a day on normal with auto brightness. Use it mostly to browse the web and xda. Play a few games as well.
Yeah battery isnt as good as everyone makes it out to be. Since i got it on dec 23rd I have had to charge it up every night.
In the morning its at 100% (10am) then I take it with me to work, usally dont even have time to use it but sometimes i do. On a day that I dont end up using it at work at all, by the time I get home its at 93% (decent for being idle 10 hours, my hp touchpad is around 95% after my 10 hour work day and ipad 2 sits at 99-98%). then i start actually using the device, 10pm - 2am and im down to 50%. This is with very light use, checking email and usally watching a movie on the sdcard. By the time i goto bed its about 20% (3am).
So overall the battery is "OK". Gets about or close to what other tablets are getting in terms of battery life. My ipad 2 gets about 10 hours no matter what i do (gaming, browsing, videos). Asus Prime gets about 7-8 light use (email, sdcard movies, sd music) and about 6 hours heavy use (gaming and browsing).
Settings on my PRIME:
Balanced mode
10% brightness
super IPS + off
GPS off, Bluetooth off.

Well that's over 12 hours which is what the specs list the battery life at without the dock

So then i guess every tablet can run for 12 hours or more in that case...
The prime is advertised as having 12 hours battery life when your using the device, not in idle... you are obviously trolling anyone that has something bad to say about the prime, Its shameful.
This is with heavy to light use. Wifi it always on. Screen set to auto. On normal mode. I have only charged it when the battery dies completely and don't unplug it until it is at 100% for awhile. There was 1 or 2 times where I charged before it died completely.

In all honesty, considering how much the device lags at times according to reports, I can't imagine running it in any other mode than Normal. I'd understand if the other modes would be lag-free for light activities like browsing, but they are not. At the moment, Normal is the 'best you get' in a bad situation.

Umm, I don't know if your aware... but any tablet can do that if its just idle all day like that...
I always drain my tablets once or twice a week till they shutoff and charge them up to 100% and unplug (if you leave them charging over night or drain them to 0% every night it will degrade).

this is funny as I run mines in balanced mode most of the time. its always lag free. what reports of lag you speak of? lol even when I put it in battery savings mode its smooth as hell. these so called reports along with others really have people who don't even own device misinformed. most so called reports here on general show device moves fast n smoothly. there has only been 1 video of so called lag in browser and that was trivial. as people thought video didn't really represent what was going on. other than that, there has been no proof of so called lag. especially coming from major reviews before release and after. I've basically used my tab nonstop and have a whole lot of stuff installed on mines with Widgets and live wallpapers and no lag at all what so ever. it'll be different of proof was out there bit there isn't. as far as memory goes funny how some new tabs announced with 2gb of RAM and now suddenly 1gb is not enough or its a little..lol. of course o would rather wish this had 2gb ram tl start off with but it doesn't. from what I can tell it doesn't hamper performance at all and seems to be enough.
ill just end this here. I could go on n on debunking these so called reports but not worth the time. it'll be different if it was a valid argument like GPS. which we know isn't working properly. as far as wifi, lag n everything else goes, its all trivial at best. as my device performs perfectly aside from GPS, which I've never fully tested yet. I'm a good candidate for using the tablet more than most considering use it for work also. so I'm day in and day out on this tablet. even developers who have posted reviews of prime are more than satisfied with performance. tell them the so called reports n see what they tell you in return..lmao

Not if you are formatting battery for first few times - it is said to do like this in manual.
Ive heard of people going 32 hours with the dock, so you must be really whipping those 4 cores.

Do not believe this. It depends on how the person count it. I count ONLY the time of "Screen on". Some people makes Prime to sleep for 10 hours + work of 4 hours and they say their primes work for 14 hours
So after using the tablet if in options (battery monitor app) I see 6 hours of display on and I have 3% to go then I can tell my Prime works 6 hours on a single recharge.
That is the way it should be counted. Because you can;t work on tablet when screen is off right? (maybe if you listen to music)

Well we have different ways of thinking when saying battery life.
I'm always on Normal w/ IPS @ about 20%. I've never had to use Super IPS mode even on a sunny day. IPS to 80-90% in the bright sun and is very lucid (and I live in AZ where we've been having 85 degree weather lately!)
That being said, I get so much out of the Prime and I've only drained it twice. Last night I drained it after 2 days of decent usage and no charging. I've been marathoning 'Homeland' on my laptop and using my Prime for everything else. I'd say I've had about 16 hours of entire usage over the past couple days. I did power the Prime off before sleeping to compare it's percentage loss to when it is asleep to when powered off so perhaps it's not a fair assessment, but I did use it quite heavily including streaming youtube, regular browsing, downloading apps, trying to get a lock on GPS and playing a flash game.
I think we should measure battery life only with screen on time, the problem right now is that the prime doesn't show the battery stats. Anyother way or app to have battey stats?

I love the Sony Tablet except its battery life. for something that is so huge compared to the others similar products out there, I am sure that they could have squeezed a bigger battery into the unit.
The power capacity is pretty weak. Let's hope that Sony offers a higher capacity battery size. I would gladly pay to upgrade it.
That's weird, my battery life is fantastic. If I play games on it all day it'll last 8-12 hours, but if I just use it intermittently and moderately it'll easily last me a couple of days. On standby it only uses a couple percent a day if that!
I'm the same as unclespoon. Even during heavy use, I get about 9 hours, which is way better than my old Galaxy Tab could ever muster. Standby usage is crazy low, its fantastic!
Not sure what you mean either about being larger than most other devices. The Tablet's 9.4" screen is smaller than almost any other full-size Tab out there (including the iPad) and since the back curves, theres not actually a lot of usable rear space (look at how thin its getting at the thin end, now imagine trying to fit a battery in there!)
I'm not sure you'll find a Tab out there currently with a better combo of size/battery life. The chunkier Toshiba Thrive will last longer, the thinner Galaxy Tab's will last even less, and my Tablet S always outlasts my iPad, so it might just be your device. Try checking Settings -> About -> Battery Use
I'm of the same opinion as the op. My tablet s has dreadful battery life and especially when it isn't doing anything. (50% usage is system standby) my old galaxy 7 was far far better (charged about once a week)
I believe this may just be because it is new (only have 1 full charge) as my galaxy s2 was initially unimpressive and then lasted 3 days of moderate use without charge. Hoping the same will happen to my s1.

My only guess was that you did a shoddy job of conditioning the battery. My old Galaxy Tab (the first 7" one) was hopeless, but when I replaced it, I conditioned the battery better and it was a bit better.
My Tablet S lasts for days and days and the standby usage is tiny. Check whats using your battery in the Battery Use screen and get back to us, we might be able to help..
I noticed advanced wifi lock was causing massive amounts of wakelocks (8 hours out of 10 according to the stats in settings/about).

I noticed that as well. If you have Advanced WiFi lock activated the tablet won't go into deep sleep mode, there of massive battery usage. I still have Advanced WiFi lock on my tablet, but only activate it when I need to download/update something that takes time. Otherwise I turn it off. It's not worth the battry drain.
Wow. Your battery life are fantastic. 9 hours? That's huge. I have not used my Sony Tablet till flat but given the rate of battery loss think maybe the most is about 5 hours which is similar to what many reviewers are saying.
Just can't imagine that those reviewers are so far out of the ball park compared to you guys. I am using juice defender Beta. Not to sure if its helping or not. But at least if I not using WiFi it shuts it off automatically.
My battery used to drain badly during standby. I found that the Friend Stream service was preventing the tab from sleeping. Killed the service a while ago and battery has been fantastic since. Pushed it to 3 days with light use. About 3 hrs of browsing and facebook. My battery level is at 68%, been off power for 20h40 mins, and used for about 4hrs today - facebooking, Internet browsing. Note that no specific conditioning was performed.
What are the settings that you have on your Tablet? Auto brightness, background sync turned off ?
how did you stop friendstream, and what the heck is it, did you just kill the process and it stayed dead? (sometimes as u know u kill process but it will come back).

I acutally just uninstalled the crap-app. nothing I use anyway. It is an app for facebook, twitter and other social networks. So just get rid of it. Uninstall and be happy
my bad. I confused the HTC name and Sony name.
Social Feed Reader was misbehaving. Once started it kept running... rather than dropping off to sleep (and into Cached Apps).
Something wasn't right so I force stopped it and it stayed dead.
An additional note - the Setup, Applications, Running Applications feature isn't 100%. Some background apps aren't displaying as running or Cached. Go figure.
So any special method to stop the social feed reader?
I'm getting those kinds of numbers on mostly auto brightness (and sometimes lower, at night), with background sync turned on, WiFi sleep policy set to default, and no battery monitoring or saving apps running. The only thing I did was single initial conditioning cycle and since then its been great.
Also note that software-decoded video files will take a lot more of your battery than the equivalent properly encoded file. I havent had any trouble with Social Feed Reader, but I never even set it up and judging by the many stories around here, I would uninstall it if you're worried about battery..

Hi, that's good to know. Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately think I screwed up the initial conditioning. so I guess I will have to live with the 5 hour battery of my Tablet.

In Setup, Applications, Running Services have a look at the awake time (listed on the right side) of the running processes. You'll note that system processes (the ones with the Android icon) have been awake since last boot.... but you might finds others that are as well. I noted Social Feed Reader showing high awake time and decided to nuke it. Simply click the offending app. You'll be given the option to stop the app... which is what I did. It's an app so doesn't restart once killed. Hope that helps...
Final thought: at the top right of the screen there's a 'Show cached processes' option.
The could be an offending app in there. Kill any installed app you suspect might be a problem and see if that helps.

I have been using my TP docked all day. woke up this morning at like 9 with 100 on both dock + tablet and have been watching anime since . It's 8 now and my dock is 0 and my tablet is about to die as well. I'm at about 40% brightness, I was expecting better battery life though.

I get about 4-5 hours use from it doing simple tasks in low power mode.... 12 hours is a lie, if i use it on and off i can make it almost al day but that is with very minimal usage.
So i say u get about 5 hours low power mode and like 3-4 hours in normal mode ( nonstop usage).
jzen: I suggest you rma for that battery life, I have a lot of issues with the prime but battery is not one of them.

rooted ics, stock cpu frequency no special tricks.

I ran mine pretty hard yesterday.
12.5 hours from 100% to 7%.
No dock, all tablet.
Watched some Dexter on Netflix, Recorded Video, used max brightness, power save, full power etc.
Surfed, Streamed, GTAIII, you name it. Used Bluetooth while streaming / gaming.
That is far more than i would ever do in a normal day.
Gotta say I am happy. My Tab 10.1 only lasted about 5-6 hours under similar load.
I guess if I averaged out each day with normal use I'm getting between 9 and 10hours in normal mode with the screen at 50 to 75% brightness. I do a lot of gaming and surfing. Since my Prime is new I'm still am doing a lot of customization. That will tail off a bit and I suspect my battery life should go up a bit. I have not rooted yet though. When I do charge it takes about 2 hours to go from under 10% to 100% on the wall charger and it turned off. I'm real happy with that.

Here is my battery usage...though I will say that I am testing it for a battery spike usage so I did not use my prime at all during this time period...and you can see the issue I am having with the spike...but this is after a full charge with minimal use of just the browser from time to time....I am curious if anyone else is seeing this kind of battery spikes:

Frequently, battery "spikes" are just where there's no data for a moment--in otherwords, if you reboot your Prime, during the reboot there's a gap in the battery recording data that then looks like a spike on the graph. It could be that.
Sure the prime can idle for 2 days or more but if your interested in actual batter life during use it is realistically about 6 hours of battery life on just the prime. The dock will help you to get another 4-6 hours.
Again, non-stop usage you will get around 6 hours battery life (gaming and netflix).

I can constantly get 8 hours non stop usage out of mine with about 7-10% remaining.....just because something happens to you that doesn't mean we are all wrong or lying..at some point you need to realize the common denominator is you

THERE is no denying the battery life on this device is Great. WAY better than my Ipad with same type of usage. PRIME was rated at the top of tablets in battery life. Only a lil bit behind ipad2 but more than ipad1. IT clearly has the best battery life of any android tablet out there. AMAZING considering its also the most powerful tablet out now also.

It kicks Chuck Norris' ass, straight up
12 hours of 100% screen on+wifi is a *tremendous* amount of battery life in a netbook-type form factor with the dock. There's only a few that could possibly come close, but not without sacrificing weight, size or horsepower or cost - $650 is simply amazing for this kind of device....especially now that Ubuntu has been formally chrooted onto it.
But usage styles, manufacturing defects, you name it, will influence battery life.
One guy reported only getting 4-5 hours of solid tablet-only battery life, which sounds like a manufacturing defect.
I'm also extremely interested in getting a baseline "real" number - sounds like 8-9hours is 'bout right for wifi/screen on 100%
Can't wait to start tweaking the hell out of it's software wise, underclocking, smart radio on-off.
I really believed ASUS' 18 hour battery life claim, however I'm curious what it's going to take in real life.
A lot of guys will overclock the Tegra3 for more performance - they're already doing that.
I'm the opposite - give me as little clock as possible and max out the battery life - I *really* geek out when I can eek out another hour

Well you know since we rooted already, you can use system tuner pro to manually lower the Max speed to increase battery life even more. It also has some presets n there which I think it has its own power savings mode also. It might even be better than Asus
Power savings mode. Haven't tried it out yet.

At work we have an iPad 1 and I've been monitoring it's battry drain in standby last week:
Full 6 days standby, with Wifi ON and not used in meantime:
battery went from 58% to 54%.
With my prime I get 2-4% during 1 night!
And that's even with Wifi turned OFF and docked (auto airplane mode app)
The dock looses about 1-2% each night
Why does the iPad have such crazy battery life in standby mode + wifi on? Is it all about good written software (iOS, drivers and apps)? Or is it hardware related? Or both?
In other words: will it ever be possible for an Android tablet to get such great standby time when ICS get more mature? Or is it already possible on other devices and lays the problem within hardware/drivers from Asus?
I really dislike having to use auto airplane mode, because I sometimes have to wait 5-10 second for wifi to get connected and ready. But with wifi turned on, the standby drain is even greater.

use better batter stats to see what's causing your issue. I get great standby battery life + wifi on. plus 2% drain isn't bad at all in one night. my prime can easily get over 20hrs. on a charge with off and on usage. I get about 10hrs. or so with moderate to heavy usage. about 9hrs. real heavy usage. battery life dependent on several factors. as far as standby goes, like the other poster said, you are experiencing system or partial wakelocks. cutting down the frequency of updates can help or solve this. everytime you asleep and device goes off from a notification, its woke up out of sleep. then eventually goes back to sleep. this is a repeated cycle which causes extra battery drain during sleep. because device never gets a chance to sleep long because its always being disturbed by notifications constantly going off.

I know that my 2% idle drain is quite good regarding to current prime and firmware/drivers, but how can a 2% drain in 8-10 hours be good when the iPad drains only 4% in 6 days (that's 144 hours!!) ?
The difference is HUGE, so that's why I wondered if it's bad coding in Android, drivers, Apps or maybe the used hardware that consumes just quite a lot more than iPad. Is 2% also common with other andoid tablets?
And if it's really software related: can and will it ever be fixed or at least reduced?

When in standby my prime is always in "deep sleep" and I don't see any interuptions. But I sure will try better battery app.
Then again: this is all with wifi off and iPad had default settings with wifi on and still consumes way less
My ipad 1 have a great standby time too, comparing it to my Prime, My iphone 3gs has great standby time to comparing to my Galaxy Note. BUT it is too bad I didn't buy those stuff to be there looking pretty, I bought them to be able to USE them. If my stuff stays on standby a lot of time, seems like I really don't need it.
On my home network, I get about .3%/hour battery use on standby. I have wifi configured to stay on when the screen is off, and I have a number of apps that synchronize in the background (gReader, TweetCaster, email (X2 accounts), Gmail, a tasks app, calendar, etc.).
The worst standby that I get is on my work network, where I get between .5%/hour and 1%/hour. I believe it's something to do with the router at work, which also causes problems with my HP Envy 14 notebook. Note that the difference in standby life is absolutely consistent and quantifiable.
At .3%/hour, my Prime would last for 333 hours. At .5%/hour, my Prime would last for 200 hours. Worst case scenario is that at 1%/hour, my Prime would last for 100 hours.
Quite honestly, I'll take a Prime that lasts between 100 and 333 hours on standby while running all sorts of useful background tasks over an iPad that last for however long while running few if any background tasks. My Prime is more USEFUL to me that way.
And, even if the iPad runs the same sorts of background tasks that I've described here, 100 to 333 hours of standby is perfectly fine. Is it as good as an iPad? Clearly, not, in this case. But even so, it's also a distinction without much meaning.

Its not an issue with Android because I can get 2 months on standby with my Nook Color running CM7. The tf201's standby time is likely due to things on the kernel level rather than Android.

I was just going to post how crazy my nook color is with power consumption, but thats not the same level of processor that the Prime has.
Not sure if this has already been said? But iOS battery% behave very different than Android battery%. I noticed that when i got my first android device after using an ipod touch for a while. (that was a while ago so maybe things changed with iOS 5x never used that)
The iOS% will kinda adapt to your usage. If you play a 3d game on high brightness the battery% will go down pretty fast, but if you go back to standby they go up again. After some hour of gaming you can be down to 60% but after another one in standby it could go up to 80% again...
In general it feels to me like they lie "a bit". It could very well be that if you used said ipad it would drop to like 30% after 5mins of using. I found the way it behaves very annoying. But as I said that was on my ipod touch, maybe the ipad is different.
Android battery% are much more "direct" but also more accurate in my opinion. With my ipod I never knew how much juice is really left. With my phone or tablet now i know exactly what i can do until it shuts down.
That being said, i'm pretty sure there's still alot of room for improvement with the prime. The software is just an early version basically - all they did up to now is make sure everything works more or less and that its stable for most people. I'm confident the next patch will make things alot better in many aspects.
And i wonder how my prime will be like in half a year with a perfect custom rom

That's true, but isn't Teg3 and the new Pad line supposed to be fairly efficient?
With the majority of my time spent at the lowest clocks, the drain I get does seem kind of ridiculous. That opinion stated, here's another: the battery-life on the Prime is still fantastic. I can almost push it an entire work-week on one charge so long as I'm not trying to game or anything, that's a pretty stout stand-by for most electronics. The OG iPad just happens to be so underwhelmingly powerful that its standby is much greater.
I personally believe that to coax away the random locks/reboots they raised the voltage values so that we're drawing unneeded power; however, I for some reason have not ventured into my Prime to see what they have the values set to so I have nothing to back this up. Just a guess.

If its truly in standby/sleep then the processor should be essentially off. In the case of the Nook Color the primary CPU can power off entirely.
The issue is the dock, when mines not docked it can idle for over 60 days (according to battery widget app) and when it's docked I lose over 10% a night or more

The dock is not the issue, neither is Android and neither is the processor. It comes down to what apps you're running, live wallpapers, radios, etc. Or just good ol' fashioned faulty units...or poorly built ROMs/kernels.
I'm running stock, rooted .15 with performance mode on always. When I wake up in the morning, I unplug my docked Prime before I go to work. When I get home 10 hours later...dock is at 100% and Prime at 99%. That's with dock connected, performance mode, bluetooth wifi and GPS all ON and no "battery saving" apps of any kind running. And that's been consistent for the last two weeks. I DO, however, kill all apps in the recent apps menu. I don't force stop them or anything, just open up the recent menu and swipe them away.
The only time I've gotten battery drain was when I left an N64 emu, an SNES emu, Sixaxis and two other games running in the background. That ate about 10% battery or so in 10 hours.
I left my prime unplugged for 8 hours, wifi on, and it was at 99%. So I don't know what the OP is talking about.
Additionally, iPad doesn't have a good clue as to what real multi-tasking is like, and therefore doesn't update as much because it doesn't have services running in the background.
Android does have services running in the background. Give and take. You want your data always refreshed? What intervals? etc.
That's all configurable, so you really decide how long your battery lasts.
Advice to OP: Read more, get smarter, post less dumb crap.

ASUS advertise up to 12 hours on their website...
I'd expect to get at least half that with normal use..
How long does your battery life last with normal use?
Like ebook/pdf reading, some browsing, some youtubing and maybe some
light gaming?
I dont have much running on mine, i always try to kill backround processes.
I always have it on low brightness and turn the wifi off when not in use.
I usually dont make it much longer that 4 hours with light use... maybe 5 hours.
I use mine mostly for pdf/ebook reading. A little browsing/youtubing here
and there...
Is this normal or do I have a defective unit that I should replace?
Other than this I have no problems with the prime.

My wife and I get about 8 hours heavy use. Video, nook & browsing.
With similar/more usage than what you describe, I get much more than advertised...at 70% right now on performance mode at 7 hours at full brightness with wifi never sleeping. Keep in mind their 12 hours was playing video the whole time. I'm ridiculously impressed so far.

I can't tell you exactly how much I get, because I never got down to under 20%. To be honest I mostly use it with the dock, watching video and browsing outisde (+IPS) on never ran into battery issues after 2-4 hours.
So I never every until now worried about the battery, it was just there.
it really does last quite well, im used to charging my phone up every night and i cant get this thing to drain quickly, i wanted to do some full drain cycles on the battery and it actually took hours and hours to empty it.
you wont be disappointed!
Honestly, coming from an Apple employee, it kicks the iPad's ass not only at battery life, but at charging too. This thing charges in just about the same time it takes to charge an iPhone.

I get about 16 to 1 day and 6 hours with the dock (That's using it very wildly, meaning not sparingly).
I surf alot, watch videos, play games, test settings.
I use IPS+ sometimes only but most of the time I have my brightness level on about 70%

I get like 6 hours on screen time generally....pretty bad. Probably a lot of bugs to work out with the tegra 3 still, hopefully Asus is working on it. I do not even do anything that intensive, just web browsing, chatting, taking notes, don't even watch videos or play games too often. Battery life would probably plummet if I played games.

Fully charged at 1pm yesterday, after flashing Primulous from cwm touch, i have been benchmarking, browsing, took about 10 min of 1080p video, running wifi analyzers to configure repeater in my house, left on overnight, on balanced mode. Woke up at 5am, have been youtubing, browsing. Its 8:30 and battery just hit 20%
I AM IMPRESSED to say the least, battery life is so good due to running "minimal" when flashing Primulous, wasn't quite this good when on stock, with bloated apps
I have just about every tab on the market in the past 2 years. iPad, iPad2, Transformer w/dock, Acer, HTC Flyer, Kindle Fire, Galaxy tab 7, galaxy tab 10.1 and now the Prime w/dock. The Prime battery outlasts all of them except the gTab for me. I get about 2 days between charges prior to the dock and about 3 with the dock. Stats right now are at 70% tablet 92% dock with 10h 36m on batter and 2 hours of screen on.
With WiFi running at 10h and taking up 81%of the battery. I switched it off this morning to see if I get an improvement since I dont use it and I definitely see a HUGE improvement.
I've always had issues with leaving my WiFi on connected all the time. Lasts about 4-6 hours with WiFi on all the time. Now that I have it on JUST when the screen is on, it lasts about the good 6-9 hours. Anyone having this issue too?

With web browsing, ebook reading, and some YouTube I get 12-14 hours when my screen is set to "power saver" performance mode and with the screen at about 25% brightness. If I have the Prime plugged into the keyboard dock I get 15-18 hours depending on what I am doing.
First thing. Don't kill background tasks. Unless your Prime is seriously suffering performance issues you should ignore any background task that is running. Compulsively killing tasks will actually drain your battery faster. Do you have a lot of apps syncing? Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc? If so turn off the ones you don't use often or at least set them to update no faster than once an hour. Also, set the WiFi to turn off when the screen is off, this will improve standy battery significantly.
If you keep getting battery drain, before you return the Prime do a factory reset and see if that solves the battery drain. There could be some system process that isn't ending correctly and keeping the Prime awake. Factory resets are wonders at solving this kind of glitch.
