Hotspot hack..? - HTC Rezound

Looking through the menus on the ##778 on the rezound I noticed what was used on the incredible to "hack" into the hotspot capabilities of it. Can we use this for the rezound? as follows..
1. dial ##778 call.
2. edit view - enter password 000000
3. go to security sub menu
and here is where I'm a bit unsure and want to get some insight before trying it out....
4. S.IP DUNN User name
on the incredible for this step you enter [email protected]
on the LTE phones it should be (as it's duplicated above as your ppp user id
[email protected] OR would we stull use [email protected] and have access to this on 3G only?
Would this get us the bypass we need, or is this verification handled onboard with the SIM card?
Just thinking out loud here guys, all input welcome!

I would say try it and post your results

Nope, doesn't work

I used PDAnet all last week, it worked like a champ, great speeds as long as you have a 4g signal. No issues at all.
Oh, Win7.

Ever since I have had the tbolt, I have had Verizon's hotspot work without having it on my plan. I just figured it was promotional, was it not? It works on my rezound as well.

It was a promotional thing, but seems to have stuck to some accounts. One of my accounts still has it, not sure why. I pay for the unlimited hotspot as I am an employee, and I am not much for stealing, but not the line I am speaking of. Not sure what the rhyme or reason is, probably would remove it when changing devices so if you stick with devices that use regular 4G sim cards and not micro sims I would bet it will stick around until its audited off.

that's interesting that the promotion stuck to some accounts . I don't really think of it like stealing I suppose except in the sense that I'm taking advantage of an app Verizon included to be paid for *shrug*. Since I use an app like PDAnet or something else anyways it's not THAT big of a deal. It's just a lot easier to turn on tether and sit down at my computer, or ANY computer. rather than download an app on every pc I would use it on and physically plug in the phone everytime.. not that it would last more than an hour tethered without being plugged up or anything.
anyhow, so as of this point we're at VZ's whim for tethering?

it turns out windows live have the same feature as htc. The site can also track your phone and lock and erase phone. I think htc took the idea!
Well... I guess both of them got the idea from Apple's MobileMe. Although remote wipes could be performed on many smartphones before that (through Exchange Active Sync or the Blackberry whatever it's called service).
Still great that MS added this to Windows Live. Especially the possibility to let your phone ring if you're unable to find it will come handy - I "lose" my phone quite frequently in my own flat.
I think there was a rumor some few weeks ago saying the HTC devices will get an update with the HTCSence.com features, but nothing right now.

[MOD] VZW 3g hotspot app for froyo leak

How to use the 3g hotspot app for free
I looked and looked and didnt find this anywhere except for eclair and just got done doing mine a little bit ago as the steps are different now.
You used to be able to select dial up mode in wireless settings but now if you have the new froyo leak. Now you dial **usbui and change usb mode to modem. Plug in to pc fire up qpst add port once you see phone select start clients/service programming. next click read from phone, password should be typed in already as 000000. scroll over to m.ip and select the active profile, should be profile 0 and change tethered nai to [email protected] the phone will reboot and your good to go start tethering with apmode. Some may choose to reenter the usb modem settings and change it back to pda(the first step) but i do not see it as neccessary. If this has been posted by someone else already feel free to delete and if in wrong catagory feel free to move.
Just remember these steps are for FROYO leak anly not for eclair users although they may work for that also just dont have an eclair phone to test on.
I have done this for a long time and never encoured any charges although i am not liable for any problems you may come across, ive never had any. As long as your not seeing the verizon webpage when you access web via your phone then your set.
Any questions feel free to ask but i may just tell you to google it.
There was a reason you didn't find threads on it.

Why can't that file just be removed from the ROM? Would it cause the rom to just not work at all?
Forgive me for probably not using the correct terminology but does the mobile hotspot app handle tethering the same as say the wifi tether app? I just wonder if one sets off the flag to verizon where the other wouldn't.

It will break wifi if you remove the module. It ties into dhd.ko, the wifi driver.
Play nice everybody
Just got off the phone with Verizon. Been using the 3g hotspots for several days now tethered more then a gig so and I called and just asked if I was being billed for the hotspots app and they said there is nothing on my account about it that I've never had it and I would never be charged for it unless I actually signed up by changing my plan. So I'm gonna keep using mine. If anything changes I will let everyone know but I personally believe it is safe to use. I think that moniters for when you hit the 5 gig mark on your data then they start to throttle it. But this is just my opinion. But I think its a good one.;-)
Not to mention I've been using it for a pretty long while on eclair before froyo.
In fact I'm tethering right now to my gtab.
I have a couple problems with that.
First, if you admitted it, your account was likely flagged.
Second, VZW reps change their stories each time you call.
The monitor wasn't in place on eclair.

Does the same thing hold true if you wanted to use WiFi Tether for Root Users? Maybe this has already been answered, but I'm just looking for confirmation. TIA...

If it's any consolation, VZW doesn't have a flagging system, at least not one the frontline reps can access, so mentioning it on a call won't flag you. And the reason the stories change each time you call is because you might get a guy that's adept at what he does on the first call, then the next call you might get an outsourced moron from AFNI, and the next time get a person taking their first week of calls....
When you call, they are going to the features list, and looking for the feature called "Mobile Broadband Hotspot 2GB $20". Upon seeing it is not there, that is what they tell you.
What you NEED is a tech rep (like myself) to go into the back-side of the billing system or the switch, and check your records there. The switch will tell me if something is 'off' about your data, like if a rate limit has been added. The billing system will tell me if there are DUN (dial up networking) connections being reported. But, in all likelihood, the groups doing any kind of monitoring are **NOT** the folks taking your calls. They work in the switches or corporate, and their goings-on are a mystery to us that do take your calls. So, they could be minutely tracking each byte and I, as a tenured Tech rep, wouldn't have the foggiest idea what they were doing.
Just to share with you how 'in the loop' we in the call centers are kept, I had an engineer call me last week complaining that his test device couldn't authenticate phone calls. I asked for the number, and it pulls up a device listed as "Test Device 7". I asked for the make/model of the phone, and he tells me, "I can't tell you that, it's unreleased and classified". I then tell him, without even a brand, I can't create a new authentication key and give him steps to program it into the phone. He still wouldn't tell me anything, so I told him to seek help with the person that gave him the top secret phone and hope they can do my job too.
if the op wants to disregard the warnings and tether...then by all means tether...but theres a reason monitoring was put into froyo...and i cant imagine it was for our benefit...so meh

I didnt admit it i told them a family member had my phone and when i got it back the hotspot app was on my homescreen and wasnt for sure what they did with it. Besides even if they do charge me which i doubt they will its only gonna be 30 bucks. I can handle that to let everyone else know what really happens. But its just like people worryjng about sending back rooted phones with changes for warrenty replacements. I just wipe my numbers out and send it rooted boot animation changed everything even a custom rom and theme one time. They dont pay attention to the phones. They get them plug them in and flash them to stock. Just mt two cents. When i recieve my feb bill ill let you know whether or not i get charged anythjng for tethering.

[Q] how can i get skype to work?

i have tried many different builds and can't login
where can i find the latest and most updated hacked version?
or is there anything else i am missing that i need to know?
i'm using blazn 2.2.2 by tiad8
i had the same problem. What worked for me was that I backed up skype + data in my galaxy tab using titanium backup and restored the backup in my tp2 android build. I could login then.
thanks for the tip! i will try with my G2 backup then..
update: i need to root my G2 for titanium which i wont cuz i dont really need it
could you share those files so i can try?
Well my backup contains my skype account details so that's of no use to you.

Buy a native Android phone?
We can't expect every single 3rd party app to run on our devices...
I'd like to know why a backup of the app works while installing it fresh doesn't... if there is a workaround, that's always better than simply "not working".
Perhaps someone has a skype apk? I've never used skype, sorry.

There's a bug with WEP, no RHOD can connect to WEP without some fixing.
If you have a choice, GET RID OF WEP IMMEDIATELY!
It's extremely insecure, and should be avoided at all costs!
However, there is fixes. Read the FAQ.

Will freezing/locking the TetheringManager allow for "free" tethering?

*puts on flame retardant suit*
I swear I used the search button but didn't find a clear answer in any threads.
....and I'm not trying to start a debate about the morals of tethering without paying for a tethering plan.
I simply want to know if freezing and/or locking "TetheringManager" with an app like Titanium Backup or App Quarantine will allow you to tether (and this is the important part ) without being caught by your provider.
Thanks!

Yes. You can tether for free by freezing it. I don't know if they can track it at all but I've done it a couple times and never heard anything from them or seen anything on my bill about it... just beware data usage.
As far as morals of it... There are no morals behind it, all it is, is using data. It is a feature that is built into the hardware, we pay the phone company for the data, we should be able to use it however we like.
I haven't done it but I've read people having mixed results. I have also read an AT&T employee mention that they "know more about our data usage than we think" so I'd say be careful with it. I've heard different browsers on your PC have a bit to do with it as well, probably avoid Safari.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
I don't think that that will work. A guy at the tech support for at&T explained to me that they can tell if your using the phone for tethering because your computer has a different ip and mac address then your phone. Their server receives a request from your tethered computer, they can see that that request did not come from your phone.
You could try it, they warn you by text and phone 3 times before they switch your data plan to a tethering one.

Seems almost too easy.
People are fairly sure that browser useragent is one of the main triggers. Also, there are a lot of apps that are "obviously" coming from a PC.
If you tether another Android device (like a tablet), it seems like you'll be fine. I tether my Tab 10.1 all the time with no problems.
Using a encrypted VPN stops all chances of AT&T knowing a thing

TTL is also a very big possibly of the detection method. All data goes through att proxy servers and is analyzed. Only way to make sure is to use a vpn. Around a year ago, a company in Europe said they could analyze all packets, regardless of encryption status.

After reading up on this it would appear that there is no 100% sure way to tether without being caught. Various methods have been tried with varying results. I'm willing to bet that it's simply the amount of data you consume that determines if you get caught.

I'd imagine that's about rite. I've tethered for short periods and never had an issue. However i'm guessing if your usage suddenly jumps or looks strange, it throws a flag up and they look a bit deeper at that point. I'm guessing there's gotta be something that triggers the "deeper analysis" of your usage. I can't image they literally scan everything that comes through the network, just to see if someone's tethering without the correct plan, that would seem like a big waste of resources.
of course this is all just my speculation, I could very well be completely wrong.
Just pay for the tethering plan, like most of us do. There are genuine reasons data costs so much and is limited. I'm not going into that because I'm sure you can figure out the reasons.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
TTL is the main way they detect it. Coming from our phones it starts out as 64. If you are tethering to a windows machine the TTL will be 128. In other words, if ATT sees a value higher than 64, there is a good chance that that traffic is not originating from you phone. The safest way to tether is to use "Tether" by Koushik Dutta, the dev for ROM manager. It is not available in the market because att has blocked it,but you can grab it from clockworkmod.com. It essentially sets your phone up to be a proxy so att thinks the traffic is originating from your phone, thus having a TTL value lower than 64. To take thing even a step further....pay for a secure vpn provider. I use tigervpns in the market or play...I hate the new name! It cheap, fast and secure. Happy tethering!

I don't know if your issue is in any way similar to mine other than the username and password not matching error but I have been dealing with this since march without any results or responses. What I finally found out last week with a very helpful VZW rep was that there are two rezounds associated with my account and prior to this year both phones were able to log on with the account user name and password without any problem. In March of 2012 I noticed I was getting this error and I associated it to the many Roms I was trying out. Long story short the rep asked me to create an account associated to this phone only and everything worked perfectly. In my opinion this is another one of those times whem VZW makes changes to the process without informing there users or reps for that matter.
Hope this helps......
