GPS maps - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

what GPS map+navigation do you use in order to make it work offline?.
has anyone tried this /or will this work on our player?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007132&page=1
thanks

I use Sygic Aura. Works like a charm.

thanks, i will try it.
but it's not free, hope i could get an Asia Map

Yes I know. It is expensive but I have had a good experience with it ever since my iPhone 3G days. I have the pan European version and I have used it across 5 countries with good results.
Navigon is a good choice too, sometimes it is more precise but Sygic has 3D map, even 3D monuments and buildings in some cities. Only thing missin is a "talk an drive" function to dictate destinations. This I have found only in some very specialized or local applications.

You could try this FREE one on the Market called NavFree. It's crowd sourced so keeps being updated and the maps are downloaded to your device so no internet connection is needed in normal use.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.navfree.android.OSM.ALL
Worth a try.
John

How well does the GPS do in terms of lock times when fully standalone (no data whatsoever)?

No U.S support!

I haven't downloaded it yet, are you sure about US support? On their web site says they use Openstreet http://www.openstreetmap.org/ and they seem to support "the world".

for some reason there is no download option for U.S, they even have Mexico and Canada, no u.s.

@geonahta / all
on which country did you use the sygic?.
is your device rooted?
also do you use the sygic without wifi connection.?
need more info/help, coz my device wont lock to gps satellite in my place Manila, PH (without the wifi conn)
thanks much.

I used Sygic in UK, France, Spain, Poland, Ukraine, and Greece. European maps are 3 GB size, so there is no need of wifi after that. If the version you are buying has the country covered then I don't see why I would not work. Read the info before downloading. Some versions don't offer detailed road maps for all regions / villages etc.
PS: The algorithms of search, POI, and route are working on your phone. Again, no need of wifi.

update!
Got it working! its great.. thanks everyone.
Sygic + Mapdroyd
on non-rooted device...
hope to use google maps navigation soon on non-rooted
===============================================
is your samsung yp-g70/wifi5.0 rooted?..
thanks for your followup, im still isolating the problems.
hope i could make this work soon.

Hello, after installing the ndrive I can't open the the app!Why is that? How did you install Sygic?

I installed Sygic and does seem to have US maps. I downloaded Texas (256mb!) and so far looks like it will work. I think half the reason the download is so large is it looks like it uses Ivona voices and downloads most of them. English Emma is great! Will try out the NAV on my way home tonight. Looks like it's only a 7 day trial.
I just used my wifi connection, took about 10 minutes to download 256mb.
edit: What does Sygic cost, just the cost of the map you download? Do you buy maps of the Sygic site (in Euros?), $20 for USA seems OK if it's a one tiime charge (and if it works as well as Google Nav).

NavFree
You wrong man, they do have U.S. maps. It is called NavFree USA . I have downloaded it; however, I got it from the Samsung App Store since I cannot find it in the Android Market.

I dont know if this has been mentioned before but in the samsung apps you will find a free offline gps for it.

Used Sygic on my home tonight. Works well, now I need a car charger that works (my Optimus one doesn't charge it). Sygic has a lot of nice features, speed limit sign, est time you'll arrive at destination, very good voices...
Guess I'll have to look at that Samsung thing too...
edit: Pulling Navfree USA Map now... at 1gb and only halfway loaded! No one state option which really sux. But it's free!
edit2... my free memory went from 3.8gb free to 400mb free and it's still not all there... not looking good.

Based on info in this thread, I also installed from Samsung Apps, and am downloading the USA maps. Our downloads must be "fighting" each other, because it's been almost 20 minutes now, and that slider/progress bar is barely budging ... Hopefully, it'll be moveable to SD??

I left the download to run overnight, and it's finished this morning. App seems to be working ok. It looks like it put itself on the (external) SD card, about 84MB?
I haven't tried it for navigation yet, but it's showing my location approx. correctly.
I don't know how long it took for the download of the US map, but probably at least several hours. Then again, I have a TomTom that also takes several hours to update, so this seems typical.
Jim

First time I downloaded Navfree from Samsung apps, only gave me option to download "USA". After 2gb+ of data it still wouldn't load. I uninstalled and installed Navfree USA from the Market https://market.android.com/details?...EwMiwiY29tLm5hdmZyZWUuYW5kcm9pZC5PU00uVVNBIl0.. It gave option to just download Texas. First try it said fail, second try it started and only took about 10 minutes. Files are in Android/data folder, 312mb. App is real glitchy but does work. Won't find a street number, unless you have wifi and search for it in Google, then it will locate it. Contact addresses don't work "next release".
I also have Sygic on my 5.0. It works much better, used 675mb (for Texas), but I don't think I'll buy it since Navfree is free, and hopefully they'll work out the bugs. The voices and UI on Sygic are much better.
Wish Google would let you download full maps!

TomTom 7

Hi,
tested tt7 on my Ameo
all work file with new maps as well..
Attached pic..
That is good news, thanks!
Do you have the program available for download or is it already available on TomTom's website?
I heard that it is just a cosmetic overhaul of version 6 and that the 6.75 maps will also work with it. Can you confirm?
Thanks again.
Cheers,
Please don't post TT7 warez links here.
Feel free to discuss but avoid posting downloads...

I can confirm the following:
- You can download a v7 map of a city of your choice at zero cost as a taster
- MapShare is there!
- Reports itself as v7450
- Compatible with at v7 maps, v6 not tested, why would you want a map THAT old?
- Works with TomTom Home 2 (but TTH2 reports that an invalid version is installed at the moment)

The download is a taster version stripped from the diamond rom. It is currently or was posted in the kaiser software section. And in that section they allow the taster version, but discussions of downloading maps other than from TOM TOM are not allowed.
No TT6 maps do not work, the free one city maps work great. And some have purchased maps for the tomtom 720 from TomTom and they work on the kaiser. See that forum for more discussion too.
I loved the speed limit warning and the ability to update the map by yourself (however see my comment below on some problems enounterd in this regards). I also love the voice warning for red light camera, speed camera, as well as school zones (very critical feature in Australia).
I was testing out the ability to enter missing road speed limit. It let me do it. However, whatever changes I recorded does not seem to be saved. If I travel the same stretch of road again, or plan a route covering the changed road, the simulation showned only the speed of travel but showed blank for the speed limit.
Anyone has success updating speed limit?
BTW, you can move the application out of your internal memory to any place you want. In my case, I moved the application to \Microdrive\Program Files\Navigator. This would save you lots of device memory.

out of memory
anyone getting, 'out of memory' fault ?
I got that a couple of times. Not too often. I install mine on microdrive.
Anybody having a problem installing? I click on the cab and then it asks me where I want to install it, I choose microdrive and then it spins...and spins...and spins...but the progress bar never moves forward.
The device operates - I can use other programs etc. but the install won't progress and there's no way to cancel except soft resetting and then everything's fine.

You must first install into device memory, then move it out later. The spinning seems to go on and on, but be very patient because it will eventually install. I made the same mistake as you in the begining thinking that nothing is happening and I kept soft reseting. Just let it spin for longer and take a long coffee break then come back.

No, not THAT long. Mine took probably around 5 minutes for the progress bar to start moving. If it is 2 1/2 hours, then it's not running. Gee, your coffee break IS looooong.
Which ROM are you using? Ever tried it in a different ROM?

Only by trying out will you find out, I think. Perhaps you could first back up your device and try out the latest irus Ultra Vanilla
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402654
The AP4 has the auto-rotate and TouchFlo, both of which consumes lots of resources. It may or may not be the cause of your inability to install. Others with AP4 might be able to share their experience here. However, there is no harm trying, is there?

Which GPS software works for the X10 mini?

I loved iGO but I heard that it doesnt not work on mini's resolution.
Anyone know any other great GPS that work?
Copilot works up to the point where you enter your destination. It seems copilot does not work with the SE T9 keyboard, so you cant in letters ie. address/postcode.
IGO doesn't work, low resolution is problem. I viewed only 1/4 of screen...
Try Sygic mobile maps...
I have Navigon on my X10 Mini Pro and it works great.
gps
Mine came it Wisepilot and works fine, but was a down side uses the 3G connection. I need to find a way to maket it not use the 3G connection.

get it from Playnow application on your phone and there's an option to download the whole map to your sd card
that way no data connection required
I did what you said, updated the version, didn´t install any maps on the sd card. And said that my license is expired. eheheheh
May better to install Navigon. Can I also install the maps on the sd card?
Thx
Try Sygic Mobile Maps 10
Wisepilot totally sucks, bad interface bad graphics, no voice.
Navigon looks good, just like iGO with lane informaton, voice as well.. Currently downloading and will test it..
Sygic doesn't look too great, but at least its got the basics....
Navigon looks good, for what I saw last of it like 2 or 3 year ago. Going to test with this too, the only thing is I only have the milestone right now. My brother is going to buy the X10 mini pro so I would be a good thing to do some research first.
Navigon
Installed yesterday Navigon. I've tried this morning on my way to work, looks pretty good. But I'm a rookie with GPS's.
Nice thing, is that indicates gas stations, farmacy's and toll's.

Guys,
Install "Anysoftkeyboard" from Android Market. Set it up so it's the default keyboard instead of the Sony T9 rubbish. It's very accurate for a qwerty keyboard but what's more cool about it, it works full with Co-pilot

As ganstakillerz said AnysoftKeyboard is good and also Better Keyboard is a good alternative, full qwerty and very accurate in portrait mode.

Guys I used GoogleMaps Navigation last night to go to London and back, it works really well I am VERY impressed. Very easy to change route and the MiniPro screen is BIG and CLEAR to use the app perfectly for navigation. VERY happy about this, because my old phone was a Nokia E72 and I loved it because of OVI MAPS. I think I won't even try other navigation software on my minipro UNLESS they have speed camera database included (which GoogleMaps does not unfortunately )
Sygic is better than Navigon.Navigon is nice on screen
I tried Wisepilot today and it worked brilliantly. In terms of quality, for me, so far it's a coin toss between GoogleMaps Navigation and Wisepilot.

I can't find that on Market or APKtor, did you buy it from their web site directly? Offline maps is a big attraction...

Style over substance?

So, I’ve had the device for over a week now. I bought the phone as a spare one as I’m traveling abroad a lot and was tempted by navigation (Nokia Drive) and Zune subscription. The phone seemed to be a great option to put a local sim in.
But:
1. No way to change mms settings for local sim
2. Nokia Drive isn’t offline navigation as promised. It still needs the internet to calculate or recalculate the route.
3. Zune is impossible to use as there’s this annoying clicking noise while skipping the track
4. The ringtone and vibration is so soft that I keep missing a lot of phone calls
5. Facebook app for wp7 is a mess when it comes to messages section which I often use. Some messages come as text (baked in integration) some come via Facebook app and some don’t come at all (despite being notified by Facebook app). App developer advises to use web version to access the messages.
6.No WiFi priority (even if you’re in WiFi range and the phone is in standby it still uses 3G, rather than WiFi to get push notifications and sync with your email, calendar, etc)
Don’t get me wrong. The build quality and the screen is absolutely fantastic, but performing day to day tasks is a struggle! Oh, I don’t have the battery problem. Battery life’s been really great for me.
What do you think guys?
WiFi priority would make a big difference I reckon.
I've taken to switching 3g off when I'm either in the office or at home on a wifi network and it has noticeably prolonged battery life.
Nokia do need to have a look at releasing some software fixes sharpish. I read somewhere else that the two updates they are promising in the next month were on the cards before the phone went on sale which smack of a rushed release date to me.
Nokia maps does work offline at least mine does Yu have to download the maps for the country tough it won't just have maps for the world built in as that would take gigs of space

Hey buddy..
nice info buttttttttt
1) Navigation is offline if you have downloaded the maps and have gps on ... i tested it this morning with network off.....and it worked fine .
2) vibration has been mentionwd a few times and nokia are improving the strenth in the next update in a few days or so now so thats cool as i agree its to soft .
3) wifi priority is also being fixed in the next update along with xbox sync or straem to xbox thing its basically an app whoch you can link to your xbox and play music wirelessly through your tv or view pics on you phone through your tv etc ..
4) facebook are making a new app for windows 7 which will make it more like the iphone facebook app so that should be ready v v v soon .... well actually knowing fb a yrs time haha
5) zune is bollox i agree and hopefully we wont have to use it soon as i can see this phone being hacked v v soon to use mass storage
have a great day buddy and excuse my spelling lol i cant spell v well hahah
I don't get the Zune hate it is by a long long way the best media manager I have used though if i had a clock that would annoy me but I think thats something to do with your setup as mine dos not. Only thing I found is its a bit slow to start and its remote control is a use is a bit iffy. As for what its sposed to be used for is managing music a challange anyone to five a better easier smoother bit of software. Esp when ot come to album art and fixing track names etc

No. Nokia Drive doesn't work offline. Check here http://www.nokia.co.uk/gb-en/support/faq/?action=singleFAQ&caseid=FA136278_en_US
Zune is lovely if not this annoying clicking sound while changing track.
The problem is, the device is not really usable at the moment. I know, there will be updates, but why to rusj it to the market.
I want something that works out of the box rather than wait for updates.
Don't get me wrong. I love the device but at the moment it doesn't do what was supposed to do.
Seems perfectly usable to me.
On a side note all smartphones have issues on release however I don't see one which makes this phone unusable.
2. Nokia drive has offline maps.
3. No clicking sound on Zune for me.
4. Phone volume could be higher so I turn up the volume more than normal but isn't a deal breaker.

If this is true then the battery life will be pretty sweet I reckon. My phone has been on for 5 hours today so far with 3G off and has used 14% with lots of texts, couple of phone calls and an app install (bandwidth tester to check that I was using the wifi connection and not 2G). That's normal use for me and yesterday, I had used 25% by this time, so much improved.
Well how odd re offline maps I just tryed it again and dissable network and works fine ??? Unless it allows for the maps even though network is turned off ,?
You're trying to say that white is black! It doesn't work offline. You've got your offline maps, but if you want to search for POI or find a route it needs the internet connection.

[Q] Google Now Work Commute card

Hello,
Recently upgraded to a phone that supports Google Now. Seems pretty nice except there's one thing that is bugging the crap out of me. The work commute card never appears by itself. I always have to open Google Now, go down to the bottom and click "More" and then the commute card loads. I've been trying to figure it out for a couple days now and it's pretty annoying.
I only have 2 cards set up that I want to see: Weather & Work Commute. I attached a screenshot of what Google Now looks like. The widget is the same, only displays the one card for weather.
Any suggestions? I would really like for Google Now to give me my work commute card without me having to explicitly go into Google Now and click More.

Use in English from U.S. on T-Mobile's 4G LTE?

I got this phone as gift. It was purchased in China, but I live and use it in the U.S. using English. Does anyone have any experience doing that?
I was able to get English versions of Yahoo, Skype and Facebook and am limping along with a Chinese Firefox installed, but I still have a numerous software problems:
1) Even in English mode, there are keys still in Chinese and almost all pre-installed Apps are still in Chinese (I can't even get it to "'auto-detect'" other than China time or show the temp in other than Celsius!?!) 2) I'm unable to download Google Play App. 3) Searches via the Chinese Firefox acts like I'm searching from China. I often have to explicitly search for / enter an URL to get what I want. 3) The specs here (at gsmarena.com) says it has a Radio and I see a "Radio" App listed, but I don't see an Icon for it (even in the Folders). 4) I haven't hooked it up to a cell plan yet, but I've read indications (and perhaps they're not for this exact model) that it will only work U.S. 4G or even 3G vs. 4G LTE. I'm Hoping to use it with T-Mobile 4G. It's got great specs, and I believe it costs ~$120 U.S. new, so even as a camera, mobile e-mailer, WiFi Browser, Facebook'er and 3G phone, it's a great deal. Appreciate any help or ideas to get help.

Sounds like you're having issues similar to what I had. Never fear! I am in almost the exact same situation.
I got mine from GearBest last September shortly after it came out because it was such a good deal for the hardware you get. However, I knew ahead of time, and I'm sorry to tell you, that it will not work with T-mobile's 4G LTE. It will, however, work with T-Mobile's HSPA+ (I think it's still considered 3G but it's also sorta better than 3G? Every cell provider uses the same names to refer to totally different technologies, so it's all very confusing.). HSPA+ is more than enough for me; you can still stream 1080p video without buffering as long as you've got a good signal. Maybe web pages won't load instantaneously, but whatever.
My main issue right off the bat was that there was some preinstalled app absolutely draining my battery. The phone was hot most of the time and died by mid afternoon with limited usage. So I needed to fix it.
I'm inferring from your request that you haven't yet tried to root the device. This is the main way I know of to fix your problems. It will allow you to install any of the custom ROMs people share on this site as well as manage preinstalled apps and utilize other apps on the play store that require a rooted device to work.
Disclaimer: Google around and visit other guides for custom ROM installation before you follow this. I may have missed something as I'm typing this up mostly from memory. Your milage may vary, and it's important to make absolutely sure that you know what you're doing so as to avoid bricking your phone.
Basically, all you need to do is:
0. Make sure you have an SD card. I don't know if it's a necessity or not, but it's useful for keeping data like music, backups, and other ROMs stored where the data doesn't need to get wiped every time you install a new ROM.
1. Find the ROM you want to use. I am currently using MoKee by Bule because I've been having battery troubles with virtually every other ROM for some unknown reason. I'd also recommend the official Xiaomi.eu international ROM if you want to continue using MIUI, or Daniel's CM 12.1. Put the downloaded zip onto your SD card. If you don't have an SD card, you'll have to find another guide to help.
3. If necessary, visit openGapps to download the google apps you need to access the play store. Some ROMs come with it, some don't. The ROM's page should tell you. Put it next to the ROM on your phone.
2. Follow this guide to install the MiFlash tool (which you won't necessarily use) which will install all the drivers you need to flash TWRP. You don't necessarily need SuperSU (I don't have it installed), especially if you don't want to mess around with a lot of apps that require a rooted device. Every ROM I've used has some form of built-in root management (though I'm by no means a professional with this stuff).
3. Boot into recovery as suggested in the guide. Go to wipe, advanced wipe and select everything except for Micro SDCard. Swipe to Wipe.
4. Go back to home, install, select storage, Micro SDCard, and find wherever you put the zip of the ROM you downloaded. Select it and Swipe to confirm Flash.
5. If necessary, repeat for the google apps zip.
6. It should take a minute or two to install. Clear cache/dalvik cache if it gives you that option and then reboot the device.
YAY, you should have a clean, functional device free from most Chinese bloatware although this depends on which ROM you install. Some are still Chinese by default but should have readily accessible English options upon startup. Sometimes you need to reboot after selecting English and finishing the startup in order for a few of the Chinese characters to switch to English for some reason. If the default keyboard is still wacky, do your best to make your way to the play store and install google keyboard or whatever other option you desire.
Hope this works!
