Transfer the wpa_supplicant file to your phone SD card.
Now copy wpa_supplicant file to /system/bin folder using root explorer (select R/W read and write)
reboot and test it!

Nice. This works on my Galaxy S2 running AndroidMeda 4.47 with an adhoc wifi hosted off my Ubuntu laptop.
Btw tapioco2000 can you tell how you got hold of this file, just to know the source a sensitive binary I am running after all that CareerIQ hooplah?
When I tried this is broke my WiFi for my device (Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0), I was able to fix it by returning the original file though.
Any reason why it didn't work ? =(
Ad-hoc support is very, very important to me in order to have my SGP functioning to my needs.

I don't know why, in my galaxy 5 it works like a charm.
do you have froyo or gingerbread?
This wpa is tested ONLY with gingerbread.

Tried it again and it worked! Not sure why it didn't the first time, but it's working smoothly. Now I can connect my Galaxy Player 5 anywhere I go... rather tedious but possible now =)
(I tether my non-smartphone to my iPod Touch via Bluetooth, then output the 3G connection through the iPod Touch's wireless as an adhoc connection)
Now just need to find a way to tether my non-smartphone to the Galaxy directly as I do with iBluever on my iPod touch.

Ibluever is a great app.
If you have an android phone (with minimum 2.2) you could try Autotether, it's similar to ibluever, but it works only with android.

Hmm i'll look into that then! It's a Samsung phone called the "Samsung Mythic" so it's not android, but it has the ability to DUN connect to both the iPod Touch and computers with a Bluetooth chip-- hopefully i'll find something at some point haha

i placed this file in the bin folder accidently deleted the original file.. i didnt realize my android version is gingerbread 2.3.6 not 2.3.5.. now my wifi doesnt even scan non adhoc networks. it just keeps scanning for networks.. my cell is galaxy Y 5360.ive tried hard reset and everything.. i dont know what to do now.. can anyone help me .. post the original wpa_supplicant for my device.. i would be thankful.. kindly help me out. as i bought my cell only yesterday n not looking forward to pay extra cash to get it fixed..

If the original file isn't working I think you have wifi problem not depending on wpa_supplicant

Just to let you know, I am desperately seeking a solution to adhoc connectivity, so I tried your supplicant file on my rooted Huawei (U8510) Ideos X3 (gingerbread 2.3.5) with high hopes...
Unfortunately - no joy (wifi scanning finds no access points and shuts itself off after a few seconds)... Any idea why please?
(I haven't "broken" anything, it was no problem to restore a backup of the wpa file... so - no panic!)
How do I go about tweaking this wpa_supplicant file myself? (I may be a n00b on this forum, but i'm a chap with 30 years in the industry.... C++, HTML, PHP, Vis. Basic etc... ALL the usual suspects )
I greatly appreciate ANY light anyone can shed on this issue (in advance)...

I'm going to assume this is the problem...
Click on your wpa_supplicant file, go to properties (I'd suggest doing this on the device itself) and enable R/W/X for the file. Make sure ALL of them are enabled. (Read, Write, Executable).

I had already tried CHMODing the file, but followed your advice anyway and recopied the file applying a CHMOD 777 (ALL), to no avail - same result as before...

If you haven't modified anything else... using the original file + allowing R/W/X should fix it 100%. I even "broke it" to where it wouldn't stay enabled for more than like 5 seconds to test it. Try editing it with ES Explorer and make sure your in the right directory as there are multiple wpa_supplicant files throughout the root of the device.

I find it is no problem to replace my original wpa_supplicant file over these modified ones, restoring my original functionality, making nearby protected hotspots visible again...
Furthermore, this file should be going to /system/bin/ I believe?
I use ES explorer (nice) but couldn't edit either the original supplicant file, nor subsequent versions on my handset.... maybe on a pc? But - what am I looking for within the file?
What to edit?

i use barnacle to connect with ipad.root necessary.
i have a US streak and im having issues getting it to tether to my HTC Aria (using wireless tether). Ive tried the original rom, the O2 1.6 and 2.1 rom. But still no luck, my laptop, and 2 friends ipods will connect through the aria, but the streak doesnt even see it.. So not sure whats going on!
I have a Sprint EVO 4G that can serve as a hot spot but haven't tried it with my Streak yet. But I plan to. I bought the Streak without activating the AT&T part. Don't need two cell phones.

the archos 5 will not tether if u are using adhoc. found out the hard way... (long time ago before the streak came out i thought i could use that and tether with my iphone and it didint work.. apparantally it doensnt support adhoc wifi. but bluetooth tethering worked fine on the archos 5

tried using wpa_supplicant file attched below- i can see and connect to ad hoc network(s), but can not establish IP --> copied to /system/bin
the apk and files below look more promising but perhaps need editing by someone who actually knows what they are doing. the app installs and runs but there is a location mismatch.

Hi Guys,
Finally figured this out.
Since the wpa_supplicant.conf file is read-only, an Android app can't modify the file. Hence, we were having to go back to connecting the APAD to the PC and use DroidExplorer to overwrite the wpa_supplicant file everytime we wanted to enable Adhoc Wifi.
I realized that when you upload a file to the APAD using DroidExplorer, it gets write permissions
And once you have the file with write permissions, an app CAN modify the file.
So, I've created a small app for easy switching between Normal and Ad-hoc wifi modes.
Here are the steps:
1. Step removed because the files were replaced (see below!)
2. Use DroidEXplorer to copy the 3 files: wpa_supplicant.conf, wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc and wpa_supplicant.conf.normal to /data/misc/wifi folder
3. Install AdhocAble.apk using any File Manager or even DroidExplorer
Now, start up adhoc wifi tethering on your phone (Barnacle Wifi Legacy on Android, JoikuSpot on Symbian, WMWifirouter on Windows Mobile, MyWi on IPhone etc.) and set the adhoc SSID to: adhocable with NO password.
Remember that you have to Turn wifi off and on everytime you switch modes.
For experts: How the app buttons work:
1. Switch to Ad-hoc Wifi Mode: Overwrite wpa_supplicant.conf with wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc
So if you want to change the adhoc SSID or give it a password, edit the wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc before copying it via Droidexplorer
2. Switch to Normal Wifi Mode: Overwrite wpa_supplicant.conf with wpa_supplicant.conf.normal
3. Backup Normal Settings: Overwrite wpa_supplicant.conf.normal with wpa_supplicant.conf
This allows you to avoid having to type the normal wifi passwords every time. But, remember not to use this button when you are in ad-hoc mode, otherwise you'll lose all your saved wifi passwords.
4. Do let us know: opens up an email compose window so that you can tell me whether you like the app or not. Do write your name, country and details of which devices and ROMs you have.
My modifications to these instructions are as follows:
Instead of the supplicant files supplied by the user above use mine
Also feel free to open "wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc" and change the SSID to whatever you want, i.e. I called mine "AndroidTether"
Also I didn't bother with any security because I'm just using the access control feature on my tethering program, I'm not sure if they all have this feature but basically, my phone tells me when someone is trying to connect and asks if I want to allow the connection before the device is assigned an IP.
1. download: "wpa_supplicant_files_WORKING.zip and unzip
1.1 Open "wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc" and edit SSID to whatever you want
2. place "wpa_supplicant.conf" , wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc & wpa_supplicant.conf.normal into the sdk's "tool" folder (where adb.exe is)
3. download "AdhocAble_apk.zip" and unzip
4. Place "AdhocAble.apk" into the sdk's "tool" folder (where adb.exe is)
5. Open the command prompt and get to the folder where your adb.exe iscd c:/where_your_sdk_is/tools
6. enter: " adb push wpa_supplicant.conf /data/misc/wifi "
7. enter: " adb push wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc /data/misc/wifi "
8. enter: enter: " adb push wpa_supplicant.conf.normal /data/misc/wifi "
9. check to see the files are there by entering " adb shell ls /data/misc/wifi "
10. install the apk, you can use my batch file to do this if you'd like here
11. unzip the file manager batch script and place it in the sdk's "tools" folder (where adb.exe is)
12. open the batch file (it should open a new cmd window)
13. select 2
14. select 1 (install an app)
15. it'll ask for the name of the apk. Enter " AdhocAble.apk " exactly, its case sensitive.
16. reboot the PDN
17. Start your cell phone tether and set the SSID to whatever you set in the .conf.adhoc file at the begining
18. Open up the AdhocAble app and select "backup your normal settings", this should save all of the remembered infrastructure network's SSIDs and passphrases
18.1 select Enable Adhoc, it will prompt you to make sure to turn your wifi connection off and back on.
19. Do so.
20. You should see your cell phone's SSID in the connection list (remember the SSID is hardcoded into the .conf.adhoc file so you have to set it to the same thing in the tether program or vice-versa.
21. If you don't see the tether connection enter it manually
To get back to infrastructure - simply open the app and select enable normal mode and turn the wifi off then back on again - after a short bit you should see the networks as usual. It might take a bit longer to obtain an IP, but it should work...if not reboot the PDN and try it again.
Another success - Flytouch2 / Eclair
What an adventure... I tried lots of different approaches to getting my 10" Flytouch2 running Eclair to my Moto Cliq the instructions in this thread formed a good basis for success. I had to make a few changes which I will describe.
First, I am using a rooted Moto Cliq (1.5 I think) running Barnacle to serve up Ad Hoc Wi-Fi. It worked great with my PC and iPad but I really wanted my Flytouch2 to have network access through the Cliq.
So far I have not yet been able to get the Flytouch2 to connect to my PC using ADB; this is a problem for another day. As such I was side loading until I realized that I could place APK's in Dropbox (great free app) and net-load?? them. I also had to get creative with Root Explorer and other file managers / editors to make the required changes
To accomplish this I did the following on my Flytouch2 (less the stuff that didn't work including a couple of bricking episodes)
- Rooted (permanent) painlessly using Z4Root
- Installed Root Explorer (essential for copying and renaming R/O system files)
- Installed TED to edit files
- Install ASTRO File Manager which is helpful for non root file manipulation activities
- Used Root Explorer to mark the /data/misc/wifi directory as R/W so files could be added/modified (the default is RO)
- Installed AdhocAble.apk which is nice but it turns out not really needed in my case
- Disabled Wi-Fi until done
- Installed the wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc (after editing - attached and below)
- Renamed old wpa_supplicant.conf file as wpa_supplicant.conf.normal)
- Replaced wpa_supplicant.conf using wpa_supplicant.conf.adhoc (basically leaving backups of each in the directory)
After doing this and enabling Wi-Fi I was able to see and connect to my Cliq running Barnacle. I am also able to connect to my standard Access Point as well without any configuration change. The only issue is that I am not running any security but I think this is not a difficult update to the .conf file. I may add a second network SSID entry with a PSK and use "Wireless Tether" on my Cliq to test. For now I am just happy to connect and Barnacle allows me to screen and block all connection requests. The primary deviation from the great instructions earlier in this thread that got me up and running was the content of the wpa_supplicant.conf file. I used part of my original file and part of the file .adhoc file from earlier in this thread.

Obviously my SSID is set to JJJ (I like J's). I got my inspiration from a file I found buried in my Android file system (attached as ...notes.txt). It is not very interesting reading but it provides lots of clues and it explains the meanings of all the parameters.
So, Ad Hoc connection is possible possible on A Flytouch2 under Eclair.
Now, my rant... it is unconscionable that this is not supported natively in Android. I would speculate that this was a conscious decision by Google resulting from pressure from the big carriers. What I don't understand is how this capability is available in the iPad!? Apple would certainly bow to external pressure (witness the iPhone) from carrier relationships. They also come with $40/mo built in service... so go figure. Now I am delighted to use both my Android Tablet and my iPad with Ad Hoc WiFi served up from my Cliq on T-Mobile!

Root could open the door for trying the WPA Supplicant fix that is floating around. That fix involves editing a couple of files. Will it work?...I'm not sure.
Also, depending on the phone, you can use the 3G hotspot hack to connect you Archos. That's how I have my 101 tethered to my X.
My phone is the motorola Backflip loaded with custom rom (preclair - j-r0dd 1.3.1) which enables routing (by dedault backflip cannot route). The problem is that bluetooth tethering crashes my phone so my only solution is wifi tethering ... I dont think 3G hotspot hack will work in my phone or no ?? I am not an expert so any help is valuable for me.

I found this App it installs just fine on my a32 with an nice Ahoc setup . I am rooted on my archos and I allow it .. starts just fine looks like it is runing and working .
However I need to try and get it to connect to a Adhoc network . So I will test it tonight from my laptop and my WM phone ...

1) Install SDE

Suddenly no wpa_supplicant was not working on mine, so you have to change configuration file wpa_supplicant.conf to get Adhoc:
1) get Rootexplorer
2) open root explorer and find /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf

The way I get my A70 to tether is as follows:
Root Android phone and flash Android 2.2 rom, which has wireless hotspot feature.
Create wireless hotspot on phone.
Tether A70 to phone wirelessly.
Never had any luck with bluetooth.

I use the 3g hotspot of my HTC Legend 2.2 with my A70, and it's working great. I just had to change the user agent of the A70's browser in the settings, not to be charged by Vodaphone (SFR in France) extra connection fees.
I have the patched source files for wpa_supplicant based on the Archos Froyo source code with the fix from (i can't spell it right now, I know they/he/she wrote Barnacle Tether). I just do not have the means to compile it yet. I can post these when I get home if someone wants to compile the module. Should show adhoc networks in the list with an asterisk. The Nook Color group is using this mod.

Works great on a A70it, latest 2.1.2 rom, rooted with Archangel.
I managed to have a thether connection with an LG GW620 running openetna and Barnacle Wifi Tether.
FYI enabling AdHoc in tiwlan.ini didn't work for me but this method of removing the tiwlan.ini worked like a charm.
Wireless Tether for rooted phones works in infrastructure mode. All you have to do to your tablet is connect. Just another option not mentioned.
The topic is about ad-hoc networks, let's try to stick to it.
Archos' firmware specifically disables ad-hoc networking, it seems enabling it back is as simple as editing a configuration file. So you need root (to have the right to edit that file) and you need to do it at every boot since the filesystem is read only.
At least that's what I've understood by looking on those threads.
Im trying write sh script to switch wpa_supplicant.conf files and turning wi-fi on/off.
How can i manualy with root right stop and start wi-fi?

It is helpful to read ALL of the messages. As you can see from his other post, his objective is wifi tethering, and he may have been under the FALSE impression that ad-hoc networking was required for it to work.

Only if the phone supports it. Some phones (like my Eris) do not do infrastructure, no matter which tethering app you try. Believe me, I've tried...

I assumed that most any phone would work in infrastructure once rooted, since that is native functionality used to connect with the phone to wireless access points. That's a bummer. Thanks for setting me straight.
In theory, at least with UrukDroid, this should be possible. I'm not home to test.

Update The program above did not work .. However There is a working FIX posted here I just tested it using wifirouter on my vx6800 WM phone and it works great my archos gen 8 a32 connects to AD-HOC and it's fast !

Here is a copy of the steps by mindsurfer he posted :
Get root access:
1) Install SDE
2) Get the initramfs from this post (download the kernel+init.zip and extract it): http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...44&postcount=1
3) Replace the zImage with the new overclocked kernel
4) Boot into SDE recovery menu and copy the initramfs.cpio.gz and zImage through USB cable
5) Boot into SDE developer OS
6) You should get all your apps here and have superuser right now
Suddenly no wpa_supplicant was not working on mine, so you have to change configuration file wpa_supplicant.conf to get Adhoc:
1) get Rootexplorer
2) open root explorer and find /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
Here is mine (second network is my normal router):

5) change rights to wpa_supplicant.conf to RW-RW-RW-
6) delete file tiwlan.ini
7) start drone and then wifi on Archos
When you restart you should repeat step 5 and step 6 and step 7.

beware, after reboot, you'll encounter problem connecting back to your normal wifi network again. There's a way to fix this by changing the permission of wpa_supplicant.conf after every reboot. This is gonna be a manual and painful process

Disable the wifi...Copy-paste the file in system/bin using root explorer... reboot the phone...done, your phone running KG1 can connect to ad-hoc networks
oops.. i just tried on KG1. Didn't connect to an adhoc network setup with WEP.
I even set the properties of the file like:-
owner: Root Group: shell along with proper file permissions.
Still no working.
Huh, god knows, maybe it depends of type of installed ROM.
Galaxy S2, Lightning ROM 2.2, rooted, exchanged downloaded wpa-supplicant with original without changing any owner properties using Root Explorer and Mount R/W and R/O option,
and - it works, after reboot, sure.
I heard that gingerbread 2.3.x does not support ad-hoc wifi but froyo 2.2.x supports it!!!!

I tested using Bzeek wifi hotspot creator on windows Vista, if you can't connect to WEP, try Bzeek, its open network but password is needed to use it
I have the LG Optimus 3D and I wanted to use my old WinMo phone as an ad-hoc server. I searched a lot and finally found the solution:
First of all you need a rooted device.
Go to Market and install "ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher". Run this program everytime you want to connect to ad-hoc.
The device acting as server needs to have its SSID to "AndroidTether" and require no password.
Don't forget to revert back to "infrastructure" mode after ending your session otherwise you won't be able to connect to normal hotspots.
There is no guarantee that this will work on all devices. Just try and see...
My phone were able to connect to sprint to and is ready to accept connections but my EVO VIEW did not detect it. I have no problem detecting my home wifi but not my TP2 using Energy rom.
Any help would be great. I have not update the rom on this View.

1. first thing is your evo view needs to be rooted.
2. need to download root explorer, paid app, or es file explorer and manually set it to have root access.
3. then u need to do a search for adhoc or wpa supplicant, which is the file u would get from the adhoc search.
4. turn off wifi.
5. go to system\bin folder and save your old wpa supplicant file. people recommend renaming it as wpa supplicant.old.
6. paste new wpa supplicant file in the system\bin folder.
7. configure permissions for new file.
8. i reset the device but i didnt see anything that said it was necessary.
for some reason the flyer/view does not have permission to connect to adhoc which is what the tp2 tether works as.

I just did it. However your View must be the correct software and hboot versions.
The Stock ROM will not see Ad-Hoc WiFi points, and the NRG ROM will force reboot if one tries to set it up that way. I gave up on changing NRG and just rooted my tablet.
BTW no need to reset the device as a last step, just stop and restart the WiFi.

This guide teaches you to reverse tether your Android phone via WiFi. That is, it allows you to use your Ethernet connection of PC on your Android phone. It is useful for those who do not have WiFi routers and data connection. So if you have unlimited data plan for your computer, why not share the connection with your phone?
I am not the developer of the files supplied
Requirements:-
1.Rooted Phone
2.Wifi enabled Laptop or PC
3.Root explorer or any other application which gives system access
4.File in the attachement
Procedure :-
Phone:
Download Wpa_supplicant.zip and extract "wpa_supplicant" from it, save it on your SD card.
Open Root Explorer, and grant it superuser access when asked for.
Navigate to system -> bin and long press on wpa_supplicant; Select copy, and paste the file into any folder on your SD card.
Now navigate to the file you downloaded, copy it in same way, and paste it back to system -> bin. Note, you might need to mount the system as R/W instead of R/O by pressing a button on the top just before pasting the file.
Reboot.
▬▬Ubuntu (Must work for other Linux Distros too)▬▬:
Open Network Connections
Goto Wireless tab, select add, and set the following:
SSID: <Any_name_you_like>
Mode: Ad hoc
Leave other things unchanged, and go to Ipv4 settings tab
Set method to Shared to other computers
Go to Wireless security tab and set Security to WEP 40/128 bit key and set key to a numeric password (or hexadecimal one).
Check the connect automatically box on top of the tabs and press Save.
Your Android phone must now detect this network, and you can establish the connection by using your security key.

Download and Install Connectify from www . connectify.me/download-lite/
Start Connectify Hotspot by giving a name and password to your hotspot and selecting the Ethernet connection to share. Make sure the security type is WEP or Open.
Disable your firewall (Simply adding it to exceptions doesn't work for AVG at least)
Now your phone should be able to see the hotspot and establish the connection using the password set.
Known Issues :
1.Random disconnections (Very less frequency)
2.Disconnections due to screen lock / sleep on laptop
3.For me Security mode does not works

I tried it ....It WORKS...may b yu wuld hav bricked your phone deleting sm files...thats y its always adviced to do a backup!

i think the problem is "wpa_supplicant" file. i moved my backup "wpa_supplicant" back to system/bin and now wifi works fine..
There is a much simpler way to reverse tether. Just search for the app in the play store. It's name is “reverse tether" it costs $4.99 but there's a trial version for testing purposes.

please read the thread before you post. That app works only on usb connection. and the op is discussing wireless tether. i don't think anybody would like to spend 5 dollars and then be physically tethered to the pc.
Also, this sites name is xda-developers, we are here to develop and find solutions. If you just wanted to buy 5 dollar apps, then why visit here?

r regenerating the binary file the wrong way so it overwritten

it happened with me too . Then i delete the file which i paste it and return the original one to let my wireless work again . Any help

Im traveling a lot an on the beginning I'm use connectify also but after a couple of updates it doesn't runner well anymore!!!!!
Then I'm switching to #Virtual Wi-Fi Router# ( to use on W7)
It runns well.
But I'm.never installed everything different on my phone???? Try it first without any change................
