Stock Gentoo on Nexus one..

I have a Nexus one, and followed the instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=631389
However, most of the page is devoted to getting the system up and running in a debian environment.
I substituted a stage3 gentoo build found here:
http://mirrors.kernel.org/gentoo/releases/arm/autobuilds/current-stage3/armv7a-unknown-linux-gnueabi/
And to my surprise, I was able to chroot into the partiton, and get it running. Besides a bunch of small annoying things, it is working. I was (and am) able to compile new packages, including the kernel.
The only issue I'm seeing is when I go to boot up off the kernel.
I started with his stock 2.6.33 kernel config, and did a "make oldconfig", resulting in the config file seen in the next post.
After having to wrangle with the kernel errors (some of the headers were just f*cking gone), I got it to compile, but when I go to boot off of it (with fastboot), the system just hangs. There are no log files, so I know the kernel didn't load right.
We need to use some very experimental parts of the kernel, as well as usertools (mesh networking over wifi), and need to use stock tools. Has anyone gotten a stock kernel to compile for the nexus one? Are there any debug tools available to check status in the event of a kernel panic? The framebuffer isn't available for the video card, so I have no way of visually checking on the progress of the kernel to see where it panics'.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks
I don't remember his name, but there is a gentoo dev that posts in these threads. Good work so far. If I run across his post I'll let you know.

Gentoo works well with any kernel. So easy way is to wait for the next kernel (android back into next linux kernel : http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/02/03/android_driver_code_deleted_from_linux_kernel/)
Furthermore, I believe ramdisk fs must be specific (explore an boot.img or read this: http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=HOWTO:_Unpack,_Edit,_and_Re-Pack_Boot_Images)
If you're not running an android kernel you're probably going to run into a lot of trouble, especially with drivers. Considering the android code isn't checked into the mainline linux kernel, this isn't very surprising.
You could make an ebuild that grabs the kernel source from android's git
and go from there. http://android.git.kernel.org/
Or you could build on your desktop and simply copy the kernel files over to the device which is what I do with the debian setup.
Jairuncloth: but the android checkout isn't linux compatible, is it? We need the standardized /dev for mesh networking...
Also, how did you get your .config to work? I'm assuming you compiled a stock kernel, yes? Have you re-done it for 2.6.33 or .34?
What is the advantage of genoo on the phone?
I considered a few distros to boot on the phone, i thought having to compile all your **** from source on the phone would be a complete nightmare, wouldn't a pre-packaged debian be much much more practical?
Advantage of compiling binaries
There are a number of reasons why pre-compiled binaries are a bit of a waste. Software hooks for software you never intend to connect, catch-all generic processor calls, non-utilization of optimization routines for specific hardware. Maybe not such a big deal on a computer, but on an embedded platform, can be extremely helpful.
And I am not going to be using this thing as a phone at all. It's going to be used as an embedded linux platform.
Are you compiling directly on the phone ?
It won't solve your problems as it is (android)kernel related but cross-compiling on a PC and archiving the built stuff with quickpkg seems to me a better solution to add stuff in the distro.
It will be pre-compiled in a way but without the bloat usually found for example in debian packages (no fanboi stuff here, just old experiences)...
Just my 2 cents...
Yes, we natively compile on the phone. You set it up (which is the hardest part), go to sleep, wake up, voila, stuff done.
The problem I would have is getting Gentoo to recognize that a package has been installed so it would maintain it...plus, once you get the compiler and libraries on there, you might as well compile it natively.
Plus, Gentoo handles all of the dependencies. revdep-rebuild is POWERFUL in that way.
HMM
IDK if anyone else has tried this but i was sitting in class and found a version of linux that is specified for the ARM processors called ARMed by slackware and idk much about this but i was just trying to share this knowledge
Slackware for ARM
http://www.armedslack.org/
Stock Linux
Problem isn't a distro for ARM....problem is getting the linux kernel up and running....
I've got the distro running inside of an android chroot. It's getting .33 or .34 kernel working right that is a PITA.

I used the android kernel for running debian. I haven't made any attempts at getting a stock kernel working.
You may have better luck with a code aurora kernel then stock. If you know what you are doing, you could port their drivers to a stock kernel. Most of that stuff is over my head. I just know the android kernel appears to work fine with debian.
Really? I need access to the SPI and i2c busses. I also need the ethernet card to be stock so we can run open802.11s on it.
I'll try it your way...
You shouldn't have any issue running Gentoo with the Cyanogen kernel or the MSM kernel off CodeAurora. Debian runs fine.
I2C works (take a look at msm-i2c) and SPI is provided as well (look at SPI_qsd). I'm not sure if the WiFi driver is going to support open802.11s but you can take a look. A "vanilla" kernel.org kernel will never work until/unless CodeAurora and the Qualcomm MSM/QSD tree hit mainline, but that doesn't matter as Android kernels are in no way "not Linux compatible" - the delta between an Android-patched kernel and a stock kernel is very small, especially as things like binder and lowmemorykiller hit mainline.
You can probably just compile the CodeAurora kernel with all of the Android options (PMEM, LowMemoryKiller, binder, adb, logger) disabled, but I don't know why you would even bother as a normal userland will run fine on an "Android kernel."
I'd also like to point out that compiling on the phone is a poor idea unless you have your compile on external storage (with the N1, I'd imagine that would mean NFS). Otherwise, you're going to end up with a very slow filesystem (many tiny files smaller than a NAND block does not do good things for flash filesystems) and worn-out flash. Personally, I'd just build a cross-toolchain and cross-compile - it'll be orders of magnitude faster and you won't have to worry about issues like NAND and heat while compiling.

[SOLVED] [Q] Screen capture from artas182x recovery?

Hi,
I'd tried screen capture from @artas182x 's 1.5.0.0 L9 recovery (bootstrap) with adb via monitor.bat, to no avail.
I'm on locked bootloader (rooted) and actually I don't know if it's possible.
Any help will be appreciated, with this or another method for screen capturing from that recovery.
Thanks in advance.
Good luck.

Hi,
I don't know if this could help you helping me, anyway,
here you go monitor.bat's info with normal boot (system reboot) -the first-
and from recovery (bootstrap) -the second-.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks a lot for reading this and trying to help me.
Cheers.
Good luck.

You'd have to mount /system first and follow http://blog.shvetsov.com/2013/02/grab-android-screenshot-to-computer-via.html?m=1
Hi all. I've solved it! . Now I can capture screens from recovery via adb in raw format and convert them to jpg with irfan view via PC.
Cheers. Good luck.

FYI: This is the script that I've modified and used. Then opened the raw files with Irfan View with the options shown in the capture and saved as jpg or any other.

Redownload the zip..may be a bad one... btw wrong place to ask mate
I just went up one level and selected reboot and everything is fine, don't know why it did not complete, what a panic phew.
