Making the story as short as possible: I wanted to install CM7, so I factory-resetted my AT&T Captivate (with Android 2.1), what caused lots of force closes on every process and market wouldn't download anything. Tried to install the most recent version of gapps available on cyanogenmod wiki, but all it did was delete the old apks without putting anything on their place. Now I don't have market, gmail, gtalk and not even the web browser. Phone is still rooted, but as soon as I open the terminal emulator it force-closes.
Before resetting the phone, I backed up everything with ROM Manager and also Titanium Backup. But I don't know what to do with these backups, since I don't have android market and can't install any app to begin recovery. What should I do?
I'll be glad to provide more details if needed, just ask me. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Just to show I've done my reading before asking: I guess I'll have to use Odin to re-flash the phone, but I'm not sure if this is the best method. I've already messed up and I don't want to make it worse, so I though I should ask before doing anything else. On the Odin tutorial I found, they used I897UCJF6 but I have no idea if this will work with my I897UCJH7. Maybe I could flash the gapps again if I found a version for Eclair (which I have searched and downloaded, but the recovery menu won't install it, just showing "installation aborted" - should I search and download other versions?). Maybe I could build the gapps zip again using the apks from Titanium Backup. I've also tried to reset and wipe the phone again, but nothing would restore the gapps.

If you can get into recovery, do a restore from their. Since you backed up using ROM Manager you will be able to restore that backup with CWM. I don't use CWM, so I'm not sure of the exact wording of the option.
Once you've restored, you should be able to then flash CM7 and gapps. You should redownload in case you had a bad download. Check the md5 if you want extra peace of mind. Also be sure that you're wiping properly and that what you're flashing is compatible with your device.
As phones vary so much, I can't offer much further assistance. It's a place to start though.

Well, I guess yesterday I was too tired to think, I just ended up panicking and couldn't think of anything to do. Luckily, thanks to your suggestion I could realize what I had to do. I'll explain for others who might have this same problem and find this topic via Google.
As I had clockworkmod installed previously, there was a folder called clockworkmod on the root of my sdcard. Inside of it, there's a zip called recovery-update.zip. Just copy it to the root of the sdcard and rename it to update.zip. Using the 3 button combo (hold volume up & down while booting), I could get to the recovery menu and chose the option to reinstall updates from sdcard, which led me to clockworkmod recovery menu. Then, I just had to choose "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard" and select the cyanogenmod_rom.zip. A couple minutes later, my phone was booting cyanogenmod, so I just had to restart it on recovery mode and redo the last steps again to install the google apps. \o/

I was in Clockwork Recovery after backing up my stock system (this is my first time) it gave me the options in green text: Reboot, reinstall update.zip, etc.
I chose reboot and everything loaded up fine and after checking in Rom Manager I have a backup of my system. I just want to know if that was the right choice. or should I have reinstalled update.zip
I guess my question revolves around update.zip.
What is that file? I know I originally used it to gain root access but do I need to reinstall it from clockwork recovery everytime before rebooting? and when should I delete it? and are there any negative consequences for not doing either?

I think you are fine. I would not worry so much, i have deleted the update.zip, but since you booted up into ClockWork Recovery you are most likely fine.
I am booted back up completely and the stock os is running and I'm still rooted. I just want to know what that option inside of clockwork recovery means. What is the reason to reinstall update.zip from clockwork recovery and what is the reason to reboot? And once I'm booted back up and running when/why do I go into my files and delete update.zip?
It's not that I'm worried...I just want to know why I'm doing what I'm doing.

I'm confused by the op, not sure how you made a backup from how it reads.
I think I made the backup by flashing into clockwork recovery from rom manager. It started with the purple text recovery mode and I hit reinstall packets. Then it went into the green text clockwork recovery....I think. I've only done it once.
So in clockwork recovery I choose the backup/restore option and then the backup option. So then the phone I assume began the backup process and displayed many lines of white text. At the very end it said something about not being able to mount my ext sd card (which) had me worried.....but then it brought up the menu again. The top option was reboot, the second was reinstall update.zip and I didn't pay attention to the rest because I was pretty sure I needed one of the first two....I just didn't know which one. I selected reboot and the phone then booted into the stock os and was still rooted. Is the fact that it wasn't able to mount my ext sd card at the end of the backup process an issue? I'm able to find a backup in rom manager. Also, if the backup process works correctly should the phone reboot by itself?
What I'm asking is what am I booting from when I choose "reboot" from clockwork recovery and what does it mean to choose "reinstall (packet?) update.zip"? I thought update.zip was what I needed to root.
This last step wasn't in your tutorial (purple text menu) so maybe something didn't go as it should have.
I'm not sure.

The update.zip in the root of the internal SD card is clockwork recovery (CR). When you install CR it does not overwrite your phone's recovery. What it does is install that update.zip in the root of the SD card. When you want to use CR, you need to "update packages" which will flash that update.zip which contains the CR package. That will load CR into memory only and still does not overwrite the original recovery on the phone. When you reboot into recovery from ROM Manager, it automatically reboots and applies the update.zip and places you into CR. If you enter recovery manually (via buttons on boot), you will need to "re-install packages" from the stock recovery to get CR.
So if you want to use CR, keep that update.zip in the root of the SD card. If you erase it, you will need to re-install it (using ROM Manager) before you can use CR instead of the stock recovery. I hope that makes sense. If not, here is the explanation straight from Koush on how it works.

The SD-EXT is not going to backup, because you do not have a partiotion on your external SD card (no need for one, like some other phones require). This is normal from what you described.
You will never use the apply update.zip option in CWR... just dont pay any mind to it.
When you select reboot system now, that is all it is.... you are basically saying "Cool, I did everything I needed to do (backup/flash a rom/wipe, etc)... and now I am ready to reboot my phone... ie, you are basically cutting your phone on.
Positive you did, but you can open rom manager, click on manage backups and you should see a file there that has a format kinda like YYYYMMDDTIME, that is the backup you made... no action needed, just an easy way to verify you made a backup of your system.

I got confused with the fact that I need to delete the update.zip file after rooting and the fact thats its there again after flashing cw and backing up.

You will lose your bootscreen during any ROM flash, plus whatever your boot script is I assume it's somewhere where it would get lost, too.
This may not work for your apps and system settings, but it's safe to try, then you'll know for sure if it'll work.
1. Go to your recovery and create a Nandroid backup of everything just the way it is.
2. Wipe Dalvik cache ONLY, do NOT Factory Reset/Wipe Data.
3. Flash GSB v2.6 and immediately after flash the GAPPs package, just like before.
4. If you had flashed the Cache2Cache script before you have to do that again as well, right after flashing the GAPPs.
5. Reboot and test everything to see if everything works to your satisfaction.
If it's doesn't then you have the Nandroid backup that you can restore. I can provide instructions that I use, and at least one other person has recently used and reported good about which uses Titanium Backup, but you'd really probably want to buy it off the market for it to be easier to do Batch backups and Restores (choose Menu/Batch from TB's main screen).
1. First, make sure the option is checked in TB's preferences to "Force to same location". FYI I do NOT use the checkbox for "Migrate system data". At THIS time (you can change it later), I suggest changing the Compression method to No Compression. This'll make sense in step 6.
2. From Menu/Batch, choose "Backup all user apps + system data".
3. Boot into recovery, do a COMPLETE wipe (Factory Reset/Data/Dalvik cache), flash your ROM and then your GAPPs (it's recommended at this time to NOT flash C2C just yet).
4. Reboot, SKIP setup of your Google account, go into Preferences/CyanogenMod settings/Application and check the box for "Allow application moving". I also change "Install location" to External, but that's up to you; this is just what works for me.
5. Boot back into recovery and flash C2C and reboot the ROM again.
6. Use File Manager, which comes with GSB and navigate to the TitaniumBackup folder (not TitaniumBackup-system). Find the Titanium Backup apk app installer file and reinstall it from here.
7. In TB, under Menu/Batch, choose "Restore all apps with data".
After this is done, reboot. If this works for you and you want to do this again in the future, you can make a copy of the Titanium Backup apk file to some other folder, that way you can re-enable compression in TB's preferences for future backups. I recommend LZ0.
I've been using this second method for the last 3-4 new versions of GSB, don't know how it would work with such a big jump in versions. If neither of these work for you, let me know if you still need help.
You will lose your bootanimation and any scripts you have but your apps will be fine. Like WRT said above just make sure you do a nandroid back up in recovery then wipe cache only. Once that's done flash 2.6 and gapps. Enjoy!

Awesome. I had done a nandroid and ti backup to prepare, but I never saw the option in ti for force same location. I know how to backup and reinstall my lockscreen sounds and bootani, so I've got that down. Now that I look there's a 2.7 release which integrates the sdcard speed fix, so I won't need my init script now

I don't have any backups so I want to install ROM MANAGER from market, I read HERE that if i want to upgrade I need to go go back to stock (I'm really don't know how this version get to the phone and somehow the ROM MANAGER not there...)

This says it all, but since you are a noob
by wipe, he means to wipe everything (data(factory reset), cache, delvik cache(thats on the advanced options)
As for the titanium backup if you dont know how to use it, just youtube it or go over the threads here
Finally when doing the flash, make sure the trigger 3.2 file is on the sd card
And NO you dont have to go back to stock
1. Do all this without using the Rom Manager?!?!?!? - If I want to install it just download & Install, no any pre-requisit ?

Someone told me that my current ClockWorldMod Recovery is old and I should upgrade it... (I couldn't find in the net \ this forum how to upgrade my current version...).
Someone told me:
1. download from market
2. install it with ROOT
3. click "Flash Clockwork Recovery" and boot to recovery
4. Re-install Packages - I DON'T HAVE THIS OPTION NOW
and from there like in your guide: backup,make all the Wipe, place rom on sd and choose "install zip from sd card"

You have the red voodoo recovery. You do not need anything else. Ignore Rom Manager and all that, you really do not need it, because your ROM replaced this recovery with the stock one. You are good.

After you flash the rom, let it just sit for about 10 minutes, then reboot, don't mess with the phone.
5. Restore = Restore what?Your apps if you backed them up... restore your launcher, contacts if you dont use google.. whatever you want to restore, just not system apps (green system apps like wifi and bookmarks should be okay though, exception to the rule for 2.2 > 2.2)

1. Install the ROM with a SIM card in...or if you didn't, insert it like it asks you to.
2. ROM Manager IS clockwork recovery. It is that menu you went into to flash the rom (can be green or red depending on your kernel installed). You don't need ROM Manager because whoever had the phone before you already installed ROM Manager at some point and hence, you have the Clockwork Recovery now as you saw.
3. After you install the new ROM, the boot up will take a long time. It is setting up all the system and configuring the operating system. After it finally boots, leave your phone for 10 minutes and just don't touch it. This gives it time to do a lot of configuration stuff it needs to do when it first starts up. After the 10 minutes are up, restart it. It will now start a lot quicker (like normal) and when its up, you can use it anyway you want. Hence, some first things to do would be to restore your contacts, programs (if you backed them up, settings, etc)
3. I really recommend you read a little bit more before you do flashing like this next time because if people here are not nice and don't lead you by the nose (or if you follow a step wrong), you can **** your phone. The procedure is easy. It is fairly foolproof but it is still advised that you have basic knowledge of what you are doing.
There are a lot of sticky threads on the forums that explain what things are. I recommend you have a look.

OMG!!!!!! Just follow the instructions! It's not rocket science; geez. I know of most noobs who wouldn't even ask this many questions even AFTER the guide/tutorial/step-by-step instructions are in front of them. I give you my word that you WILL NOT brick your Vibrant just by trial and error.

I don't understand why you are so set on the CWR upgrading.... and just an FYI, the red recovery (.3) is a higher version than via Rom Manager (.2).
Be happy. Move on to something else now that YOUR PHONE IS FINE

It's hopeless. You guys saved me on the bootstrap issue, but I couldn't help myself. I had to try to mod again. I CANNOT install any ROM with any form of loader or manager. So I download Cm7.1, copy it to a folder which I have designated use for all of my recovery files and is visible by recovery(Android recovery that it). When I go to open the ROM it initializes the boot but aborts because the "signature" isn't valid, or something to that effect. I've tried Clockworkmod recovery, which I can't even find when the time comes(its a blank folder now instead of bringing me into the program), and I've bought the Bootstrap Loader form market, none of which create something I can recall in Recovery. I don't mind spending money on apps, in fact I enjoy giving back, but I think maybe its time to cut my loses with this and just stay rooted and happy with my Gingerbread. Any Idea's?

First problem I see is you're using the Android recovery, instead of ClockWorkMod recovery, which is why you're getting the "signature invalid" error.
Second issue (maybe) is if you are extracting the CM7 zip (or any other roms) vs copying the zip file directly to your phone. Furthermore, when you're installing a ROM through BSR, you are not going to use the "apply sdcard:update.zip" option, you need to select "choose zip from sdcard"
Third issue is you cannot use *any* time of manager (ROM manager or otherwise) with the DX2. Unfortunately our bastard of a phone won't use anything except the System Recovery specifically formatted for it. I would suggest SBF'ing back to 2.3.4 and following c21johnson's system recovery guide to a T. If you're trying to install CM7, all you'll need to do at this point is copy the zip to your external SD card (and I would suggest redownloading the ROM at this point, just to be safe) and follow the install guide. Again, you *cannot* use Android's Recovery to install any ROM, you must use BSR. After you install CM7 (if it's successful ) you'll need to install the cm7 recovery included in the cm7 thread. If you're wishing to install nitro's 2.xx eclipse you'll need to SBF to 2.3.4 and upgrade to 2.3.5 using this guide.

So I download Cm7.1, copy it to a folder which I have designated use for all of my recovery files and is visible by recovery(Android recovery that it). When I go to open the ROM it initializes the boot but aborts because the "signature" isn't valid, or something to that effect. I've tried Clockworkmod recovery, which I can't even find when the time comes(its a blank folder now instead of bringing me into the program), and I've bought the Bootstrap Loader form market, none of which create something I can recall in Recovery. I don't mind spending money on apps, in fact I enjoy giving back, but I think maybe its time to cut my loses with this and just stay rooted and happy with my Gingerbread. Any Idea's?

As for CM7, I would recommend finding the CM7DX2 post in the Development section and follow the guide I wrote for the original post (OP).
For SBF, rooting, and making a nandroid backup, follow each of the posts in my signature.

Did you download all the files from A Droid X2 forum? If you use any other files meant for other devices, nothing will work. For the DX2, you need the bootstrap recovery and the CM7 specifically for the DX2. When you get the bootstrap recovery, it comes as a .apk file. Just place it on your phone and install it like a normal app. Once installed, you will see it in your app drawer labeled "system recovery." To get into it, open the app, select the first button "Install Recovery" and hit ok when it tells you install was successful. Then select the second button "Recovery Mode." Your phone will reboot in a few seconds and put you into recovery mode. Once there do what was mentioned above and install zip from SD card. Navigate to where your CM7 zip file is and install.
It is always recommended to wipe data and cache before flashing which can be done in bootstrap recovery. Also a good thing to do is to backup all your apps with Titanium Backup from the market.

Sorry about that, I must have been excited. Unfortunately I spoke too soon. Either that or I'm not meant for this, which I hope is not the case seeing that I'm getting my degree in IT. I finally get bootloader, with ROM and GAPPS placed accordingly(I opted for Eclipse). When the zip is finished uploading and I see confirmation that all was installed correctly, I begin the reboot......and it takes new to an unactivated Droid X2. I've created nandroid after nandroid, with different methods and different ROMS, and I either land there or with a signature error, even in bootstrap. I'm gonna try one more time before I hang up my guns. Maybe.....
you should be able to activate
running eclipse
with my D2G, I got the activation screen, sometimes after flashing roms
and just activated
edit: why are you creating nandroids?
you don't need to keep making more, unless you have new data you want to save and then data is only good for that rom

Thanks for the input everyone, and I've actually succeeded this time....really. Its turns out that I had to change some of the permissions of the zip before I tried to flash. Lucky me....now some sleep
I have rooted my Nook Tablet at around Christmas, but am thinking about switching the root to CM7. Do I have to go back to factory setting and remove the old root or will CM7 root over the old root method?

Okay.
First things first. Read this thread
Now, I'll clear it up here, but you should really read that thread as well. You do not "change root." The fact that your tablet is rooted simply means that on your current version of Android (the stock B&N version by the sound of it) you have root access. Newer "root methods" simply have made it easier to attain root access.
What you now want to do, by indicating that you want cm7, is install a custom rom. This means you will be completely overwriting the stock B&N OS. You will have root access with this rom as most custom roms come with the ability to have root access to the file system.
The steps you should take are:
1. Find and download the cm7 zip file (I think the link may be broken in the rom's thread. Have a look around for it. Make sure you do not download any cm7 zip files for the Nook Color). You'll also want to find and download the cm7 gapps files if you want the play store and other google apps.
2. Download indirect's app to flash recovery, install it and flash clockworkmod recovery.
3. Boot into clockworkmod recovery and make a backup.
4. Seriously make a backup.
5. Did you make a backup? Cause you should have.
6. Select "install from zip" and find the cm7 zip file you downloaded. Do this again for the gapps zip file.
7. Wipe data/factory reset.
8. Reboot system and you'll be booting into cm7. The stock B&N OS will be gone.
If you don't like it, simply boot into clockworkmod recovery again and restore the backup you made (you made a backup right?).
Finally, please read the thread I linked. You should have a firm understanding of everything it says before you tinker with this stuff.
Thanks for the quick and detailed response. I've read your linked post and I'll look into how to back up my Nook Tablet and research a bit more before attempting this.
Currently, I'm rooted (fastboot style) but have had a several problems after turning on the Nook. Occasionally, when I turn on the Nook and get the launcher choice menu, the menu is rapidly flashing and I'm unable to make a choice and must reboot. This is why I'm thinking about starting over with a different root method. Other than the occasional startup problems it works fine.
