Stuck in recovery mode....Please Help. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a Epic Touch that a bought from ebay and it was bricked when I bought it. I was hoping to unbrick it but I have had no luck. It will boot up and show the Galaxy screen(No triangle by the way) and then automatically go into the android system recovery mode. At this point I can move the vol buttons up and down but cannot select any options. Below it states:
"Deleting Cryption Meta Data
--Copying media files...
E:install_application_for_customer:Can't unmount
/preload
copy application failed
-- Applying Multi-CSC...
Successfully applied multi-CSC
I'm thinking that the original owner may have flashed the incorrect radio/rom perhaps. But here is the kicker, I can get into download mode just fine but I can't get any of my PC's to see it no matter what. I've did all the drivers installing and uninstalling with no luck. I hear from many that I may need USB jig. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

It's a link to the correct forum. This is the I9100 forum. If you're struggling at this level, I have no idea how you expected to be able to unbrick a phone.
There's even a thread there describing the same problem, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1316191

Yes, you're still posting here instead of there. However, since there's no answer there, in the correct place, I don't fancy your chances.

Oh I see! I see this a lot from users in this forum and frankly you could have kept all the smart remarks but they probably helped you get your jollies off so your welcome. LMAO! I've been programming phones and have helped many on this site for quite some time so don't let the post count fool you. Just curious and please don't take offense to this but what did you get out of your responses or did they result in solving any kind of issue? Mods you can delete this one! Hilarious!

Did you read the General Sticky? I tried very hard to make that as clear as possible. Just download the file, rename it, put it not in a folder in sdcard/ and then go to stock recovery (with your phone off, press and hold both volume keys, press and hold power, release power at the Vibrant screen while still holding both volume keys) then click on apply update, reboot phone and you are rooted.

He was just very patient and answered all my questions, and he's a very trustworthy guy. I bricked my phone about a month ago and have linux and couldn't use odin plus i was still a noob so seeing as my options were buy a new phone or say **** it and send it to him i sent my phone to him and he fixed it, added froyo and shipped it back. Plus he taught me a lot now i kno how to do a LOT now and no longer consider myself a "noob".
Thegreat520 should be a mod on here as he is by far the most helpful person i've ever come across online.

LOL I Thought the EXACT Same thing, because that sounds very fishy. Considering the time it took to ship there and back... like a week to 12 days at the very least? He must of had access to a STABLE version of Froyo before everyone else here on the board.
Yeah, to be clear I'm not trying to say anything negative. People helping people is ALWAYS a goo thing.

My recovery sucks and doesn't allow me to install anything. Anyway to change it?

God I wish rom manager was hidden in the market for our phones
No CWM right? Hmm, cant you just ODIN a different kernel and then have CWM? Are you rooted? Try the Mobile Odin app, put a differnt kernel on the root of your SD card and try flashing that way.
Or perhaps the worst case scenario is you have to ODIN back to stock to wipe the damages that Rom Manager did.
I hate Rom Manager so much...

You were pointed in the right direction. You were told to read the stickies, which you SHOULD have done before posting in the first place.
You clearly did NOT do this, because, without you even stating what you did, it was obvious to at least three people who read your post what you did wrong, despite the stickies having instructions to NOT DO WHAT YOU DID in the DAMNED THREAD TITLE.
Edit: Oh yeah, and one of the posts here gives you a damn good hint too...
I'm not new to XDA. I couldn't find exactly what I needed to find and was lost. Didn't know which stickies to look at and where. Whatever, its my fault, you're right, but it doesn't give anyone a reason to be harsh to me. This is a Q&A and i asked one. You didn't have to respond. I guess you guys find some joy in giving snide remarks to those who are lost.

Actually, we'd find much more joy in people just reading the stickies, posting to an existing relevant thread and doing a search before posting. But yeah, we do like our snide remarks, too.
Believe me, I dont find any joy in having to respond to 40+ reported posts on the same OP/thread and then having to close them or move them.
I do find joy in reading humorous, snide and condescending comments though. Those can be really clever sometimes.

Seriously - there's a total of only 13 stickies over 3 I777 subforums.
One of them is marked as a FAQ. You should always read FAQs.
One of them says in the thread title, in capital letters, NOT TO DO SOMETHING. Based on your description of the issue, it is clear to all of us THAT YOU DID IT ANYWAY.
And despite blatant multiple hints (no we're not going to hold your hand and spoonfeed you when you are going to be this lazy or dense), you still haven't figured it out.
Yes, Red, thanks for occasionally leaving a thread open so we can vent.
Actually... wait... I looked more closely at your picture... You didn't use ROM Manager (which often causes the problems you've described) - you're still on stock recovery!
The concept that someone could still be using stock recovery and not understand that stock recovery won't work for anything but wiping... well, seriously, that's so incomprehensible that we'd assumed that at the very least, you'd ****ed up by using ROM Manager to get to CWM recovery.
Edit: That said, the answer to your question IS in the FAQ. Of the only 13 stickies here, at the VERY LEAST you should have read the FAQ. Seriously, FAQ posts are there for a damn good reason.

[Q] Installing Clockwork Mode Recovery

Hello,
I am rather new at all this stuff, but after searching for dfferent tutorials, I am trying to install ClockWorkMod Recovery on my ATT Galaxy S 2 based on the instructions below:

The problem I am having is on
Step 5. Untar codeworkx's kernel into the Heimdall directory.
When I do this, it gives me an error saying the firmware.xml is missing from the package.,
I was wondering if anyone knew the reason and a work aaround.
Thank you

To Coreym and others who thought this thread should be closed due to the "have been covered in Sticky" and Mod Red.
Firstly, I personally do not think this question has been covered in Sticky.
The OP asking about how to install CwM Recovery onto his phone retaining stock kernels, NOT custom kernel. Yes, I did ask the question and creepy has provided answer b4. Yes, ramos did ask the same question and got the answer, I'm sure there were one or two more in the room. Yes, it has been answered but NOT covered in the Sticky.
Secondly, I don't believe the OP should get any flame because he did do the search and did his homework, he just ran into some errors, that's why he asked for help. This is way different than others who not even do homework, haven't even tried on their system, but just asked for direction.
I believe in this case, the OP did do his best and asked for help, that's why I provided a suggestion to him, rather than flame.

Also maybe I read it wrong but it looks like he's trying to install CWM using codeworkx kernel.. which is a custom kernel, not stock. Even the instructions in the link he provided go back to installing a custom kernel.
Okay I just went back and don't see ANYWHERE where the OP is trying to install CWM while retaining stock kernel.. I guess I must be blind

I have searched this forum extensively..but I haven't found the answer.

I think thats in the binary yellow triangle thread or the other CWM thread... both linked from the sticky.
Red5 whats the deal with this thread? I was under the impression that this was already covered. After getting my post quoted and being told that the OP was trying to install CWM with his existing kernel, I went back and read the OP and followed his link. It seems to me that he is just trying to install CWM like we all have, using codeworkx kernel and not his existing kernel.
If that is the case, I guess I don't know why this thread hasn't been closed. Seems a little confusing to me (and probably others) as to what threads are allowed to stay and which ones aren't ... if we are talking about multiple threads with the same topic (installing CWM)..?
Not questioning your authority, just would like a little clarification.

Well, there was a decent conversation going on, until someone had to crap on it. Threads that just ask "how to install this?"are shut down because 99% is covered in the stickys or are linked in the stickys.
This thread had a decent conversation and I was waiting to make sure the user got the info he needed and was successful. Its called helping out. Once that takes place, the thread can be closed because there is no longer any need for any more discussion.
Its not beneficial to just automatically close every thread that pops up in the General or Q&A section. Even Devs started out as noobs at one point, so we need to be somewhat courteous in the offchance that the next noob might turn out to be a great dev in the future. The OP didnt seem like your ordinary noob that just wanted to be spoonfed, so I gave him the benefit of a doubt and left this open.

There was no sarcasm, that was the reason why. I gave you an honest answer. I dont think every thread should be closed and as I said, this thread had a decent conversation in it. With that, I took a look at the sticky and realized that I can modify it to better point out the issue that the OP had. Had I just closed the thread I never would have stumbled onto that.
Again, there was no sarcasm in my comment. I just wanted to help out a newer member and left this open for him.
lol.. you can honestly say that you weren't being sarcastic when you told me "its called helping out"
..normally anytime you put "it's called.." in front of ANYTHING other than a question asking what something is, it's being sarcastic.. just sayin.

[Q] Random freezes on all roms

A few weeks from now my phone just randomly froze and the only thing worked was to restart the device by holding the powerbutton for a long time. I thought that it was just some random freeze but the freezes have been getting worse and worse. Now it freezes almost twice a day for no apparent reason (like in the lockscreen, on the web, in the sms app, in the settings etc etc). Yesterday when I woke up the phone was showing the "Samsung SIII" logo, I guess it had crashed in the night and tried to reboot (?) but got stuck on the logo at the start. My rom would not even start. Took out the battery etc etc but it did not start. Reflashed another rom and the same thing happened today too. Have tried to wipe all data etc and tried 3 different roms and kernels, including the stock kerner but still random freezes. What could be the problem, how should I troubleshoot it? Really annoying as it have been working fine forever until it started to act crazy. Also tried without any playstore apps but still random freezes sometime.

How hard would it to be to actually explain it or actually link to the thread instead?
From your sig "Hit Thanks if I deserve it" - actually no, this time you do not deserve it. You could just have written what it meant. Lmgtfy is so old school.
Use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.vinagre.android.emmc_check
It'll check the chip and you know is it "SDS" straight away. If says "Insane" you're screwed

Thanks! Yeah it the insane chip. Is there any fix beside sending it in and repairing it? Did not samsung release a software fix? What does that fix address? Is it just a preventive measure or does it actually fix anything? I am also rooted and on a custom rom, do I have to reset everything before handing it in? And if yes how do I factory reset it and reset the flash counter?

You have no clue about my profession, education or anything regarding me, do not judge people.

You seem to have no clue as to the rules and just want to be spoon-fed judged by your posts .
Thats all we can judge you by the fact that you have not searched and not even bothered to read the basic faqs and guides .

1. If you'd follow a kind advice from Glebun, making your homework properly, you'd never asked basic question related with it.
2. Education, profession, or anything else is related with the FACT that you're a lazy noob unable to search given link and to find answers by yourself.
Oh, sorry: your profession, based on your behavior here, straightly cannot be related with anything requiring self direction, initiative and motivation.
Finally, your stupid request to copy and paste for your use the clues of the very long thread is a pure example of absolute selfish, demanding and ignorant kiddo, who can face serious problems with that position as soon as he will leave nursery.
Seems that there may be some confusion over who is and who are NOT the Mods here. I suggest that everyone in this thread throttle it back a bit and try to help out instead of a snarky response.
Yes Rule #1 is to Search, but Rule #2.5 is to be courteous to your fellow members.
I'll post it here just in case you missed it.
2.5 Courtesy towards other Members: Treat new members the way you would like to have been treated when you were a new member. When dealing with any member, provide them with guidance, advice and instruction when you can and always with respect and courtesy. Never post in a demanding, argumentative, disrespectful or self-righteous manner.

Thread Closed as OP got his answer.
I do suggest though that you read up a bit more on this affliction, so as your next thread is not fraught with the same issues as this one.

You can't. I see you have created 3 threads on that issue on different forums, so I think a mod can delete this thread if you want. And I think this should be only on the q/a forum so a mod should merge the thread from general thread into the one you have on q/a.

oh ok i see thanks a lot :highfive:
second page already and no help for the guy?
Yeah dude wrong forum, your bad on that. But in the spirit of trying to fix a problem then add to it, i would advise that you go here and read the op and all instructions word for word and see if maybe the answer to getting you back up and going is in there. I suspect that this is the place to get the fix if the fix is something you can actually get.
A bit of advice. If you ain't made it you don't post it here. If there is a Question in the OP of your new thread then chances are you should be in the Q&A forum. Mistakes are honest and thats cool. This thread will be deleted or moved to Q&A by a mod and you will be able to live this horrible mistake down.
More advice unrealted to the location of the posting but more in regards to the content of the post.
Your bricked, ok well then goodluck. Oh wait you wanted help? I got ya, i was confused and thought you were just telling me about your bad day. See What people need to be able to help you is.... Details, over abundant details that are key to getting your stuff worked out.
Are you cdma? or gsm? I assume cdma cause your in the wrong section yet its still a cdma section.
What rom were you on?
What hboot number?
What was the last thing that you did right before you discovered your problem? If it was "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3" then stop posting throw the phone away and start anew with the next device. cause ye be burnt.
Details Details Details, if you think that it may be a random tidbit that's totally unrelated then make sure you include that in your DETAILS.
Tell us what instructions/thread you were following in your attempt to relock.
What steps worked and what didnt?
Hell tell us some other stuff it could be helpful in helping people help you.
Hope you can get it fixed, if not look for a broken screen device on ebay and do a board swap. Just make sure its got a good esn before you buy it.
And in addition, for all who posted in this thread, we all know that he made a mistake by posting in the wrong sections, but at least attempt to get him to not have to keep posting all over the place desperate for some help, by actually helping the guy. He said hes bricked. Well its got some function to it still so why did none of the people who posted to flame the guy actually take the 10 seconds to hit your browser back button and right click copy link on the UNBRICK thread then return here and post the link? Seriously guys show some sympathy and help your fellow forum goers out. This is a community of some some very very bright individuals and some not as brite or sorta dim newbs that are trying to learn things. Learning and discovering is the basis of the whole xda forums. Its really not that hard to just post a link and send dude another step into the right direction than to post one after another about how hes should have not been here asking for help. We all know that a mod will delete this crap anyways so why the hell not just post a helpful link or some sensible advice and move on with your day?
Come on we can do better than that.

Well I would attempt to get your pc fix fixed or use a buddys with a live cd or load up the needed files and stuff onto a usb flash drive and go to your local walmart or bestbuy or whatever and do some sneaky stuff and get on there demo pcs and wreck some sh*t. I used to get a kick outtta rooting display models at bestbuy and installing CM to them. Ya know for fun.
i've replied on the thread you posted in the q & a section. please reply so I can help you.

Hey OP this is the guy who can get you fixed up. I've been around the 3d dev section every day of my life for the last 2 years and he is one who honestly knows his stuff. Get on the offer while its standing. I got alot on my plate and I'm more instruction follower than instruction giver but I will look up your other posts a little later and see if I may be able to lend some help. Good luck I hope it works out for the best.
Next time you sell a rooted phone just flash an ruu or the equivalent and smile at the buyer. If they know about root and what it is they will be happy its rooted if they dont know then they will probably never find out cause they aint gonna be pulling no complex key combos to boot the bootloader to see your root/soff unlock/lock status.
