The Quest for CWM on the Player 4 & 5 - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

I am not the dev to get this done.
hell i am not even a dev. i never could get it running on Ubuntu to start learning out to create stuff.
so.. here is a starting point for those who want to get CWM running.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are a 100 different methods of flashing a device with CWM, and being that this is a new device it will take some time and a good dev to get it going.
but since this is a samsung device and the groundwork on the SG I and SGII has already been laid, i think roms and CWM are only a short time away.
I imagine the SG II CWM methods would be our best starting point.
i figured i would start a thread for anyone who wants to post their progress in getting CWM flashed.
if you have any testing methods please post them.
need someone to test. just ask.. but please have a viable recovery method available to that user incase it bricks the player.
Needed
- Stock flashable Recovery
- Stock flashable Rom (incase the entire phone goes belly up)
i guess since there is no true recovery rom for the Player 5 we need a full Rom w/ recovery to reflash, or the stock recovery to reflash the device incase the device gets bricked when attempting to get a working CWM.
Known Recovery Methods
How to enter Samsung Stock Recovery mode
-Hold Home, Vol +, and Power all at the same time.
-When the Samsung logo appears let go of Power.
-Use Vol + and - for moving up and down the menu
-Hit the Home button to enter on an item. (or click ok)
How to enter Download Mode (for flashing odin files)
-Hold Home, Vol - and Power at the same time.
-When samsung Logo appears let go of Power
-to exit download mode hold Power until it powers off. (its about 5 seconds)
ADB Methods
(performed via CLI using adb while your phone is running and hooked to a PC)
Reboot - adb reboot
Reboot into Recovery (stock or soon CWM) - adb reboot recovery
Reboot into download mode (for odin flashing) - adb reboot download
Odin Flashing Tool (used when your phone is in download mode)
Here is a link to Odin 1.3
I use 1.3 because its probably the most widely used.
there is a 1.8x but i dont know of a change log to show a reason why we should use it.
short on time, will clean it up and add more soon.

Got it!!!

haha gotta love modders !
but thats not something for most people. thats a rare little device that only certain people can even make.
(i could probably make them by the dozens if someone where to pay.
but if you are not stuck in a bootloop or unbootable state as the jig is used for
never forget too that there is always adb
adb reboot
adb reboot recovery
adb reboot download

Well adb dont work on soft brick.
I made two of them. Saved my but a few times.
They sell em 10 bucks a pop
But at any rate.
Its better to have a jig and not need it than to need a jig and not have it.

oh i know the jig is perfect for that cat who killed the phone by odin flashing cwm. (i warned him but he did it anyways)
i was just stating that its not something that everyone can do, most wont have soldering irons.
but it is a must have for dev's i believe.

ha! i was waiting for the "priceless" comment at the end of your post.
but again i have to point out that this wont help that dude who flashes cwm with odin since he has nothing but a black screen.
but as long as you can get to the Sammy logo your ok.
If your phone screen is always black, that is it does not display the white Galaxy S/Samsung/AT&T logo when you switch it on, then sorry, this jig will not help you.

OR... you can simply purchase three(3) 100Kohm resistors from radio shack, twist them together, and fish around in the USB port until you hit pins 4 and 5 (on the top and bottom on the same side of the usb port)... It's really that simple. Tape them up so you dont make contact with your skin and throw off the ohm reading.

I'm working on this.. This is all that's left
2: use market app Terminal Emulator and run the following commands on the device
Code:
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p16 of=/mnt/sdcard/data.rfs
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p15 of=/mnt/sdcard/cache.rfs
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p10 of=/mnt/sdcard/efs.rfs
Another native method for those of you with Mac or Linux... With windows you use putty. Get market app SSHDroid then SSH in to your device and copy-paste the code block in.
3: copy the files "data.rfs", "cache.rfs" and "efs.rfs" from your SDCard. put them onto your computer and compress them to save space. They will compress down quite a bit.
4. host them somewhere they can be deleted... a personal mediafire account or PM me for access to my server.
I can make an Odin3 1-Click back-to-stock from there.

nvm
10 character

I got a flashable md5 file for odin if anyone is still needing it. Go to my thread.

Great guide. Question. I did exactly what you listed twice but there's noticeable choppiness in ics on the home screens and transitions compared to gb. Power saving mode isn't on. I've read through every post regarding the leak and everyone says its smooth while I'm getting the opposite with the homescreens. Any suggestions.

If you're going to write a guide for n00b's, it's best not to leave out links or expect people to always know what you are referring to. For example, you tell them to download the correct USB files, but don't provide a link (however, this link is provided in the next link). Also, you state "Download the one click Odin file," but the link you provide says nothing about a one-click Odin file. I know what you mean, but you can't expect every "n00b" to understand. Anyway, just some advice to make your guide better and more idiot-proof.

How To: Root, Clockwork, Unlock, Roms

Ok I decided to post this because out of all of the phones I have rooted and flashed this had to be the most confusing... to many different options, and scattered all over the place.
I know some people are against making things easy for people but thats just not me and doesn't make any sense at all.
So here was my working method.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK
ROOT download I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL.7z from here credit goes to Entropy512
How to Use:
Download the 7 zip package. Extract the contents of the zip file to a directory on your hard disk drive.
Start the Odin3 One-Click Downloader program by double clicking on "I777UCKH7 OCD No BL.exe" or "I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL.exe".
Now Enter Download Mode:
With the phone powered off, plug in the usb cable while holding the vol up + vol down buttons (but not the power button).
When the warning screen appears, press Volume up to continue into download mode.
In Odin, the small edit box in the upper left corner will turn yellow, and say something like [0:COM8]. The number could be different.
Click Start. Watch the progress bar advance in green while the message box in the lower area describes the steps. When the flash is finished, the top left larger edit box will turn green and say PASS! and your phone will automatically reboot.
Unplug the usb cable from you phone after it boots up. Success.
OPTIONAL Unlock If you would like to unlock your phone for other gsm carriers. I have tested this on T-Mobile and it works. Once you are rooted and verified you have super user. Make sure you have busybox if not download it from the market. Also make sure you have a micro sd card installed.
Go to market and search for "Galaxy S Unlock", the author is "Helroz".
Run the app from step 2. Go to "Unlock SGSII" tab on the top of the screen.
Tap on the first item:"Step 1 Backup files...."
Tap on the second item:"Step 2 Change lock-bytes", and wait until your phone restarts.
Bingo, your phone is sim unlocked after the reboot.
Flash Clockwork
NOTE THIS METHOD WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY BY INCREASING THE PHONES FLASH COUNTER HOWEVER YOU CAN RESET IT USING THE NEXT STEP
You will need to download yet a different odin you can get that here
Download the attached Siyah rom since it is the only tar file I could find and odin only accepts tar files. This will flash a new kernal and clockworkmod. I attached this because it seems the link is dead.
How to use:
Start Odin
Now Enter Download Mode:
With the phone powered off, plug in the usb cable while holding the vol up + vol down buttons (but not the power button).
When the warning screen appears, press Volume up to continue into download mode.
In Odin, the small edit box in the upper left corner will turn yellow, and say something like [0:COM8]. The number could be different.
Click the PDA button and browse to the Siyah Rom
Click Start. Watch the progress bar advance in green while the message box in the lower area describes the steps. When the flash is finished, the top left larger edit box will turn green and say PASS! and your phone will automatically reboot.
Unplug the usb cable from you phone after it boots up. Success.
Reset Flash Counter and remove warning triangle
I read that you need to be on an ICS rom for this to work. After flashing CWM I flashed F1 rom.
Download this apk TriangleAway v1.70 you can get that here
I have tested this and it does work, when I tested this my flash counter was at 3 now it shows Custom Binary Download: NO... also no more gti9100 with yellow triangle.
You should now be able to boot into clockworkmod recovery and be able to flash zip roms from your phone like normal "or like any other phone you have had that has had cwm installed".
DO ANY OF THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK
I DON'T TAKE CREDIT FOR ANY OF THIS... JUST WANTED TO GET THAT OUT THERE This is just for anyone else who may be confused with the amount of links and scattered content just to root and get cwm installed.
bowenac,
Thank for creating the guide and for your willingness to help newbies. I wanted to mention, however, that there are some very important things newbie readers of this thread need to be aware of. The most important warning is that, from my understanding, following this rooting procedure will increase the flash counter in our phones. I am still very much a noob here but from what I have read our phones have a counter that is increased whenever you flash non-custom binaries into our phones. When increased, the counter will result in a yellow "warning" triangle showing up on your screen every time you boot the phone. An increased flash counter might also result in warranty service being denied.
There are ways of rooting and flashing that will NOT increase the counter, and a guide for that procedure is available in the forum. In fact, a number of step-by-step guides for rooting the SGS2 already exist. creepyncrawly, an extremely knowledgeable user here (in fact, I believe the one-click downloaders you used in your post were prepared by him), write a guide to flash custom binaries on your phone without increasing the counter. He also includes several of these guides in his signature... you can see it in his profile:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=2916435
More info is available in the stickies:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1511999
When i first arrived here these guides were extremely useful to help me learn everything I needed to learn to root my phone and understand what I was doing. I see the attractiveness of a "one click solution", but I, for one, would much rather understand exactly what I am doing to my phone before I do anything to it. I was an extreme noob when I got here when it comes to Android, but tehguides were a great reference, and also pointed me out those things where I needed to read more to understand what I was doing.
Really?
I had absolutely no trouble finding what I needed on here. The search button is there for a reason. The first day I had my s2 I used creepy guide and had no problems whatsoever. This phone is waaaayyy easy to flash, just like my old Samsung was. Don't expect to find everything in 5 minutes, it takes some time to get it right man.
Haha, you guys should lay off the OP, he's obviously done his research and accomplished the "simple" stuff. Some of this can be fine tuned to a particular case. I used this tutorial and it was easy, easier than sifting through the other stuff. Spoon fed or not, some people don't have the time to dig deep and learn every dam thing about it. MEAT AND POTATOES, GENTS.
If you all want to make hard tutorials, be my guest, if you have the time. As for most adults, this stuff is merely hobby/entertainment. If you make money doing this stuff then shut the F up and rake it in, otherwise can it and move on to the next tutorial.
ONWARD OP, ONWARD!

I guess my keep clean was a little VAGUE. Stop posting your opinions on easy development. The op has taken the time to make a nice and easy tutorial. And 90% of the posters here harass and give their opinions on what xda should do and etc etc... it just goes on and on. If this helps ONE person accomplish anything and not brick their phone then it served its purpose to help. If all the opinionaters would put their thumbs to work HELPING the community (by answering questions or writing guides etc) it would make this site a much better place. Because I have news for you all... new people will be here EVERYDAY not knowing what to read or where to fund it... once you except it and help or ignore it, your xda experience will be much better... now knock off all the negative crap and help your fellow human beings...

i dont know how to get to recovery without going thru the the cwm app. the only instructions i can find are for people with a dedicated home button
Don't worry about incrementing the flash counter if you are planning on upgrading to at least android 4.0.x. chain fire has created an appavailable from the play store that can reset your flash counter back to 0 if you are rooted and running at least ics. It works awesome and is well worth paying for.

Hey, thanks for the help as I am a little confused also. I have a few questions.
I am on stock gb 2.3.6 uckk6
1- will I lose all my data after flashing "I777UCKH7 OCD No BL.exe" or "I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL.exe".?
I can't use tbackup yet as I am not rooted. Do I just do the backup after I flash and before the unlock?

Uh, there is no CWM app? If you're using one, get rid of it and stop using it!
Hold all three buttons (vol up, down, and power) until you see CWM recovery (it'll show the Samsung Galaxy S2 boot screen twice then go into recovery, you can let go when you see it the second time).

Getting closer to Rooting the tmobile galxy NOTE

SO i found out how to manually get into Stock recovery on the t mobile version of the galaxy note.
1) While the phone is on just hold down Volume Down + power button for 10-12 second
2) When you feel a light vibration release the power button while still holding down button, and then just hold volume up button as well
( both volume up and down at same time) hold until it show manual mode.
once her it give me the same stock recovery options.
apply update through external sd
apply update through cache
and some other options i don't remember
" what i did"
i tried to flash Superuser binaries by pressing apply update through external sd. It seemed like it was about to go through then it said error invalid signature. When i tried to reboot the screen went completely black and my heart stopped. SOOOOOOO i waited a minute and then just held the power button and it booted up again "PHEWWWWWW"
Just wanted to share my experience as it seems there are alot of people trying to find more info.
Maybe this will help someone get closer to cracking the puzzle
I should be sleeping, since I need to be up in 4 hours for work, but I can't sleep because it's too friggin hot.
Did you have it connected to a comp when you tried this? It should force it into download mode then instead of going to recovery. Theoretically, then it would be a matter of using Odin to push custom recovery and SU.
Unfortunately, it's too damn hot to even fire up my computer, or I would be working on this right now. Well, if nobody has managed to get it by morning, I'll try to work on it while at work.

If it is the torrent one it did not have superuser permissions. I couldn't even use titanium backup.

Get into recovery and flash this file in recovery, i got it from roto, here is his post on how to do it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30081450&postcount=34
comfirmed root!
i can confirm that if you have nandroided rotohammers tmobile dump then all you have to do is download the root superuser file and put it somewhere in your sdcard and manually go back to cwm (powering off device and pressing power vol up and vol down once you feel the phone vibrate let go of the power button but keep holding vol up and vol down until you see the cwm screen) then find the file you downloaded earlier flash and once done reboot the phone. "walla" your rooted on att galaxy note with a full Tmobile stock rom.
I can confirm that the TMo Note is easily rooted, almost the exact same way as the ATT version.
These steps all assume you have rooted before and have ODIN installed on your computer. If you have never rooted and don't know what ODIN is, you will need to read up on both before attempting anything or risk bricking your phone. I, or any other member of XDA, am not responsible if you brick your device. Attempt at your own risk.
Step 1: Download Clockwork Recovery tar file found here, select ODIN at top of post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431
Step 2: Download SU binaries (attached in this post)
Step 3: Open ODIN
Step 4: Connect usb to phone and computer
Step 5: Boot phone into download mode by pressing VOL DOWN+ POWER until phone goes blank and phone vibrates, then release POWER and hold VOL DOWN + VOL UP at same time. Once in download mode, select UP.
Step 6: In ODIN, select PDA and locate the recovery file. Then select Start.
When finished, close ODIN and copy the SU binary zip to the root directory of your internal phone storage.
Reboot into recovery by disconnecting phone from USB and following Step 5 above.
Install SU zip through CWR, you are now rooted. Reboot and update SU binary from app.
I know this can all be found elsewhere, I just wanted to place it in this thread for convenience

Yes, the USB cable does the trick. Found that out by accident myself after I didn't need to use Odin any more.

The at&t phone is put into recovery with the volume and power buttons, but the t-mobile phone needs the usb cable plugged in also to enter recovery.

No, you still need ODIN to install recovery for the rooting process. For that, you have to be in download mode on the phone, not recovery, and you can only get to download mode with the USB cable attached. I think my instructions in my earlier post may have confused some people. I'll have to clean it up later.

I've flashed CM9 & CM10 ROMS and none work. So hang tight on the stock ROM right now. Freeze all the crap with Titanium Backup. Its working well for me so far.
OK, Now that I got rooted, and got wifi tethering working....next step is to wait for a dev to make a rom for t-mobile.

Speaking from personal experience on two separate accounts of having to deal with the unauthorized software. If you wait for about a minute or so, the phone will shut off or you can pull the battery. Hold the volume down and home buttons together. While pressing and holding those two buttons together, press and hold the power button until the phone turns on and when you see the Samsung Galaxy Note II logo, release the power key. At this point, your phone should enter into downloading mode.
Use ODIN3 v3.07 to flash both of these files together. Also make sure that the Auto Reboot option is checked.
You'll need to download and open this file http://d-h.st/mKu in the PIT section of ODIN.
You'll also need to download and open this file http://d-h.st/Qd4 in the PDA section of ODIN.
Within seconds of flashing the two files at the same time, your phone will reboot and start up like normal.

Also, in order to flash a custom recovery, make sure you are both rooted AND unlocked. There is a very easy to follow guide in the development section by Adam Outler, who developed a pretty much automated system to do so.

Hey buddy, glad you were able to help him out. Wanted to give you a little advice. It's usually considered bad form to just link the download. Most devs prefer you to link their thread, you know so the person can click Thanks or donate if they feel inclined to. I'm not sure if that's how Adam is, but wanted to point it out to you.

OK, followed Adam's instructions. I'm sure phone is rooted and unlocked.
Now, holding down 'Volum - and Home, then holding down Start' does not work.
I've tried it over and over again.
Any help appreciated.

[Q] Bricked my GT-I9300 w/ TWRP... - Help, please!

Just tried to install TWRP (Touch) from the wrong forum on top of my existing recovery, I guess (not really sure what I did; was watching NFL simultaneously.. DANG!). And now my phone won't get past the boot screen anymore...
My International Galaxy SIII is (was) unlocked and rooted; running the U.K. (O2) version of Android 4.1.2.
Retracing my steps, it seems like I tried to install the US/Verizon recovery image of TWRP on my i9300 by mistake. When I downloaded the image from GooManager, it offered to install the image right upon completion. And thinking that I was in the correct XDA-Dev Forum section, I confirmed... Bad Mistake. (Yes... I know, I'm an idiot...).
FWIW, I've been 'messing' with my Smartphones + multiple Tablets for 6+ years now, but I never managed to brick anything thus far. Bad 1st time, as I am about to move back to Europe (from the US).
Phone does not show on Laptop (under drives/devices) anymore. I do know about ADB and some basic commands (..enough to install ROMs, boot into Recovery, Bootloader etc.), but what can I do if I don't even get passed the boot screen? What's the command I need, and how can that get me back on track? -- Tried to shut down, use "the usual" power button/volume button combinations; even pulled SD card storage and SIM (as I had read that suggestion in the i-9000 Forum)... No dice.
I would kinda stink, but if I have to wipe my phone to make it work again, so be it... I have ROM Manager backups stored on my external SD card.
-- Any help & suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Armin
P.S.: Since I wanted to get rid of ClockworkMod, I did not take a Nandroid BU first...of course
not sure and I guess someone more qualified might be better able to help, but can you get into Download mode and re-flash correct recovery via Odin?
I'll try that first thing tomorrow morning... Thanks for your suggestion!

YES! Was able to get into 'Download Mode'... What now? I'm not sure if simply flashing the correct recovery will do the trick...will it? Well, then again.. it can't get worse, can it?!
I'll give that a try via Odin. Stay tuned!

AWESOME... That did the trick!!!
Here's a quick step-by-step for getting your phone back to life via Download mode (my modest contribution to the community):
1. Pull battery
2. Put battery back in and go into download mode right away (pressing POWER + Volume DOWN + HOME button)
3. Confirm that you want to continue (Volume UP)
4. Connect phone to your PC
5. Download .tar file of whatever you want/need to flash
6. Fire up Odin
7. Leave all Odin settings as they are.. don't check/uncheck anything (!!).
8. Click "PDA" button and select .tar file with app or ROM you want to flash
9. Press "Start"... and -after a quick, automatic reboot of your phone- you should be back in business... [yay!]
Thanks, guys!
Great that it worked!
