I am going to buy the 32 gb Prime (with keyboard) and have been researching memory card options. I am leaning towards the following:
1. Lexar High Speed microsd 32gb Class 10 (for the device)
2. Sandisk Extreme SDHC 32gb class 10 (for the docking station)
I will use this to watch movies, play music, surf the web, take notes, use apps, and play emulators.
My only concern is I've heard the class 10's have trouble with speeds on smaller files/apps/programs. Will that be an issue? Or will these two cards be a good setup?
Pretty much everything will be "slow" on working with smaller files / programs due to file system overhead.
Doesn't matter if it's a class 2/4/10/1,000.

with smaller files (a few data blocks in size) you have as many writes to the file system management space as you do data block writes.
with large files there are much fewer writes proportionately which is why large files have higher throughput.

I went with a 32gb class 10 pny micro sd from newegg. It was 47.99 and I finally tested it last week. Wrote video/music files at 11.5-12mb/sec. Some of the other class 10s had reviews claiming they only wrote at class 4 speeds. I can't stand how slow my class 4 16gb in my phone us...

You might want to give this a read.
I'd also suggest getting SD cards from a source with a good exchange policy. The speeds can fluctuate wildly within a class and even from idenetical cards from the same manufacturer.
So, what ever cards you get, test them and if not-acceptable, exchange them.
I stated this in the "Ultimate Accessory" thread. But I'm going to say it here to.
Don't buy the Patriot MicroSD 32GB Class 10. It's awful and I'm not the only one stating this. It used to be $100+ (I bought it when it first came out), but now it's like $40 because people realized how crappy they are. Speed throughput was never the problem, but they randomly corrupt and when it DOES happen, it's bad. Mine corrupted on me 3 times in only a few months. Each time I was lucky to have had a backup (Ti Media Sync) and managed to save just about everything. The first time I lost a lot of pictures that hadn't backed up yet.
Anyway, the corruption doesn't come from using USB or anything. Everytime mine randomly corrupted, I was using it away from a computer or charger. First time I was watching a video off the card (admittedly porn) and the second time I was taking a picture. Third time I don't know because the phone was in my pocket in standby and when I pulled my phone out to show someone a pic from the phone it wasn't there, along with the rest of the stuff that was on the SD. Oh, and the first time this happened was on my Nexus One, not my Sensation.
Anyway, I replaced it with the Samsung 32GB Class 10 (bought it for just over $80) and it's been rock solid so far (2 months in). Speeds are pretty much identical to the Patriots. I use "Boot Manager" and dual boot a couple different ROMs off it, and they all fly.
Just wanted to give you guys a heads up.
I went "cheap" on a class 4 Transcend 32GB for both my photon and my upcoming Transformer Prime.
In actual copies, I was seeing in the 6-7 MB range so I won't complain.
I purchased the ADATA 32GB Class 10 from NewEgg and it works wonderfully. I haven't done any testing beyond copying 4GB of video files to it, which copied at a rock solid 17MB/s! I'm impressed needless to say.

Could you run a crystalmark benchmark on your card(s).
If the transcend random 4k R/W speeds are decent, that may be the ticket for me.

My wife's xmas gift of a new camera is getting a SanDisk 32gb class 10 "extreme" (SDSDRX3-032G-A21) that I plan on running crystalmark tests on next week.
I might even hold off getting a micro sd until 64gb cards drop closer to $100 ... (e.g SDSDQY-064G-A11A might be killer at ~$100)

I was also wondering this. Will there be any difference in watching a video file (1080p) between class 4 or 10?
Large video files will be skewed towards the sequential mode -- which tested @ 20MB per second. That's 160Mbits / second.
In theory, this class 4 card could playback a maximum bit-rate blu-ray iso without a problem. Blu-ray maximum bit rate is 48 Mbits (or 6 MBytes) / second.

Unless you are recording HD video to the SD card, class 10 is a BIG waste of money. The class only refers to the write speed, NOT the read speed. If you are just loading videos or music onto the SD card, then even class 2 will be fine. It may take you longer to load the original files to the card, but it is NOT going to be slower in reading the data compared to class 10.
These class ratings are really needed for HD video camcorders and high FPS (frame per second) cameras that demand high bit rate & speeds. I use a 6 for 720p video on my nikon dslr and for 4-6 fps 14 megapixel shots, but class 2/4 for my phone/tablets where it is just used to store movies, songs, pictures, etc...
I just picked up 2 Samsung class 10 32gb Sd cards from fry for $35 a piece. I think it was a wise decision and will help me out in the future. I know it's overkill but I think for that price it was worth it. So now my Prime will have 96gb of storage when I hook up my dock. That is truly overkill as well, but who knows when I might need all of it lol.
After a huge thread I read here about classes, I changed my mind and went with a class 4 for the Prime (was thinking I mist get a class 10). I picked a Transcend 32gb class 4 off of Amazon for $33 delivered.

So I ended up ordered a 32gb micro SD card off amazon without realizing the class until yesterday and it was too late to ship it. So I come here asking should this be okay for my TF?
I know the speeds will be slow but if that's all it is I can deal with it. My main concern is I have a lot of 720p & 1080p videos and I don't want them to lag. Will there be any lag when using this card, or should I just go ahead and return it?

That class doesnt have anything to do with read speed, only write speed. So a class two *should* be slower to write videos to it than a class four but read wise both should be much faster. Of course the actual speeds can vary by maker.
So, yes, a class two will be fine for playing HD video.
I've been using good quality (Sandisk) microSD cards Android devices for a long time now and *never* had an issue with them.
Remember the following:
1. The class of an SD card doesn't tell you how fast it is - it only really tells you how slow it isn't!
2. It only tells you the minimum sustained write speed in optimal conditions (i.e. unfragmented), and nothing about read speeds at all.
3. Good quality lower "class" cards can often exceed the class minimums for higher classes anyway. For example, I've several 16gb Class 2 Sandisk microSDs and in my testing can regularly achieve write speeds of 7MB/s with all of them.

There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding Class speeds on microSD cards.
I've watched a 1080p high profile MKV with a video bitrate of 9500kbps on my Galaxy SII on a Class 2 card, no problems.

A class 4 is considered plenty for smart phones and similar electronics. Though our phone, as most newer phones, can take up to a class 10. Higher the class - the better the transfer speeds.
Class 10 is supposed to have a minimum of 10mbps and a high of 22mbps. In general the class numerous indicates minimum transfer speed. The better the brand, the better the sustained read/write speeds. Though class speed does not mean it will not go over the high end of it's transfer rate. Some class 6's (6mbps min transfer speed) have topped out around 30mbps. Again, the better the brand, in general, the better the 'past minimum' speed performance.
Though class 10 cards are a bit more expensive, and not obviously practical, unless you were getting it for having the OS run on it, like cm7 , but even then, as most people don't have their cm7 running on a class 10 sdcard and no one is complaining about slow performance.
I'd recommend putting the money towards a lower class 64gb card. As long as you format it with fat32, and ideally 32bit sectors, the phone will recognize it, giving you a stupid amount of available storage.

Another time class 10 cards can make a difference is if you take a lot of photos and video and save them directly to the external SD card. Especially if you are taking HD video.
I use a Class 6 and it works great.
I noticed a much faster upload speed to the car compared to a Class 4 and 2 so there is some truth to the Classes.
You know, you can also use SD-Booster app to change the cache your card is set at. To test, open your gallery and watch how it loads the pics. The app will show you what the cache is currently at. Then use SD Booster and change the cache. Go back and look at your gallery. I have a class 2 16gb but have the cache at 3072. Works great!

Although 99.999999999999999% of the MicroSD Cards which are 32GB are Class 2, I noted that the 16GB which Verizon stocked in the Rezound is a Class 4. I suspect that means we should go no lower than Class 4.
Anyone know of a good and legitimate 32GB SD card which is Class 4 or even better? I note that Class 6 and Class 10 all tend to be brands I have never heard of (other than 1 by PNY).

Yeah, the only real difference is the transfer time. If you're swapping a lot of data on a daily basis (like copies of your BluRay movies), then a higher class rating makes it go faster, but doesn't have any other effect on the performance of the phone, to my knowledge.

JD, there's a thread elsewhere on xda that talks about card speeds and basically recommends that the sweet spot is a 32g class 4 card. I have 3 of 'em (all bought at various sales just under $40). One is in my Rezound; one is in my tablet, and one is kept synced to the one in my phone via Microsoft Synctoy....because all cards ultimately fail.
i was reading somehwere that this may affect the speed of how videos write to the card if you save to card..is that true?
i'm gonna get a 32 gig as well, but should i go for class 4 or 6?

Yeah that 64 GB is a class 6. It's part of Sandisk's new mobile ultra cards. They make em in all sizes I believe.

That's a valid concern. I don't know the bitrate at which the camera records the various formats that it is capable of, but I'd say that a Class 4 is a safe bet in any case.
For a smartphone doing HD recording you want "atleast" a 4. Anything slower might get stuck in swapping. Personally I think it's one of those things with go with what you can afford/feel comfortable with. Though I'm also using a class 10 16GB since I can't stand being bogged down on transfers. I mean honestly, it's an LTE phone, not an HD camera. I don't need a 32gb, I stream everything.
Play back is a different story, a class 2 32gb works fine as long as the app does proper buffering. Though it will always load faster with a faster SD card.

The Amaze can handle a class 10 memory card. This would be preferred as it has the fastest read and write speed that I know of. I am currently using a 16GB class 6 SanDisk and it works really well.

My Amaze is on it's way to my door this Wednesday, and I too am on the hunt for a good class 10 micro SD card. I had a Patriot 32 GB ordered from Amazon (it had 4+ stars), but then I started reading specific user ratings. It almost looks as though there is a problem with quality/consistency with many of the 32GB class 10s. The Patriot, and several others, had quite a few recent users complain that their class 10 doesn't run any faster then their old class 2 or 4. (The complaints I tried to focused on are from users who had run speed tests and didn't just provide seat-of-the-pants analysis.) Admittedly, I was going for as cheap as I could (the Patriot was only $47), but I looked at several others and they had spotty speed comments as well.
Does anyone have specific knowledge or insight on this? Is it an issue with lower cost manufacturers whereby one card is great but the next can be dreadful. Is it the nature of the beast?
I appreciate your comments.

I could understand saying a class 10 isn't necessary, but to say it isn't the way to go, a class 4 is best doesn't make sense. Care to explain why?
UHS-1 Cards
I just read where UHS-1 class microSD's "were made for mobile devices". Something about being specifically designed to work with those operating systems. Anyone have experience with any of those? They're awfully expensive.
If you uses a class 2 SD card with a capacity of less than 16Gb and mostly uses it to transfer small files between your phone and PC - that would be sufficiency enough.
If you intend to use a bigger card, say, 32Gb or 64Gb and you are doing a lot of transferring MP3, movies, pictures ect ... especially if moving BIG files, say, more than 1 Gb each (e.g a full MP4 movie may take up to almost 2Gb)
OR
You are frequently backup your SDCard contains and moving them between PC and phone. You will appreciates the higher speed/class of your SDCard. Higher class means higher speed in reading and writting hence saving you a lot of time.
You will not notice much differences between a class 2 and a class 10 card when using it inside your phone though.
An SDCard speeding test's result will be differ from devices and that's exactly manufacturer's stated on their package/info, but, basically you got what you paid for. As we all know, Sandisk is the most expensive card out there and there is a reason for it, just do a little research and you'll know why. Sandisk classed their card at the minimum speed that their cards are capable of, whereas other manufacturer tend to class their card at the average speed that their cards capable of. Meaning a classs 10 Samsung/PNY/Patriot card may not capable of reaching the claimed speed (because, well, results are varies on devices) and the result maybe a little lower than claimed (I've tried Samsung class 10 and PNY class 10 test and the result is somewhere more or less than 9Gb/s writting).
Anyway, a class 2 16Gb Sandisk card is good enough for an average user whereas a higher class/capacity card will increase performances for those who demand more for their task/hobbies/usage
I would agree with the post above, right on the spot. I had a 8 gb class 4, 16 gb class 4, and now 32gb class 10. Did not visibly notice speed in my phone but did notice it when transferring files. You will only benefit when transferring larger files like 1 gb or more.
I only transfer my recorded videos, pictures, mp3 and that's it. I think i once transferred a movie or two.
What would have taken me 1 hr on 16 gb class 4 took me 20 - 30 min on my patriot 32 gb class 10. No problems on it since nov so far.

I have a class 4 card and the video is choppy when using HD recording. It can't write the larger amount of data fast enough.

anything over class 4 sacrafices random read/write speeds...meaning, just to write faster the data is more fragmented. Over time, the speed becomes slower and the table used to keep track of data must access parts of the fragments that are free...this reduces performance in higher class cards...if you look at Sandisk they their class two performs way above the minimum write speed, almost double...I always buy sandisk...nothing else...their quality is unmatched...they are the pioneers...A class 4 or class 6 sandisk would outperform many of the class 10's that people are buying right now.
Sometimes as Binary's card has, they lose integrity because of this reason...the index becomes messed up and the data becomes lost eaiser in higher class SD cards and lower quality SD cards...I believe Sandisk tries to minimize this even in their higher speed cards...

If you guys take a look at the bitrate of the 1080p video and also add the audio bit rate it doesn't even come close to being 2 MB/s write speed which is a class 2 SD card...the highest bitrate for video I got was 11182 (kilobits per second) = 1.36499023 megabytes per second...add the 127kbps of sound and you barely have 1.4 MB/s write speed needed for the HD video recorded by our amaze...hope this clears things up.

I also have a 32gb class 4 (SanDisk). I haven't noticed any lag when picture taking or video recording.
I was looking up what kind of MicroSD to get my Amaze about a month ago and decided to get this one. Here are some things I picked up while doing the research.
1. Small read/writes usually takes place on the SD cards. Getting a class 10 with good write speeds for large files doesn't mean good speeds with small files.
2. SanDisk is a good brand. Mine is advertised as a class 4 but performs at class 6.
3. If you're looking at the Patriot class 10 microSD, I recommend that you stay away from it. People have been reporting errors with that card on Android devices. Patriot said that they've fixed the issue, but there are still a lot of bad cards floating around. You never know what you get.
4. If you do go with SanDisk, get it from a reputable dealer (not eBay). There are tons of SanDisk counterfeits.

I just got a patriot 16gb class 10 about a week or two ago from newegg for $10 ($20 with a $10 rebate) and it's awesome. I mostly notice it when transferring files (videos and music) between my phone and laptop. I had a 16gb class 6 ADATA before this one, but it was only 12gb cuz I originally used it with my G1 and had it partitioned.
My wifi downloads have been quicker lately, but I'm sure that's just coincidence. Anyways, good luck!

Higher classes are more prone to errors. With the bitrate phone records hd. A class 2 is way more than enough. Go with a class 4 SanDisk. Higher classes have better sequential good for recording movies etc. Lower classes have better random read right and less prone to long term damage. The higher class you go the more risk you'll have of getting corrupt data etc. The only benefit of higher class is better sequential write speeds. ALWAYS GO with sandisk

If I had known this sooner, I wouldn't have invested in a 32GB Class 10 disk (not sandisk). So far, I've had it crash twice, and had to reformat every time. It's rather annoying and you do lose all your data; so for those out there still considering it, please add this to your factors of consideration.
16 GB class 6 SanDisk. No lag. No problems.

Always buy sandisk. I have not heard of any sandisk going bad but heard of all other brands going corrupt over and over. I don't believe sandisk has a class 10 or class 8. They always stick to stability and quality and is worth the price. Besides a class 4 sandisk usually outperforms a class 6 or 8 of other brands. Search for my posts regarding memory topics in accessories I talk about sequential read write and random read write and how the bit rate our phone records video in HD is waaaay below even a class 2. a good balance of sequential read write (long files such as videos or movies) and random read write (gigs of small files) is either a class 4 or class 6 if i was going to go allout I would get the new 64gig card made by sandisk for mobile phones. I think its a class 6

I had to send my 32gb class 10 Sandisk in to get replaced because of data corrpution. I agree though, Sandisk is great.
I have a Samsung class 2 8gb. Pretty good for waht I use it

I have SanDisk 16GB Class 2, I bought a class 10 and its actually slower than my Class 2. Plus yes, it's more prone to error. My previous android phone would freeze up because of the class 10. Moral of story: SanDisk has great speeds even on class 2

sandisk doesn't make class 10's or 8's, but It could be imported or something or maybe even a knockoff...the only way to make sure you have a sandisk is to call them and ask if they actually sell class 10, to my knoweldge the fastest microsd they sell is a class 6. can you point me to their webiste or somewhere, I am very interested. they do sell class 10 SD but not micro sd. I am very curious where you got this and how sandisk is actually replacing this...I have looked all over for a class 10 micro sd.

don't forget to increase your read ahead cache for the sd interface too. 2048K should be the optimal size.
