[TUT] Easy root and cwr for generic 4.0.2.A.0.42 rom [+OC kernel] - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

EDIT!!!:
As this post was written on the 9th of December 2011, now it becamed outdated.
At that time, this was the easieset way for root, DMCR, CWR.
Now there are easier ways to root your device.
There are newer roms, kernels that already contains the DMCR and CWR.
I do not have time to update the OP.
So please keep this in mind while you read this topic!
25.01.2012.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As there are some people, who likes to use the original factory rom, not the cooked ones, I decided to put together a brief tutorial on how to get most out of these roms (only basic steps!).
Important: All below mentioned are valid only for the devices with unlocked bootloader and running the Generic Central Europe ST18i (Ray) 4.0.2.A.0.42 (Android 2.3.4). It may work with others as well, but I haven't tested.
Disclaimer: In case that you follow this tutorial, I do not take any responsability for damaging, bricking your devices. You are doing everything at your own responsability!
With all these thingies that I collected, you'll have a rooted device, capable of dual way call recording, having the cwm recovery and freed from bloatware.
First of all make sure you have all the necessary drivers installed on your PC!
What we need:
- the Generic Central Europe ST18i (Ray) 4.0.2.A.0.42 generic factory ROM (Thanks to Jozinek and SE): Download link
- Flashtool (thanks to Androxyde): Download link
- rooting kernel (thanks to DooMLoRD): Download link
- patched factory kernel that enables the dual mode recording (thanks to skvalex): Download link
- CWM recovery install software, (SE Extreme Tweak Installer, thanks to quangnhut123): Download link
How2:
1. In case that you do not have the 4.0.2.A.0.42 rom on your device, flash it with Flashtool.
2. Boot your device, make the basic settings (language, wifi, gmail, so on...). Make sure you allow USB debugging mode in Settings/Applications/Development and to allow Unknown sources as well.
3. Switch off your device.
4. Switch it on in fastboot mode (pres and hold vol up while you connect to the usb). The BLUE led should light.
5. Flash the rooting kernel.
6. Reboot your device, check you should have superuser installed (your wifi doesn't work now, it is normal).
7. Switch off your device.
8. Switch it on in fastboot mode (pres and hold vol up while you connect to the usb). The BLUE led should light.
9. Flash the patched factory kernel that enables the dual mode recording.
10.Reboot your device, update superuser and # if needed (your wifi should be working now).
Congrats, now you have a rooted stock rom having the dual mode call recording enabled.
In order to enjoy this function, you'll need a recording software that uses this method, like: Download link
In case that you want cwm recovery as well, follow these steps:
11. Connect your switched on device, to your PC.
12. Run the SE_Extreme_Tweak_Installer and from its option window, select "CWM For Xperia Neo/ARC/ARC-S/Play/Pro/Ray", than press install. Wait till finishes.
13. In case that "Auto Reboot" was ticked, the device will reboot, otherway reboot manually your device.
Now you have CWM recovery installed as well. To use it, you should press and hold the VOL down button when you see the "SonyEriccson" logo while booting the device.
And of course now, in addition, you can get rid of the bloatware (list of junkies that can be safely removed from the device, the links are for ARC devices, but can be applied to RAY as well): Here or Here
The rooting procedure and the cwm recmode installation can be done in a lot of different ways as well. In my oppinion, this way, as explained above, is the easiest one(till now...).
UPDATE: Here is a very well optimized OC kernel with dual mode call recording (thanks to aire)
That's it. Good luck!
Hope you'll enjoy it.
If you like the tut, just hit the Thanks button!

Is doomlord's kernel necessary for the next steps? If not, isn't it much easier using the zegrush exploit?

Well, as I've mentioned : " The rooting procedure and the cwm recmode installation can be done in a lot of different ways..."
If you follow my tutorial you'll succeed 100%.
And of course there are other solutions that work 100% as well.
It is up to you to decide whichone will you follow

Yeah I've read that, so it isn't necessary to use Doomlords kernel in order tu use the patched kernel and CWM?
Also, is there a way to combine the dual mode recording kernel with this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1322610 ?

Yes if your rom is flashable with ClockworkMod recovery, and of course is for our phone.

In case that the custom rom you want to use is flashable through cwr method, than the answer is yes (these roms are in .zip format).

I try to find the detail about this kernel, end up is in 4pda which all in Russia.
Is this the latest kernel from aire? I saw it got at least 5 or 6 update for the kernel.
The other thing which is more interesting is in 4pda, they have this ROM REPACK4PDA, which I can't download as well.

Added aire's latest kernel to the OP. Thank you aire!
About the REPACK4PDA rom: As its name says it's for 4pda...I suppose...
The rom itself is great (made by aire), it's what I use (slightly modified by me) and I'm 100% satisfied with it.
Alhough I do not speak Russian, as I've understood from their homepage, they are preparing to release the rom on xda as well. So, patiance (it will be a nice rom), or try to download it from their site.

Hey seatone,
Installed the kernel from OP. Phone works smoother now. I tried to find the downloadlink for the repack4pda rom, but failed. The place where the link is, remains blank. Guess I'd have to register at 4pda to get it. Could you tell me what the major differences compared to a rooted and bloatware removed stock SE rom with batterymod and transparent status bar (as i have now) are?
Thanks,

What do you mean? Do you mean you want a kernel to base a rom on? If so, then yes you can use those kernels, but just make sure the kernel is for a rom specifically for the device the kernel is for.

Your device needs to be rooted to flash a new kernel/rom. Is your device rooted?
yes it is rooted
according to this post,
"Porting an other device's rom
Well, that part is easy
- extract the system.img
- extract boot.img
- replace boot.img-kernel with the one from your stock Hero rom one.
- rebuild boot.img
- build update.zip package (look someone's hero custom rom to see how to do it)
- sign and flash
It should run place and make calls but probably won't have Wifi, BT, trackball support."
It is reallly easy ?
Thanks
For Kernel Manager (the first link in post #2), you also need to have busybox installed.

It depends on how much experience you have in these things. To me it looks pretty easy but you may find it more difficult. I don't know if you have experience in this so I cannot say if it is really that easy for you.

Read what they say. Like if you want to make your device faster, then get an overclockable kernel. If you want to conserve battery life, then get one that says undervolt. If you want more freedom, then get on with many options. (It's all based on your preference). Me, I would choose one with the most freedom so that I can change setting (cpu speed, etc.) whenever I want. Also look for the latest version (if you want to have the most recently updated one). If you still can't make up your mind, then choose based on user reviews.
thanks
so all are compatibles ok ?
and how extract the kernel ?
promised after I stop
you can just flash them using an recovery menu, or use an app for this.
I dont know if rom manager could do the job, try it
thanks for all your answers

All kernels you see in the app should be compatible since they are supposed to be device specific but still check to see if it says the name of your device beside the kernel.

Likely to be a bad flash. Just reflash the kernel. If this doesn't fix your problem, then reflash your rom.

[DEV] Fixing FXP/CM ROM | 2011.11.09 | 3G/Wi-Fi

Do not spam this thread with stupid posts!
Detailed instructions on how to flash FXP/CM ROM.
You must be on FXP/CM or stock ROM. Download FXP/CM ROM and kernel. If you have FXP ROM, just open X10FlashTool.exe. But if you have CM ROM, download my attached bundle and copy it to FlashTool firmwares directory, then open FlashTool. Now select Flash option and select FXP/CM kernel. Turn off your phone. Hold back button and connect USB to phone. Press OK. If no errors thrown continue, else retry. Copy update.zip to SD card and reboot to CWM. For FXP, press touchscreen on logo. For CM, press back button on logo. In CWM select "wipe data/factory reset". After that select "install zip from sdcard". Then "choose zip from sdcard". Now locate FXP/CM zip and select "Yes". Reboot and enjoy!

Ultimate LED FIX for Xperia ICS (4.1.B.0.587):SMS,Missed Call, etc, everything working

Ultimate Notification LED fix for Xperia (ICS 4.0.4, 4.1.B.0.587)
Introduction
One of the most annoying bugs in the everyday use of Sony's official ICS firmware version 4.1.B.0.431 (and later, including v4.1.B.0.587) is that the notification LED only works for missed calls, and it doesn't notify anything else anymore.
Ironically, the previous beta firmware ICS 4.0.3 v4.1.A.0.562 showed a specular bug: the notification LED didn't notify missed calls, but it was working for everything else (SMS, Email, ..).
The "Ultimate Notification LED fix"
I've got around fixing this bug by reversing and doing a minor change in a 4.1.B.0.587 framework file (services.[o]dex).
The patched file has the notification LED working for everything as it was in GB firmware: the LED now blinks for missed calls, sms, emails, and any other application showing LED notifications (eg: K9-mail, Whatsapp..).
This patch works on all Xperia devices with 4.1.B.0.587 firmware, and it has been tested initially tested on a Xperia Mini Pro sk17i.
Disclaimer
These files come with no warranty, express or implied.
By downloading and using files linked in this page you express your understanding that you use those files at your sole risk.
No one can be held responsible for any damage directly on indirectly related to files linked in this page.
If you flash something to your phone you must remember that there's always a minimal chance that something goes wrong: you know it, I can't be held responsible if your phone gets wrecked, if your working LED flashes during a work meeting and you get fired, or anything else.
Downloads and Install Instructions
To install this fix you have to be in a stock ICS 4.0.4 firmware v4.1.B.0.587, with root and ClockWorkMod (CWM) recovery installed.
To install the fix simply download the right package for you, and:
make sure your phone is charged! It's always safer when you need to flash something.
put the downloaded ZIP it in the root of your SD Card
reboot into CWM recovery
Do a Nandroid backup using CWM ("backup and restore" => "backup"): you shouldn't end in a bootloop if you download and apply the proper file, but it is a good practice to a CWM backup before applying mods and patches, so you can easily restore it and go back if anything goes wrong!
did I mention to do a Nandroid backup?
choose "Install ZIP from sdcard" => "Choose zip from sdcard"
browse to the ZIP in your SD Card
choose apply and reboot device.
enjoy a properly working led
The right package to download for you depends on your current system framework files status.
Use the following list and infos to find the proper download for you:
If you have an Xperia device on stock ICS 4.0.4 v4.1.B.0.587, and never applied other LED patches: install Busybox if you don't have it already, and download the following universal patch Ultimate_4.1.B.0.587_Notification_LED_FIX_UNIVERSAL_stock_rom_by_zxp.zip.
Note: Busybox must be installed on your device before installing this package, or it will not work. The patch scripts expects Busybox to be installed into /system/bin or /system/xbin.
If you never applied any patch and don't know what to download, this is the file you want!
Why: it is smaller, and only replaces the services.odex file with the patched one, that's all you need; the services.odex is automagically generated in your device, that's why Busybox is used, and this is what makes this package "universal".
If you your device currently has arcatarc's fix applyed: download Ultimate_4.1.B.0.587_Notification_LED_FIX_by_zxp_FOR_arcatarc_fix_users.zip
Why: if you used on arcatarc fix, this package will restore 4.0.B.0.587 framework files along with the patched services.odex, because arcatarc's fix installed the old 4.1.A.0.562 framework files and this change needs to be reverted.
If you are using a stock deodexed ICS 4.0.4 v4.1.B.0.587 firmware: download Ultimate_4.1.B.0.587_Notification_LED_FIX_FOR_DEodexd_roms_by_zxp.zip
Why: it will replace the services.jar with the patched classes.dex inside.
This works for all Xperia Devices, including but not limited to the Xperia Mini Pro sk17i/a.
If you are using the old firmware v4.1.B.0.431: you are lucky, I originally released the Ultimate LED FIX for firmware 4.1.B.0.431, you can download it from the old version thread.
If you are using a newer firmware: you have to wait for Sony to release this firmware for my sk17i, so that I can port the patch over the new version, or wait for someone to port it.
Background info, closing notes and thanks
As already specified this patch is based off stock 4.1.B.0.587 framework: I simply deodexed with baksmali, manually edited one .smali file to change the offending code that prevented the LED to work properly, and packed everything back.
I hope to find time to post very soon a Tutorial on how to apply the fix yourself, for educational purposes and to help less experienced people to port it over newer versions.
Experienced users should be able to compare the stock 587 baksmali-ed services.odex and the patched one to find the small change, and port it over new versions without the need of my forthcoming guide.
If you happen to port this patch to a newer firmware please post a link to your thread, so that I can add it in this post to inform users with such firmware that a patch exists for them.
If you want to inform other users of this patch please link back to this thread and don't simply re-upload/re-post a package. A link to this thread is the only way to be sure that users chose the proper package and can be updated if there is the need for a new/updated patch.
Bugs & Known Issues
This patch is now used by thousand of users without any reported issue or strange behavior.
If you install this patch and you end in a boot loop it means you have applied the wrong package. Please re-read the download info & instructions, and apply the proper zip. Period.
If you find any real problem please post it, and I'll update this section.
Changelog
2012.10.04 (current): applied my fix to the new firmware version 4.1.B.0.587, and released specific packages for this firmware version. The universal package now supports busybox both in xbin and sbin.
Additional Notes for those coming from arcatarc's fix
If you have used arcatarc "partial" fix you may have noticed that it had 2 major user visible problems:
the LED notification for missed calls was not working
it showed a single white blink when some notifications appeared in the statusbar: eg the Xperia Keyboard "choose input method" notification caused a white LED blink each time it appeared.
This patch doesn't have those problem, everything (seems!) to work as it should!

Bad thing is, that this led fix works only with stock sms app. I use other sms client, and with this, led don´t blink.

Xperia S apps, should work fine just like any other app with this patch I think.
I never used v6 supercharger, but as far as I can understand from a quick look it dynamically patches a given services.jar rather than simply replacing it (which is what my patch does).
So if you have v6 supercharer patch my patched service.jar/[o]dex you should have it both supercharged and with the working LED.

If you applied my .431 patch on .587 you can simply use the same type you already used. Eg: if you used the "universal" one, you can use the "universal" one again, it will override the previous one.

Im using the fix for .431 and works great on my .587, whats new in this one? should i change my mod?
Seems to work fine in my xperia Arc LTi15.
Thanks!
thank you so much man, finally my ARC S notif LED its work like a charm :fingers-crossed: ....
Do you know if this patch works for the Real ICS r6 rom (based on 4.1.B.0.587)?
Which package should I use in case it works?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Yes you should use this new version on a .587 based ROM, because if you use the fixed .431 file you are actually missing some fixes/changes that sony did in input method handling and other misc code, that you will restore by applying the new .587 patch.

If those roms are deodexed you should use the third package (Ultimate_4.1.B.0.587_Notification_LED_FIX_FOR_DEodexd_roms_by_zxp.zip) else you have to use the first (Ultimate_4.1.B.0.587_Notification_LED_FIX_UNIVERSAL_stock_rom_by_zxp.zip): either way you must be sure that your ROM has a unmodified services.jar(/odex) or you'll loose some customization.
Im using .587. Which one i need to download?

Is there a way to install it without a root or unlocked bootloader?
Thanks

Please read the Downloads and Install Instructions section in the first post, it contains a detailed answer to your question.

FAQ for Xperia Nexus Rom

This is a FAQ for the ROM created by me and alokbina - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37247130
Q1. How to install?
Ans : -
0. Get root and CWM on .587 custom/stock rom. (Only locked bootloader)
1. Copy Rom on SD Card.
2. Flash kernel panic or any custom kernel. (skip for locked bootloader)
3. Boot into CWM.
4. If coming from V1 Rom, don't wipe data. Just wipe cache partition and dalvik cache.
5. This is compulsory - Mounts and storage-->format /system. If you are a new user, wipe data/factory reset , cache, dalvik cache, and format /system. This is a very important step.
6. Install Zip from SD Card.
7. Select the zip and install. In Aroma, SELECT THE RIGHT CONFIGURATION ELSE BRICK YOUR TOUCH.
8. At the end of installation, it will ask you to reboot the device. Uncheck that box and complete installation.
9. Then TURN OFF, do not restart. ( turn off by just pulling out the battery)
10. Remove sd card, battery and sim card for 20-30 seconds. Then re-insert everything.
11. Start phone and wait till it boots. ( If you get a bootloop, do a full wipe and re-install )
11.5 - Go to setting and force stop apex launcher and clear data.
12. Restart the phone TWICE just to make sure that everything is okay.
13. Enjoy your super smooth xperia nexus phone
14. Optional - You can now install small apps if you need it from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1929016
The small apps above are 100% confirmed to be working. You are also free to flash anything from the list of patches in the link.
Q2. When will it come for other MDPI devices?
Ans : - Just select the correct device and bootloader status in Aroma installer and you should be good to go.
Q3. Is this for both bootloaders?
Ans : - Yes! It work on both bootloaders. I have tested it myself on both. Just follow the installation instructions carefully and you should be successful.
Q4. What will happen if I flash a ST15i rom on any other xperia mdpi?
Ans : - Your touchscreen will stop functioning and you will have a mini-heart attack.
Q5. How to free more ram?
Ans : - Actually, free ram is ram wasted. But anyway - if you have any background apps running like facebook or dropbox, just go to settings and force stop them. As of android honeycomb, once a user app is force stopped, it won't start unless you manually start it.
Q6. I experience a very bad battery drain. What to do?
Ans : - This happens because of the disabled CPU rendering. Although it should increase battery life, I experimentally found out that without it battery is better. Anyway, just flash the attached adreno libs and your problem should be solved.
Q7. Wifi is not working...
Ans : - Go and check your respective kernel page for the wifi modules and flash via CWM.
Q8. Which kernel do you use?
Ans : - Kernel Panic for best performance. Battery life is okay. Approximately rate of discharge is 1% per hour.
Q9. Is this rom good for gaming?
Ans : - With Kernel Panic, I play almost all games with no lag. Temple Run 2, Dead Trigger etc. all run buttery smooth on stock frequencies. Overclocking will definitely help, but don't overclock too much as it will fry your CPU.
Q10. I need a system app which is not included in your Rom..
Ans : - Download stock .587 and place it in firmware folder of flashtool. Open the ftf with winrar and extract system.sin. Then open flash tool and go to tools--->Sin editor. Select system.sin and press dump data. Then go to extractors---->Yaffs2 and select system.yaffs2 file. Wait for the process and then you will find a folder in firmwares called as system_content. Go there and then go to app and take whatever apks you need. Don't unnecessarily create new threads requesting for some specific apks.
Q11. Is this and that mod compatible...
Ans : - Any mod that is for .587 should work.
Q12. I have locked bootloader, but it is laggy..
Ans : - Performance of your device greatly depends on kernel. As you have locked bootloader, kernel panic or any other custom kernel is out of option. If possible, please unlock your bootloader and use kernel panic for the real nexus effect. We will try out best to increase performance on locked bl.
Q13. What to do to fix all the bugs?
Ans : - For now please use any fixes that you find for the bugs. If it is compatible with .587 then it should work. We are working to fix the bugs.
Remember - ALWAYS FOLLOW THE RULES OF XDA

Sorry for the lag but it is not possible to have as good performance on locked bl as that of unlocked bl. Custom kernels are more important than custom roms for performance. If possible please unlock your bl and use kernel panic. Also, the drivers that you flashed are only if you experience a battery drain. Flashing it reduces smoothness as it disables the gpu rendering mod..

[ROM][Live with Walkman][FFB ( Fast From Birth ) Debloated and enhanced ICS]

FFB ( Fast From Birth ) ICS ROM
This is my first work so go easy people and test it slowly, i've only tested on Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman so leave feedback about other devices too !
It is based on the ICS 4.1.B.0.587 version of android ! It is prerooted, zipaligned, busybox included, and signed !
Useless apps and frameworks has been ripped off ( Generally it's a fully debloated Stock ROM ), only basic apps, wallpapers and Radio has been left untouched. I suggest running the V6 Supercharger Script after installing this so that you get the full possible boost.WARNING
This ROM was created for performance and simple phone use so don't expect fancy things like Event Stream or other flashy apps in it !!!
I am NOT responsible for anything that happens to your device when you flash this ! You take full responsibility for your actions and I am not to be held responsible in any possible way !!!

INSIDE the zip file is the edited stock 4.1.B.0.587 boot.img and it includes : CWM Recovery, init.d support, unsecured, App2SD support ! I want to say a big thanks to adridu59 for providing the stock boot.img unsecured, with CWM and with init.d support already in it ! ( proper info and credits below ) !!

Now...off to the GOOD part
To install the ROM:
1) Copy the ROM to your SD-CARD
2) Boot into recovery
2a) wipe data/factory reset
2b) wipe cache
2c) wipe Dalvik Cache
2d) wipe /system
3) Flash the zip file
If you face any problems with the installation try reverting back to Stock ICS and then flashing the ROM.
Use it with Stock or Stock-based kernels ( I have tested with Lupus kernel, RAGE kernel and a few other stock based ! ).

Ummm...I don't own a LWW but your OP is full of errors :/ ...
1.)V6 Supercharger needs modified services.jar and I dont see the point in running script without it .
2.)init.d support is available on both BLs ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417375&highlight=init+d ..
3.)It's pointless to have a custom kernel on an unlocked bootloader without recovery ...you cant "install" recovery on Xperia MDPI ...
4.)ROM Manager doesnt work on Xperia devices ,it never worked before ,it doesnt work now
5.)No clear install instructions for each Bootloader
well, at least sumbody created a new rom after a while no devs does. Keep up your good work, fix the Op like the man above me said n please make a clean n clear explanation so you don't make regular people like me gettin confused.

1.) V6 Supercharger works just fine without the modified services.jar, all you lose is the launcher strength, but you still get the Low memory killer values and kernel and all other little tweaks.
2.) Yes but without an unlocked bootloader you still get the STOCK kernel and there is no way of getting TRUE init.d support without the customized one, at least that's waht i've seen as long as i've been using my phone
3.) You can install recovey and i'm pretty sure about it. I' ve tested this.
4.) Are you sure about this ?? :\ And i say again i've tested all my instructions
5.) What do you mean clear instructions ? It's pretty easy You a) open flashtool b) connect your phone to fastboot mode and then c) flash the kernel BUT it's not like i'm here to teach anyone how to do this, it's a custom ROM people you should know what to do with it
Gsm/Wcdma bug not fixed.

1.)Whatever...
2)No such thing as true init.d and false init.d as long as script is initialized on boot...
3.)Xperia MDPI has no recovery partition so you cant install recovery .I mapped the partition layout of SK17i(which is same as all other Xperia MDPI) so yes I am pretty much confident ...
Locked BLs have Pseudo recovery which vanishes on ROM installations and dont allow format systems from update script
Unlocked BLs use Custom Boot.img with Dual Ramdisks .
4.)I am pretty sure ROM Manager doesn't work since flash_image wont work ...It will just hard brick the device or do nothing at all .....
5.)You dont have clear instructions ....Check Other threads and you will see ...All ROMs have clear instructions for Locked and unlocked Bootloaders ...
According to your instructions locked bootloader peeps wont be able to use it due to lack of fastboot ...
Also the kernel is pointless since I doubt anyone with Unlocked BL will use a kernel without Dual Ramdisk/recovery Support. "True init.d " is ok but it's not as useful as Hard Recovery for which we unlocked Bootloaders
TBH ,I think ,you don't own the device or you have just owned it AND you are coming from an LG or HTC device ...The install instructions are more in line of an HTC/LG device rather than an Xperia Device ...

If you read the title, you'll see this ROM is only for LWW
Maybe I can take dev files from another ICS Rom, however it is good to have a stock .587 flashable zip with all bugs fixed (ok, except GSM/WCDMA net on reboot). If the developer won't update the links are there other projects like this? Or maybe someone can give me the links of all fixes for ICS?
Link fixed !
Yep, ROM has been tested ONLY on LWW but there is a slight chance it will work on other 2011 Xperia mdpi...not sure though !
New files UPLOADED now !!! ( They're only temporary since I plan on making a few enhancements, try them and let me know of the bugs that come up !
Also how do you see the idea of changing the default launcher ?
