ICS on Touchpad - TouchPad General

Good news,
@Preludedrew has gotten ICS booted up on the touchpad
This makes the touchpad sale tomorrow that much better.

good to see

this looks EXACTLY like the pictures from the CM7A2 thread on rw with fattire...
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/3477-rel...cyanogenmod-team-touchpad-port/page__st__6650
and this was..nearlly a month ago.. lookin at your screen indicates that the same error "still" occurs..which probably means, whoever it is you said "he/she" got ICS running just went ahead and redid fattires whole process just to end up with the same result?
Or he just followed his steps..
Either way.. it's no real progress, is it?

from his tweets it looks to me that he's not that much into cooperating, especially with CM and their work?
"preludedrew :
This is annoying > Coincidence or not, CM pulled the ICS branch for the HP tp kernel, after i tweeted/talked about getting ICS booting"
I highly doubt that they'd just pull because someone else showed he's also working on the same thing.. seems kinda stupid to me..
May I ask for reference regarding prelude? Haven't read anything from him?
and I still believe it's kinda suspicious that both attempts beside CM's show the same error.. wonder what's causing this
also it seems that his way of booting ICS doesnt really differ from fattires?
But I'm no dev after all

ICS aka Ice Cream Sandwich is the next iteration of Android (4.x) after 3.x Honeycomb which brings together tablet & phone.
not much there left to know besides technological aspects in detail..?

ics will get us running a tablet version of android rather than a phone version. say hello to proper tablet apps!

cyanogen always keeps their work to themselves until they feel comfortable releasing it. It's just how they run. They can do whatever the hell they want to, they pretty much dominate the android development scene.

Great news to hear about all of this development on the touchpad. I am thankful to everyone in the community that has worked so hard to bring us android to the touchpad.

I love android so much and I am running alpha 3 on my TP. I do love webos to though so I wish we could run android apparently within webos.

More drama... c'mon guys let's be patient... all devs just has half-working ports on native android devices

Running Alpha 3 also but cant figure out the wifi looping thing. Cant stop it. So I really cant wait for this. WebOs is so far good for browsing and email and i like the layers but not enough for me. Thanks a Devs!

I am more thankful to Max Krivonos, and Keyan Mobli (Scepterr/kmobs), Max is probably gonna be the maintainer for the Amaze for CM9 and is currently the maintainer for the MT4GS, kmobs is the maintainer of the Sensation for CM9 and has it to a point where he's said "So I'm now using ICS as my daily driver"... There is hope, but if you're looking for CM7/9 or any REAL AOSP build, don't expect xboarder to deliver that, I don't think he compiles anything, he's a themer/kanger/(insert less offensive term here). There is hope, but I'm dying to see some actual AOSP builds, GB or ICS.

If you can in a couple words, is the difficulty due to an equivilent of incompatible hardware, whatever the equivalent of a driver is, or the way the software operates in the system? It's obviously not like upgrading windows xp to windows 7
Just curious

By all means, if you want to use this to slam me, sure, this deserves credit, the reason I even said what I said was because nobody here has shown anything that was actually compiled with the exception of faux123, There are no real large improvements done by throwing an HTC Kernel, and a HTC base into a rom, this IS the kind of development I hadn't seen from you. Thus far (with this as the obvious excpetion) all the rom's that have been posted were effectively OEM based rom mashups. I am very impressed, and by all means, keep up the good work on a clean, from scratch rom. (I've seen pretty scary rom "developers" in the past, and I'm cautious at best with most of the developers for this device, and this thread has at least to some degree proved me wrong)
*edit, you should seriously consider contacting Max Krivonos, as he is the maintainer of the MT4G-Slide, and/or kmobs, obviously there are alot of framework differences with ICS, but they could probably be very useful in getting this working 100%.

It is a AOSP version ICS, I built the uImage from the tenderloin kernel in https://github.com/CyanogenMod/hp-kernel-tenderloin. There is another guy Andrew Boren who is also working on porting in https://github.com/Evervolv-ICS/android_device_hp_tenderloin, and my work is generally based on that.
You can see the screen shows "Unfortunately, System UI has stopped." Touchscreen is not working so there is nothing I can do except force shutting it down... But it still means that the booting is succeeded, screen is working, and I am happy to see that I can make such progress in only four days...
However when I shut it down and restart it, the system became stuck in booting and started looping the booting animation, which is very weird. I reinstalled the rom and it went back to normal, but I then restarted it and it went stuck again... Maybe there is something wrong in the BoardConfig.mk, I will try to figure it out in tomorrow...
I don't know whether I can fix that problem before the new year, I have to go to Birmingham to see a girl from 23th to 27th..... And I also need to keep on my current research works in the department, so my spare time is very limited.....
So don't hope too much on my works, there is nothing I can guarantee about, and I believe CM9 will be published before I can finish porting ICS, yeah.....
ok,looks like i have been out for this for a long time as there are already people working on it and stuck at the same problem…… sorry if my posts has given you false hopes……

I haven't used extract-files.sh, but the ko files from the second github link there.... But it seems like only the screen is working so I might need to find other ways to make my device work.
I found out the problem of booting, looks like the data folder has something bad inside, but I can't be sure as I don't have any debugging tools for porting work. I have to say I am quite new in doing this job....

Thanks for the link, though I have a feeling that as touchpad is such a special device it will not be successful only to change something from other ICS rom and wish it could also work on the touchpad....
It can only be done by programming of platform development from the AOSP source code, which is a completely new area for me to start with. (though I have learned a lot in this week, and I really enjoy it!)
I believe that based on the work of @preduledrew, if anyone want to make a successful porting the remaining work is nothing but only to make a correct hardware settings from it, more like debugging and tweaking instead of coding now...
@preduledrew has updated his files in github and will start to work with @dalingrin after christmas. I think that we can see a ICS port rom in the next Jan, though not from mine I believe....
PS: If there is anybody who might be interested in working on @preduledrew's source code, there is one thing you might need to know: His kernel file cannot work in touchpad so you have to make one of your own, I would suggest compiling from @dalingrin's kernel source code. When you finish that, combine the uImage and the ramdisk built from ICS AOSP source code to make the boot.img and use that to boot up your touchpad.

I guess $99 is a good reason to have 1 foot in multiple eco-systems (altho I really do like having 3 devices all in the same eco-system now, thanks to CM for TP)
EDIT: for anyone that doesn't have the links: for TP dev: https://twitter.com/#!/dalingrin
for Sensation dev: https://plus.google.com/113702637309752822154/posts (they do use the same basic chip 8x60... hopefully they are each benefiting from each others work)
Looks like the disscussion here becomes misleading..... Anyway, as @dalingrin has anounced his progress about porting ICS to Touchpad, and sounds like the first alpha rom will be available in a few days, I think my work right now is meaningless, and I will stop it as there are also many other stuffs occupied in my life... Though it is not something beyond my expectations. But I will continue to do my learning of this area, and might work out the AOSP ICS rom of my own if everything is going well (though I fully doubt...), the experiences I have gained may come in handy in the future.
How I wish I could start do this kind of learning when I was having plenty of free time....
Anyway, thanks for the guys who ever support me for that.

Whats up with the notification bar?

I have no clue why or who ever in Samsung development messed this up, but when you stream flash videos in full screen the notification does not auto hide. To me this is completely unacceptable as it ruins the possibility of "full screen" and it can actually damage the oled in these phones.
I think this fix should be a MUST for any developer currently making rooms for this phone. The only from currently that I know of that fixes it is Cyanogen.. but I do want a stable ICS and oh boy can't we all dream of a perfect aosp from... dreams of super fast clean friendly user experience...

Why be a dev if your goal is half ass roms? The only thing I'm wondering is why has this not been addressed by the community? Why is this still "OK" and why are trolls immediately the only ones present in this forum?

AS said above, it looks like your are running ICS which is in beta and has not been officially released, you are complaining about an unfinished, unofficially released BETA rom.
You may need some time of reflection and a lot of reading to understand what you are doing......
Why be a dev if your goal is half ass roms?
You answer your question yourself why build a rom based on a half assed buggy beta release .
Put in a very simple way . Why waste time on a buggy beta build that may be very different come release day .
When ICS is released and if a dev thinks its worth fixing your problem i am sure they will .
jje
OK it sounds like no one understood , I will attempt to explain this better. This is NOT an ICS problem this problem is with EVERY rom including stock update strait from Kies. I went as far as contacting Samsung to get a fix, but as you can see in my profile I live in the US and the US Samsung will not help me with my UK phone. Why everything between us is so divided beats me but still the issue remains.
As I stated currently the only rom that fixes it is Cyanogen but just as JJ stated why use a buggy beta when the release will be much different/better. Also I am currently running ICS and have not encountered a single bug. Everything works perfect except for Samsung's stupid attempt to burn in my screen. I don't know about everyone else but I paid $580 for this phone and the last thing I want is a permanent" 3g" on my screen...

Then give us more information. Saying that streaming videos don't go full screen is no where near enough. What ROM, website, browser etc are you using because the last time I tried this (Not long after the S2 was released) it worked just fine. I tried a 720p video from megaupload and it went full screen just fine. Same with youtube/youtube app. Give more information, not attitude. Also, i'd wager than there is zero chance of your display burning in a 3G icon. Perhaps the full notification bar if you use MIUI/a white or light theme but I highly doubt the majority of people will experience any burn in, never mind such a small specific burn in.
Fair enough.. more info. I usually run completely stock and decided to play around with ics. A main site I stream with is twitch.TV (I am a big starcraft2 player and use the pro streams to get better) while I'm at work I watch for hours sometimes 7 hours straight. This WILL cause burn in.
When the problem occurs:
Watching ANY true flash video online(not YouTube app) while in full screen mode in any browser or Rom besides cyanogen.
If you don't believe me test it yourself. Go to twitch.TV pick a stream let the video load and click the full screen button. If you have a rom that the notification bar disappears let me know and you won't hear.me "moan" anymore.
Or maybe one of you super nice Brits can call UK Samsung and get an official fix. The number is 08702420303.

Does this work on the new ICS browser? I only see 2.xx on there. It would be a beneficial trade but I just started enjoying the new browser :/

Download the diff, check for relevant changes (there's not many for fullscreen) and mod your own browser. Before you ask, I'm not going to hold your hand on this one, and am not willing to do it for you either (I don't use an ICS ROM).
Not asking for any hand holding or hand outs for that matter.. one last question can it be done completely from the phone?
Actually nvm that browser mod will not work with ics. Even states in that post "should be comparable with 2.3.x roms.

Sure it will, you just have to be willing to put in some work. Namely, as I already said, downloading the diff, checking for relevant changes (I think there's only two changes relating to full screen) and getting them into your Browser.apk. You're probably going to need to do some reading.
Judging by this part of your post:

Recruiting testers for CM7 Alpha

Alright, I decided to give the community a chance to test what we have in a very small, easily controlled group. Before I start with the information:
THIS IS NOT JUST BECAUSE YOU WANT THE DAMN ROM! THIS IS A TEST FOR A REASON! DO NOT BUG US WITH STUPID APPLICATIONS OR YOU WILL BE DENIED! Thank you
Alright, now what we are looking for is testers who have experience with android custom firmware (meaning, you have another android device and can typically solve your own problems) It's also mandatory that you don't leak the build. If you do, expect consequences.
If you are not qualified, DO NOT APPLY. I assure you, we will only choose who we think is right. Not you just because you are tired of stock. This will ensure a better experience for you in the release.
Only 10 people will be accepted.
Anyway, the link to the form to fill out is here:

Oh Oh Oh!!!! Can I be a tester please, please, I once eat ice cream upside down from a cone while riding a donkey when I was younger so I'll definately be able to test and give useful debugging feedback !!!
PLEEEEEEEEASE !
I'll be a tester too but Google docs gives me an error
Send from a better Galaxy
Try again Pete
Yep it worked thanks. Wouldn't be my first time as a closed beta tester.
Sorry for my bad English...

You nasty bap!!!
I'm gonna spam your inbox and tell all my kinder garden friends to spit in your milk!
I signed up as well. I've always loved installing custom firmwares on what would otherwise be locked-down devices, even if the firmware only comes in the form of a risky alpha, so it's about time I started doing it constructively and using my experiences to report bugs and whatnot.
Side note: I also really like how you guys are down to earth and listening directly to the community; homebrewers and hackers in other communities seem to be way more elitist and have weird god complexes. It's refreshing that you guys just straight up say "If you have any ideas, let me know. If you want to discuss the matter more directly, PM me." I've honestly never seen that before I started following this dev project.

I thought I was the only one who ever rode a donkey while slurping on my ice cream in southern Morocco.
I guess it's a common thing!
My device acted up and would not sumbit, tried again on something else and it went through.
If you are registered Android developer (meaning you've paid Google for the privilege and have something in the Market)... should be a consideration.
There's always next year!
Holy tinkerer, Celty! Seems I don't fit the requirements to be a tester. Back to the Lab! to gain some knowledge. NEXT TIME you guys! next time!

Oh my, that image just gave me chills. Must has.
I signed up and hope you pick me.
I appreciate your amazing efforts on Android devices and, since I cant develop like you all, would like to help by testing.
Also, you guys have sliced and diced the NT and we have quickly learned that there are many ways back from NT darkness.

Lol no, never too late
I just totally bricked my NT from CWM it would appear, I went to see if CWM could be used to partition the SD to allow creating of a boot SD, went to format menu, decided against it and rebooted. TOO LATE! bricked NT lol
That CWM is more lathal than our original bug!
Oh well time to rebuild all the partitions at least it didn't wipe xloader like the CM7 bug did

just saying, we don't need to crack the bootloader
and we have ics, as well as miui and cm7. No big deal though
All respect though, good job on this! I believe I pass requirements to test but that would make me need a NT, which I obviously don't
Then that brings the question.. what am I doing here? Just checking things out.. seeing how hard it would be to port ics over..

[ROM/WIP] Android 4.1 Jellybean (AOSP) for Ace 2

Howdy.
I'm back to Android development (as mentioned on Twitter).
Let this thread be here, while I work on something that is worth showing you.
Do I care for the fact that Samsung wants to release 4.1 by themselves? Nope.
I'm sick of running stock 2.3 firmware. It's virtually unusable.
Now enlighten me where I can get original digitizer for Ace 2. Let's say I have a defected unit.
Glass cracked just from putting it on the table (gently)... And then 5 days later again, after doing the same thing.
Might catch me here often: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/coding-rant
This is a part of Sakura AOSP Project.

While Android is opensource, not everything needs to be opensource. If a company doesn't want to publisch the board-support-package, they don't have to. At that point, you have to write this bsp yourself.... Which can only be done by reseverse engineering. A company like ST Ericsson develops a chipset. A team of more then 10 people is then involved to port Android to this chipset. They look for clients and to every client they dedicate a special team that helps the client (Samsung in this case, but also Sony) to adopt this port to their needs and their platform. The client then ports their layer (Touchwiz for Samsung) to the new platfrom. So you're looking at maybee 30 people involved to get Android up, running and bug-free on a one specific phone..... People who get payed to do this at work. People who will get paid extra time if needed. People who do this as a day job.
Now, let's get back to XDA. We're looking here at one to two active developers who do the porting in their spare time. They are not getting paid for it. They just do it for the trill, so let's stop asking them for timelines or updates. Let's keep it a fun thing for them to do. If not.... Wel... if it's not fun anymore for them to share their work.... they will simple stop sharing and they have all the rights in the world to stop sharing!
bangz0r, keep up the good work

I'd rather use Windows as my desktop OS at home rather than garbage such as Ubuntu. By far, Ubuntu is the worst Linux distribution after openSUSE and Mandriva.
Well, I have a dedicated server set-up remotely that's running Debian 6.
Like I said, I'd build on my Mac but MacPorts isn't cooperating.
http://f.o323.com/23U8 (huge image)
Did try to build with standard setup on Mac, didn't work well. Spit out dozens of issues.
That's sort of bad because building is really fast on i7. :/
EDIT:
If it's really worth any trouble and this thing really fires up as intended, then I will set a git repo up.
...If it's not, I'll dispose of this phone and get Xperia S.
Good luck mate, I hope it works.. Would be a great step for our phone
Yeah good luck! I hope it Will boot
And of course thanks for your work.

Should thank to marcin1147 too. He's great help.
Watch my stream daily guys, I like to show thinks I'm working on and perhaps talk opinions.
EDIT:
Hell, if it doesn't boot - one good thing there is to Samsung is that their devices are unbrickable.

bagnz0r, you are back ! ? !
I thought that you left Android for good (according to your twitter some time ago) and moved to iPhore or Nookia or something like that.
I bought ACE 2 just because you did it. If JB for I8160 will be the same quality like ICS for Galaxy ACE, then we are saved.

A Intel Atom 330 1.6 GHz (dual-core; ht) is pretty weak
Regarding broken digitalizer:
http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale/wholesale-for-samsung-galaxy-ace-2-i8160-digitizer.html
This site is chinese, but they are trustworthy. They never charge you with shipping cost and they always know how to "fix" the problem with taxes, fees 'n stuff.
You can always buy digitalizer from here:
http://allegro.pl/dotyk-szybka-digitizer-sam-i8160-galaxy-ace-2-wym-i2748472924.html
If you will change it youself, can you make some photos from opened I8160. I would like to see what kind of Proximity sensor they've put in Ace2. I think there is light sensor inside, but i just want to be 100% sure. Also it will be helpfull for DYI purposes.
