[Q] Help Flashing ICS & clockwork - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to flash ICS to my phone but i cant boot into recovery. I Odin'd The froyo EBO1 and havent done changes after that. its on 2.2.1 and kernel 2.6.32.9. i continue to get blue screen recovery and the error triangle when i try to apply Zip or boot into recovery from ROM Manager. the clockwork is version 3.0.0.8 i believe. is there any conflict with that version & 2.2? if so what is my solution to get into clockwork and flash it
This is my error message,
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation Aborted
Help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Go to the general section and find Droidstyle's guide. It will give you exact steps on what you need to do.

The simple answer is you need to replace your stock recovery with a modified 2e or 3e recovery that clockworkmod is compatible with.
Since you are on 2.1, I believe you will need the 2e, but it may be easier for you to Odin to froyo and use a 3e recovery instead.
heres a video on how to do it.
Just search around for the modded recovery. Any should do.

Thats not correct...you need cwm4 for mtd to flash ics.

Yeah i used your guide in the generals, Droidstyle. worked like a charm. makes me feel dumb that i had such a hard time

What droidstyle said. Odin cwm4 and enter it with three finger method immediately after you re-insert in your battery and flash away. ICS is very functional especially for alpha build and quite stunning visually.

Yeah it its I'm surprised at how smooth it is. I know mms doesn't work outgoing, but I can receive. That's normal right

Can't flash ROMs no matter what i do

Im coming from 2.3.2 - XWJV1 [Gingerbread on Vibrant], after ODIN, and when i wanted to flash the latest Bionix i got an error
E: Can't symlink /system/bin/su
E: Failure at line 16:
symlink /system/xbin/su SYSTEM.bin/su
Installation Aborted.
every time i get this, i have to do another ODIN because it just does a loop in the android system recovery and will not get out, so i had to ODIN 3 times.
now when i try to flash a ROM it just keeps replacing stock recovery with clockwork mod recovery, i do the usual steps to install a ROM and it just does a loop. i tried different clockwork flash versions and either it wont let me install the older ones or the only 2 versions that work have loop problems.
HOW DO I FIX THIS, IM SO STRESSED OUT, THIS IS UNNECESSARY!
after doing install rom from sd option, i was able to get out of the loop but i got
E: Can't symlink /system/bin/su
E: Failure at line 16:
symlink /system/xbin/su SYSTEM.bin/su
Installation Aborted.
i still cant flash anything and i already tried eugenes files.
got into clockwork but when i put install files from sd card > choose from sd then it when i choose update.zip it just goes back to the android system recovery.
then i put reinstall files from the android system recovery and it just sends me back to clockwork recovery...
Try a diff. tar for when you Odin, you may have a corrupt file. Have you try Eugen JK2 tar file, prerooted?
Are you clicking reinstall packages?
Are you going through clockwork or rom manager?
Did you install the root update zip to reroot?

Make sure you have root. This happened to me recently also. Im doing my best to try to remember what I did so I can help you better.

trust me, im rooted.
Try Ugenes no brick file when you odin. Has worked for me in the past.
Odin back to JFD (make sure to check repartition) then boot and let it go through loading, then root the phone, Then load CWM, then load your new rom and load from recovery NOT CWM, you will have no problems.

Ok I just went through this less than a month ago with my captivate. I have a twenty page topic on this EXACT issue. I had all the major devs pming me and doing everything under the sun for probably a total of thirty hours. Result - NO ONE KNOWS HOW TO FIX THIS. This issue is not specific to our phones, there have been cases of this on almost every android phone. Your gonna get people telling you to do all this elementary trouble shooting...the problem is far too deep dont waste your time. You can flash back to stock with every tar and pit file this side of samsung...not gonna work. SOMETHING is not getting wiped. Save yourself the time and sell the phone to someone who will not use custom roms.
Also no rm/wipe command through abd is gonna help either! Sorry just telling you from someone who experienced this hell. Also every thread in existence on the internet on this subject has died out without an answer. If you read for enough hours you will find out the hard way! Good luck my friend!

Custom recovery is never going to stick now. Every reboot now it is gonna be gone...dont know why but from my research, it is permanent.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Are you able to re install the original rom? I and many others with this issue had that unique problem of being able to install ONLY the rom that was running before everything went to hell. There lies the key I believe to all of this. What makes only one work.

I did it many times as well with about 5 different images and Odin versions. I can get to :
Clockworkmod recovery
Stock recovery
Download mode
T-Mobile + Samsung splash screen
- That's it... then bottom touch controls lit up.
Ok, I did a little digging and I found this:

LMAO!!! I understand that your frustrated but there is no need to blame other members. There is always a risk flashing a rom. If you are not willing to accept the risk then you shouldn't be flashing roms at all. Whitehawkx has helped many people in the vibrant community and its not his fault if YOU decide to flash his rom and don't know what your doing. You wont get much help around here with that attitude. Good luck

I get the same error, but I may be arriving at it from a different method. I'm new to this, so I wanted to get all the pieces together before flashing anything. I got rom manager from the market, the fixed cwm (not loaded yet), sc 2.9.2, and odin. I was looking at rom manager, and saw the option to "flash recovery" so I thought this would be a shortcut. I did it, and it says I have 3.0.0.8. So then I wanted to backup my current rom (stock). When I selected "create backup", it prompt for a name, then reboots (into recovery) and that's when I get that error. Recovery text is blue. When I select "apply update.zip", I get nothing but a blank screen with the triangle and droid image.
Another thing that concerned me was that the market description of rom manager says that samsung users have to flash a compatible kernel first. That made me nervous, because I didn't want to flash anything until I had a backup.
I get the feeling that using the 3/30 cwm fix will resolve that issue.

Yes, following GizmoDroid's steps for the 3/30 cwm fix should help. The other thing that will help is leaving rom manager alone and not touching it at all. It no workie for our Fascinates right now. Neither does the orange cwm 3.0.0.8. But I believe I read that several of the devs want to start pushing toward that cwm. For now though stick with the 03/30 and don't touch rom manager for anything.
Is there any other app to use for backing up roms? Or should I just get the stock ea28 rom to keep as a backup?

I use titanium backup to backup my apps, sms backup for my text messages, sync my contacts to my gmail account, and now that these great devs have given us a working cwm that allows us to do nandroid backups and restores, you can use that to save a snapshot of pretty much your entire phone except I think I read somewhere it does not backup your kernel and modem.

[q] cwm 3.0.2.8

Hey all,
Totally went back to stock...so started with DL09 and then proceeded up to ED04. I installed CWM (red) and rebooted into it and then rooted my phone. Worked great...this morning decided to wipe the battery stats...now it just goes to the Samsung (blue) recovery one. I decided to reflash with ODIN and it still just gives me the Samsung one. Any ideas on how to get this working again???
It sounds like your flash may have failed. Maybe try it again. It might be easier and more reliable to use heimdall in this situation as well.
Also, I know it's early, but this is a question and should be posted in the appropriate section.

You have to download this and ODIN to the phone ...
Code:
http://goo.gl/QCYxT
... What's happening is when you are booting up fully it is replacing the new recovery with the stock recovery... flash this, then flash CWM .. all will be cool!!

Heimdall works like Odin. Cwr is being overwritten by the stock kernel, you should flash a custom kernel if you want cwr to stick.
*Edit...beat me to it. :/

You may have to flash a custom kernel to get your recovery permanent. I did the same thing to get the ed04 ota.
1. Flash the dl09 tar file in odin, don't reboot.
2. Flash the cwm3 odin file of your choice, don't reboot.
3. Boot into recovery using the 3 finger salute (should be the one you just odined).
4. Flash the custom kernel of your choice & reboot.
That should keep it rooted & keep cwm available to you, at least it did for me. The key, fwig, is to repalce the stock kernel cuz that is what will replace cwm when it boots.

I would re download the zip file...using jt's recovery you shouldn't have a problem...you could just have a bad download...it's happens to me more then once...not on this rom but a bad download is not that uncommon that is why some people put hash check sums on there files so you can make sure of a good download prior to flashing
re download and try again with the same recovery...if that doesn't help I made it to cm7 twice with the purple times infinity cwm..both times without a hitch
I'm not sure if this info will help I'm just relaying what worked for me.

i used the eb01 package. after i got cm7 v5 on when i try and flash miui i get a cant open /cache error when i try and wipe.
Did you go to eb01 then straight to cm7? If so which cwm did you use and if you didn't go straight there what rom did you flash in between?..maybe you should try atlas 2.2 with eb01 and boot fully, then odin cwm and flash com rom 2.0 then reboot fully, then reboot cwm wipe everything then try to go to cm7 or miui that's what worked for me to get to cm7 build 7, afterwords I just wiped cache and dalvik and flashed build 8...no issues for me.

Agree with last post unless instructions tell you to use rom manger then dont use it .
A clue as to what rom might have helped .
Questions = Q&A section .

Theres a way of turning the verification off let me boot into recovery and refresh my memory

Under install sd card you can toggle image verification. Turn this to off but check the md5 of the rom and make sure its not a corrupt download

I've tried cyanogenmod and miui.
Follow the instructions from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176411
Note from the instructions: do not flash from ROM Manager when you're flashing CM7 the for the first time.
