Manual Nooter Sort of Works on 1.4.1 - Nook Color Android Development

I'm looking a bit more at rooting via manual nooter on OS 1.4.1.
As of now, the Android Market is not working
In my hands, the BN shop is also not working. Books cannot be downloaded. (The reader does work, though, so you can shop and then download to your PC, then push the files in manually if you like.)
Together, those two elements not working argue against rooting 1.4.1 for anything other than study and development, I think.
- 1.4.1 installs on a device which had already been rooted (this device is rooted but not overclocked.)
- boot from a manual nooter 4-5-18 disks works
- after applying MN 4.5.18 and the APK enabler, the device booted. Root was retained and SU works fine (I was able to use adb wireless)
- install via ADB works
Other things to be aware of:
- this is not a Gingerbread release for the NC.
- the home button behavior is changed a LOT. Home Catcher for the Nook Tablet will also work here, though.
- the device automagically snarfs Google contacts if it's registered to a gmail address, it seems. There is no warning on that. I think that behavior is a Big Effing Problem.

About to try hopefully it works. I know I couldnt install update on 1.3 with CWM going back to complete stock and then update and then MN.

Yes, if CWR is written to your boot, you cannot install BN updates.
It might be possible to use a flashable 1.3 installer to write only /boot, reboot, then update to 1.4.1. I know there is a flashable 1.3, but I do not know where it lives.

Yeah I went back to 1.3 stock and then to 1.4.1 update.

It would be nice if some one conforms about Market

"It would be if some one conforms about Market"
Yeah, wouldn't it?
I'm figuring from the lack of screaming it's probably working.

Market is up. Some apps still missing. Having a bit of problem with Zeam launcher. Nook launcher is taking control.
Straight from my ICS i897 Sonic Screwdriver!!!!!

So from a rooted 1.3.1 you:
Use CWM to install a vanilla 1.3 ROM, then update to 1.4.1 via B&N download, then root using only 4.5.18? I seem to remember to root 1.3.1 you needed to root with 4.5.16 and then 4.5.18.

I have been able to use 4-5-18 without any problems on both 1.2 and 1.3.
You may not even need to install the vanilla ROM - you may well be able to install to a rooted device, so long as you have not meddled with /boot, either by installing a CWR boot internally or by overclocking.
My fast experiment this morning involved updating a rooted 1.3, then rooting that resulting 1.4.1.

Anyone check to see if it will still boot from an SD card, just want to confirm before update, but because it is still rootable I can always downgrade.
Edit: I am in the process of updating as I type this, I will post the results in case anyone else needs them.

Others have tested and confirmed, but that's not something they can change on this device with a software update anyway

Good to know, I hadn't seen it yet but my testing confirms this, thanks for the reply

In my case the Market runs but it's totally useless: I can't see my apps, it doesn't find most of what I want to install and when it does I can't install anything (it just goes back to the Apps menu). So it totally sucks since the B&N market is really lame!

For whatever reason, many Nook Colors that come stock with 1.3 installed just bootloop if rooted with 4.6.16, even if rooted first with 4.5.18. I can confirm this with a new NC purchased for my girlfriend's mom. Runs OK if just rooted with 4.5.18, except for it having the ancient market. Haven't been able to update the market yet, though gmail will update itself.
Updated to 1.4.1 (had to return to stock 1.3 to install the update, even without CWM flashed), using homecatcher to overcome the new "n" button "feature", but market is hit and miss. Was able to download and install Astro, but Titanium Backup doesn't want to download and install. I'll try sideloading it later.

What's the new n button feature? Is it possible to make a flashable update, like with 1.2 and 1.3?

If you press it once, it brings up the B&N "dock" that used to be at the bottom of the screen. If you press it twice, it brings up the B&N launcher.
Correction, I thought I was able to download Astro from market, but apparently I didn't. Now I've got no way to sideload apps, which makes this pretty useless...

ADB commands are your friend! Pretty much as long as you can enable ADB you can sideload with zero issues.

I realize this, but this nook is a gift for my girlfriend's mom, who lives out of state, and I know there's no way she's going to sideload everything using ADB... I need to get her a working market, even if I've got to go back to 1.3 and disable the update.

Ended up using 4.5.18 on my stock 1.3 NC. ADB Sideloaded in the Kindle app and a couple others and used the Nook App Manager to drop icons out on the main stock launcher page. I was really looking to add teh Kindle app so I could read all my purchased books on a single device, so I'm quite content. I'd like to see better market, etc but it's not a dealbreaker for me.

Just in case someone follows this thread, rooted 1.4.1 is working well now. manualnooter-5-12-18.zip does it for ya.
Market works. You can add non-B&N apps to the B&N app and home screens using Nook Color App Manager. Putting the Kindle app on there is no problem. Netflix, HBO GO and Max GO work. Hulu Plus refuses to run on the device. B&N subscriptions download and update the dock. B&N enhanced content (e.g. Wired magazine) work fine.
If non-techie friends and family want an enhanced B&N Nook Walled Garden experience, this will do it!

[ROOT][BN1.2-FROYO] MiniRooterV2 for Stock Froyo 1.2 + Stock/OC Kernel

CREDITS TO GabrialDestruir,et al (MN 4.5.6) & Dalingrin (OC kernel)
* All warnings implied and applies.. your Nookie might turn into a Cookie... so use at your own risk!
* I'm NOT a DEV nor is this something special, so get over it
This CWR flashable kernel is ONLY for STOCK Barnes and Noble's Froyo 1.2 update. MiniRooter V2 is based upon GabrialDestruir's MN 4.5.6 & Dalingrin OC kernel for stock Froyo 1.2 release 5/13.
Why should I jump on this bandwagon??
MiniRooter will make you 35% happier... j/k it might make you sadder. Ok, maybe not, but it will save you some headaches. It was made for my own selfish use, but I decided it was time to share.
It is NOT for people who wants FULL Android tablet functionality! Go install CM7, Nookie Froyo, or use the ManualRooter.
The purpose of Mini Rooter is to allow stock BN 1.2 users access to SU, overclock, install third party apps (sideload), and install apps from Amazon app market. It is intended to mainly add and NOT modify any essential NOOK files, thus keeping the BN Nook experience as functional as possible for its intended purpose. However, you can really make it bi-polar and install other stuff too if you want. For a GREAT & free exchange email client w/calendar, find MoxierMail from the Amazon appstore. It is awesome.
The main reason for not modding file systems and installing the google market is to avoid problems I ran into with the MN 4.5.6 install, ie. touch page flips of children's book, BN store not working on purchases, instore access, and other headaches.
NO install issues with Angry Birds from the Amazon app store. When installing, choose "Package Installer"
Essentially, this mod is for newbies and/or tree-hugging hippies and minimalists with a lust for power and a thirst for frozen lemonade. mmm.. frozen lemonade.
What it does?
* Installs SU & busybox (rooting)
* Replaces stock kernel with Dalingrin's OC Kernel (up to 1.2ghz!!)
* Installs these apps:
adbwireless
Amazon Appstore
Button Savior
Calculator
SetCPU - you should donate (its also on the android market)
TouchRecalibrate
Zeam
Nook Color Tools - change settings, install 3rd party apps
Rom Manager - CWR & backups
Youtube - for learning how to dougie
Pick a Flavor:
MiniRooterV2-BN1.2-OC
MiniRooterV2-BN1.2-OC-dualboot
*Added 5/17
Flash these files after the previous if your girlfriend/sister/wife keeps nagging you this Nook Color is too fast, and you want to put an end to that.
Stock Kernel - BN 1.2 - Froyo
Stock Kernel - BN 1.2 - Froyo - Dual Boot
* These should work for other practical applications as well, so feel free to snag them just in case.
Devs - please let me know if you wish me to remove any/all of your work that have been included in this release. Thank you for your hard work and dedication, which inspires me to learn and contribute to this community.
Mods - if this is not acceptable, please move it/delete/or throw a fit.

1. Go into Nook Color Utils - uncheck and then recheck "Allow Non-Market Apps"
2. Button Savior needs Super User permission, so make sure you press "Allow" when the pirate greets you.. in some cases it will not work since the stock BN codes has set the 'n' button to be "back" in fullscreen apps. In cases where there's a "back" button on the taskbar, that will also take priority from button savior.
Great work! Exactly what I was looking for. Only a few questions:
Do side-loaded apps appear in the APPS menu or do I have to use Zeam to access them?
Is it possible to replace Dalingrin's kernel with stock afterward?
Thanks

Use Zeam for sideloaded apps to show, download AppHome if you want to use the 'n' button to default to Zeam and still return to stock Home.
Just flash a stock kernel over it if you don't want to OC... or just not do anything to setCPU.
Btw: GOOOO THUNNDDERRR!!! Wooohoo... Durantula!!!
Something told me to look at XDA one more time before getting back to work. This is awesome, thanks.
Question
Sorry if this is a noob question, but how do I boot from this? I just got a replacement Nook Color that came pre-loaded with 1.2 and I can't seem to nooter it for the life of me!! I've downloaded this and copied it to an SD card, but it doesn't boot. I can't get it to boot from a Clockwork Recovery SD card either. Any help would be appreciated!!

First of all, you have to be able to get into Clockword Recovery. If you can boot into CWR from and SD card, all you have to do is choose "install from zip", choose the file from the OP, yes, and flash it. That should do the trick. It's not a "bootable" file by any means. If you still have problems, keep reading and try different methods. It's hard to give you advice since I don't know your level of knowledge.

Glad to hear that.. Dual booting is kind of hairy, so make sure you do a lot of reading and do a nandroid backup before plunging in.
I have the stock BN 1.2 minirooted on the dual boot of the emmc. Primary partition has been back and forth between cm7 and nookie froyo.

How about using [ADV][DEV][CWM]Copy Nook Stock to SDcard Image[5/9] thread to move your image to SDcard.
Keep whatever we want in emmc, and boot this from the SDcard.
I currently have phiremod v6.2 in emmc, with Dal's beta 3.1 32 kernel on verygreens SDcard. Going to try installing [UPDATE ZIP] Stock 1.2 update.zip flashable from CWM, your ROM, and then using rack's [ADV][DEV][CWM]Copy Nook Stock to SDcard Image[5/9] thread to move your image to SDcard to move it to another SDcard.
From CWM will do nandroid backup before and will restore after I complete the above procedure. When I boot phiremod v6.2 from emmc, I have a 16GB data/video/music SDcard in my nookcolor.

If I wanted couple of the gapps, say gmail and google voice could I just use my side loaded Titanium Backup to restore them from my CM7 data disk that contains them?
In MN what gapps are they using? Could I add them here later if I wanted to? I guess that defeats the purpose of this ROM.
Is there an alternative to gmail that anyone would recommend? I use google voice in CM7 for texting, how about an alternative for google voice?

I don't have my NC with me (at work right now) to verify the S/N, but I was able to root my previous NC (very seasoned with rooting many other android devices) with no problems. I'm beginning to think that I may have a "faulty" one, but I don't know how I can get it swapped again within the warranty. I did notice ONE dead pixel, but I doubt they'll swap it out for that! This thing is virtually useless to me without being able to root it!!!

You could try installing gapps and google voice and see if it works. It might not without modifying system files, and that's something this release tries to avoid. You don't need an alternative to gmail since the included BN email app is a multi-email client (gmail, yahoo, etc) but doesn't include exchange (Moxier Mail is a great alternative).

That's nice.. I only had to format/reinstall 23523434x to find out after MN, the BN store doesn't even load, give me these weird errors and check barnesandnoble.com blah blah. I then became a hippy and did it my way. And sometimes, less is more... even in version numbers of apps (which doesn't add anything to the functionality except a new version number).
@ Zephyr757 - hope you didn't get a lemon. I thought you just copied the zip file to the uSD and tried to boot that.

Newbie questions

I have a nook tablet and looking into rooting. Had an iPhone jailbroken from day 1 so very interested in this process for the nook. Apparently its best to down grade to 1.4 first since my nook updated. My daughter received new nook today but she is not giving it up and already has 1.4. I keep asking to trade but not having anything to do with it. Once I move down to 1.4 I can root and block updates it appears. However I do have a question on side loading. I have seen this term used a lot but unsure of its meaning. If I am rooted do I not just use the market to download apps to the nook once rooted?? Do you have to constantly sideload apps even after rooting?? thanks for any help
Sideloading - installing applications/games directly via apk (android package) you have on your home computer or on the SD card of the NT.
A rooted device allows you to download and install apps/games from Google Market as well as Amazon Appstore.
it is driving me crazy looking how to install the apk's from the sd card or computer. running 1.40 I have unknown sources loaded. but i can only sideload the apps if I download them from the nook browser.
how the hell do i load them from the sd card.
btw I am not rooted yet....computer keeps installing it as a storage device and that wont work for the life of me

Help with keeping NT at 1.4.0
Purchased a nook tablet for my mom for christmas but she wants apps not available on nook appstore so I got amazon appstore downloaded and apps added and then got the 1.4.1 update. I got it reset to 1.4.0 and set back up. I don't want to root because I am worried mom will have problems. (she is 73 years young) Happy with it the way it is with nook stuff working and having ability to get other apps from amazon. I keep turning off wireless to keep it status quo. All of the options to block ota seem to need the nt to be rooted. Is there a way to keep at 1.4.0, not root the nt, and be able to keep wireless on??
my undrstanding is root is required and i bet your grandmother would love android market

It seems like she's coming to you for problems, which means she shouldn't have to worry about rooting, and going into the store for help. She probably won't notice anything with missing out on the 1.4.1 update, as it seems like the only thing that was changed was breaking roots and sideloading. If it actually introduced new functionality, I would be amazed. And she probably won't do something that would break her tablet after you root it... it's not like rooted makes killing your system trivial. It is "easy", but you still have to activate root mode, mount /system rw, and then and THEN, you have to do something stupid.
So, I would stop stressing about rooting her device, but then again, if the next update actually forces something that will break the B&N apps (like change the server interface, or something, and reject anyone with an earlier version) then she would either have to live without them, or reset the nook and lose everything (hopefully, you would back it all up, though, right?)
Of course will back up but I was afraid it would make it too complicated but I guess I am going to root and see if she likes it. We can always reset the whole thing back to the beginning. Thanks for the confirmation that I need to root to block ota.
Thanks for the help!!!

[Q] Nook 1.4.1 update automatically applied, best option?

My nook updated to 1.4.1 last night, breaking my market access. I'm pretty disappointed, but I was wondering what the best step would be to take next... I'm considering either a 1.4.0 reset and just reroot + block OTA (which I neglected to do obviously) or install the new snowball mod that's popping up. Some people seem to like snowball mod, but others are complaining that it's making apps force close (which already seems to be a problem with the root in general).
I have apps and books on it already, but I'm sure I could just regrab them. I've only had the nook since christmas, and I've been on vacation most of the time. Just installed a **** ton of games and grabbed some books (nothing off BN store).
Also, would the snowball mod (which supposedly removes all B&N functionality) make the reader aspect lack at all? Does the nook app on the android marketplace work the same as the nook's default reader?
tldr: reroot or install snowball mod after nook updated to 1.4.1?
Mine did the same thing some time in the last day. I just want to get it back to 1.4.0.
I have the same problem. I rooted my tablet a couple weeks ago. The root thread said that it would stop OTA updates, and I believed it. Unfortunately, whatever they said was blocking OTA didn't work and now I have 1.41.

i got it back to 1.4.0 using the magic sd method, but it was still using the old honeycomb launcher from my previous root. i formatted and deregistered, then applied snowball mod. i don't like it at all... the widgets don't seem fully functional right now, and some apps don't even run when you start them up, SPECIFICALLY THE B&N APP FOR ANDROID. if you want any ereader functionality, stay away from snowball.
if anyone knows an e-reader app similar to the nook app, please post. i'm going to stick with snowball now just for functionality and testing, but i would really appreciate some kind of answer.

This worked for me, but the N button didn't work afterward so I was forced to hard reset and then everything worked fine.
I restored mine to 1.4.0 by the Nook Tablet restore file and then went to root my NK again.
Everything is fine but I can not get NookandZergy to copy files. I get failures on copying files and also denials to chmod commands. I'm still feeling that there has to be a law against B&N changing MY DEVICE! OTAO took me out.

Check to make sure you have the right drivers loaded in Windows device manager and you have the settings correct on the Nook Settings.

[Q] NT looks rooted but it's not. I created a "Mutt"

Both of my computers refused to let me change the drivers in the NT.
I was able to get it from 1.4.1 to 1.4.0 and sideload apps. I got cwm into emmc then got ADB launcher working which helped my disposition. I have no use for B&N home, etc.
By determination rather than knowledge; I have it doing what I have been doing on the NC for a year. I also have the reader from B&N (I missed that on the cm7 NC) without having to see the rest of B&N.
What condition should the NT be in before putting cm7 on? How can I tell if the drivers are right for the new cm7? How can I tell if it’s even rooted. This is so embarrassing! I have this thing working so good but I got there in such a convoluted way!
As of right now, the Alpha links to CM7 has been pulled due to an error where it would brick your device when you tried to format an sd card. I'm a noob in the development area, but from what I can gather, as long you have CWM either internally or on an sd card, you would be able to flash CM7 and wouldn't need to update any drivers. The drivers are necessary for adb especially for Indirect's nook and zergy method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354487) and if you had issues updating the drivers try (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415812) or if you are having trouble seeing the device when you ran the nook&zergy root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363652) this should help you out. Hope this helps.
If it is rooted, what will the specs say? There should be a way to tell.

Using Indirect's Nook&Zergy through your computer, your software version would be 9.9.9 because of the OTA block and for me, the wifi Mac Address on my NT says Unavailable.
From what you have said in your previous post, it seems that you only downgraded to 1.4.0 and then sideloaded apps. So just to clarify, do you have any gapps(google apps like market, talk, calendar) on your device? Do you have Superuser? Also if you have rooted your device, if you use es file explorer (free app) and go to settings you can see if you can mount the emmc (internal memory) which require root and super user permission. Or just try using Button Savior app which requires root as well.
That's what I did. I only sideloaded a few apps to see it it worked. But when restarted it only a couple were there. Then the next time I turned it on I saw something load that I didn't recognize, then I was able to download anything I wanted from the market.
It is not rooted but Superuser and Root Explorer works like my rooted NC. I have cmw from Rom Mgr. Button Savior didn't work.

For the symptoms you mention i think you got caught by the 1.4.1 update. Oh well!. If you have CWM then boot into it and flash back to 1.4.0 using one of the 2 ROM's offered in this page, copy it to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup folder and restore from CWM Backup & restore> restore, select the folder and thats it. What i have mentioned here is in my FAQ too.

[Q] OTA 1.4.2

Hello,
I have a rooted NT on 1.4.1 and this morning it seems the the OTA block did not function because it upgraded to 1.4.2 on it own.
It doens't seem to have affected the root so far, but I haven't explored everthing.
When I click on the NT Hidden settings OTA block i have a message stating :
Missing /system/bin/su
What can I do to block any further ota upgrades. When I rooted I am preety sure that I had made sure that OTA were blocked...
Thanks.
Nathalie
same here
I also looked at my rooted tablet today and it said the 1.4.2 OTA installed.
I had rooted from 1.4.1 using the SD card method.
I had run the OTA blocker but still got 1.4.2
It did not appear to break the root but I had limited time to check things.
Hoping to hear others comments on this issue.
And looking for a OTA block that works.
I tried titanium back-up block at one time but had issues, might just try it again.
This is bummer news. I was hoping I was done with the B&N BS.
install cm7 if you can. It works nice and unlocks the mic

You can root 1.4.2 with any "Root Card" method.

I'm sticking with a rooted 1.4.0 for now. The issue is that I've read the B&N stock apps don't work on CM7. You could download the B&N app from the Market but it doens't have the same functionallity. Some who subscribe to magazines have reported they can't view their subscriptions on the B&N Market app. It seems to be an issue that depends on the magazine as some are OK and some aren't.

None of my magazines are accessible through any B&N Market app (Time, SI, GQ, etc.), but I thought rooting still allows you to access all the vanilla B&N content in addition to Market apps?
EDIT: Whoops, missed the part about CM7. Yes, a different ROM doesn't access the B&N stock apps, as I understand it.
So what should i do because, it seems that i have lost android market, it is asking for a new account. And the email and talk do not work either...
I am kinda lost here because i do not want to brick my NT...
Any suggestions?

The OTA has removed your root access. Which in turn means you can no longer use the packages installed after the root process. Basically refer back to GabrialDestruir's post where he said the 'root card' methods should still work fine. Your best bet IMO is to either install internally, or use an sdcard version of CWM recovery and if you want stock, download and install one of the stock flashable roms in the development section. Else install CM7. Or stay on 1.4.2, your call.

I'm running 1.4.2 and it's all nicely rooted, you just have to used a "Root Card" aka a card which by whatever means adds all sorts of root glory to your device. There are like two or three of these that actually exist for the Nook Tablet, choose one burn the sdcard and follow the instructions and you get a functioning stock root device.

I am trying to get mine to update to 1.4.2, so I can get the fixes from 1.4.1 mainly...and plan to use a root card after the update. But I cannot get mine to update after having done the OTA block. I manually downloaded the update and dropped it in the root of my nt, and its been hours and it hasent applies any update and still says version 9.9.9

So GabrialDestruir, I initially used Albert Wertz root method using an sd card.
Should I re-root my NT using the same method as it is right now or should I un-root it prior rooting it again.
It's not that clear for me yet how I should proceed.
Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken, if your version says 9.9.9, it won't update.
