Unbricking the 4.0 U.S - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Ok, I think our problem is we need the dbdata and cache partitions because I added a dbdat.rfs file I made before bricking to the rom and I no longer get "E:failed mount dbdata (invalid argument)", still get the "E:failed mount /cache (invalid argument)"
So I will paste my dbdata.rfs if someone could post a cache backup.

For now just upload the file you got in the correct name. I will upload the ones you need just give me the commands to retrieve them.

Thats just it, I have no idea how.
I'll ask adamoutler...

Ok i got a hour so if we can get all the files that would be great. After we figure it out i will make a thread on how to restore to stock firmware here and in anythingbuyipod.

Ok, only problem I have about posting my dbdata is; could someone get personal data from that?

I dont think so. Since its the system not the sd card or anything else. Im taking risks posting these things to.

Ok, if you could try:"dd if=/dev/block/bml24 of=/sdcard/cache.rfs

Hyperruner, thanks for all you help btw. So far, in over a month, you have been the only one who has actually wanted to help us with bricked devices. Sorry I can't help you guys tonight since I have to go somewhere. But good luck!

Ok got it now uploading, post your file and ill post mine so i can create a new md5

Uploading now, it will take at least an hour on my internet!

Hold on it says Cannot open or read no such file
Check your command.!!

I will test it first to let you know if it works, then we can make a md5 to post.

Afraid of that, I have no clue what the correct block number is!
Does anyone know how to find out?

I got a extremely easy way of finding out
type
su
mount
and it should tell you the locations

k, but someone else needs to, Im still bricked, remember?

Ok here is what i got so far ima compress it so you can download and try it out ok
factoryfs.rf
zImage
dbdata.rfs
cache.rfs
efs.rfs
I think that is enough let me make it into a md5 file ok. Ima upload it tonight but in the morning i will send you the link and you can try it over the day. Please im trusting you with the dbdata.rfs if there is any personal info please tell me and i will fix it ok. You can cancel the upload. Do you agree to tell me if there is any personal data and to delete it from your device?

K, thank you.

Do you agree to what i just posted about personal data?

That is fine

File will be given to you as soon as im done
Also what is your download speed?

Request: System Dump of full DI01 updated phone.

Someone who has done the whole DI01 update, please dump their system for me, or just the framework folder, apparently the one given to me had the stock android lockscreen patch applied to it lol.
Aside from that, the DI01 deodex works perfect, I opt_png'ed and zip_align'ed all the apk's, as well as the framework-res and twframework-res.
I will also need someone who knows how to sign updater-scripts to open the one attached, and just save it again properly and upload it for me. I am trying to get a flashable CW zip but the darn thing always gives me a status 6 error, which means the CW cannot read the updater script.
Sorry for the n00b question, but what benifit does deodexing provide? Also if there is another software update will I have to readd any .apk's to my /system folder?
Why not just flash your own system back to stock, then run the update, then dump /system? If you'd like an update script that doesn't update modem.bin, I already have one.
Assuming you're updating via CWM, why are you signing the zip? You don't need any signature, just zip the file up.
Is there anything involved in a dump besides just copying the files in /system?

Because I am too lazy to go through all that.
I don't need it signed per say. More like opened, edited, and saved properly. It is said it is best to edit the update script in s Linux based environment which I don't have, but that notepad should suffice, yet when I save it with my notepad, I get the error of cw not being able to read it properly.
I have a fresh phone that just got the D101 update. Just need directions on what if anything is involved beyond just getting the /system directory via adb.

That is all I need. The only things I deodex are the contents of system/app and system/framework.

Try a real editor, like bluefish or something.. Those scripts look like sh#! in notepad.
If no one has done it by tonight, just grab me on IRC and I'll do it under Linux for you.
Make sure you've got the file/directory structure right too.. You can't just throw a script in a zip file, but I'm sure you knew that. Myself and and a few others had the wrong directory structure at first, don't remember what error number that gave us though.. I think it just froze.
OK, how can I get it to you? I can't post links or (I think) files yet.

Just splice up the link like WWW. Website. Com and I will just delete the spaces.

but as to your problem i have experienced this in the past. i was never able to fix the problem with out using odin or the aio toolbar (nomaraider linked to) to revert to stock. It could be something as simple as you having a bad download resulting in corrupted files. if you wish to use odin there is a mirror for all the odin files you will need in my sig.

no you dont need a external card. it goes on root internal sd card
OP, have you checked the noob guide in my signature? It may really help explain the process, and provide any files needed.
If for whatever reason you still dont understand after reading the noobguide you may also wanna pop over to youtube and check out videos from mobiletechvideos they give a good visual to go along with the the noon guide.
On youtube search mobiletechvideos vibrant and a whole bunch of videos will pop up but first read the noon guide or you likely wont understand fully what is going on in the videos.

What version of TWRP are you on?
My only other thought would be that the roms aren't downloading correctly for some reason or another, check the size of the file downloaded to the actual size its supposed to be.
Im using the latest version of TWRP. I flashed the following .img:

My guess is a bad download then, possibly you aren't getting the whole file when you download it?
I'm redownloading see if thats the fix. I initially downloaded directly to phone. I am downloading to computer now and will drop into SD card and see what happens from there. Cross your fingers!!!!!

With the size of the roms for the 3D I would highly recommend always just doing it on your computer. I almost guarantee that is your issue, not 100% sure but not just a shot in the dark.

NO GO!?!?! I wiped and attempted again and nothing. SAME ERROR MESSAGE. Quick question: The background image when choosing to zip to flash, is it a box with question marks? Just wondering maybe something is wrong with my tmrp.
I dont get it and dont know what to do. Should I push the root .zip again to see what happens, if anything?
Please HELP! SOS SOS SOS SOS SOS
All XDA gurus, I call for your powers! I have read the in and outs of the EVO 3D pages and have not found one single person running into the same issue.

Try running the PC86IMG.zip from your bootloader instead of pushing the img file for TWRP. My only guess is that for some reason or another it is something to do with the recovery.
Could you provide me some directions really quick, detailed? Just want to make sure i get this right. Ya dig lol. Man I am so discouraged right now. Im missing my Hero lol. Ouch no, i didnt just say that. nevermind
I have the following directions:
Install as a Flashable Zip? [RECOMMENDED]
1.Download flashable zip from the OP and rename it "PG86IMG.zip" (without the quotes)
2.Place in the root of the sdcard
3.Power off phone (make sure you turn off hot boot or pull the battery when it's off)
4.Power on the phone holding power and volume down
5.Follow the prompts to flash it
6.Delete .zip (PG86IMG.zip) after booting
7.Enjoy
I have read over and over that you will be "prompted" to flash as update or whatever, but I never get this option. I basically just load into hboot. Am I missing a step here or what?

Just read what you posted before I posted that. If you are not being prompted for an update then the file isn't renamed properly. You don't need to add .zip when you rename it because it is already a zip file.
Ok, I made sure the file name was correct. When loading, it slowed up on that .zip but never prompted me to do anything?
Oh and still getting the same message when trying to install ROM. It was different this time around with the slowing up when booting like it did something but it never prompted me to do any action. I really dont know man, I am clueless.

Hmmm so you did update the recovery or still not able to?
Second guessing myself now, root of the SDcard is just anywhere in the SDcard not within a folder, correct? Just want to make sure, trying to over all my bases. Jeeeze, I did not have this type of trouble with my Hero. I am feeling like a Noob but this is challenging me.
It did not prompt me to update the recovery. It simply slowed down during the .zip verification process when it was booting and than it kept going. Nothing more, no prompt for my action to update.

The file just needs to be placed on the SD plain and simple no folders etc.
I still think this is a naming issue because it should prompt you to press the volume up to update. Rename the file to just PC86IMG and see if that works.
Oh and the renaming part is case sensitive.
Ok, I read what it said "wrong zipped image" when the process slowwed down during the boot up
And I named it only "PC86IMG". and than when i look at the file through AstoZip than the it shows as "PC86IMG.zip" The ending (.zip) automatically is added.

Sideload has perms 40755

Does anyone know how to fix a e:/tmp/sideload has perms 40755 issue?
I was flashing a rom and got stuck there.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you!
Whenever I used to get that I'd pull battery do a full wipe and try again. Later I flashed my recovery again and the problem has stopped entirely. I flash ROMs as much as 5 times a day (on a good day).

I haven't seen this error come up before on the q&a board, but I very well could have missed it.
The recovery outputs the details around the error in a /tmp/recovery.log file. Once the error occurs, its best to check this file, /tmp/recovery.log for the details around the error. In order to really troubleshot the specific issue, we'd need a copy of the /tmp/recovery.log and the .zip file being loaded.
Sorry that doesn't directly answer the question, but it will lead to the best technical solution possible! Hope that helps provide some light around recovery .zip flashing troubleshooting!

whenever the recovery first boots, it will create a log file in /tmp/recovery.log. this file will get wiped on reboot. the best time to pull and examine the /tmp/recovery.log file is right after the recovery throws the installing error.
if, for some odd reason, there is a recovery.log in /tmp, you can also try checking /cache/recovery.log.
if you can post the file contents up we can help troubleshoot!
i know i've seen people post back, after attempting to flash 2-3 times the error would disappear. i also know i've seen people post that re-flashing the custom recovery, or flashing an updated version helps clear the issue.
hope that helps!
I had this problem too after trying to flash Viper-Rom RC2 version 4. The problem did not occur during the first installation, but after realizing I forgot to format the data partition, and going back and formatting everything and trying the install again, I had the perms 40755 issue. It appears that having a rom that tweaks the file system and permissions will cause this issue on occasion. After pulling the battery like triscuit suggested, it worked just fine. Unfortunately I scoured the entire phone for a recovery.log file and it was nowhere to be found. We may not have a technical reasoning for this issue exactly, but triscuit's workaround appears to take care of the problem.

This will take care of any issues with installing the OTA:

So I'm getting the preinstall folder fail. I downloaded from the link above, but i can't get the contents into my preinstall folder. When i paste using root explorer, it acts like it's completing the action, but nothing happens. It is mounted r/w and i've tried changing permissions. Sorry if it's something really basic i'm missing.
*nevermind, got it. The folder was at max capacity.
