It's happened again - I have no volume on my xda (I can only hear with the headset plugged in). This is the second time now, and it's off to the shop for another replacement (at least I get a new casing - I can forget about the huge scratch last time I dropped it!)
I'd be extremely interested if anyone else has had this with European O2 xda's. Maybe there is a design flaw in the headset socket that wears out (yeah, but in less than a month?). I do listen to music on the train to and from work, so it gets plugged/unplugged twice a day.

Every cloud has a silver lining - They didn't have any 32mb xda's in stock, so they gave me a 64mb one. Hurrah!
This is now my third handset!
Other good things are it has 3.14 ROM, radio stack 4.08 - the splash screen to start up looks very XP'ish, and the default today screen is the XP Bliss wallpaper.
Apart from that, it looks pretty much the same. I'll let you know if anything else behaves differently.
Looks like I'll have to work out how to break the sound so that everyone can go and get a free upgrade!

I took my ameo apart the other day to fix a speaker and noticed that it had i slot for a vibrating alert. so I took apart my old dead o2 xda ii and the motor fitted in perfectly, trouble is the ameo has no software to switch it on so its useless on the whole. does anyone know of a way to add this missing software? as it is built into the rom it would be hard to add seeing how its never had one anyway.

This was brought up in a previous thread. But i've seen in the past something that enabled you to change profile, with the option to turn vibrate on adn off. I can't remember where I seen it though. Do a search maybe you'll come up luckier than me.

But this doesn't mean it can really activate it...
its strange, its all setup for the motor inside, its as if they changed there mind last moment. it would be handy in my job to have it working, I guess the only real way is to take the software out of another rom with one and install it into the athena rom. i will keep searching.

wisebar is just the wallpaper for the real software behind I think, I dont think it is much trouble to add the button but its the rest. just because the slot and track is there, maybe some of the components are missing also. But im guessing here

I think that that is the most likely answer. I'm sure it would be OK at first but could damage things in the end,
I also remember reading about this somewhere. Seems like someone said vibrate was going to be incorporated, but was not because of the microdrive. I saw a vibrating motor that was only 3mm x 11mm. Maybe less vibrate would have less effect on the drive. Software though, hmmmmmmmm.......

The Better solution and answer provided some time ago was to make a recording of another device vibrating (i.e.: sitting on a desk or table) then using that audio file as the ringtone. It won't shake the innards of your Athena and if anyone in a meeting or where ever hears it, they wouldn't likely know the difference.

I just don't understand people who say the vibrating sound thing is a solution. If the pda is in your pocket, how does the vibrate sound let you know you have a call. You do not even hear it. It is the actual vibration that would let you know you have a call. i would give up the microdrive in a second for a real vibrate mode!
And besides hearing a vibrating phone in a meeting is just as bad as hearing it ring. So the idea would be to notify you that you have a call and others would not hear it.

If you are putting Athena in your pocket, you must be a BIG person or wear oversized clothes. IMHO Athean is not a pocket device (too big), but having the sound of a vibrating phone with the volume towards low is only audible very near the device. I would agree with your comment on being annoying if it were on loud. Perhaps those who absolutely want to vibrate should look towards the X7510 which has the 16GB flash instead of uDrive, and work on the hack to make it available as a ring setting.
Try to use standard HTC Home - it has possibility to choose vibra tone ( but I'm not shure if it send signal to vibra)

As it happens, I'm 6 foot 3 and weigh around 23 stone (325 lbs) so i meet both of those criteria. I have no problem with fitting this thing in my pocket.
Still, i don't do it cos i don't want to forget it's in there and crack the screen if i sit on it! Personally, vibration is not a problem for me, cos if I'm in a meeting or somewhere I can't answer the phone, i put it on silent and deal with everything afterwards.
Just because I CAN be contacted at any time on my mobile, doesn't necessarily mean that I WANT to be contacted.....

I almost posted this yesterday and didn't, but I feel the need to back up eagle 1. A recording of a vibrating phone is not a solution. I need vibrate here: in the car with the radio turned up, in a meeting, in a movie or performance theater. A quiet buzzing recording will be missed every time. There are times when I must be available, like when the kids are home with a babysitter.
The fact that HTC designed vibrate into our phones and then left it out is a real shame. I too would have given up the MD to get vibrate.
The Athena fit's quite nicely in my suite jacket pocket, or, indeed, the inside pocket of my leather jacket - either way, when I'm out I often can't hear the ring but would be able to feel a vibrate.

Actually the Athena fits pretty good in a coat pocket and even better if you ditch the keyboard and cover. When I am out I do this along with carrying the Style-i.
raskell - that's why I bought the Jabra BT8010 which has vibrate, although the motor is so small I sometimes miss it when its in the pocket of my jeans. Not as good as an industrial-strength vibrate would have been built-in to the Athena.
Hey, the more vibrating accessories you can get, the better your chance of not missing a call!
I would suggest making a Mortscript with a vibrate command. I'm not sure what component Mortscript relies on to vibrate but it seems it's incorporated into itself.
Now, my question is did you see any place to slip in an earpiece?
Hello! New guy here and in searching the web for some answers, I found this site and it looks like a good place to ask some questions
I'm wondering if anybody else finds the speakerphone to be unacceptable? Forget about using it an a car... especially one with an aftermarket exhaust And, even in a fairly quiet room you still have to have it fairly close to you to be able to hear it even with the volume all the way up. At first I thought it was a defective unit and so did the people at the Alltel store (new phone and they are not familiar with it) so they swapped it out for a new one. Got the SAME results and even the guy at Alltel was very disappointed with the quality of the speakerphone. I ended up calling Alltel and asking one of their people about it and they went and got a Touch Pro, tried it, and was like "Wow, that does suck!". LOL!
So, I'm not seeing very much here about how the speakerphone is basically unusable so am wondering if it possible that I got two bad phones in a row and the Altell tech guys have a bad one too?
While this isn't a dealbreaker for me, I do like to use it every so often and can't believe such an expensive phone has such a poor speakerphone!
If this is "just the way it is" is there anyway you smart guys on here which do the hacking can boost up the volume a little???

I'm setting up a Class-Action website soon if HTC dont recall all there HTC Touch Pro's and fix (Put) High Performance Speakers in for the Speaker phone Speaker and of the Speaker when put to ear.

I can pick up a 25.00 phone and the speakers are way better
I too have the one from Alltel. The speakerphone is weak; however, I don't use it much. When speakerphone is turned off, it is OK.
What I do use is a Motorola H500 and that is very weak as well. Not sure why.
Yeah, this is very disappointing. I thought I could "live" with a poor speakerphone because like cagarn, I don't use it often. It is more the point of it though... it is an expensive phone and if I WANT to use the speakerphone I WANT it to work!
Now, I'm having another problem... the GPS doesn't work worth a crap. I downloaded Google Maps and it was always stuck looking for satellites. Would always show 0 (zero). Thought maybe there was a problem with Alltel "messing" with something so programs like this wouldn't work and you'd be forced to spend $9.99 a month on Alltel's GPS service so, for troubleshooting purposes, I activated Alltel's service and it said "weak signal". Went out to the middle of a large yard and after trying a few times got the Alltel service to lock on and display my location. I then closed out that program and opened Google Maps and DID get it to work too. Since then though, I've not been able to get it to work even in the middle of a large parking lot and not even being in my car??? I went to the local Alltel to swap out the phone again because it seems like the GPS is defective but there were out of the phone. The lady had a personal use HTC Diamond so we tried Google Maps on her phone in the middle of the parking lot and it wouldn't find any satellites either??? What's going on with this? Going to look through the forums here and see if this too is a problem with this phone. Sigh. If this is just the way the GPS is, what the heck is the point of a GPS receiver that is so weak it can't be used in a car and only sometimes in the middle of a large field??? It is getting to the point were, even though I really like the phone and the killer resolution of the screen, I'm about ready to just go back to my trusty Treo 700wx!

I normally have EV but sometimes 1X. But, the problem isn't with the data part... the problem is it won't acquire any satellites.
I did notice something weird though... I ran a GPS Test program and it showed the GPS working then opened Googlemaps and it worked then too??? Since then I've been experimenting and the phone will sometimes get 12 satellites and other times I can't get it to connect to any and this is even standing still outside in good weather! I'm also having an issue with the signal (regular phone signal) varying greatly on the phone from no bars to maybe three bars while the phone is staying the same place. It was doing this at the Alltel store and all the other phones in there had a steady strong signal. They are going to replace the phone because of the GPS and weird signal issues. Hopefully this one will work
Oh, and there is a user on another board named badboy8813 who has developed a cab file which increases the volume of the phone. I have tried a "half" boost fix and now going to try the full boost fix and see if that makes it any better. The half one worked pretty good but I'd rather have it real loud and turn it down if needed

I have tried both versions and both do what they say. The full boost version is NICE and LOUD Speakerphone still sucks though. It just isn't a good speakerphone speaker and I'm afraid nothing short of replacing the speaker will "really" fix this problem. The above definitely helps but it is very unfortunate such a nice and expensive phone uses such a cheap and crappy speakerphone speaker. My cheap old and free Motorola T262 speakerphone blows this thing out of the water
Yup i just spent 600+ on this phone with alltel because I'm still in contract, and the main issue i'm having is the crappy speaker phone as well.
oh and yea i had to use the volume boost which is pretty cool to bring the volume up as well but it only affected the regular volume, not the speakerphone, not that i noticed.

We understand that it is important you receive all the information to best utilize your device. First I would suggest that you turn up both your System and your Ring volumes. Once you do this and are on a call with someone, it is suggested to speak and listen from the back of your phone. When the device goes into speakerphone mode, it switches its main speaker to the back speaker. This should improve your devices sound quality when using speakerphone.

Wow is right. Sad. HTC isn't too "up" on their different version phones from the different providers. I read parts of the HTC Touch Pro pdf on their website before I got mine from Alltel so was familiar with their "standard" phone. When I was having speakerphone problems I called HTC tech support. The guy insisted the speaker was on the BACK of the phone. I relied "yes, it is on the back of the phone in the pics listed on your website but on MY ALLTEL phone there are two slits in the top the sound comes out of. He tried to agrue with me a little until I said "Listen, I have no fancy pattern on the back of my phone and no little grille looking thing. If you take the cover off there is nothing for speaker sound to go through and only clear SOLID plastic for the camera and light and if I cover up the slits on the top with my finger the speakerphone volume basically goes away and gets very muffled... the sound comes out of the top of my phone for sure." He replied back with something like "Well, it is supposed to come out the back." To that I replied, "Thank you for your assistance. Good bye."
Yep, I got about as much help from them as you did. They HAVE to know this speakerphone is basically useless. Why are they trying to play it off like you're an idiot? The worst part is that I asked if there was a "fix" for this and they replied no fixes and none being planned. Lovely. Maybe I'll have to buy an old phone on eBay for about $2 and solder in one of the GOOD speakers in my "state of the art" phone. LOL!

I don't know for sure but from what I've been reading it seems like the speaker is jus not that great.
I just downloaded and started playing with a program called Diamond Tweak which allows you to use the equalizer for everything (not just when headphones are plugged in)... plus it does a ton of other stuff. I'm thinking if I can get the EQ tweaked in for standard TALKING then that might fix a lot of the problems. Might want to check it out...

Sent the following email to HTC and here's the thread that follows, thought some people might be interested in this:
My Rezound is having a weird high pitched whining sound in the background whenever the capacitive buttons are lit up on the bottom of my phone. So if I'm outdoors in a sunny area, I have no problems, but if I'm using the phone in the dark, I have to turn off the screen (which turns off the lights on the capacitive buttons), and then the whining goes away, but obviously this doesn't solve the problem if I need to use the screen. Is there any way to turn off the lights on the capacitive buttons using a menu option or something? Also, have there been a lot of reports of this whining noise in the background?

(I found out how to resolve the issue, I installed a custom ROM that allows me to change the brightness of the capacitive buttons, and the problem has gone away).

Thank you for your response. I am glad to hear that you resolved this issue, however it is unfortunate that it took you a custom ROM to do so. I can confirm Mike that HTC has identified the issue of the high pitched noise on the HTC Rezound as a software issue that will be corrected with the next update. This issue is presently being investigated and our developers are working hard at creating a maintenance release for this device. Because you now have a custom ROM you will not receive a direct notification when the FOTA (forced over the air) update gets released. When the update is made available Mike, you can check our web site at HTC from time to time to see if it has been released as a manual update for your phone, should you want to return to the stock OS. The backlight of the keys is also something that some of our users have asked about. I will pass along your feedback on this issue to our developers, and it's possible that in future updates there may be an option to disable the backlight manually using a menu option. It's definitely a good idea, so I hope that this becomes a standard feature in future models from HTC. If you need additional information on the Rezound, you may wish to check your user manual from HTC . Please use the binocular icon on the left side of the manual to enter key words. Using this method helps you to locate all references to the topic you are researching. I deeply regret any inconvenience this may have caused, and I hope that your custom ROM allows you to continue to use and enjoy your HTC Rezound to its full potential. I don't think it's unfortunate I had to use a custom ROM to solve the problem, but I understand what you mean by that. I still hear the noise when the screen comes on or goes off, but at least it isn't constant now. I'm glad to know that HTC is aware of the issue though and is rolling out a fix in the next update (which I'm hoping will be the official Ice Cream Sandwich update). Also, being able to control the backlight on the capacitive buttons is really awesome, even if it wasn't the solution to removing the high pitched noise. It's great when I'm watching Netflix at night in bed and I don't want the lights to distract me from what I'm watching, I just put it on the "dim" setting. I am extremely happy with my Rezound, I'm really hoping that Google allows HTC to make the next Nexus phone, because I know you guys would make something awesome (unlike the current Galaxy Nexus which has a sub-par camera, non-removable SD card, and cheaper construction in comparison to the Rezound). HTC has won a long time customer, I can't wait to see what you guys do next!

My squealing sound only happens when I have an audio cable connected from my rezound to my car's headunit and when I have the USB cable connected to my phone. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm using the official car charger or using a standard USB cable to charge via a USB port on my headunit. IIRC it happened on GB and it also happens on ICS :-/ I think it's actually the issue of the audio cable being crappy because I don't notice it while using headphones.
That's crazy I haven't heard of anyone getting a reply fron htc before that's sweet man. Although there emails were about when the ics update would be out or how and they were they went getting one (evo4g) lol

That is a seperate issue that is caused by your cars electrical system. I have both issues and I believe they are due to the same problem from different sources. Both are ground interference/feedback, one from the car, the other from the phone itself. This phone just seems to be really sensitive to interference. Thank god it goes away in both cases when the music/audio starts playing or it would have to be returned.

Yes, I noticed I get an extreme amount of alternator whine when charging in the car and have the phone plugged into the aux input of the radio. It's like they forgot to put ground filters in the audio circuit.

mine went from whining, which I tolerated, to much much worse sounds. Crackle, pop, L/R channels intermittently cutting out, etc. If I even touched the plug on the phone side, crackle city. It's almost like the audio input jack has a loose connection to the board. Anyway, Verizon was super cool about it. Called, explained I've tried the usual software fixes (updates, factory reset, etc) since I know they'd want me to try that first...(which I have, multiple times, for different reasons). Less than 5 minutes on the phone today, and an hour later I had a FedEx tracking number showing it'll be here tomorrow.
I've always been super impressed with Verizon's replacement policies. They've never done me wrong.

Temp fix for Rezound high pitched whine
Not sure if this has been brought up as a "temp" solution, but wanted to share as it’s made my Rezound much better. I saw this on the HTC Community forums by James on 01/18/12. I am not affiliated with the app in any way.
On my Rezound (stock), the static was fixed with the last OTA update, but I still had the high pitched whine when the screen was on (and sometimes a little bit after it went off). Downloaded the app the guy mentioned and I don't get the whine anymore. No more back-lit buttons while it’s enabled, but the sound is great again. Hopefully HTC will have a fix for what seems like interference from the buttons being lit. FYI – The shortcut on the screen acts like a toggle after the initial setup, so it’s easy to enable/disable.

Well I figured since they now actually support unlocking their phones on their website they KNOW that people running custom ROMs. I probably would have mentioned it anyway though.

That's good info for those still on stock, maybe you can contact the developer of the app and ask them to add an option to change the backlight from off to dim instead, it works great for me on CleanROM. Or you can just unlock, root, and install CleanROM
So at the moment I have a couple of phones that I really want to buy and the XS is one of them. It is the best financially apparently but there are a few things I need to know. Hopefully y'all can help me. Thanks a lot !
1) Does the white version attract dirt easily and if so is it easy to wipe it off? I know I can just get a case for it but since on the front there is a large area under the capacitive buttons and Im gonna touch that area a lot so I want to know. (Mini rant: why does it have so many visible seams, make the phone look a tard cheap)
2) How is the yellow screen issue? Has it been improved/ fixed? If I have it do you reckon it's gonna be easy to have Sony fixed it? I live in Australia btw
3) Battery life? I saw a lot of people having issues with the ICS update. My normal usage is 2-3 hours checking social networking sites, web-browsing, 2-3 hours of music, probably 15 minutes of games. Do you reckon if it's gonna be enough to last me?
4) Does this phone have any issue with getting coverage? In my house the coverage is terrible for most carriers. I had an HTC sensation and my mom has an s2 and they seem to not be able to hold on to signal any long.
5) So what do the colours look like w/out the Mobile Bravia Engine? I reckon I wont turn it on to preserve battery but I want to know how much it's gonna affect the quality of the screen. And in so many videos the colours do look a bit washed out...
6) How's the GPS? I dont drive but I use apps that use GPS.

1) I have the white one. It does attract a quite high quantity of dirt. The back is easy to clean. Just use a smooth humid cloth on it. For the lens, it's easier to clean it removing the back cover. The Xperia Logo on the bottom, and on the Camera, HDMI and USB logos on the sides also get dirty quite easily. The dust enters the little "depression" and get stuck in there. If someone knows a good way to clean this, please let me know.
2)It's been quite a long time since the start of the production. Until batch 14, almost all devices had it, on batches 15 and 16 it almost has gone. We must be on batches 30 or 40 by now, so no need to worry.
3)I think it's enough for me, and should be enough for you. Check the battery thread, and look at my posts to see my results.
4)Well, my carrier sucks for that. I badly can enter a corridor on my school without loosing signal. But I also had this with my old X10 MP. I think the coverage is good (not so good now, as I'm using Turkey FW, with a different baseband, but it doesn't make it unusable)

About the batches, do you know how to check what batch it is? Since in Australia the Xperia S doesnt sell very well (I know it since Im working for a phone company now), so I reckon there are a lot of old stock sticking around.

The only way I know is to open the back cover of the phone. On it, there is white sticker with info about the phone. On the right side, there is the phone model (LT26i), another info and something like this, 12Wxx, where xx is the batch, W is week and 12 is year. Mine is W10, so I have the yellow spot. Sadly can't trade as Sony Brazil is horrible.
The problem, I meant is that the Bravia Engine isn't working for most on the ICS update.

Hey there,
1. I have the black xps, my friend owns the white version. It does attract quite a bit of dirt but using a case should solve the problem. (recommend nillkin hard case)
2. Yellow screen issue - my first xps had the defect, returned it to the service centre within a week of purchase and got a replacement in 2 weeks. The batch I now have is 12w16. So if it's possible for you to find out the production batch, I recommend you get anything beyond w14.
3. Battery life - immensely dropped after the ics update. Gb battery life was amazing (I'm referring to stock firmware). The issue is due to the phone unable to get enough deep sleep when the screen is off. (culprits being - alarm manager and power saver app, they keep restarting). On stock ics, with 3G constantly on, Wifi for a few hours, display on for about 3 hours, music for 30mins,auto sync on throughout - i get about 12-15 hours of battery life. With auto sync off, I get 3-4 hours more battery life.
4. About network signal etc. The phone doesn't have any issues. But if you're in a low coverage area, it's going to drain your battery even further. One bug I've noticed is that after a few hours or sometimes a day, my data connectivity just refuses to work, in spite of it showing active with the H/3G symbol. Only solution is a restart.
5. I keep my bravia engine off most of the time, honestly I can't really tell the difference cause the screen is one of the best in the market. Love the clarity.
6. Gps - no issues. Fast and accurate.

1. I used to own a XS before upgrade to the Acro S. A white one to be exact. I used a case all the time so there was little dirt to be worry about. I'm sure you'll feel the same. The 3 touch buttons on the front was horrid though.
2. If you buy a brand new one around this time, I doubt you will ever encounter this issue.
3. Battery do fine for me. It's about 3 hours of screen time, not very impressive but not bad at all.
4. Coverage is good. I've ever lost any signal.
5. You'll see a bit different in color, less vivid to be exact but you'll get used to it in tme.
6.GPS is fast and accurate.

1)I have the older batch, so am having a yellow tint. Will send it for repair when I do have the time. As long as the bootloader is unlocked sony will gladly repaired it for you.
2)sony has said that bravia engine dont impact battery life, so u don't really need to turn it down
3)GPS is really really good, even without A-GPS( data off). Lock into position in seconds!. Must be the whole glonass thing,as other droids I use with data off,will need some time to few minutes to find me.
4)battery life,well as bad as most droids, 5 hours of screen time would drain it almost flat. But fast charging work as advertise, so plug it iN whenever possible,30 minits of charging could get it up around 50%.
5) call signal are really good, well at least I can comform it's better than samsung note,gio & s2.
