Official VZW ICS OTA by end of the month? - Motorola Droid RAZR

I was just in my Verizon store to get a case and see what the Nexus was all about (it felt cheap and plasticity, and is not as appealing as the RAZR.) While there I asked the rep about an issue with it not showing all of my contacts, but when they call it displays their name. She said there was a MAJOR update coming for the RAZR by the end of the month. My question was if it was for bug fixes or ICS, she said ICS! I'm not really going to mark my calendar, but it would be nice, and that also falls into Motos own 6 week from source claim. even if it is bug fixes, it is nice to see the support!
While there, we started talking about rooting and roming, I asked if she had the Fastboot files, she went and checked her "flashing computer" and said they were not available to her. Not sure if its because it is not a big enough store, but it is one of the bigger stores in the area.
It was nice to see a VZW rep be interested in rooting and roming, and not the instant shoot down that I have come to expect.

I tend not to trust sales reps, but you got me salivating... Lol

Anyways would be great to get ICS for this great phone sooner rather than later

The pending soak update is 57 MB. It's definitely not ICS.

I'll believe it when I see it.

She didn't know what she was talking about. Motorola themselves have said that it might be 6 months away. Any update that is this month is going to be 4 bug fixes only.

I confirmed with my friend that works at Moto Mobility. ICS is not ready to push to the RAZR.
He did say they were having better results than expected....but even he didn't have a solid date on when it would be ready.
He did say there was an update coming, but that it wasn't "major" it's just some tweeks to security and a couple "other" things.

Can you say gullible???

GB 2.3.5.

LOL good luck. I doubt it is coming anytime soon. I say march or april the earliest.

If they can cram ICS in 57 MB.

It's probably an update with some bugs fixed, maybe a new radio, enhancements......because the Thunderbolts are getting a small update too at about 36mb.

Surely not in '13!! The update that leaked at least should tide us until Spring or Summer when they actually release it. If it isn't out by then it will be a big disappointment for me.
Spoke to a Verizon tech today regarding webtop and he let me know that his razr is running the ICS official. He also has a copy of the CM9 ruining on another RAZR. Seriously. The reps at the corporate store I was at were when they saw an unbranded, GSM RAZR; I was in there for the car dock.
Icecream sandwich update should be very quick on motorola phones as google owns the company now
and the way they have released i think 4 updates already within 1 month is very good for customers so ICS cant be that far away id imagine

i know my way around the tech parts of a phone. been around them as a developer and fan for some time. Verizon tech wasn't B.S.'ing me. I have no basis for spreading rumours. I immediately saw my error with this post on the website and have asked for it to be taken down just minutes after i posted it. But its taken on a discussion point because of the title. I will change that if i can.

I know someone who works for Verizon corporate (not retail). Their techs definitely do have access to pre-release updates. It's how Verizon begins testing things before pushing them out to the public. He told me that the main reason Verizon takes its time with updates is that they test everything very thoroughly before release to limit calls to customer service once the OTA is pushed out. They want to make sure as many bugs as possible are squashed ahead of time. It's a wise angle to take, but doesn't leave "normal consumers" feeling all that great about things.
And what about retail version, who test it if there is no carrier? I suppose Motorola itself, now compare its speed (and stability) with your carrier - who will win?

yea im going to do the same thing once my phone comes in. i just signed up for sprint today and my phone should arrive by saturday. last motorola android i owned was the cliq and it took them well over a year with the same promise to bring 2.0 or 2.1 to that phone from 1.5 after several delays. cyanogenmod had a stable release for that phone several months before the official update came out. by then i didnt even have the phone anymore lol switched to the mytouch3g slide.
By the time ICS is released in Q3......Jelly Bean should be out in the alpha stage
...just saying...
Maybe it will get here a bit sooner. At least this newer info will get rid of all the many posts about "Will Photon get ICS?". Very annoying. I never doubted for a second the Photon wouldn't get ICS. Google wants this on all devices capable of running it and have said so from the beginning. ICS is just slow rolling out it seems.
Anyways, for those of us that need full functionality CM9 isn't an option yet. One of the great things about the Photon is HDMI out and Webtop feature. I am not willing to lose those and as I understand there is no way to activate Webtop on CM9 yet. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. However, 4g I can live without (not in my area) and having the camera working now is a great step to final.

Ok, let me clarify. We all know Al will never be president, therefore, I believe although announced, Moto will pull the plug at some point before Q3.
Next, the AT&T note has GB, the Sprint Note, expected this summer, is expected (again expected!) to have ICS more over to top AT&T!

Sure, just like I got WiMAX 4G! Lets be honest, who here keeps a phone more than a year? If they pushed this to Q2 maybe, but for us to wait with all the new hardware coming out WITH ICS, I'm surprised Moto made the announcment, they could have saved the development work, but we will see I'm sure. And even with me getting the Note, I'm not getting rid of the Photon anytime soon. like 2013 Q2 if my income tax is late, haha!
As bad as the SGS2 is on Sprint, you better take a long look at the Note before you jump on it. Ill never own another Samsung device. They have officially lost me at this point. Im waiting for HTCs next big thing. They seem to be the best of the bunch from what we have to chose from.

I do.
It is a business phone so it is up to Sprint on when they will allow us an upgrade. If they are now on a 2-year upgrade plan for even businesses than I will for sure have the Photon for over a year. We can't afford to keep upgrading otherwise.
Also, wasn't it you who was just complaining in another thread about not having WiMax and "what if I want to keep my Photon for 10 years?" point? If you don't keep a phone for more than a year why was that even a valid point on your end?
Not trying to be harsh with these questions, just observations and curiousity mainly.

Last I checked, there isn't actually anything new here, the page has said CDMA is To Be Announced and GSM is Q2 for ages.
Honestly, I suspect CDMA ICS is going to deployed at more or less the same time, and has been presented this way to stop people blaming Verizon directly for any potential delays. Most of the other regions have the RAZR offered through multiple carriers, meaning it's less a specific carrier's 'fault'.
Why do we need official ICS when we have great working ICS builds already? Its not as though it's going to unlock the bootloaders.

An official ICS kernel with working hardware acceleration would be nice, for one. As would less brutally short battery life.

ummm? Our bootloader is locked because of sh*tty moto, so what we really need is an updated kernel that doesn't suck so much, including updated drivers, hardware acceleration, and a ROM that doesn't have major bugs like the front facing camera actually working.
If ICS doesn't come out by the 1st of May then I'm dropping this phone for something else. I can see now why so many people hate Motorola. The going price on eBay is pretty high for the maxx, so it'll be worth it from my point of view considering I got the 2 year discounted price of $250 an they're currently selling at $500+

It's not about bootloaders, and I'm pretty tired of hearing about bootloaders, honestly.
Nothing works better than an OTA from a manufacturer. NOTHING. You can port all you want, but nothing will work 100% unless the manufacturers release an official OTA. Believe me, I know. As a recovering Flashaholic. My RAZR is stock, outta the box, but the PROMISE that was made by Motorola was that we would be the first to receive the ICS update, and obviously that's been broken...

Okay well coming from the Droid Incredible, where the bootloader wasn't locked down and developers could easily update kernels and radio's, I highly disagree. Stock ROM was laggy and the kernel from the OTA was poorly updated with old drivers. With it unlocked, developers were able to constantly add the latest and fastest drivers, latest linux codes, optimizing performance and battery life, and adding a few amazing features such as call recording and various governors.
So what I'm getting at is the bootloader being locked IS a big deal for performance, battery life and features for your phone.
But ya I'm not expecting the bootloader to be unlocked with ICS (is anyone expecting that?) but the update will mean that moto will be updating their kernel and add things to the phone that developers otherwise can't do because of the bootloader being locked, and that's that part that gets everyone annoyed, and of course it gets even worse then they push back that update without even an estimate on when it will be done.

But even knowing the fact that I am owning a GSM phone I would rater wait a few months and have an os that is perfect and mostly bugfree. Seems more important to me than that they rush it and give us an os with bugs they could have taken out just by waiting a few weeks/months.
Just a thought.

@ Forum member "TheShackSpecialits" this is just for you!. I stated with EOL Sprint will never let us get ICS. You stated we will because manufactures control OTA updates. I then gave you several reasons why they dont. This, my friend is for you!!
Not only did this article verify what I said, It also gave Motorola a grade of "D", the lowest of ANY cell manfacture for doing OTA Upgrades. This has to bring up the question, who s**t on who?

Sent from my Photon 4G using Tapatalk
I'm confused about your logic on this and frankly it seems that your "I'll show you that we're screwed" attitude seems to make this irrelevant. But for the sake of anyone else reading this and getting utterly depressed that our amazing phone may not be getting ICS... well that's just incorrect. This page shows that ICS is currently in development (as opposed to "evaluation & planning") for the photon and is in the category of phones with at least 1GB of RAM, which I would like to consider promising.
https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
Also the main complaint from the article you linked to was about delayed updating of the X2. I don't even know how much longer that's been out than the Photon b/c it's seems like a LONG time.
Anywho, stop being so d**n negative!
Plus we have awesome devs that have gotten us cm9 already, and stable much earlier than most phones so I guess I don't understand the severity of the problem if you're on this site.

@ricky, read back S-L-O-W-L-Y. I have no issues with my Photon, none at all. I might jump for a new EVO, but thats beside the point. I have no problems with the Developers here, they do, and continue to do a great job. But, my Photon is GREAT.
If all of you take my first suggestion here, In my OP in the link about, my issues is with Sprint and the way they handled business! How do you put a EOL of a device thats not even a year old, but you continue to support the original EVO (although threated a few times to shelve it?) If it breaks in May, you do not get another Photon, you get a compatable device. yes, CM9 is great! if it breaks then, then what, you rooted it, so that's blown out the water.
The second link was to clarify 2 things. 1. if Sprint is going to EOL the Photon, they are not going to support it, PERIOD! (It they keep that promise). Therefore, the Q3 promise is, for the most part, dead. That user responded by telling me the motorola controls OTA upgrades. As that article stated, reguardless of carrier or device, these are controlled by the carrier, not the manfuacture.
Lastly, to comment on my last sentence in this original post, who s**t on who? Did Sprint crap on Motorola with not enough advertisement, support, ect. Or did Motorola crap on Sprint by making Development promises they could not keep and Sprint finally said "F" it?
Learn how to name your threads appropriately, please.
Moto said rollout starts in Q3 - Q3 has NOT started yet!
And I don't care at all "who did what to who". It's just a friggin' phone man!! I've got a dozen gathering dust in the bottom of my closet. Along with a dozen computers I've given to charities, friends and families over the years.
dsims7_2000 if you are that angry and bitter why dont you go to Verizon or ATT. I would like to see ICS on the photon to but no one ever geranteed that it would get it. If it does then thats great if not oh well we still have cm9.
Into y'all feelings much? .... Welp this is my last few posts for the photon as I have a epic touch too and going to be there for awhile.. Look guys I been here for awhile like back since the winmo days HTC cingular 8125 and tmo wing.. And since cm3 ppl been just needy complaining upset at things that shouldn't matter.. Look it's just a phone g1 users was messed over hero users and a few more.. Just appreciate the phone as is cause if GB was the last OS update these threads wouldn't be happening!

Dude! Calm the F&#K down!
Moto has it officially listed as rolling out in Q3. Sprint is EOL-ing certain devices early just to make sure that all WiMax hardware is cleared out before LTE comes in so there's no confusion.
If you wanted WiMax to stick around and grow, you should've rallied more people to Sprint. Instead, everyone wanted the iPhone or they thought they could "hear everybody now" on Verizon. Now they're stuck in contracts with Data caps and insane bills. Meanwhile, we still have comparatively nice bills and unlimited data but we're all stuck with having to switch over to LTE and endure a massive network overhaul. *Shrug*
Really, the most confusion seems to be understanding what EOL actually means. It doesn't mean your phone is done with updates or that if you call support they won't help you, it mostly just means they're done selling/swapping it.
I suggest the OP re-read his linked article. It's not Sprint/USCC that's doing a crappy job of rolling out ICS, it's Motorola, which completely contradicts his claim. The carriers are certainly involved with testing and giving the final approval for OTA updates (and EOL status has nothing to do with that), but the gruntwork behind updates is done by the manufacturers.
FTR, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that it takes Motorola this long to do updates. Their dev team and code infrastructure must be absolutely horrendous considering that a small group of amateur enthusiasts are able to produce mostly working ICS ROMs within a month or two of the release of ICS -- without manufacturer-provided driver updates.

I agree very well said
I have no worries about Motorola. As was stated before, Motorola said they are developing the update for the Photon and it should be out by Q3. I'm not worried about Sprint choosing to EOL the Photon. We are going to get ICS and I'd imagine that even if Sprint choose not to support ICS that Motorola would leak it to the community. You think all these SBFs were by accident?
OG epic still getting updates! I'll leave it at that

It's crap like this thread that has led me to ignore the OP.

Seriously.......i could respond to this but i would restate what everyone has said thus far. I work in S&R and there is a reason I said everything I did. Your still very wrong and its frustrating that your still on this track with multiple employees and contributors telling you , that you are very wrong. I wish i could pull the i-connect and cebu articles to prove you wrong but i cant because thats a violation of policy. You have provided me with alot of entertainment but now im going back to lurking unless im contributing. This whole thread and previous thread make me sad. To loki and other members thanks for your contributions.

Sprints the reason you aren't getting it. It is Sprints phone, Motorola just made it for them. Like Foxconn makes iphones for Apple. If Sprint Eol the Photon and ends support also. There will be no official is. Im pretty sure Sprint can sue them if they released an oat update on Sprints network and their tailor made phone they paid to have made.

I juat whent over to droidrazr.com and did the leak. Works great if you dont want to wait
wow you guys need to relax. i did search before posting and i found the exact same link as the second post did. only problem is my device wasnt listed in the region. it says droid razr from usa is getting update on q2 2012. i have a droid razr from canada. so i had doubts. then i found out motorola droid razr is actually called motorola razr in canada. unfortunatly after i posted this thread.
You posted the? We answered
yea you answered lol others just attacked me
thx btw
Seriously, you asked if the DROID RAZR would get ICS....last time I checked that means it could be any DROID RAZR no matter where it is. You didn't mention anything about Canada or any other region. This has been discussed many times, wasn't trying to attack but it seems like a wasted thread when you ask if the RAZR will get ICS when its a pretty easy topic to find when you search
i guess my mistake was being too general

End of July, huh? Based on what? So now you're predicting Q3? Motorola was updating ICS like crazy for awhile, but seemed to have stopped after .206....I predict it to be the final build and it will be released before end of June, probably sooner.
Honestly if you did a basic search you would've seen Motorola's official release for ICS for our Razrs among other Motorola devices for Q2. There are tons of threads pertaining to ICS release dates as well as rumors of its impending release.

Just guessing. I am on ics 206 and it has a few little bugs. If they don't catch it then they may release it but I feel it needs more work. I hope they do drop it in June but I dunno. Verizon is your problem...not moto. The builds are already done. They should clean up another one before an ota drops.
Look at the nexus. Needs plenty of bug fixes being on 402 and 404 has been built since??? February and still no ota. I don't know what more confusing, the fact that the manufacturers are making the update or that the carriers are deciding when lol.
Manufacturers should be manufacturing and supporting their devices and carriers should be just that...carriers. nothing more.

The main reason I dumped the Nexus was for the lack of CDMA support. You are exactly right about the 4.0.4 update, but it still didn't fix the radio (reception) issues. I ran the 4.0.4 leak until the day I ditched it, but the reception was very poor and that is a common complaint with the Nexus. My RAZR has near perfect reception. Hopefully ICS doesn't hurt it.
I bought my wife a nexus and its a solid device but some things are just not right. Not even compared to the 206 leak lol. I will say that the radios w the leak are pretty good. I seem to get faster 3g and better 4g but have a few random issues. Nothing major but it could be attributed to the new radios. I will say that battery life is a noticeable improvement on my maxx w ics vs gbread. Hard to believe it could get better but even leaving it unrooted and just disabling 30+ apps thru ics is great!

Well, perhaps it's just semantics, but technically, by saying "Droid RAZR," that means the Verizon version and only the Verizon version. Verizon licensed the Droid name, and they're the only carrier in the world that legally has the rights to add it to the name of their phones. Everywhere else in the world, for every other carrier, this phone is called the Motorola RAZR. So by saying "Droid RAZR," the OP is actually referring only to the Verizon version, which makes the thread even more amusing since that's not the device that he/she is actually wanting to talk about. It wasn't too general, it was specific in the wrong way.
That said, I agree that a simple look through the threads on the first page of the forum would have provided the answer the OP was looking for. But, there's no way to make everyone fall in line with forum etiquette.
Well I guess we should talk to XDA and have them make a separate section for a "Motorola RAZR" so we don't confuse those with a Motorola RAZR or a "Motorola Droid RAZR" Lets make sure we are all technical about it jk
More sales?!?
The most surprising thing about Moto/Verizon and the delays in releasing ICS to all of their phones (including my Maxx!!) is that they are hampering additional sales of new devices to new users...yes, SALES...it makes the world go 'round. I'm a CEO of a group of manufacturing companies and, very simply, you do whatever it takes to continue making SALES. The Maxx is already so good, why wouldn't you hustle ICS out to these phones...you would see NEW customers lining up around Verizon stores to purchase these devices, and all exclaiming "iPhone who?" (incidentally, I gave up my 4S about a month ago to come back to the customization capabilities of Android to make my phone a better productivity tool than my iPhone 4S was...couldn't be happier, btw).
So wake up Moto/Verizon...generate more device SALES and satisfy your shareholders, if for no other reason....and crank out some ICS for everyone!!!
