[HOW TO] Guide to update/root from Bell/Virgin Mobile KG2 (2.3.3) to XWKK5 (2.3.6) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I made this thread because I wanted to make a guide of my own to update your Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100. I'm with Virgin Mobile, so I can confirm this work fine. You wont lose any of yours data, apps.
I experienced a better battery lifetime, better signal reception, gps, etc.
I put together many different guide to make things easier for new users.
All guides here are from XDA developers. I don't take any credits for them.
First you need Samsung Kies if you don't already have it. This is only to get the driver for your phone. Plug in your phone with usb cable and wait for the peripheral to get recognize.
After this close Kies and kill any process named Kies in your task manager.
download here
http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/m...softwaremanual.do?page=MOBILE.SOFTWARE.MANUAL
or french version
http://www.samsung.com/fr/kies/
Take your phone; hit parameter, applications, developement and check usb debog and fictitious position ( sorry my phone is in french not sure how its called in english, just check both option). You have to uncheck them if you want to transfer files on your phone like you do normally.
Now you need :
Get Odin v1.85 from here: http://www.multiupload.com/1RTGSE061G

The stock kernels are to be used to restore the kernel version after rooting and are not needed for updating the firmware.
You do not need to root or unroot the device to update the firmware.
Please ensure that KIES is closed and not running in the system tray! Kies doesn't like Odin, it's like the big brother who's always jealous that his little brother is getting to flash all the phones so he starts to flash block.
Flashing Firmware with Odin
1. Just download the firmware version you want from the second or third posts and extract the .tar or .tar.md5 file in the archive and save it somewhere
2. Reboot your phone to download mode.
To get download mode shut down the device. After it shuts off completely simultaneously press the Down volume key+ Home button + press the power button .
You should see a warning asking you to press volume up if you want to continue or volume down to cancel, press volume up. You are now in download mode!
3. Start Odin
4. Click on the PDA button and browse to the .tar or .tar.md5 file that you extracted in step 1
If the package has more than one .tar archive then they will be labelled with PDA, Phone/Modem and CSC. Just put them in the corresponding section of Odin
5. DO NOT PUT .PIT FILE AND DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TICK REPARTITION.
Anyone ask about .pit file is a moron
Should look like this screenshot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Regardless of firmware version it's still the same methodology
6. Connect the USB cable and wait for the ID:COM section to turn yellow
7. Click start to flash
8. Do not disconnect the cable or turn off the device, it will reboot when it finishes.
It will not wipe your phone if you flash as recommended
You will lose root so just re-root with the guide below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Instructions - ODIN (long)
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
Yellow Triangle Removal
Just flash the original kernel I linked.
Tutorial can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1193091
Alternatively you can use a Jig as it also resets the custom Rom counter
Tips
Download Titanim Backup from the market once your phone is rooted. It backup everything and put back all yours apps, icones the way they were.
Get Juice defender and autokiller memory for you battery. It really work well. There's a cool feature where you can downclock your cpu at idle if its rooted.
You can get the original firmware from here (2.3.3)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
If you need to put back your phone the way it was when you bought from the store.
Thats's all enjoy GingerBread 2.3.6.
Feel free to post if there's any mistake or something missing.

How come you chose XWKK5? Would I be ok to use the XWLA4 firmware from Germany?

samsung galaxy s2 ICS upgrade
Hi
I am new to this game so bear with me. Originally I rooted my phone using odin and put on a rom called lite'ning v6.1 and it is using version gingerbread 2.3.4.
Now that ICS is out, I wish to upgrade to it.
Do I need to do things in this order:
1. remove the rom
2. unroot the phone
3. upgrade to ICS
4. reroot the phone with the old rom or maybe a new one.
tried with odin and it wouldn't work then read your article about kernels and the version i need, ie virgin australia has been removed from the link you put up.
please repost it or let me know where i can get it for free
thanks
damon

does the rom support for my GT-i9100 in malaysia?

Newbie root with vodafone device

it wont let me post this in the dev forum and i did a seperate thread to the tips one to get my specific question looked at.
firstly, i believe due to it being a vodafone device, i dont get the update offered in kies which i believe is up to ke7, mine is ke1 and i cant see vodafone getting their fingers out very quickly to authorise the update. if i root it, should this then offer the update or is it only likely if i also completely unbranded it?
i dont want to flash any custom roms or anything so if the update still doesnt get offered after rooting, what other benefits would i see from rooting? what programs, inc vodafones own, could i remove?
if i do root it, i should download the unsecure .tar xwkdd even though i am currently on ke1? will i need to re-root again if/when there was any further updates such as ke8/9 etc etc?
also download odin and superoneclick and follow the guide.
to get rid of the yellow exclamation i the follow the same initiall process but use ke1 as i would have been on this if i still hadn't managed to update with kies or ke7 if i had managed to update? if i had to root first to GET that ke7 update would i root, update firmware through kies THEN reflash with ke7? OR root, reflash with ke1 THEN update? as you can see from this last paragraph, having vodafone branded phone makes it more confusing for such a newbie as i dont know what to do with that update.
please be gentle guys as i want to get the best from this phone but dont want to brick my phone and being a newbie i am very worried about getting it wrong
If you have to ask you shouldnt be doing it, but if you insist then follow the guide step by step and you cant go wrong. And if you do go wrong, insert your jig and flash away.
Also a post like this shouldnt go in the dev forum as it would get locked/deleted so you got the post in the right section.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
thx mate.
surely everyone here had to start somewhere and that would have meant learning how to do it, possibly by asking questions.
as of following the guide, sorry but my question points out that i simply wanted a little extra reassurance about what rooting can help with but also what way round i would approach the update of the firmware and the rooting. i have already looked at the guide and it doesn't really have the finer points of the update built into the guide so thats why i posted.
One updates are released by Vodafone the latest is KE1 you wait for them to update .
Rooting is nothing to do with update and will void warranty .
You need to follow the instructions if you want to root
Long Guide for beginners .
Root phone then install Ke1 Kernel from post 2 ..
If you want total debrand use the debrand guide but you lose Voda update path .

Long guide (for beginners)
- Download the attached ODIN file and extract the .zip file
- Download the attached XWKDD, but do NOT extract the .tar file
- Download and extract SuperOneClick (Some say you should not be using the very latest version 1.9, but 1.5 or so)
- If you do not have Samsung's KIES 2.0 installed, download and install it. You need it to install the correct USB drivers, so the programs can communicate with the device. Reboot your computer after installation of KIES.
- Make sure your device is in USB debugging mode: Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging
- Reboot your device into download mode: Turn the device off, then power it on again by pressing and holding VolumeDown + Home + Power simultaneously. You will know when you are in download mode, it is really obvious
- Start ODIN
- Connect the device to your computer using USB
- Wait a few seconds, the ODIN screen should show you that a device is now connected
- Make sure that in ODIN NOTHING is checked, except the "Auto reboot" and "F. Reset Time" checkboxes. Press the "PDA" button, and select the "XWKDD_insecure.tar" file.
- Press "Start". ODIN you should now be flashing the kernel, and the device should reboot.
- Wait until the device is rebooted, and while still being connected over USB, start SuperOneClick, and press ROOT.
- Reboot the device
- Done !

the VAU is for the vodafone version.
I do not mind loosing my data on the phone i just want it all to be back like; brand new from the box, I have a previous back up of the data from just before rooting it. can i use Kies to restore it or does it just load the non-os data eg contacts. 8. for warranty you must reset the binary counter using a Micro USB jig (search please, only $2 on ebay from china)
9. thank intratech for saving you =], done.
How can you lose GPS by Rooting your phone with CF-ROOT? CF-Root is just the stock Kernal with Superuser,CWM and busybox added to it. Maybe try installing a Custom Rom like CheckRom,Criskelo etc and see if that fixes your GPS. Also change your Kernal to Siyah or Speedmod advantages are better overall efficiency and longer battery life.
Modify your GPS.conf file which is located in /system/etc with ES explorer to the following settings:
NTP_SERVER=au.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=0.au.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=1.au.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=2.au.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=3.au.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=0.oceania.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=1.oceania.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=2.oceania.pool.ntp.org
NTP_SERVER=3.oceania.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
SUPL_PORT=7276
i used terminal emulator
cd /system/etc
cat gps.config
it read
NTP_SERVER=north-america.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=HTTP: //XTRA1.GPSONEXTRA.NET/XTRA.BIN
XTRA_SERVER_2=HTTP: //XTRA2.GPSONEXTRA.NET/XTRA.BIN
XTRA_SERVER_3=HTTP: //XTRA3.GPSONEXTRA.NET/XTRA.BIN
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
SUPL_PORT=7276
Change north-america.pool.ntp.org to au.pool.ntp.org This should speed up the lock times.
i just got es explorer, tryed to chant gps.conf and it won't let me probably permissions? how do i get around this
go to ES explorer settings by pressing menu button than settings. And tick Root Explorer and Mount File System.
ARG no luck X[ i restarted, using navigator i select the destination, then go start, it says gps unavailable choose "demo" or try again later.
Go to settings, Location and Security, and make sure Use GPS satellites,Sensor Aiding, Use Wireless networks are ticked.
is there a method of test gps ?
do you know how to create/get the stock kernal by myself? ill upload it here if i can do it
Go to the Android market and download this software "GPS Status & Toolbox" once installed click the menu button, tools, Manage A-GPS state than pick download. It will than start scanning for GPS Satellites once you see it fix on some try using Navigator again.
it is getting
0/5
fix/sats
;/
Thats good news at least its able to find them, Just let it run because it takes awhile around 10-20mins and see if it fixes onto the Sats.
i found out that there are magnetic field sensors ;D atm im putting it near speakers and magnets :B
if i have to wait, it seems like is stops searching when the screen locks what do i do
In the Settings area(menu button,settings) click on Display Tools, Keep screen On.
If you can flash using CWM then try this - http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/3425/supportedcountriespfgps.png
Thank you PFittech for the Australian GPS fix...
do you you know where to get the stock kernal as in where they are published? cause for the c-f roots to make them they must of gotten them from their to mod them
Is your phone the I9100T model because if it is you need to install the Vodafone modem DUKF4 which you can find here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15885779&postcount=328 just extract the file till you have modem.bin and flash it in Odin by picking Phone.
yeah it is a I900*T*DUKH1 ;o did i root the wrong cf root?
No you are just screwed like me and all the other I9100T owners. We can only use the Vodaphone and Telstra modems to get any decent reception and data connections. So anytime you install any new firmwares or Custom mods you just have to flash the Vodafone modem straight afterwards.

That too!
this is en example that help u flash with odin. (Proceed at your own risk)
Step by Step Instructions:
Download the Android Firmware
Extract the downloaded file ‘I9100XXKL1_I9100OXAKL1.rar’ to get these 3 files:
CODE_I9100XXKL1_CL783870_REV02_eng_mid_ship.tar.md5
GT-I9100-CSC-MULTI-OXAKL1.tar.md5
MODEM_I9100XXKL1_REV_02_CL1085162.tar.md5
Download Odin software
Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC. Switch Off your phone. Wait for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
Now, put the Galaxy S2 in Download Mode — press and hold these keys together: Volume_DOWN+Home+Power.
this is required to install the XXKG1 using Odin PC Software.
Open Odin (from step 3) — Odin3 v1.85.exe.
Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added! !”
under the Odin’s message box in the bottom left. If you don’t get this message,
than probably there is a problem with drivers. Make sure you’ve drivers installed.
Important! On Odin, Do NOT tick the ‘Re-Partition’ checkbox, but keep the ‘Auto Reboot’ & ‘F.
Reset Time’ checkboxes ticked. Do not touch any other checkbox or tab or anything, except as required in step 9 below.
Select these files in Odin at respective tabs (check out the screenshot given at the top for help):
Click the PDA Tab, and select CODE_I9100XXKL1_CL783870_REV02_eng_mid_ship.tar.md5 (from step 2.1)
Click the Phone Tab, and select MODEM_I9100XXKL1_REV_02_CL1085162.tar.md5 (from step 2.3)
Click the CSC Tab, and select GT-I9100-CSC-MULTI-OXAKL1.tar.md5 (from step 2.2)
Now, hit the START button to let the process begin.
When process at Odin finishes your phone will automatically reboot —
and you can unplug the cable then.
Plus, you’ll get a PASS (with green background) message in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin.
If it’s red and with FAIL written over it, the process flashing process wasn’t successful.

Confusion over kernel

hi All,
noob see original post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/root-rom-advice-t3234978
Working on rooting a "spare " S2.. so I can back it up. No data to loose on this phone, just practice before I attack the real deal.
Just stock for now to prove I can backup and restore unchanged.
following the instructions on these links I hit a simple problem.

so far:
Kies installed.
connects with phone ok (Kies indicates firmware upgrade available-ignored for now)
Odin v3.10.7 installed
Info from About phone>
Model GT-I9100T

Seems to indicate its an LP9?
going by the kernels listed here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/orig-development/30-10-2012-k-la-lp-t1103399
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_KPN_LP9-v5.4-CWM5.zip
CF-Root-SGS2_DX_SIN_LP9-v5.4-CWM5.zip
there are two that match?
Not sure what the diff is?
Or am I totally lost already
ok having stalled on that front (above post) I tried to root (the spare phone) without kernel using this guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/general/guide-root-unroot-stock-ics-firmware-t1501719
Was very confused by the text
"Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- MOD EDIT: Links removed as its the unsafe version...
or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip"
took me a while to realise the {File} in question was CWM.ZIP which I didnt find or I did after searching but couldnt determine which version Im after. Throw ontop of that info about rom manager and CWM manager...
Back to the beginning.....
1) backup the phone, firmware everything etc ye old PC ghost an image
From what Ive read to do that I need root?
Maybe Im hitting old how to posts...
couldnt understand/find cwm.zip so I went back to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/orig-development/30-10-2012-k-la-lp-t1103399
Code:
Instructions - ODIN (long)
- Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
- Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
- (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Start ODIN
- Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
- Put your phone in download mode
- (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
- Make sure repartition is NOT checked
- Click the START button
- Wait for the phone to reboot
- Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
first hiccup .. there is no PDA button in Odin...did some digging, now called AP..phew
righto did that and everything seemed to work.
Found CWM in applications and ran a system backup (internal SD as my only ext SD is the one in my real phone, full of music n photos and Im just not confident so far to mess with that)
fired up kies with phone connected went to Internal mem file browser and copied, Computer\GT-I9100T\Phone\clockworkmod\backup\2015-10-29.12.04.11orig
to my pc HD..ok that bit works.
so I have a backup but was hoping I could do this without the messing with the Odin and kernel stuff as Im not convinced I understand what I have done.
I dont feel confident applying this process to the real phone.
So the real question is what is this CWM.zip where is it/which one should i be using?

How to Install Firmware on S9+ to Reload from Scratch

I have been a lifelong Iphone user so go easy on me. I am trying to learn. I bought a used Samsung S9+ from a guy on a cruise and didn't know it had Google account protection. I can't reach the guy since he lives somewhere in South Korea. I know you can use the Odin tool to reload it from scratch but I can't figure out which files to get (IE. Firmware, etc) to reinstall it. It's a Samsung model SM-G965U but I don't know which firmware file and combination file to download. I know how to use the Odin tool to some degree and work in IT so I can learn this very quickly.
Can someone tell me how to figure out what files I need to reload the phone? I would prefer to put stock android on the phone and get rid of the Sprint specific OS.
Thanks in advance.
Hi! In order to install the stock firmware for your Samsung device you need to install the drivers first.
Here is a download link for the drivers https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy/others/android-usb-driver-for-windows
Then, the stock firmware which can be found on sammobile. Since the site has disabled the free download for ome reasons, you have to use samfirm. It is basically a software which downloads the latest firmware for your device. Just put the correct model of your device which I guess it's SM-G965U and your region. Make sure the "auto" button is pressed.
*after chosing the right model and region, you'll have to press the download button on the right side of the program. You will be asked where the firmware should be downloaded, I recommend to download it on desktop so you will find it quickly.
Here is a download link for samfirm https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3803841&d=1467715462
Downloading the firmware it's pretty easy, so I don't think you gonna face any problems.
While you are downloading the stock firmware you should download the correct version of Odin which can be found on sammobile. You can download it from anywhere as long as the version is: Odin v3.13.3.
Here is a download link for Odin v3.13.3: https://dl2018.sammobile.com/Odin3-v3.13.3.zip
After both firmware and Odin are successfully downloaded you can proceed to install the firmware. The firmware itself it's an archive which can be opened with winrar or 7zip, you have to put those file into a folder, again, preferably on desktop and then load them into Odin.
In odin you got 5 buttons:
BL (Bootloader)
CP (Modem / Radio)
CSC_*** (Country / Region / Operator)
HOME_CSC_*** (Country / Region / Operator)
USERDATA which you have to leave it blank.
Click on each button and search for the correct file in the firmware folder. look at the very beginning of each file and you'll see BL,CP,CSC.. etc
*I recommend you to use CSC at the CSC section not the home_csc which keeps your data on the device.*
After you are done, turn off your device, push Volume Down + Bixby + Power keys for a couple of seconds and when the screen turns on leave all the buttons. when the text pops in, press Volume Up and you are in download mode. Connect your device to pc using the OEM cable, and you should see the device in odin. Press the start button and if you have completed all these steps like I said you should have your device ready after ~10 minutes.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
