Possibly, no ETA. No one knows at this point when but it is technically possible but it will take a lot of work from the devs to get around the bootloader.

I was hoping that the devs would find a solution but this seems to be the way to go.
Pretty much all the great devs have or are planning to get Kindle Fires.
The forum over there is "on fire" (pardon the pun)
As someone that loved the Nook Color that is very disappointing.
Yeah, I was on the fence between the two, but the locked bootloader, and kinda goofy looking form factor of the nook tab made the decision for me, and yeah, the kindle forums are busy. I am very happy with my choice.

Cm7 for the kindle has no sound at the moment, so yes, you can get a kindle and enjoy a buggy customization experience. You can already do a lot with rooting and side loading apps; you'll do this with a better screen and hardware specs on the NT.
That being said, the bootloader is a major clockblock for development of custom ROMs. While we can still root and sneak in apps here and there, we are as-of-yet powerless to remove Barns&Nobles pared down version of the android experience. This is a real tough nut to crack, as we're forced to either bypass or crack it, both of which are not fun to do. Remember, hackers are a minute portion of buyers, and B&N is subsidizing the cost of the tablet with their ecosystem.
The KF, on the other hand does not have the locked bootloader, which means its more likely that meaningful development will continue for it.

I really don't get why anyone would get a kindle fire JUST because you can modify it more (right now). What's the point if it has no SD slot and choppy video playback?

Sounds like there is some hope. I have been long time user of the "other" tablet and ordered a Noon Tablet, should have it Monday. I hear there is a way to do "sidelaoder" to gain access to the whole android market without having to root it. Anyone have a guide I can reference to do it to mine? I see many instructions but want to be sure I pick a "safe" one.
Other than the market, I don't think there is much more I'd like it to do. Does android have a app for Synology NAS? I also like using XBMC on iPad, anyone know if adroid has it or something similar/better?
Anything thing else you recommend I do to the NT without having to root it? My mail functions for the tablet will be entertainment, internet, videos, pictures and music.

To get market you have to root. I don't see why you wouldn't as there is the one click unroot app and the 8(or is it 10?) failed boot to factory restore if you have any issues and want to return to BN

Does it seem like they will eventually figure out how to get custom roms and kernels, or is it still up in the air as to if its even possible. And I've read of the possibility of b&n doing an OTA update that would close the door on the current rooting method and side loading of apps, is there any reason to believe they would? Or is that just paranoid speculation.

OTA updates to the BC broke rooting so I assume a OTA to the NT would do the same. Usually rooting was restored in a few days. Custom kernels are a different issue and currently is unknown.
Kindle has CM7 booting on it. may have to go for the kindle over the nook tablet. Custom roms and kernels are a big selling factor and the kindle seems much closer to that.

True... Sadly, I doubt the higher ups of B&N really care about that small 1% for whom this is a concern. I'm still on the fence myself, but for me it's a NT or just save my money and wait; The lack of uSD kills the KF for me and I don't need/want a tablet enough to justify anything with a higher pricetag.

I think its a little early to say its being written off. The awesome developers on this forum are still working on it, and probably others too. Even if the fully rooted device is as far as it goes, it is still a great device for the money.

Not likely. Stopped by B&N on the way from class today and saw 3-4 people walk out with the NT during the time(30 min?) I was hanging around talking to the "tech". They're still selling quite well, but time will tell if they can keep it up.
B&N couldn't care less about losing sales to those who aren't buying their low cost eReader to use as intended. There is little to no margin for selling it as a general purpose tablet so they really don't care that those who can't load a custom ROM aren't happy with their device. Lot's of more expensive tablets out there for those who want to do custom development and a Nook app for those who want to buy their online products.

I wonder if the Kindle Fire is actually helping NT sales. The KF sell people on the idea of getting a 7" tablet, but they shop around and finds that the NT has better specs for a little more. They read reviews like Engadget that say the NT plays videos smoother. The NT is suddenly on their radar.
The average person wouldn't care a bit about the bootloader, though they might be disappointed to find out about the 1GB limit for own content.

If I understand correctly if the Nook is rooted apps install in the 15gb partition so rooted nooks have access to more than 1gb. Of course your average user isn't going to root their device.

Sideloaded apps also. You wanna move files to the B&N partition, you use root file manager to move.
I wouldnt mind buying apps if b&n actually had any in thier market. They dont have crap.

Atleast for me the NT led to a kindle sale. Custom roms and kernels are a big deal to me, and I'm guessing the kindle is a week or two away from CM7 and most likely CM9 as well. And maybe the devs figure out a way around NTs locked boot loader, but there also seems to be a good chance they don't. It was a simple decision.

I keep reading on various forums that the locked bootloader is a Nook Tab killer. Why?????? Please educate an old man as to why this is such a big deal. Within 3 days and less than an hour of tapping, I was able to sideload Amazon App store the Whole Kindle store, Google and a whole host of other sites that have content and applications for free or for sale. Already there are people who have rooted the tablet. Please tell an ignorant old man WHY it is so important to unlock the bootloader. What would you do/have once you unlocked the bootloader that you can't do without? Is it just because the locked bootloader feels like a slap in the face to developers? I mean what more would you do to it that you can't already do with it locked down?
My Tab does everything and more than I'd ever do with a real tablet so I'm just very curious as to what all the fuss is about.
Custom ROMS and kernels allow you to really extend the life of your device (meaning the device won't seem outdated so quickly). The CPU can be overclocked, the voltage tweaked for better battery life, newer versions of the android OS can be uploaded, etc.

Question: What happens when B&N releases an automatic update (replacing your system and your downloaded apps) and it closes the hole that you used to install additional apps?
Answer: We don't know. Having a way around the bootloader (eg, booting SDcards) gives some assurance that we will be able to root future versions, allowing continued "unauthorized" apps.

Here's why:
- A regular build of Android is better than the dumbed down version used in the nook tablet line.
- Ice Cream Sandwich is 10x better than Gingerbread.
- A tablet version of Android is better than smartphone version used in the nook.
Thanks everyone for the quick education. I understand much better now. It does appear that with a locked bootloader the customer is at the mercy of the vendor. They control the software, they control the hardware you just bought and paid for. I get it now. Sounds like I just rented a Barnes & Noble portal to their content. They can close the back door to any other apps anytime they choose. Almost doesn't seem fair.

Ok, fair enough. I got mine for 125 on craigslist and threw cm7 on it via sd card. Unfortunately I can't really get a stable custom rom on the internal because it's an 8gb model. I really don't like the nook tablets vanilla firmware, it's really ugly and not intuitive.

I own the glacier. Use to own a magic a espresso. Might have a dinc2 as a development device (a really big might), trying to get money so I can upgrade to a one s, kinda hard jobless.
My best friend just upgraded to the GS3 from his original Galaxy S. I tried to get him to get the unlocked Galaxy Nexus, but that's another story. He won't let me root his GS3 at all. He likes it, and says that all that is unnecessary BS, and if it doesn't come stock it's not needed. I personally have a rooted Nexus s 4g, and he still resist the urge to root. How can you convince people to take the leap of faith and get their phone rooted?

Why do you want to force him to root?
It's his phone, he's happy and that is his choice.
I rooted the sh*t out of my SGS 1 because the stock firmware had a lot of issues, and only after 2 years of community development I'd say that the various homebrew ROMs and kernels reached a level of maturity, performance and stability which allowed an overall smooth experience.
With the SGS 3 at the moment i'm super happy with stock firmware, for now i'll keep on monitoring the community developments and i'll root it when i'll feel it's the right time.

If he wants to carry out certain operations that require root then yes but its the height on noobness to root for no reason .Root voids warranty .

I totally agree, too much **** could go horribly wrong if someone who is clueless about Android has root.
If he wants to learn himself all well and good but in this situation he is better off without it.

If it really is your best friend, then be a good friend and see the situation from his perspective, not just your own. As he sees it, rooting is an unnecessary complication that may bring risk, and from his point of view, he is right.
I rooted my new tablet only after I realized I needed to because there were things I wanted to do that required rooting. Along with that, I set myself up to restore the tablet to its original condition if anything went wrong. I am an experienced Unix/Linux system administrator, and the decision to root the device was not one I made quickly, without learning as much as I could about rooting, and thinking it through. I would never try to talk anyone else into doing it, and it would bother me if a good friend rooted their device just to copy me, or because it was "a cool thing to do."
Instead of trying to manipulate your friend into doing something to make you happy, make sure you are doing it to benefit him, and not cause problems in his life. If you consider all of the possible consequences, that may be harder than you think. ;-)
Having said all that, if you still want to continue with your idea, here is a plan: Make a list of all the additional things you can do with a rooted device, and think about the added value. It's not hard to get a list of apps that require a rooted device, and there are even websites with articles like, "Top 15 Apps That Require Rooting." Then show your friend how the apps are run, and show how easy it is, and that it is 99% safe. Also, if he ends up in the 1%, make sure he can recover his device and explain that to him.
If he still doesn't want to do it, leave him alone. Repeat the following until you can say it easily: "OK, I respect your decision."
And if you can say that and mean it, you will have maximized the chance that sometime in the future, he will decide to root, after making the decision on his own, not because someone pushed him into it.

2. Make sure he has a desire to control and make his device the way the wants it to be.
If #2 is not valid. You can leave him alone, and from time to time, show him how awesome root can be. He will have to convince himself to do it. Don't put it upon yourself to force him to it. Root & modification generated experiences varies from people to people.
Connect a Ps3 controller and play something like Nova 3 on Tv to show the possibilities of Rooting.
I agree with others if he doesn't want to root don't force him, I only rooted my old gt540 because the phone was stuck on 2.1 and I wanted GB currently I have no reason to root my GS3 but I will when I need to.

That's IF you can get your hands in the right Hdmi cable..I've spent over 100 dollars ordering 2 different Hdmi mhl adapters now trying to find the right one. Crossing my fingers that the current one I have ordered will work.

Honestly if I was forced to I could do without almost everything that needs Root, but if I saw a phone that couldn't use Titanium Backup I just don't think I'd buy it because picking that App is a no Brainer, and I've known a load of people who have lost a f**k load of data because they had no backups so I offer to temporarily Root then Unroot to make them the occasional backup.

Thanks y'all. Kinda realized that leaving someone with a rooted phone is worse than not rooting at all. It's like buying a teen Sports car setting it up, and leaving him unattended. Plus he likes touchwiz soI guess I'll leave him be.

Now I found out in 4.4, Google has prevented write access to external storage?! And there's no way around it without root? SIGH. Not not only can I not root my phone, but I can't even write to my SD card without plugging it into my PC? What's next, take away our widgets and ability to change launcher/interface? What happened to the old philosophy of Android? It's OUR devices and we should be able to do what we damn well please with them.

That's not good enough. Sure for devices like the Note 2 it would allow a locked phone to become unlocked at any time. But what about devices that never got unlocked like the Note 3 and other future devices? This doesn't resolve their situations.
Also, yes I agree with you OP. I refuse to "upgrade" from this phone to anything else any time soon considering the way these phones are turning into locked up garbage. I'm so grateful for all the work modders and hackers managed to do with this device which allows me to run something as amazing as Cyanogenmod 11 right now. I saw what the stock 4.3+ ROM's look like, yuck. Imagining being stuck with that "forever" is like a nightmare only I'm awake.
Anyways there really is no better alternative to Android at the moment or foreseeable future. If you want a smartphone with even a hint of customizability then Android's your only option.
You are not seeing the big picture. If you want phones that you can hack away at and are not secure there are plenty out there. Verizon and AT&T teaming up with Samsung have gone after large military and commercial contracts with these phones. Therefore they have made efforts to make them as secure as possible. You can thank all the hackers in the world pulling email and banking information off your phones for that. And you probably can throw in thanks for the locked bootloader to all those that returned their bricked phones under warranty.
As I said, you have choices, Nexus, HTC, developer's editions....etc. You just need to do a little research before buying.
Agreed for many of the UI changes. But I understand. They have to appeal to Ma and Pa Kettle.
Hopefully at some point they will embrace custom ROMs with a special model like Linkysy did with their L model. But I'm guessing not.

Well said! This is why I'm leaving smasung and will be researching a diff phone for my next purchase/upgrade. LG G3 or HTC...not sure yet...

I went to the HTC M8 and I hated HTC..it is a freaking fast phone!!! Unlocking and rooting was super easy! Won't have to worry about Knox until they upgrade it to L.

Loved the look of that phone and I am not a HTC fan, but that phone looked good.. Contract is not up until next year and I think a move to a different carrier and phone manufacturer is in my future.. Just not sure what yet

I always liked the sense interface compared to TW, I've got till Jan, then I'm making a change. keep us posted on your choice L18, would love to run your ROMs!

Assuming I lived and traveled exclusively in areas where one of those carriers had a decent signal, that could be a good approach. Unfortunately that's not the case.
i think me, like many others, are checking these forums frequently to see if any updates or news to the roms for HDX, especially since the last waves of rooting happening all the way to newest OTA update, however the heat has seemingly died off with the hopes of updates, and that glimmer of hope with bootloader unlock that we all waiting for. I understand as long as this doesn't happen we are still limited to the Amazon kernel.
im not a developer but a savvy user like many others so im in no position to measure the difficulty of creating updates for the device, however with the floodgate opened before i was really hoping for lots of new roms and updates to existing, coupled with powerful hardware at cheap prices, and what seems to be wide audience, but didnt seem to be the case.
does anyone think there's any hope left for this device? should we just jump on to Tegra K1 bandwagon soon?
Last I saw the had unlocked the boot loader but was working more kinks and gonna charge for it. That was like 3xweeks or more ago. Who knows.

Yeah, not only does it delay Amazon's ability to patch the hole, but it also helps the developers of the exploit earn the money they deserve. I'm just currently concerned after that argument in the fire phone thread they may not be releasing the exploit due to legal reasons, which is bothersome.
I don't know but it really sucks and I also know this thread is not development related. As far as being in the development section I mean.

im sorry but thats a sorry excuse. theyre gonna charge $25 so that a multi billion dollar company cant find out? if it slows them down itll slow them down for a couple of hours and thats it.

I check every couple of weeks or so, but honestly just running the xpose framework module makes me happy. The only thing I was missing was the play store, and it allows me to have that. The Fire user interface has actually grown on me.

The argument in that thread about whether bootloader unlocking is legal in the US or not is not even touching on the real issue. First, bootloader unlocking IS legal. Second, what is not legal though is hacking a device put out by a company and then charging other people and making money off of your exploit. And even if it were legal, it is against XDA TOS for members to charge for things like ROMs, kernel, bootloader unlock, etc. We can donate sure, but specifically charging people for access is a no-no.
Even still, Id pay for it. I really want to see some real development going on for this tablet. The Thor and Appolo gapps ROMs are great, but it would be nice to have a true AOSP build working.

My HDX is still in the mail and I check here everyday. I hope the unlock sees the light of day before the HDX becomes obsolete eventually.
i dont have high hopes at this rate, this device target audience is opposite of most android users in the sense they're not the type to tinker with the software
its not like a Nexus device where most of the users going for it are expected with rooting and roms, i cant blame them, even the rooting process and safestraping rom slots is not common for android devices

This this device has turned me into a troll something horrible(@least three times a day). But at least I try to stay helpful when I'm here .sometimes the attitude pops out from the,dangled just before me rage. .. Got to love to hate this sh*t .. Been circling this carcass of a device for a months like a freaking vulture..waiting.. waiting waiting ....out of ten tablets nhouse i maintain 4 are hdx ...and currently no bricks lol

I agree totally ,, and it also seems like this device is a favorite for parents to buy kids as convenient media babysitters and then the children think they need to come here and start modifying Bricking and crying ... It has been a bitter roller coaster ride I just want my unlock and fastboot stuff so I can unlock, archive the rest,and be on the next device. Uhg and I am sorry but this forum has given me fantasies such as hoping the next update will come with a choke Bart emoji on my keyboard;-p lmao only because of the face palming is starting to leave a mark ; (

Your idea of working in my idea of working or two different things nobody has been able repair a brick device via our fastboot , I mean flash any files system files kernels or what ever as far as I know nothing has worked for this is to what I am referring .

Hi hashcode. Any info you can feed us would be appreciAted. I understand things are hush hush for numerous reasons but people here are starting to lose interest in our device and the longer we wait for a unlock the more talent we lose and, undoubtedly, potential donaters.
Your teasing and previous posts show u have some inside knowledge of the unlock. Any info would be great but specificAlly what is the snag the devs have run into? And I know it's rude to ask but how much longer are we lookin at for release?
